Solution to photo imports into IDVD

Much discussion months ago about the poor quality of photos imported into iMovie then exported to DVD. Software "Photo to Movie" by LQ Graphics that does a beautiful job of setting up your photos then render them to full quality QT. From there, import them to iDVD

The secret is space. iTunes seems to almost need the space of the photos BEFORE compression. Not only have I sometimes been unable to sync photos, but sometimes I can't sync all my photos.
Do this: hook up your iPhone, and go into Movies, if you have some, and delete 2 or 3 large movies. Don't worry, we'll put them back.
If you don't have movies, go into Apps, sort by Size, and delete several large apps until you have 2-3 GIGS of space. 2 Gigs will work for under 1000 photos, delete 3 Gigs if you have more.
Sync.
Now turn on the photos you want, sync again. (these may already have returned on the last sync)
Now go turn on your movies and apps, sync once more.
iTunes syncs the photos LAST, so I have had some albums disappear when my iphone was full, and I added a large movie or app.
It's all about space.

I have a large number of photos imported into iPhoto with the dates wrong.  How can I adjust multiple photos (with varying dates) to the same, correct, date?

If I understand you correctly, when you enter a date in the Adjust Date and Time window, the picture does not update with the date you enter.  If that is the case then something is wrong with iPhoto or your perhaps your library.
How large a date change are you putting in?  iPhoto currently has an issue with date changes beyond about 60 years at a time.  If the difference between the current date on the image and the date you are entering is beyond that range that may explain why this is not working.
If that is not the case:
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.iphoto
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: to get to the "home > library" hold down option on the keyboard and click on "Go" > "Library" while in the Finder.
    Let me know the results.

  • Imovie media browser only has one option, "Mobile". other videos had option for medium and small. mobile option wont import into iDVD. other videos gave me the Medium option, why not this one?

help! imovie media browser only has one option, "Mobile". other videos had option for medium and small. mobile option wont import into iDVD. other videos gave me the Medium option, why not this one? need answers ASAP!

    That is your answer then.
    Large is 960x540
    Medium is 640x480 (or 720x480)
    Mobile is probably 480x272.
It is offering you the sizes that make sense given the size of your source material.
As a trick, you might try this. In your project, put a short 640x480 clip in the project as the first clip of the project. Then keep the rest of the project as is. See if it will let you share now in Medium. It will not look as good, because there are not enough pixels to cover the Medium size, but it might work.

  • Editing and saving individual clips for import into iDVD

I've begun a large project digitizing many old family 8mm projector films. Each reel, varying in size from 3 to 20 min, was imported into iMovie HD 6 as individual clips. These clips are, in a sense, self contained movies. I want to use iMovie to mute the sounds, add a soundtrack, and make some visual adjustments. My goal is to create an iDVD project with several submenus based on location, in each menu will be a list of the reels (iMovie clips), that took place in each location.
I've figured out how to do everything except saving and exporting edited clips to iDVD. Since iMovie is set up to create one movie per project (the timeline represents one movie, right?), I can import individual clips into iDVD but they aren't edited. What I want to be able to do is drag one clip into the timeline, make my adjustments, save it, put it back with the other clips to be imported in iDVD, and repeat the process. Is this possible in iMovie? Should I get something else like Final Cut Express?

I gather that what you want to do is modify the clips and save them as self contained movies for eventual import into iDVD.
Edit your clip in iMovie, add your sound track, and then File/Export/compress movie for Full Quality to your desktop as a self contained Quicktime Movie. Each of these self contained Quicktime Movies can be dragged into your iDVD project by dragging them to the edge of the main iDVD menu window.

  • Photos imported into wrong folder

When running an import and setting destination to import into subfolder organised by date (2011/2011-04-29) the ophotos taken late in the day do not go into the correct folder, they import into the next days folder. It appears the calculation used for the import does not take into acct regional settings.
Using lightroom 3.4 (also seen with 3.2 and 3.3)
Any ideas other than manually sorting all photos?
I notice that the Canon import software correctly sorts the photos, just have to use that then synchronise in lightroom, not good but at least till adobe fix the bug it will have to do.

  • IMovie 5.0.2 project won't import into iDVD 4.0.1

    Aloha--
I'm working on an iMac G5 running OS 10.4.7. I am trying to bring an iMovie (just over 13 GB) on a La Cie external firewire drive into iDVD, also to be saved to the La Cie. The La Cie is formatted as Mac OS Extended. iMovie quits after/during rendering. I have used the iMovie-iDVD process successfully in the past, albeit with smaller files residing on my HD.
I've browsed this and the iDVD forum. I have removed possible incompatible QuickTime extensions, and I've tried to open the project into an earlier version of iMovie (4.0.2). However, the earlier version of iMovie won't open at all. I've also tried to open up iDVD and import it directly, but the menu import function just doesn't work (I can see and click on the file, but it never imports), and because it's on the La Cie and not my internal HD, it's not in the "media" folder so I can't pull it in from that menu.
    Could this be due to:
    (1) The fact that one or both projects are on the La Cie (and what would the work-around be?)?
    (2) One of more version of the program aren't compatible with the OS?
    (3) Some other reason that I can't dream of right now?
Unfortunately, I need the DVD by tomorrow, so any prompt help would be both useful and appreciated!

    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The movie that's in the iDVD folder (of the Shared Movies folder) contains chapter information. If you imported that movie to iDVD, iDVD should have delivered chapters.
Make sure your iDVD preferences are set to accept chapters.
If nothing works, this failure of iMovie 5 to export to iDVD suggests some kind of underlying problem. I suspect something is corrupt in the video or audio content.
Try importing that made-for-iDVD movie I mentioned to a NEW iMovie 5 project. (Drag it to the Timeline of the project.) That should deliver "cleaner" video/audio. Add your chapters to THAT project, send it to iDVD. Everything might start working as it should.

  • 16:9 QT clips imported into iDVD '08 display as 4:3

I have created 16:9 QT clips using FCE. When I use QT to play the clips, they look fine. When I choose "Show Movie Properties" in QT the visual settings tab confirms a display size of 853 x 480. I created a new project in iDVD and selected 16:9 as the project aspect ratio. The problem is that when I import my 16:9 clips into iDVD, the clips display within iDVD as distorted 4:3 video. It appears to be stretched down to fit within the "Standard Crop Area," leaving black bars on each side, left and right, rather than present the video in 16:9. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, paul

Hi Paul - I've exactly the same situation here. I've exported my movie out from Final Cut Express using the Apple Intermediate Codec and the PAL 16:9 720x576 option creating a Quicktime file. After burning the DVD with iDVD 08 Version 7.0.1 the main menue shows up in 16:9 but my movie in 4:3 with small black stripes on the left and the right side of the picture. Any ideas?

  • Photo imported into ID is not as black as surrounging black

    Hello all.
Using CS5.  In creating a document in ID, an image that has been done in Photoshop with strong black backgrounds is imported into ID using File > Place.  In ID, there are two black panels on each side of the photo.  On screen it looks fine (blacks match) but on printing, the black in the photo is not as black (more grayish) than the two side panels.  Is there anything that could be done to enhance the black in the photo?
    Thanks.

I don't believe I've ever seen a photo with a black background that wasn't added in Photoshop that had the same flat color throughout, so the odds of getting a perfect match all the way along all edges is practically nil.
You might want to consider removing the background in Photoshop and placing the photo in a frame with the black fill, or go with the flow a bit and use a colro that decidedly does not match so it doesn't look like you tried and failed. I'll often use a white (or some other contrasting color) line around the edge to break the two apart, too.
It's also very important that you set the prefernence for Appearance of Black to Display All Blacks Accurately or you have no idea what the really look like.

  • Size of imovie project & importing into idvd

So I would like to transfer my imovie project into idvd with minimal quality degradation. Does the quality progressively get worse once the project goes beyond 4.6 G? What is the maximum size that can go into idvd?
Also, I had difficulty importing AVI clips into imovie. I received and "unknown error" msg when I tried.
Finally, can I add other data to the dvd besides the movie (i.e. spreadsheet)?
Any help on any of these questions would be awesome.

    c4daisy,
The length of your movie is the determining factor when encoding a DVD with iDVD. The file size doesn't matter.
You can fit about 2 hours of video on a DVD.
What is the source of your AVI clips? Can you open them with QuickTime?
Yes, you can add use iDVD to add file to a DVD-ROM section of DVDs you create.

  • QT Movie with Chapters manually added does not import into iDVD 7

I have read several threads regarding the use of Chapters in iMovie and iDVD version 7. Since I do not own any of the pro applications I decided to create a test QT Movie with manually added chapters as described in the QT Pro Manual. I was able to create the chapters and save the movie. However, when I dropped the movie into iDVD 7 no chapters were created. I checked the iDVD Prefs and the "create chapters" option is turned on. I have read that people have been able to drop movies with chapters using one of the pro applications, but I have also read that iDVD does not always correctly encode the chapters.
Has anyone had success adding QT Movies with manually created Chapters into iDVD7?

For what it's worth, I tried manually adding chapter markers to my movies in QT Pro using those same instructions - didn't work for me (iDVD didn't recognize the chapters).
I found another application called Metadata Hootenanny (free) that easily adds chapter markers. When I did that, iDVD recognized them and automatically added a chapters sub-menu when I imported the movie. This was all in iDVD '06.
I've tried this quickly in iDVD version 7 (imported the same chapter-embedded QT movie as above) and it did the same thing (automatically added chapters sub-menu). Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Bill

  • Completed QT movie changes format when imported into iDVD and DVD Studio

I made a few movies and I simply want them on a DVD. I convert them into QT movies and everything looks great. I filmed both movie using my Canon Vixia M30 in 60i and maximum quality. When I move the files into iDVD, it squishes the actual movie into 4:3 even though the original QT movie is 16:9 and iDVD is set up for 16:9 and the quality is horrible. I check the "Project Info" and my 3.1GB file has shrunk down to a 376MB file. I tried to put the file into DVD Studio and the same thing happened. This has happened with the last two movies I made. I'm really getting frustrated. What am I doing wrong? Help!!

A DVD uses the highly compressed MPEG2 codec. So it is impossible to have it look exactly the same.
Nothing you can do about that, the DVD video specification is strictly set out.
First of all, export from FCP. Self contained with Current Settings (same as the Timeline).
Bring that file into Compressor and apply one of the time based DVD presets that the running time of your video fits into -for example: *DVD 90 mins Best Quality 16:9*. Import the resulting MPEG2 and AC3 files into DVD Studio Pro. You must also tell DVD SP that your film is 16:9.

  • No movie files importing into iDVD.

Why is every single file format I attempt to bring into iDVD (version 7.0.3)giving me an "unknown file format" error. I tried sharing from Imovie (7.1.4) "large", "medium", quicktime DV, 16x9, 4x3...nothing is working.

    Hi
Try deleting the pref file - see down
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

  • Cropped photos -import into iMovie, but reverts to original

Anyone have this problem? Cropped photos in iPhoto and iView look fine in their own habitat, but when I import them into iMovie, they revert back to their original uncropped photo - frustrating since these are photos eliminating the letterbox, so there are black lines on two sides, so the cropping within iMovie does not work.
    Thank you for any information!

Hi S. Katie - your problem with iPhoto is most likely because when you crop them in the iPhoto window you are not affecting the ORIGINAL photo, and it must be that original photo that iMovie recognises and imports.
So long as they are of good quality, you should be able to use the Ken Burns zoom function to 'crop' them even after they are already in your project.
To batch alter the duration of your stills, firstly select them, then make the adjustment in the Photos Pane and click 'Update'. Note, though, that transitions must be re-rendered (a note to that effect will appear on the screen).

  • Incredibly slow photo import into iMovie 11

Can anyone tell me how to speed up the uploading of photos for a time lapse movie into iMovie 11?  I am trying to upload 3232 8 meg pics, and so far it has been 14 hours.  At the current upload rate, it looks like it will take about 18 hours total.  This seems to me to be ridiculously long, but I can't seem to find a way to upload them any faster.  As a recent convert to Mac, I am mostly impressed with my new iMac, but on this point it is like a drunken dinosaur.  Any help appreciated, including any tips on any free program other than iMovie that I might use to speed up the process.

Matt- thanks for the response.   To be honest, I was recording in whatever the default mode was.   I did not realize there was a 60i vs a 60p.   I will look into that.
As far as imports go- I have the camera hooked up to the usb port of my iMac and have iMovie running.   I selected import from the camera and it brings up the window I described in my post.  I also tried to just import movies- but got the same response.

  • Why won't iPhone photos import into iPhoto?

When I try to import photos from iPhone 4S to iPhoto '08 I get a message saying it doesn't recognize the files. I can see the photos fine on my phone and can even text message and email them without any problem. Every time I try to import new photos I get this same message. Therefore, I have not been able to import any new photos or videos I've taken for over a month. Please, anyone out there know how to solve this problem?

Good to read and note error messages - it turns out that there is a reason to have them - they often explain problems and the solution to the problem
Do you have any new photos in the camera roll that have not been previously imported? have you triedPhotoStream - that is generally the prefered way to import photos now? What happens when you click on the phone in the source pane?
