Solutions for using jvc's new hard drive video cam

does anyone have any experience using jvc's new hard drive video camera (GZ-MG50U) with usb in puts on OS 10.3.9? any suggestions on software soltuions to edit captured video?

Just to give you a quick run down on what MPEG-2 is... it is a highly compressed format, meaning that the moment your footage was saved as an MPEG-2 file, information was thrown away. That's what compressors do, throw away redundant information such as color information. So technically, the image in MPEG-2 is not as good as if it were captured in DV... on the flipside of that, converting that DV footage into MPEG-2 would reduce the quality of the DV footage, so technically, you would be even at this point.
Where things get ugly is when you take that compressed footage and convert it into another format for editing. This process is lossless, but the file size bloats immensely in the process. Which means when you take that converted and edited footage and run it through the compressor again to convert it back into MPEG-2 so that you can burn it onto a DVD, it has lost still more information than the original footage that you shot. If you take any footage and run it through a compressor several times, it's like re-recording over the same VHS tape... each recompression reduces quality.
This is why you don't want a device to goes directly to MPEG-2, whether it be directly to a DVD disc or a hard drive. DV and HDV are both editable formats... yes you have to capture the footage and then convert it to MPEG-2, but you also have the opportunity to edit it along the way. Cameras that go straight to MPEG-2 assume that you don't intend to edit anything, just burn it to a disc and call it good... sort of like owning a disposable camera... you're buying the convenience of not having to do anything with it.

For restoring, does a new hard drive constitute a "new Mac"?

I have a current Time-Machine backup, and I replaced a failing hard drive with a brand new one.
But instructions for restoring an entire system via Time Machine differ, depending upon whether you're restoring "to the same Mac" (Time Machine is required) or "to a different Mac" (Migration Assistant is required).
While I am in fact restoring to the same Mac, if it has a new hard drive, does the OS consider that to be a "new Mac"?
I had trouble restoring from Time Machine, once before -- tricky business with user accounts, etc. -- so it's critical that I do this the correct way, so that I can inherit the existing Time-Machine backup history.

On the Final Cut studio page there is a hardware compatibility utility...is there something similar for Final Cut Express? If not, can anyone tell me about hard-drive-based video cameras which can work with FCE?

The only hard drive based cameras that FCE works with without third party support are cameras that shoot AVCHD.

Can you use a Sony DCR-SR60E hard drive video camera with FC-Express?

Friend of mine in OZ has just bought this camera and I am trying to help her out from the UK! LOL. The camera only has USB and does NOT have firewire. Am I right in thinking that she is not going to be able to use this camera with Final Cut Express, or is there a way round this? The shop she bought it from is useless when it comes to support. Any help would be great. At the moment I have said she would be better off taking it back and changing it for a mini DV camera with firewire.

You can't use the camera with FCE because it shoots in a format not supported by digital video systems on the Mac. FCE edits only DV or HDV material. This camera doesn't shoot one of those.

Did you partition and format the flash drive first? See the following:

After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.

Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

Hp 6310y can't get new hard drive to load windows 7

model 6310y -- Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
My desktop PC stopped working. I took it to local computer store and they said it was HD. I bought new hard drive and tried to install retail Windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS. I got an error message Code 0x80070002.
I called HP support....they told me I needed their brand of recovery discs because the motherboard or BIOS wouldn't allow me to install Windows 7 on the new replacement HD w/o it being their (HP) discs. So I ordered them...$17
I bought another new HD and tried to install Windows 7 OS with the HP recovery discs. This time got Error Code 0xe0ef000e.
I should mention both times trying to install OS on new replacement HD...it got approx 8 to 12 minutes into installation before getting error messages.
I called HP support....this time was told that the retail version of Windows 7 OS should have worked and that I didn't need the HP brand recovery discs when installing new replacement HD. They offered me to pay $199 and send them my desktop to fix it....all inclusive fix.
Very confused. I have never encountered anything like this before...I've had mulitple hard drives die over the years and have replaced them myself and installed all the software including OS myself w/o any problems like this.
Memory checked out ok when utilizing the diagnostics f9 key .... it did show problems with HD during one of my many diagnostic attempts
Not sure if its a bad motherboard or built in video card ..... not sure how to find out either....since I can't get the PC up and running
It will boot to blue HP screen & most of time won't allow me to get into f10, f9 or esc screens.
Not sure if its worth paying $200 to fix this or go and buy a new one for around the same price.

1) A retail OS should have worked. That particular motherboard's NVidia Sata controller chip had a bad batch. You need to make sure the hard drive is recognized in the BIOS. If not, nothing can be done.
2) Their brand of recovery disks was wrong, and was acknowledged. What about your $17 ??
If you had either a retail OS, or the recovery Disks that you made, these are acceptable.
The HP version when used with a new hard drive require conditioning "CyberLink Recovery Discs utility resolves an issue where Recovery Discs sent from HP do not work on a new hard drive".

Tape versus hard drive HD camera

I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I just wanted to make sure of my decision. I've heard that tape is better because various editions of FCS may or may not have problems dealing with video recorded on a hard drive video camera. I've also heard that the quality is better with tape. And that you also might lose your footage if the hard drive goes kaput before you download the footage. I've decided to repair my 2 year old camera (over $560) because I love it to death. By the dealership is giving me flack about it because I can buy a hard drive camera for a lot cheaper. Am I right in keeping my tape based camera?

I've recently sold my tape based camera and have moved to cameras that use P2 cards. I love it! I can either log each clip with in and out points, or just dump everything onto the hard drive. The workflow is much faster for me.
It feels good to not be "consuming" plastic and everything else that comes with tape. In fact--there is a "green your film production" movement within our micro-industry of wildlife filmmaking. One of the suggestions is to get rid of tape based systems.
Which reminds me--anyone want a Sony DSR DV tape deck?
But honestly I jumped from a DV camera (Canon XL2) to a Panasonic HD camera...so the quality jump helped lessen the sting of nostalgia . Kind of like going from film SLR to digital SLR. I kinda miss the dark room.
I certainly understand, though--if you were like me it wasn't just the camera--it was all the lenses that went with that tape based camera, the (once) expensive tape deck that connected to the computer, etc. etc.
I'll tell you though--ten years ago I was spending almost $50 per tape for HD CAM. It feels good to not incur that expense any more. You certainly second guess pushing the trigger when tape is not cheap--and then there's film... We won't go there...
Really, it just depends on your projects, who your intended audience is and what makes sense for your film budget. We could all drown in debt trying to keep up with this technology. The problem is, it's all so cool! Good luck!

Either how do I locate it, and I've tried every trick I know, or how do I restore all of my songs from one of two sources. I have my old hard drive backedup on an external drive which should have all of my songs, and I have most of my songs on my old iPhone 3S which I'm using as a backup iPod.

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place. In the case of a library moved from one system to another there are also potential permissions issues. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

I entered Iphoto for my user and only photo up until 2012 were in the library. I thought the restore would do the incremental Time Machine backups too.....

It usually means you are running Mavericks but have an earlier version of iPhoto. Open the App Store and upgrade your version of iPhoto to the Mavericks version.

Restoration of Lenovo T500 to new hard drive using Rescue & Recovery

I bought a new hard drive and I have been having a frustrating time trying to migrate the image of my hard disk to the new drive. When I bought my T500, it came with Windows Vista Business 64, but I have since downgraded it to Windows XP Pro.
Up to now, I was faithfully using Norton Ghost 14 to back up my drive to my USB Western Digital MyBook Mirror Edition 1TB drive. However, I get errors when I try to restore the image to my new drive (and I will be posting that issue to Norton's forum).
While I have not completely given up on Norton Ghost, I decided I might be able to restore the image using the Rescue & Recovery software. I downloaded and installed R&R 4.21.0016.00. After I installed it, I backed up my system to the MyBook Mirror Edition.
I then shut down the computer and put in the new hard drive (a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BEKT). I used a disc that I burned from the ThinkVantage Create Recovery Media utility to boot the machine. While the environment loads just fine, it does not detect my USB hard drive. NOTE: I didn't make my USB drive bootable, I only stored the backup files there.
I tried going into the PC Doctor utility and discovered that there is an "unidentified" USB device under the mouse section, which I presume is the MyBook.
I have hunted high and low for an answer to this both on Lenovo and Western Digital's web sites, but I can't seem to come up with a reason why my drive is not visible to R&R, or a way to load the WD drivers into this recovery environment. I found http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Rescue-and-Recovery-does-not-recognize-USB-driv..., and I followed the instructions - there is a minus sign next to the USB boot device in the bios. However, saving the bios and rebooting the computer (as the post suggested) does nothing to change that setting.
I have tried upgrading the bios to the latest version, but still no luck detecting the USB drive.
I am thinking about resorting to buring a backup of my entire system to DVDs and then restoring using the DVD drive. However, since my current backup is 60GB, I imagine that will take 15 discs.
Whether that fixes my immediate problem or not (that is, transferring to my new drive), I still don't have an answer for a long term solution in case of hard drive failure. Ghost is not working with my current configuration. And if I use R&R for backup, it will do me no good if I cannot get it to connect to my USB drive to recover. Furthermore, as far as I can tell there is no way to burn an existing restoration point to DVD - meaning I would have absolutely no way to restore if my hard drive failed.
I have been working on this migration for 3 full days already, and since I had my system images backed up I thought that this would be a trivial task. Any suggestions at this point would be welcomed.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I wanted to restore single files from an USB disk. Two larger file (500MB each) went through that process quite fast (3 minutes). A folder with many small files takes forever.
What's strange is that my notebook hard drive is at 100% activity all the time, while the USB disk is hardly read.
