[SOLVED] A matter of fonts.

Hello friends. I recently saw that due to legal issues we cannot get from the repositories the W7 fonts but I have a dual boot so i have access to all Macrosoft fonts just by entering into the windows partition. So my question is, can i install the fonts just by copying and pasting them into my arch font folders or do i need to do something else?

Take a look at the ttf-win7-fonts package in the AUR. There are clear instructions in the PKGBUILD file.
In this case you will probably want to download and extract the tarball manually. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ar … g_packages

Perhaps you could reset the tools using this method:
1) Launch PSE in Editor Mode
2) click on the Expert Tab
3) At the bottom right corner look for something like this :
This should solve the problem quickly.

[Solved] Insanely small e17 fonts

Upon doing a 'pacman -S e17-svn' install of 17, I start it up (using startx), and things seem ok except for the fact that the fonts are literally thinner than the border of this post new topic box. I just got the whole system up running and wanted to install this as my default WM (I had been trying it out on BSD earlier before I installed Arch last night.) Whatever popped out of Xorg -configure with those ServerFlags settings to make mouse and keyboard work is my current Xorg config (radeonhd driver for my ati r580, 1920x1200 monitor resolution) - this is what I did on BSD too, standard stuff is no different.
One other side note, whenever I do hwd -e, it says my graphics card is using vesa, even though I have radeonhd (for now) installed and completely removed xf86-video-vesa package, but my Xorg -configure pops up radeonhd for me.

[solved]systemd and console font

Hi guys. I've just switched my laptop over to systemd and so far I'm finding it great! I am, however, having a slight issue with getting it to set a console font, err, properly.
KEYMAP=uk
FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
Before switching to systemd, this worked fine. However now when I boot up, the font is set early (I have the hook in mkinitcpio.conf) but once I get to the login screen, the screen flickers and I end up back on the default font. I've tried this with several of the available fonts and it happens with all of them. I don't have it set anywhere else, so I'm not sure why the font is being reset. Has anyone else come across this issue yet?

Yes, I did rebuild it. I didn't have the video driver in MODULES though; adding it has now solved the issue. Don't know why I hadn't added i915 to that array though.

[SOLVED]A nice sharp font renderer (not as sharp as windows)

Is there another font renderer out there? I tried freetype the default and that gives me blurry edges. Infinality is not better in my opinion. Same blurry edges too many configurations. Are there any other renderers out there?

I tried every conf.d symlink in the /etc/fonts/infinality/styles.conf.avail folder. I just can't get the fonts to be sharp with nice uniform smoothness. They look garbled.
I just tried the ubuntu freetype and it looks worse.

It's a bit long I don't do maintenance. But very same situation is happening on her ubuntu installation, which is gnome-terminal. But I don't count it.
Soon I'll report the details.
EDIT Actually I'm using monospace 10 for lxterminal seems that the kerning is fine. Also the locale freshly generated doesn't affect the readout.

[SOLVED] Difficulty installing .pcf font

I have moved the .pcf.gz to /usr/share/fonts/misc (which is in my xorg.conf), changed ownership to root and reloaded my font cache as per the fonts wiki, logged out and in and it still doesn't show up in xfontsel...
Is there anything in particular I need to do with .pcf fonts - or should it just be a standard manual install?

Solved by doing th following:
xset -fp /usr/share/fonts/misc
xset -fp rehash
You can check the font has been added with
xlsfonts | grep fontname
This forces X server to rescan all the fonts.dir files, thereby updating the new fonts...

I tried Infinality (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … Infinality) for font-hinting a few days / weeks ago. Everything worked fine until I recently did - like every day - a
pacman -Syu
since that update my Fonts are all Squares now. Only the real standard fonts (e.g. Bitstream Vera Sans) are displayed correctly now.
Uploaded with ImageShack.us also tried already a
# pacman -S --asdeps freetype2 libxft cairo fontconfig
and I refreshed my font cache via
$ fc-cache -vf
I even followed the described command
pango-querymodules > '/etc/pango/pango.modules'
in https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=51316.
But none of the above mentioned worked. Would someone please be so kind and help me out?
UPDATE: Meanwhile I tried a
# pacman -Rscn gnome
and reinstalled gnome & gnome-extra. But this doesn't work either, fonts like 'Verdana' aren't displayed correctly.
UPDATE 2: After deleting my manual installed Windows 7 fonts and reloading the cache everything works fine now. I don't know why, but it works

I fixed this by uninstalling gnome, all config files for pkg's removed, their dependencies, and all packages that depend on those - with the following command
pacman -Rscn gnome
This removed A LOT of packages. Then I had to reinstall gnome and my fonts were once again readable.
Before anyone tells me how stupid I was for doing that, or how there may have been a simpler theoritical solution - realize that I use my computer for work daily. I had made a few posts and wasn't getting the help I needed so I had to figure something out. I tried removing gnome and all it's packages without the '-n' option (config files), but that didn't work. So I reloaded gnome, then retried with the '-n' option and that did work.
I googled this and apparently many other people had this problem with gnome (not Arch-specific), but nobody gave any workable solutions to any of them either. Hopefully someone smarter than me can comment on the true cause of this, and maybe deduce a better solution - as I am sure some other poor sap will run into the same problem and surely come across this thread.
I appreciate everyone's input on this, and hopefully someone will chime in here with a much simpler solution that wont cause as much trouble as it did for me.

I'm already using ubuntu font packages, and using the same options (/etc/fonts/conf.d looks 99% same), but fonts in Ubuntu look more sharp.
I can't figure out where is the difference in configuration.

[solved] Cannot load Fira font in Xresources

Hello,
I wanted to try out Mozilla's new Fira font in Urxvt. The font is used when I start Urxvt with:
urxvt -fn "xft:Fira Mono OT:size=9:antialias=true:hinting=true"
However, if I put the same line in ~/.Xresources (and of course merge via xrdb), Fira is not used.
Any explanation why it is not working in Xresources?

I forgot that I was running Urxvt in daemon mode. That is, merging Xresources would not affect any new client unless I restart the daemon process itself.

[SOLVED] Cannot get japanese fonts working in console

First time with Arch. Did a clean install yesturday with Plasma as my choice of GUI.
I have everything work, except for getting Japanese font support in consoles.
First, fonts worked inside Dolphin, but looked terrible. So I added the infinality repos and installed infinality-bundle, infinality-bundle-multilib, ibfonts-meta-base, and ibfonts-meta-extended.
This was probably overkill, but fonts look perfect in both my file manager and applications, but still no support in console, konsole, uxterm, or yakuake terminals.
Then I made sure both "en_US.UTF-8" and "ja_JP.UT8" inside of /etc/locale.gen were uncommended and then ran "locale-gen" as root to generate the locales. After a reboot the fonts still wont work, the appear as ? in console.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After a lot of messing around, I finally got it to work.
Not only did "en_US.UTF-8" and "ja_JP.UT8" need to uncommented, but also "en_US.ISO-8859-1" and "ja_JP.EUC-JP".
Running "sudo locale-gen" then returned:
Generating locales...
en_US.UTF-8... done
en_US.ISO-8859-1... done
ja_JP.EUC-JP... done
ja_JP.UTF-8... done
Generation complete.
As expected. Oddly enough, the output of "locale" has not changed at all, but now japanese fonts show up correctly in shell and terminals, even without a reboot!

[SOLVED]Viewing Bengali(Indic) font in Dolphin File Browser

Somedays ago, I needed to reinstall Arch. Upon reinstall, the support for the bengali language in dolphin is lost. Tweaking with locale had no result. It's frustrating for me so much as I have a lot of files in bengali name that I can't no more understand what it actually is. I would appreciate it a lot if you guys help me out.

Sorry, I solved it. The problem was KDE overwritting my locale file with it's environment variable. Had no idea how to disable it, so uninstalled kde, set the locale.gen and locale .conf again. Reinstalled KDE and voiloa...... It works perfectly now.

[SOLVED] Arch versus Ubuntu fonts

Hi.
To not sound like heretic, I need to state that I use Arch as my main distro, but install Ubuntu to my friends so I keep that one on my machine as well.
I recently compared fonts on this two distros and I have to say, Ubuntu fonts look much better to me. See the images of Pidgin and Apperance Preferences.
Arch is on the left side, Ubuntu on the right.
As you can see, my preferences and fonts are set to be the same. I read wiki page on this, which suggests some ubuntu modified packages from AUR. I remember that once I had some cairo-lcd (and some other) packages installed, but I think I remember them being replaced during some upgrades.
Is it worth to build this cairo-ubuntu and couple of other packages and will it produce fonts like in ubuntu or not?
Anyone has suggestion how can I get my fonts like ubuntu has?

Ah, good point Surgat_ with the higher version and the 'provides', hadn't thought of that.
Ragua, about the jpegs, I'm not sure how you encoded them but I still think it is pretty standard for jpegs to be lossy. I'm only familiar with gimp and imagemagick and I'm pretty sure they both use lossy (though quality 95 might be lossless???). It is also possible that hosting service converted these images to lossy which, in either case, I guessing they probably did.
As to the font look, yeah, the Ubuntu fonts look nice. From what I know there isn't much difference between the -lcd and -ubuntu fonts but I could be wrong. The largest difference between the two is that the ubuntu fonts come pre-configured with 'hintslight' which appears to me to be better developed that the other standards. Anyways, the point seems to be null now , glad you like your fonts.

[Solved]Firefox 3.5 Fonts gone wrong

Since the upgrade to 3.5 my firefox fonts have messed up. Seems to be a problem with hinting not being taken from gnome font preferences no-more.
I updated cairo and applied the lcd patch to it myself but firefox fonts still remain the same.
I have read ppl on ubuntu have had the same problem but the fix found there wont work with arch.
Any ideas?
