Solutions For "Could not initialize the application's security component..." NOT Working

When opening today Thunderbird the following message appeared: "Could not initialize the application's security component"
My computer has over 80Gb free space
I deleted Cert8 and restarted, that did not fix the issue
I ensured that the 'Read Only' option for Cert8 is unchecked, still the problem remained
I uninstalled Thunderbird and reloaded, that did not help either.
Could be a corrupted Cert8, well I do not wish to risk losing valuable non-Thunderbird data by creating a new profile (the only other suggested solution)
Please can someone get me out of this mess, as I'm unable to access my emails.

Delete the '''cert8.db''' file in the Thunderbird profile folder.
This will remove all intermediate certificates that Thunderbird has stored.
Info on profile here:
* http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
Make sure Thunderbird is closed before deleting the '''cert8.db''' file.

    When I open the application the following alert appears: "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory." There is a solution on the support site but only for Windows-based Firefox, and I'm a Mac user. I have plenty of room on my hard disk.

    In Mac OS X v10.7, the $HOME/Library folder is a hidden folder.
    Open Finder and use one of these:
    * Go > Go To Folder (Shift-Command-G) and in the dialog type: ~/Library
    * Open the "Go" menu and hold down the Option key to make the Library appear
    You can also use this command in a Terminal window to remove the hidden flag.
    * Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    * chflags nohidden ~/Library

    When I click OK I get my home page (google), but nothing works: no web sites will open. I have downloaded the new version of firefox and carried out a defraggle without success.

    This solution worked for me:

    The step that worked for me was to locate and delete the cert8.db file.

    After one week, I haven't any answer...
    I would like to write me first: How do I fully uninstall and then: how to install Firefox;

    Rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] in case there is a problem with the file.
You may have to rename cert8.db (cert8.db.old) as well.
Firefox will create new files. If that works then you can remove the renamed files.

  • Could not initialize the application's security component when clicking on a hyberlink from LotusNotes, default browser Firefox

    I have Lotus Notes 8.5 installed on Windows 7 computer.
    Firefox 4.0.1 works fine.
