[solved] adduser --disabled-login

I am still new to Arch, and I am trying to run a server on Arch. I am trying to create my serv user. What is the command for this?
This worked on Ubuntu Server(Debian), but not on Arch.
Arch:
[jesse@Chronos]# su
Password:
[root@Chronos]# adduser --disabled-login serv
bash: adduser: command not found

One way to do this, and I don't know if this is the preferred way, is to set the shell to nologin. So the useradd command would look like:
useradd -s /usr/bin/nologin username
Checkout the manpage for nologin for more details.

  • How to disable login mail checking?

I would like to disable the mail checking on each login: I am not interested in seeing "No new mail" or else each time I login in a console. In other distributions, there was a specific setting in /etc/login.defs:
    MAIL_CHECK_ENAB = no
I do not find this option in the arch /etc/login.defs, nor it is mentioned in man login or man login.defs; trying to set it anyway results in login complianing about badformed configuration file.
I also tried to comment out both MAIL_DIR and QMAIL_DIR, but without success.
Is there an other method to get this result? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have finally solved this issue, after only 4 months (it was my first issue using archlinux). Since the most part of shadow functionality is managed by pam, /etc/login.defs is not used at all. I had to edit /etc/pam.d/login. I had to comment out this line in that file:
    # session optional pam_mail.so dir=/var/spool/mail standard
I am very satisfied, I hated those unuseful "No new mail"

  • SOLVED - Unable to login into xfce after upgrade

I upgraded my Arch computer. When rebooting I get SLIM and can enter my login/password but can go any further as it loops back to SLIM. I've read another post on consolekit & HAL.
I have consolekit 0.4.1-2 and HAL 0.5.14-1. SLIM gets started via /etc/inittab
    id:5:initdefault:
    x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null
    And my .xinitrc looks like:
    #!bin/sh
    exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
It has been working for months this way. Too bad to be stuck today.
Any hint on how I can debug this issue?
    Thanks

I killed SLIM and tried to launch 'startx'. I don't know how to copy/paste from the command line but what I see is :

  • Disable login as sysdba without password

    Hi,
we are hosting our environment externally with a hosting company and wanted to know if there was anyway of disabling (from within the database) login "/ as sysdba" without having to provide a password.
The scenario we are trying to avoid is a malicious OS administrator putting themselves into the dba/ora_dba group and then setting the sqlnet.ora parameter SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS) and then being able to login to the database without out having to provide a password and being able to view very sensitive data??
    any help much appreciated.

It sounds like you have a managed hosting company. You need to discuss with the hosting company what types of access they need in order to perform their management functions and limit the admins at the hosting company to an account that does not allow them to add them selves to the dba/ora_dba group or perform any other functions that you do not wish them to perform.

  • How do I disable login password?

I am having heaps of trouble with an annoying login password that I cannot disable.  I have followed all directions and still it persists.  what do I do now any one know?

There is a Log in password for a reason. So anyone turning on your computer can't use it or look at your files without knowing the password. To disable the use of it means that everyone walking by you Mac can start it up and view your personal data and files.
So what is the be problem typing in a password when the system starts? You will still need to type it in when you are installing software or making system changes.
    Good Luck & Best Wishes.

  • GDM disable login on shutdown

    Hey guys,
On shutting down the system (from gnome3 - but im pretty sure it wont matter what DE is being used), the gdm login screen appears.
However before it shuts down there is still time to click login and enter a password,
Is there anyway to disable this, e.g. greying it out, or putting a 'shutting down' prompt there instead?
Or would it be a case of submitting a feature request to gnome devs?
(Also after gdm finally closes, there terminal login prompt then appears for about 10 seconds before the screen finally goes blank. Is there anyway to replace this with the shutdown script text instead?)
    Cheers

  • After update -50 error solved by disabling shapeshifter

    hello all
i just recently had a problem on my new intel imac...
when i updated ituned from 7.0.1 to 7.1.1 every time i tried to launch it it would give me a -50 error message and not open...
after much research and experimentation i finally figured out that this is cause (by some unknown reason) by shapeshifter...
i also figured out that this problem only occurred when itunes was located on the hard drive...
anyway, after disabling shapeshifter (or excluding itunes from the shapeshifter list) solves the problem and i can now run itunes no problem...
thanks and catch you all on the flip side...
    sid kid...

    i mistakenly said
when itunes is located on the hard drive
what i meant to say is when itunes is located in the applications folder...
anywhere else on the hard drive it seemed to work fine...even in my home folder...
    sorry for the confusion...

  • Disable login for embedded purpose

    Hi all,
I need some hints about an argument. I need to disable the login on my archlinux. I guess there is a specific service that I need to disable. Can someone tell what it is ?
After that I've disabled is there a way to enable ?
    Thanks for any reply.
    Kind regards
P.s. It's ok for me also to hide the password prompt after the boot ( text mode ).

Can you clarify your end goal?  Part of your post sounds almost like you want an autologin (hide the password prompt).  But if you want to disable logging in, what routes of login do you want to prevent, local tty, ssh, others?  If you disable every form of loging in, then how would you ever re-enable anything (I suppose only by booting a live medium and modifying the system from there).
What is the "embedded purpose" referred to in the title.
Ok, let me explain better. I've a PC that runs  a graphical service. I would like to hide the boot process away, so the custmer will see only a black screen before that my service starts. I no need to make a login ( anyways I can use grub and start a root shell at the boot ).

  • How do I disable login on ios7 on my iPad3 ?

After installing IOS 7 on my iPad 3, I am greeted by a login screen every time I power up the iPad.
How do I disable this screen ?
I do know my Id and password, but I don't need the security of answering over and over?

From what I understand this is a new thing in case the iPad is stolen , the thief can't get into the phone after powering it off, which they do to prevent find my iPhone. It requires the Apple ID and password. Not to be confused with a passcode.

  • Trying to disable login passwords.

I know most people want to have as secure a computer as possible. However, in my case, it would be beneficial to allow user switching without having to input a password (it's a long story). I have fast user switching set up and don't at all mind the login screen. But is there anyway to disable the need for these passwords? Granted, I wish to maintain the administrator password so I am the only one who can change system preferences and such. Any suggestions?
    Thank you.

I don't think there is a way to disable passwords. If there was, that would be a good way for a hacker to compromise a Mac.
If you really want to make passwords irrelevant for non-admin users (you can do it for admin users too but it would not be a good idea), why don't you just use a password (on all those accounts) that everyone can remember, like 1234.

  • Disable login screen

    hello
i made some forms using oracle 9iDS,
when runing these forms use OC4J with DS i get a login screen asking for username password & onnect string for the main form only,
when ideployed the application on an application server 9i, i get the built in login screen in the main form and also when i click any menu item to any other form ..
so i want to keep the built login screen for the main application form and disable it for all the others, please help how to do that..

    Hi..
    Try this
On your main form create a trigger
    Trigger Name = "On-Logon"
    Trigger Level = "Form"
    Trigger Code = "LogOn(<Username>,<Password>||'@'||<Connecting Strint>);"
    eg: LogOn('SCOTT','TIGER'||'@'||'ORCL');
