Solution to "Printing Error" with HP C4780

Hi all,
Had a bit of a wrestling match with this printer today when I increased firewall security from "Low" (Allow all outbound connections that do not match a rule) to "Medium" (Dis-allow all outbound connections that do not match a rule).
This was using Windows Firewall, on a Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit machine.
No-where seemed to have a comprehensive list of protocols that needed to be allowed anywhere, so I thought I'd post my 2 cents here.
The HP Photosmart C4780, and most other printers from what I can tell receives print jobs on TCP port 9100, however the Solution centre and status monitoring programs communicate on UDP port 161,427 and TCP port 445, these must all be allowed in order for both the printing and status monitoring to work.
For me because I'm security concious I only wanted to allow communication between specific IP's, this requires setting your HP printer and your computer to a Static IP, a brilliant tool from PortForward.com can set your computer's IP static while HP have a guide on how to set the printer to Static via the setup program.
Once this is done in "Advanced Firewall Settings" set your computer's IP as the 'Local Address' and the printer's IP as the "Remote Address" for all the rules you create.
Again because my network is comprised of a router and 2 access points DHCP gets messy, this meant that for the TCP 9100 rule I had to define the remote port as 'Local Subnet' and the Local Port as a range of 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254 - everything now works perfectly!
So to summarise;
1)
- Decide whether you want restrict communication based on IP addresses.
- Set your computer's IP address to static, either manually or using PortForward.com's utility.
- Set your printer's IP address to static using the HP setup program.
- Write down both IP's.
2)
- Open your firewall and add a new "Outbound Rule"
- Select the UDP protocol and input ports 161 and 427 as the remote ports to be allowed (specify remote and local IP's here if you wish too)
- Add another outbound rule, select TCP and input ports 9100 and 445 as the remote ports to be allows (again specify remote and local IP's here if you wish).
3)
A restart shouldn't be required, just close the HP Solution Centre program and open it again, then try a test print using notepad or word.
Your done!
Cheers.
H.

Hi @Maor-S
I have a feeling the issue may be resolved with the following Microsoft Hotfix;  A wireless, high-quality print job to a WSD port is automatically canceled on a Windows 8.1 computer...
Details and other possible solutions can be found in the following HP document; Wireless HP Printer Prints a Partial Page or Fails to Print All Pages in Windows 8.
I hope this helps. Please let me know if this resolves the issue, thanks.

  • HP LaserJet Pro 300 color MFP runs cleaning and Mis Prints Error with Printing above 5 pages

I have an HP Pro 300 Printer with New genuine cartridges. But when I print or make copies of multi page jobs it always comes up with a message on the screen which says "cleaning"  and then give a "Mis Printer Error".The printer is out of warranty. The Print quality is excellent but the error it gives all the time is a major problem. Has anyone solution for this? Please help! Thanks

Restoring the defaults doesnt usually purge out the memory of a printer.  You need a cold reset to complete that proceedure. Cold Reset steps:http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Issues-Troubleshooting/HP-LaserJet-Pro-200-color-MFP-M276nw-Cold-reset/td-p/5060955 The video at the bottom of the first page is very helpful.

  • How can I fix this printer error with Samsung SCX-4300 and SCX-4521f on Windows Server 2008 R2?

I have two printers installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit):
    1. Samsung SCX-4521f
    2. Samsung SCX-4300
There are two computers (Windows 7 Professional, 32-Bit) connected to this server that utilise these shared printers.
The drivers installed are as follows:
    SCX-4x21_Win7_Print.exe (Win 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/Win 7    3.04.96:03    Print Driver    11 Dec, 2009    12.37    MULTI LANGUAGE)
    SCX-4300_Print.exe (Win 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/Win 7(32,64bit) 3.04.95:07 Print Driver Jan 19, 2011 53.07 MULTI LANGUAGE)
After printing documents for some time (within a 24 period) the printers no longer respond to print requests.
On the server opening "Control Panel\Hardware\Devices and Printers" shows the two printers with yellow exclamation marks.
The "SCX-4x21" printer shows the "Status" as "Needs troubleshooting" and "Printer: Error".
The "SCX-4300" printer shows the "Status" as "Needs troubleshooting".
Neither will print a test page.
Searching for new drivers automatically returns saying: "The best driver software for your device is already installed".
The error persists and nothing will print.
When double-clicking on the "SCX-4x21" printer (or going to "Control Panel\Hardware\Devices and Printers\Samsung SCX-4x21 Series") you see the following:
"Printer: Error" and "N document(s) in queue".
Clicking on either of these brings up the print queue and shows a document with the status of "Error - Printing".
As each job with an error is cancelled the next one attempts to print and also displays an error like the last.
Once all the jobs are cleared the printer information says "Printer: Ready".
Sending a "Print Test Page" sends the printer into an error state saying "Printer: Error".
With the "SCX-4300", sending a "Print Test Page" displays a bubble saying: "Toner Empty: Replace Toner".
However, I can't see any specific error messages.
How do I find out what exactly "Needs troubleshooting"?
    Please can anyone advise further?

The printer (SCX-4300) has stopped again.
Since it has been stopped I have done your recommendations:
Unticked the "Enable bidirectional support" option under the "Ports" tab in the printer properties.
Set the "Interactive Services Detection" to Automatic and started it.
Unfortunately the printer did not start printing, the print jobs did not restart or delete.
I decided to check the Operational logs that we enabled.
The first job I see goes like this:
    Information: Rendering job 41.
Error: The print spooler failed to delete the file C:\Windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS\00041.SHD, error code 0x2. See the event user data for context information.
Information: The print job 41 was sent through the print processor SSE1MPC on printer Samsung SCX-4300 Series, driver Samsung SCX-4300 Series, in the isolation mode 1 (0 - loaded in the spooler, 1 - loaded in shared sandbox, 2 - loaded in isolated
sandbox). Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 0x0.
    Information:Printing job 41.
    Information:Spooling job 41.
    This job actually printed.
Other jobs printed fine with no error.
There are no other errors in the "Operational" log other than the "print spooler failed to delete" error.
Any ideas what to try now?
Update: Unticking the "Enable bidirectional support", clearing the print queue and then trying again seems to have fixed the problem for now.

  • Printer error with HP Laserjet 6L and Windows 7

I have an old but still functional HP Laserjet 6L (from the late 1990s), which is connected to a new computer running Windows 7 via USB. Windows 7 found the necessary drivers, but I am having frequent printer errors come up in the Printer queue, and the machine refuses to print. The problem is 'solved' when I restart my PC, and the document then prints. However this is a pain, and I obviously don't want to have to restart every time I want to print.
I would be very grateful for any advice on this. Thanks.

I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at: http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-and-Digital-Imaging/ct-p/bsc-412

  • Printing Error with Canon MF6500

I'm trying to print with my Canon MF6500 but I keep getting a printer error saying that there is an error in the connection. The strange thing is that it was working fine a couple days ago. Here are a few things:
    Things I've Done:
-printed using another macbook with the same USB cord (worked)
-uninstalled and reinstalled ALL printers (did not work)
-downloaded the driver from the canon website (did not work)
    -used multiple USB cords
Things that might have caused the problem:
-Used a Canon Pixma iP1800 to print
-Used a HP photosmart C1300 to scan and print
another thing to note is that when I install the printer it doesn't automatically detect the software anymore, I have to select the proper printer driver (Canon MF6500 UFR II)

    anguonly wrote:
Maybe the process "UFR II BackGrounder" is the problem but I don't want to shut out something important
The Backgrounder service provides communication between the UFR2 driver and the Mac. If this service fails to run and connect to the printer then it will cause errors, such as the one you are having. You could look at stopping this service, it will restart by itself, or restarting the Mac will do the same.
    With all that you have done so far I suggest you look at removing the UFR2 driver and associated files and then install v2.21 again. First remove the existing MF6500 printer queue in Print & Fax. Then trash the following files;
    System Volume/Library/Printers/Canon/UFR2
    System Volume/Library/LaunchAgents/jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist
    System Volume/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/CNTD**Z*2.ppd.gz
Where * indicates a character string that represents the printer model, and 2 indicates a character string that represents the corresponding language.
Then restart the Mac and install the v2.21 UFR2 driver.

  • Printer error with InDesign CS4

I have the Adobe Master Collection installed on Windows 7 64bit (Pruchased through MS Volume License).  Before installing windows 7, the system had Windows Vista Business 64-bit installed and had the same problem, so it is not OS related.  Connected directly to the computer via USB cable is an HP Design Jet 130.  All programs are able to print to it without any problems including Photoshop (64bit), Adobe Acrobat, Illustrator (32bit), Excel, Word, etc.  However, when trying to print a document from InDesign, I get the following error:
print driver host for 32bit applications has stopped working
After click ok, the printer selection box comes up, with the post script printer selected.  When you go and try and change the printer to ANY other printer including the DJ130, I get the following error:
Printer selection failed.  Restoring the previous selection.
I am still able to print documents from InDesign by saving them as a PDF and then opening them and printing them with Adobe Acrobat Pro, however, I should not have to do this, and this can become very time consuming.  The printer is also shared on the network with two other computers and they have no problem printing to it from InDesign.  Before I installed Windows 7, I completely un-installed the Master Collection.  After Win7 was installed, I re-installed the Master Collection, and I was able to print perfectly from Adobe InDesign.  It seems that one of the updates breaks it's printing capabilities with this printer, or at least on this system.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, or are there any other things that I can try to resolve this?  I have 8GB of RAM in the system and don't really see switching to a 32 bit OS to be an option as I would loose the ability to use 1/2 of my memory.

I am having the exact same problem. I have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and Design Premium CS 5.5.  InDesign is the ONLY program that will not print to any printer. I get the "Printer selection failed." error every time I select any printer, even the Adobe PDF one. I have a Brother printer, an HP Plotter, and even an Oce copier/printer.  InDesign gives the error no matter what printer is selected form its own list.  Photoshop and Acrobat do not give me any issues, nor does any of the MS Office programs nor Autodesk softwares.  It's only InDesign that fails.  Reparing doesn't do anything and reinstalling every printer driver is pointless because it's only InDesign that produces the error.
Does anyone know what to do to fix this?

  • Printer Error with Shared USB printer

    Greetings;
I have just installed my HP 7760 on my new G5, and I am attempting to print via shared usb to my G3 Imac which is running 10.3.9 I have used this setup lots in the past but with both MAC's running 10.3.9, Now all I get is "Print Error"!
I can see the shared printer on the G3 and select it on the G5 but it just results in a print error when I attempt to print.
Any thoughts would be most helpful

    Hi Greg;
    Many thanks for your interest in my problem. I have done the following;
    1. Installed the latest drivers from HP on both machines
    2. Removed and then added the printer.
    3. Repaired permissions on both computers and restarted.
This seems to be related to 10.4.3 as I have read some references to this in other threads. Prior to the G5 with 10.4.3 I was printing with the G3'es under 10.3.9 using USB sharing with no problems. I have no problem printing from either computer when the printer is connected directly and I can see the shared printer in printer setup and have no problem selecting it however I am still getting the "print error" when printing to the shared printer.
I am going to try one more experiment, I no have the printer connected directly to the G5 with printer sharing turned on. I will try to print to it from the G3and see what happens. I will post the results when complete.

  • Officejet G85xi printer errors with Windows office 8

I recently purchased a new PC with Windows 8.  I downloaded the most current drivers for my Officejet G85xi.  Each time  I try to print I get one or two good pages and then the printer stops and an error pops up in the control menu.

I used the G85xi without issues (other than paper supply out) using Window XP on older PC.  The printer has not worked properly since it has been connected to HP Envy 700-074 running Windows 8.1.  When I am lucky I get 2 full pages of print before "print error" appears.  I have tried Printer Doctor, deleting the printer and re-adding it, set higher priority, checking USB 2.0 port connetion, etc.  It usually will finish a text document not much more than a single page, but PDF documents are very limited.  I have spent hours trying to print one 9-page PDF document.  Should I ditch what was a wonderful printer?  Should I ditch a new HP PC with Windows 8.1?   Even if I buy a new printer, can I trust it will not stop printing on page 2 or 3 in the middle of the page?

Hi. I don't have a printer attached tot eh computer but I want to save a document as a PDF. I can do this in all applications other than iWork applications. printer Error comes up. Anyone know how to solve this problem?

    It seems a bit odd.
I'm able to do that on the iMac intel inside which I uses for trsts.
I never connected a printer to this beast and the Print to PDF feature works perfecly (I didn't try the export to PDF entry).
Sounds as a corrupted file somewhere.
    You may try to trash:

  • PDF printing errors with InDesign CS4 docs

I've discovered somewhat belatedly that since upgrading from CS3 to CS4, every pdf I have created in InDesign (a dozen or more) won't print. After a general error message, "the document could not be printed," I get one or both of these messages: "there were no pages selected to print" or "a drawing error occurred." I have variously tried every page selection option to no avail. I have also tried recreating the pdfs from the original ID files with different export settings, again with no success. PDFs exported from other programs are not a problem, nor is printing from InDesign. I'm on a Mac. Any thoughts?

My (admittedly Clonescript) HP prints this without error messages but prints in Courier anything done in Optima ExtraBlack, which claims to be embedded, but seems not to be. My PCL printer prints this without errors or problems.
If I bring this back into CS4 and export back to PDF, it prints properly in Optima ExtraBlack.
If I edit it in Acrobat 7, I can change Optima Extrablack (not on system) to Optima Extrablack (on system) and it prints properly.
I would want to look into your Optima Extrablack font. First try substituting different fonts, something generic like Helvetica (not as a solution, just as a test). If that fixes it, try substituting something generic only for Optima Extrablack (the "A House of BRIC" head and the drop folio). If that fixes it, make a document that uses only Optima Extrablack. If that fails, look into uninstalling and reinstalling Optima Black.
BTW, you don't have Reader 8 and Acrobat Pro 9 installed on the same machine, do you? This is not recommended, although I don't know what particular problems it causes.
There's quite a bit about the drawing error if you google it. In particular, this might be relevant (while somewhat off-color): http://groups.google.com/group/adobe.acrobat.windows/msg/8dc9a7dfea59a57d?hl=en&

  • Unable to communicate with printer error with HP Envy 4500

Hi I am having trouble printing with my Envy 4500 printer. My computer system is Windows 8.1. I installed the driver per instruction from the website and use the usb cable to connect the printer. However when I tried to print a pdf document it says "Unable to communicate with printer" and I can't get the test page to print either. Please help! Thanks in advance!

Hi @Casey_Z , and welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you're having issues printing.  I would like to help!
I'd recommend removing the ink cartridges, and performing a power reset.  Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the power outlet, then wait 60 seconds. After 60 seconds, plug the printer back in. Ensure you plug the printer directly to a wall outlet. Make sure to bypass any sort of surge protector or power bar.
I'd then suggest downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • Printing Error with second user.

    Thanks in advance everyone.
Here is my issue, I have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 connected to a network printer with two user accounts, The first user account works fine and can print, however the second account cannot. It gives me the "Error Printing" message which is really helpful.
I have tried re-adding the printer, and deleting com.apple.pint... preferences files, and repairing the permissions.
    Any insight would be wonderful.
    Thanks,
    Paul

In the second account ~/Library/Printers select the printer and Command + i. to open Get Info and check the *Ownership and permissions* down the bottom, to see if the second user can read and write to that printer.
