[Solved] Adding Printer Marks to a Pages document in Acrobat

By "Printer Marks" I mean "bleeds" and "crop marks".
A bleed is the area of the paper that will be trimmed off after the job is printed.
Crop marks indicate the exact place where the paper is to be trimmed.
Background:
I normally do programming and web development, but, after having spent about three hours fiddling around tryng to transform our Pages-made brochure into something to send to commercial printers, I thought I'd record the process so as not to waste so much time on the next occasion we do something similar.
I thought I'd share this with other Pages users because Pages has no native support for Printer Marks and PDF files contain this as metadata, so a commercial printer will expect this to be properly set up. I believe their printers may even read the PDF metadata.
Required:
Pages and Acrobat Pro. (I have Pages '09 and Acrobat 9 Pro - updated from the one originally distributed with Adobe CS3)
Recipe:
Set up a custom page size in Pages.
e.g. For an A4 sheet size (210 x 297 mm), the Pages "Page Setup" should specify 220 x 307 mm allowing for a 5mm bleed all round.
'Print' the document to 'Adobe Acrobat PDF' (which, for me, automatically opens up Acrobat Pro 9)
In Acrobat, go to: Advanced >> Print Production >> Crop Pages
The excellent article at http://www.prepressure.com/pdf/basics/page_boxes explains the Acrobat box model and points out that  PDF files will embed this important info for the printer:
The Trimbox  (defining the intended dimensions of the finished page): e.g. A4
the BleedBox and the MediaBox which are e.g. 5mm bigger all round the A4 sheet and will contain the Printer Marks.
So: You only need to edit the margins of the Trimbox on "All Pages". Acrobat will add the Printer Marks outside the TrimBox.
Ensure no other margins are accidentally edited.
The MediaBox is the imported page size and is not editable in the Crop Pages dialog
The  Bleedbox you wil most likely want to be the same as the Mediabox so won't need editing. Ensure it's 0,0,0,0.
The TrimBox is editable - and should be edited - here (e.g. add 5mm 'margins' all round to allow for the bleed.)
Click OK: Now if you specified margins for the CropBox …. but why would you? ... but this may be default Acrobat behaviour! .. you will have cropped out the screen area where the Printer Marks will be displayed.
Go to Advanced >> Print Production >> Add Printer Marks
I didn't check "All Marks" because I had a spurious Registration? "capstan" added in the middle of a page on one occasion. I checked Trim Marks, Bleed Marks and Color Bars. … on "All Pages".
Click OK; Command+S to save file.
Good to go!

  • Adding printer marks the quick way

    Is my workflow sound?
I print a magazine that has many many ads submitted by clients via pdf and the ads invariably  fail to contain printer marks, have no bleed set and are of improper page size. The ads are big enough to cover the proper page size and extend past the bleed but in order to add printer marks I have to set the art box, trim box, crop box and bleed box in Acrobat and then afterwards I can add printer marks. This is time consuming when you are dealing with over 300 ads and you have a deadline.
So, I just place and center the pdf in an empty InDesign document that has the proper page size and the proper bleed and just export it back to PDF using a preset that include printer marks. Easy Peasy.
My question is should I set Output (in the Export to PDF dialog box) to "No Color Conversion" since they are already cmyk pdfs? If I leave it to "Convert to Destination (Preserve Numbers) - which is my default - I assume that is fine too since the incoming ads are already separated for US Web Coated SWOP 2 and that is my default cmyk working space. I shouldn't have to worry about color changes either way correct?
I also set compression to none in the Export to PDF dialog box since the ad was already exported to pdf once already.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks.

Are all of these ads supposed to be full page w/ bleed? I've never understood why anyone would want marks or bleeds on anything that wasn't.
In any case, I can't see that adding marks to one of these ads before you place it is of much use to you. If you are presuming the centering when you add the marks, just presume that when you place the ad in the magazine (but perhaps I've misunderstood and that's what you are doing). There's no benefit to any intermediate addition of fictitious marks.
I would export the magazine using whatever your normal settings are. Preserve numbers is safe, it won't make rich black type, but colors will shift if the wrong space was used to create the ad. No conversion is probably not a good idea on the off chance that there are spot or RGB colors included -- you never know...
I also would use the refular compression settings you normally use. I've been told that ID "internalizes" placed PDF and handles the compression on the images just as if they were placed directly. It won't compress them more unless the original settings were higher than the ones you use.

  • C309a print copies of 1 page documents

I've been using Photosmart printers with duplexing for years. In the past, I've always left two-sided printing on "Automatically" as the default for general printing. If I had a one page document, and asked it to print, say, 3 copies of the document, I would get 3 pages with one side each.
I just intalled a C309a on the same Vista system I've been using in the past. I've set my printer default to "automatically" for two-sided printing. Now if I want to print several copies of a one-page document, it prints both sides of the page. So a request for 3 copies of a one-page document results in two printed pages - one page has the document printed on each side, plus one page has it on only one side.
The only way around this seems to be to alternate between printing shortcuts. If I have a one-page document, and I want several copies, I have to switch to the General setting with two-sided printing set to "off". If I want a multi-page document duplexed, I have to switch over to the Two-Sided printing setting. I'm disappointed because I didn't have to switch back and forth with any of my former Photosmart duplex printers.
Is my new C309a really supposed to work this way? Or should I be able to get 3 single-sheet copies of a one page document, even with two-sided printing set to "Automatically", like all my previous printers allowed?
    Thank you!

    audpilot,
    same boat, same printer...
this is not how the other printers worked.
    is there any workaround?

  • How to create a scrollable ( multi page) document using Acrobat 5.0 for Windows

How do I create a multi page document that can be scrolled through? I want to place one drawing, which I have in pdf format, on each page of the document then send it via email so the recipient can open it and scroll through the pages to see all the drawings.

Thank you so much for the prompt and succinct reply. I tried what you suggested and it worked very well. I am new to Acrobat and it is nice to know there are knowledgeable professionals that can grasp the essence of the problem and lead the way to the solution. Thanks!

  • Adding trim marks in Illustrator causing document to print as a smaller size

If anyone can help me with this issue I've been having I would greatly appreciate it!
I created a document in Illustrator which has 2 artboards, each 5 x 7 with a .125 bleed and trim marks (that I created once I saved it as a PDF)
Now, when I print the file in Illustrator, it prints normally- as two 5x7 artboards with trim marks and everything. When I try to save it as a PDF in Acrobat and print it from there, it prints the two artboards with trim marks but they have been downsized to 4 x 6. Adobe asks me on the phone today..."how do you know they are not printing as 5 x 7" Well, because I measured it.
What I did figure out is that it is definitely the trim marks that are causing the problem because as soon as I remove them, it prints true to size.
Anyways I need to print everything in PDF form so I can send it to my clients, so they can open the PDF and easily print it with the trim marks for easy cutting.
Adobe says it COULD be a problem with a printer setting, but Epson is saying there is nothing else I can do as far as the printing set up goes. I have an Epson Stylus Pro 3880 if this helps. So apparently I'm doing something wrong in Illustrator or Acrobat.
Has anyone else had this issue?

Create the trim marks in Illustrator, not Acrobat.  In Illustrator, create an invisible holding line around the artboard ( i.e., no fill, no stroke @ 5x7 size > then lock it in place ).  Make sure no elements fall outside the 5x7 size.

  • My MG5220 won't print an original 3 page document from rear tray.

I have only recently had trouble printing original documents from rear tray.  I have completed maintenance ( cleaning), checked paper media, etc.  I have checked page set-up, etc.  I think I am overlooking something that is obvious but I can't see the forest for the trees.  Please advise.  Thanks!

    Hi Kashmie,
To try and resolve the issue, with a flashlight or other bright light, please check the paper feed area of the printer and verify that there are no paper jams or obstructions in the printer that may be causing the paper not to feed.  Once this has been done, please look inside of the printer where the inks are located and ensure that there are no obstructions in there that may be causing the print head not to move freely.  Next, please remove and reseat all of the ink tanks in the printer.  Once all of these steps have been performed, if you still experience difficulty, please call or email us at one of the methods on the Contact Us page for further assistance.

  • Anyone solved the printing mixed sized (Letter/Legal) documents from Mac version of Reader or Acrobat Pro?

I really need to be able to print mixed sized PDF documents in Reader or Acrobat Pro on a Mac.  When I try, the letter sized pages are fine, but only the first legal sized page in the stack prints correctly.  The rest shift down the page leaving a wide margin at the top of the page and then what should be printed at the bottom goes off the page.  I have tried the settings in the Reader print dialogue box "Choose paper source by PDF page size", along with an umber of variations of all the other settings, and I still get the same results.  Can someone please tell me that there is a way to do this?  HELP!!!!

    Hi DSKinCO,
Are you still facing this issue.
If yes, i would suggest if you create a new document using word with mixed page sizes. Try to print after converting that into PDF using either Acrobat or Reader.
Before you print, make sure your Adobe Acrobat/Reader is updated.

  • Adding a Bookmark to a Pages document created from a template

No matter what I select, the "+" button to add a bookmark from the Inspector remains grey and unclickable. When I create a document from scratch, this is not the case. How do I place bookmarks in documents created from a Pages template? I look forward eagerly to y'all's help!

It has to be in that default text area, nothing else is scanned, same applies for T.O.C.
You can copy and paste over your text from one mode to the other.
If you use Layout breaks etc in a WP document you can create a newsletter template.
Personally I avoid Layout mode as it is the poor cousin in both features and programming time spent by Apple.

  • Where can I get a book printed from a Pages document?

Ok, I know of dozens of service bureaus/labs happy to print photo books for people from a series of jpeg image files. Pages does not output jpeg files. I know of one that will do it from a PDF (Blurb, actually), but it must be a PDF/X-3 file, which Pages does not do, either. Where can I get a photo book printed from either a Pages document, or from a Pages-created PDF?
I don't really want to layout my book in InDesign -- Pages is so much easier and faster.

It isn't impossible to use Pages for book printing.
Do search on the matter here in the forum

  • Printing a selection from a document using HP E Print

    Hello all,
Is it possible to print a selection from a document using e-Print? I currently can emailt he entire document to my printer however that is it.

    Hi dayanks101,
Thank you for being a member of the HP Support Community. I see that you would like to learn how to choose which pages print from a multi-page document.
Since you have the document in an email already it’s fairly easy to choose which pages you would like to print if you are using the HP ePrint app. I’m presuming that you have already download the HP ePrint mobile app to your iPad and added your email account to the app.
Please follow these steps after you have opened the HP ePrint app
Choose the email with the document you need to print.
Please choose the document you want to print (for my screen shot the file is titled “scan 2014_05_29 08-55-01.pdf). This will load the document with the available print options.
Please tap on “Page Range”. It will give you the options of ‘Single’ or ‘Multiple’.
If you are choosing to print just one page please choose ‘Single’ and then choose the page you would like to print.
If you are choosing to print a range of pages please choose ‘Multiple’ and then choose the page range you would like to print.
I hope this helps you print just want you need.

  • Warning "Printer marks may overlap artwork..."

The full warning is "Printer marks may overlap artwork. You may need to expand the Crop box using the Crop dialog."
I am getting this warning when adding printer marks to a PDF created from Xpress. No amount of expanding the crop box has helped. If I select "OK" I do get the desired crop marks the problem arises when I try to batch this action. In Batch Process I replicate what I need the outcome though is a page with no marks. Guessing this warning is flushing the rest of the process.
I have quite a number of multi-chapter documents going to a Docutech. Though they don't need crops for finals, they do need them for proofing rounds.
    Any ideas...
    Thanks
    Richard

You will get that "error message" any time you add printers marks onto a page, regardless of how much white space you've added around it using the crop pages dialogue. As for batching the action, I don't know why it wouldn't work, as the files I've done this to, albeit significantly smaller, have worked.

  • Opening a Pages document in Pages format results in a zip file

Trying to print a Pages document from my iPad to a non-Airprint printer.  Want use HP's ePrint app.   Bring up "open in another app" -- and then I am asked to chose a format.  Chose Pages.  Then asked for an app.  Chose ePrint.  ePrint locates my non-Airprint printer, but cannot print.  Reason: the Pages document has tuned into a zip file (xxxxxx.pages.zip).   Why??   If I chose Word format, the Pages document becomes a docx file, and it CAN be printed by ePrint.  I do not understand what is happening here.  I also get a zip file if I try to use Dropbox.

Well, to your curiosity once more, read that link I sent you again - this part in particular:
While the Finder did not treat this file as a package (that is, no Show Package Contents command showed up in the document’s contextual menu), it was indeed a package. To pry it open, you could use a utility such as Pacifist. Inside, you’d find several items, most notably an index.xml file which contained the primary content you created.

  • Removing printer marks

how do you remove printer marks from your PDF
    document?

    ChrisMercianLabels wrote:
In case it helps find the solution, the issue can be re-created by:
    1) Create a new Illustrator document with 1 artboard (number not important) and add some random shapes to it.
    2) Save the document as a PDF and under the Marks and Bleeds section tick the "All Printer's Marks".
    3) Create a new Illustrator document (again the number of artboards is not important).
    4) Place your previously created PDF in step 2 into your new document.
    5) Embed the PDF.
Okay, all is normal up to this point.
    6) By either using the Direct Selection Tool and clicking down into the grouped image, delete the printer marks so you are just left with the random shapes created in step 1.
This is where the discrepancy must creep in. The placed PDF with printer's marks comes in as a "clipping group" contained in a rectangle the size of its original artboard + printer's marks. It's possible the printer's marks themselves bring along some nested clipping paths too. How certain are you that you are deleting everything but the "random shapes created in step 1"? If you are not releasing the clipping path(s) and/or un-grouping anything, it's very possible you're leaving frames which have no stroke and no fill.
    7) Now try centring the artwork to the artboard and depending on which alignment option you choose the artwork will shift to the right or down.
Do you work with "edges" or "bounding box" visible? When you select the artwork to align, does the bounding box tightly surround the objects, or is it still the size of the original placed PDF?

  • Combining Numbers documents with Pages documents

Is there a way to combine a document from each program to create, for example, a cover letter that includes a worksheet?
I've written a 2-page business letter in Pages and I have a 2-page worksheet document in Numbers that I would like to combine and send to someone as a single document. Ultimately, I will export to PDF because they very likely don't have iWork to view it, but I would like to avoid having to use Acrobat Pro to combine 2 PDF's into one.
Dragging a Numbers sheet into the Pages page list doesn't work. Adding a table to a Pages document doesn't allow me to preserve the formatting and calculations that are in the Numbers document.
    Any advice would be welcome.

Not that I know of - it would be nice, eh? Your idea of dragging data from one to the other was a good start but perhaps you did it in the wrong direction. I know Numbers lacks paragraph styles but what happens if you copy the text you wrote in Pages and then paste it into a Text box in Numbers?
