[SOLVED] Accidentally deleted graphical.target. Any way to resto..

Hello all. So here's the story: I was trying to get SLiM to run via `systemd` and was following the instructions detailed here:
# systemctl enable kdm.service
This should work out of the box. If not ....
/etc/systemd/system/default.target -> /usr/lib/systemd/system/graphical.target
Simply delete the symlink and systemd will use its stock `default.target` (i.e.`graphical.target`).
# rm /etc/systemd/system/default.target
By some strange form of dyslexia, instead of writing the code on the last step, I had written
# rm /usr/lib/systemd/system/graphical.target
Of course, without this file, I'm now unable to boot succesfully. I'm also quite sure that it's impossible (or at least extremely impractical) to recover a file removed in this fashion. Is there a default `graphical.target` that I could download or see the lines of text, so that I can remake it?
If I recall correctly, it was just 8-10 lines of text like other `.target` files, where half of it was commented out with some
[ 'something'] = something
written inbetween some of the comment lines. I appreciate your help!

Ah, I was under the assumption that `systemd` comes installed from the LiveCD/LiveUSB and not from `pacman`. I could definitely try reinstalling it with `pacman` right now and see what happens.

Thanks! I'll see if that works first.
EDIT: For anyone else as dumb as me in the future, the config works.

  • [SOLVED] Accidentally deleted two directories on a mounted external...

Is there any way to restore them? I had an external hard drive mounted at /media/extdrv/. On it, I had multiple directories, including:
    /media/extdrv/downloads
    /media/extdrv/movies
    /media/extdrv/music
    /media/extdrv/mukti
    /media/extdrv/paperthin
    /media/extdrv/anime
I was copying one folder to another using this command:
    sudo sudo cp -R downloads/\[LIME\]\ His\ And\ Her\ Circumstances/ anime/Kare\ Kano
The "Kare Kano" folder did not exist, which may have caused the problem? Now, when I list the files/directories under /media/extdrv/, I get nothing:
    [mukti@headcrab01 media]$ cd extdrv/
    [mukti@headcrab01 extdrv]$ ls
    [mukti@headcrab01 extdrv]$
I've heard of many different tools to fix this, but I have never used any of them (ddrescue, extundelete, etc). I didn't realize that that command would cause the deletion of all directories under /media/extdrv, but I suppose I was wrong? Is there anything else I should check before attempting to use one of these recovery tools? Is there a specific tool that might be more suited for my specific issue?
The external drive is formatted ext4:
    /dev/sda /media/extdrv ext4 defaults,nofail 0 0
There was well over 300GB of data on the drive, so any help is appreciated!

It actually looks like I not only entered sudo twice, I ran the command twice (the first time only using sudo once. From my history:
    486 sudo cp -R downloads/\[LIME\]\ His\ And\ Her\ Circumstances/ anime/Kare\ Kano
    487 sudo sudo cp -R downloads/\[LIME\]\ His\ And\ Her\ Circumstances/ anime/Kare\ Kano
Also, upon further investigation, this was another issue. I checked, and /dev/sda was not mounted, and sda was not listed under /dev. I ran over and found that the external hard drive was powered off (the system/ext hdd are not in the same room/on the same floor as I am). I was able to power it back up, but I'm not sure what would have caused this.
So I guess I posted this a bit too soon, and should have done some more investigation; however, I am curious as to why the drive would lose power. All other devices on the circuit were still powered on and running. Could the commands I issued have caused this?
This can be marked as solved, since my "problem" is no longer. Thanks for the help.
    EDIT:
I should also note, this 'event' has made me realize that I could not afford to lose some of the data on this drive. As a result, I'm going out to buy another as a backup.

  • Deleted an Effect any way to get it back PSE 7

    help,
ive deleted the glow effect by accident, thinking it would remove the glow from the image....
is there any way to get this back?
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
You need to delete the ThumbDatabase.db3 file placed at C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0 in Vista/Win 7 and
    C:\documents and settings\all users\application support\adobe\photoshop elements\8.0 in XP after closing PSE
Relaunch Editor this will take sometime to launch as it will build the database again. This will bring back the effects deleted accidently from PSE.

  • If an email alias was deleted, is there any way to get that alias back?

I was a .Mac and a MobileMe user and long ago I had created an email alias and subsequently deleted it. Is there any way to retrieve it for use now?
As an anecdotal observation, I have wondered why so many providers do not recycle (or allow to be reclaimed) deleted user names, email addresses and email aliases. It seems a waste to permanently "retire" such valuable and limited resources. I admire Twitter for allowing such flexibility.

There have been complaints of this sort from people trying to create completely new aliases: I don't know whether this is the same thing or is related to yours being a previously existing on.
You could try MobileMe Support (I know you're on iCloud but there is no free support for that unless you happen to have AppleCare, and MobileMe Support have helped some people). Go to http://www.apple.com/support/mobileme/ww/ and select your country. In the next window click on a category to expand it, then on a subject to get a link to 'live chat'.

  • Accidently deleted dvd player, any way getting it back?

Hey, i have been deleting some of my applications to have more room for movies, tv shows..... and i deleted dvd player, i thought i would not need this for anything but i need it for dvds and i cant watch them. Any way i could get dvd player back?
    Thanks

If it's not on the 10.5 application disk, then reload the operating system. An alternative would be to use VLC. Download the 32 bit Intel version.

  • Accidental damage to screen, any way to get it fixed?

I have a first-gen nano thats not quite a year old and today it got ran over by an electric wheelchair weighing about 350 lbs. Thankfully I have a very good double-layer cover that probably saved my nano's life, but it did get hurt. It still plays music and you can see the screen but it is really really faint and kind of blurry. Is there any way that Apple will fix this if I request service for it? I am totally willing to pay whatever it takes, I just don't want one of the new generation nanos. I heard they replace exactly what you have. Can someone please tell me what to do? I don't think any of the protection plans will help me at this point. Thank you so much!

  • [SOLVED] Cannot change GSettings in any way!

Hi, I have a huge problem. I cannot change any GSetting value as normal user. I tried dconf-editor, just can't change anything. I tried gsettings from terminal, it doesn't show any errors, but values are not changed whatever I do. As root this all works normally.
As a workaround I have tried copying .config/dconf/user from root to user account, doesn't work.
What can I do to fix this?

  • [solved] Eclipse looks ugly. Any way to change the theme?

I am using KDE, with the oxygen-gtk theme for gtk.
Most applications look pretty good for my taste.
    But then eclipse...
    ...it looks... bad...
I want a different theme for eclipse, and keep other applications on default, though I'm not sure if I need to apply another gtk+ theme or find a dedicated theme for eclipse.
I tried changing the theme in the "Appearance" preferences of eclipse, but that just makes it look worse.
I also tried searching for eclipse themes and tried some from here, but that only replaced the editor's theme.
It'd be nice if i could make eclipse look better.
    any help?

Holyshit, that work'd O.o (Eclipse throws an error at startup now tho)
    Thanks!
So here is a list of what I did to get a gtk theme properly working:
    1. Remove the css folder as explained here.
    2. Download the gtk theme and place it in .themes
    3. Created a gtkrc only containing the "gtk-theme-name" value.
    4. Launch eclipse the way Trilby said, with the "GTK2_RC_FILES" variable. (unless you are using that gtkrc globally)
    5. For a final touch, you may want to edit the editor's colors by either downloading one, or editing it yourself in Preferences -> Java/PyDev/Whatever_you_use -> Editor

  • Got my music deleted on computer, any way to sync music from iPhone to PC?

My dumb brother deleted my music thinking he could create a new itunes library with just the music he wanted by deleting my songs and just creating another shortcut on the desktop. How can I sync the music on my iPhone to my computer?
It's the only way to save all my music.

Only music bought in itunes can be transferred back to your computer using File->transfer purchases.
For the rest of your media data you'll have to use 3rd party software like [touchcopy|http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy] or similar. Software of this kind is not supported by Apple.

How can I lock a message against accidental deletion?

The safest way is to not use the Inbox for long term storage. Make folders for your important and keeper messages and move them out of the Inbox and into those folders. This also keeps your Inbox for the purpose it was designed for.

  • Any way to stop accidental deletion of events

I find is puzzling that it is necessary to double click an event and then click the edit button in order to change any aspect of an event, but you can easily delete an event by simply having it hi-lighted and hitting the backspace key. We have a shared calendar in the office and more than once people have accidentally deleted appointments.
Is there an add-on or a work around that will force iCal to throw up a confirmation warning before deleting the event or even a way to allow users to create and edit but not delete events?

    Mitchell Allen,
There is no workaround that I am aware of, but ICal>Edit>Undo Delete Event, menu command should be available immediately after an event is inadvertently deleted.
I suggest that you provide Apple - iCal - Feedback

  • Is there any way to retrieve accidentally deleted source clips?

I accidentally deleted source clips for a video project, and now the viewer won't show my video (although I can still see the frames when I run my cursor over the project). Is there any way to retrieve the files or show iMovie where to find the source clips on my computer, kind of like how it's possible to show iTunes where to find source mp3s on my computer when they're moved from the iTunes file? Since I can still see the frames when I move my cursor over the clips (with the exclamation points in the corners), it seems as though the memory of the edited clips must still be in iMovie somehow and be recoverable. Any help would be appreciated - I'd really like to avoid having to re-import and re-edit all of those clips!

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
