[SOLVED] 'AGP is deactivated' - Wine, Gaming on Arch

Hello,
First off I would like to mention that I understand this may not be the proper forums to mention this, as it could just be wine related and should go to the wine forums, but then again everyone here has been so helpful and knowledge-full that I believe this issue might get resolved here as well.
I am trying to run Lineage2 under wine on Arch (x86_64), but when I launch the game I get the error:
"The game may not be consistant because AGP is deactivated. Please activate AGP for consistancy."
I have installed d3dx9 & d3dx10 using winetricks, I do have proper VGA drivers, and I am running on the following:
Linux 3.3.8-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT x86_64 GNU/Linux
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920  @ 2.67GHz
NVIDIA Corporation GF106 [GeForce GTS 450]
Let me know if you require any additional information.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the fast reply. I just did a pacman -Syu yesterday, so I don't think much would change. However, after a reboot I noticed that whilst the message still appeared, the graphics weren't slow as they were before, so now it's just a message with no effect.
Perhaps this should be closed as the issue itself has been resolved, however I still do not understand the nature of the message.

  • Dual booting win 7 and arch: cannot install grub to partition

    I have read the arch wiki page on dual booting and several other sources on line, but I am still struggling to get this to work.
    I am trying to dual boot arch and windows 7 on my lenovo ideapad s205. the machine comes with windows 7 pre-installed.
    I shrank the win 7 partition and added an extended partition with 3 logical partions for /boot, swap, and /.
    I am able to install and run arch by installing grub to the mbr. when I do this, though, I cannot boot windows. (the windows section of grub menu.lst is uncommented and points toward hda0,0. I have tried hda 0,1 as well).
    I have also tried to use the windows boot loader to load arch, as described in the arch wiki page on dual booting. The problem here is that, taking this approach, I should install grub to my /boot partition, but when I try to do this, the installer only allows me to install grub to sda or sdb (the usb stick).
    I have read that grub should be able to boot linux from a logical partition. Is this so?
    Is there something wrong with the arch installer that it is not giving me the option of installing to a partition rather than the mbr, or is this  a problem with my partition scheme, or something else?
    I am tempted to remove lenovo's recovery system, but on the other hand, I have already needed to use it several times while monkeying around with installing arch.
    Thanks for any help.
    UPDATE:
    I now have the laptop dual-booting win 7 and arch. My solution ( adapted from here: http://helms-deep.cable.nu/~rwh/blog/?p=177) was to:
    1. installed arch on the partitions I had created for it, but skipped the "install bootloader" stage.
    2. in win 7, I downloaded and installed EasyBCD and made an entry for arch in it. I checked the option to "Use EasyBCD's copy of GRUB"
    3. When I restarted, I got a grub error because the entry in grub's menu.lst was pointing at the wrong partitions for the kernel and root.
    4. So I went back into the arch live disk, mounted the boot partition and edited menu.lst.
    Now when I start the laptop, the windows boot loader starts and I can choose between win  7 and arch. when I select arch, grub4dos starts and gives me the option to start arch. this is not particularly elegant (nor is it fast), so I think this solution is less than ideal, but it does work.
    I'd be interestd in any thoughts about what went wrong and what a better solution would be.
    thanks.

    Is this a typo in your post or how it was in menu.lst? Surely it should be hd0,0 and not hda0,0? The entry I have in my menu.lst is as follows:
    # (2) Windows
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive

  • [SOLVED] Warcraft 3 (with Wine) does not work in Arch

    Okay. I played a lot Warcraft III The Frozen Throne with Wine in Ubuntu. When I started to use Arch, of course I wanted to continue playing.
    But, when I started the game for the first time it gets into main screen (with 800x600 resolution, it is default when you start the game for the first time, my xorg.conf supports it) but freezes after about 2 secs. And I have to kill X. But now it even does not start (it changes resolution from 1920x1200 to 800x600, but does not continue)! I'm using KDE4.1 - is this somehow related to nVidia driver bug (I'm using nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra)?
    Arch 64bit KDE4.1
    Wine 1.1.3 (installed with this, but also tested this - same problem)
    WC3 patched 1.22 - installed MS Visual C 2005 Runtimes in order to get it work (see http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p … n&iId=3126 )
    I'm running the game from NTFS partition.
    Edit: Tested with emulated desktop. Problem remains.
    Edit2: Solved problem with 32bit Arch. Works like a charm!

  • [SOLVED] Installed Win 7, now Arch won't boot

    Edit: To save anyone reading this all the way, the problem turned out to be a badly edited fstab. Sigh.
    PROBLEM:
    Grub loads, then loads the kernel, but the boot hangs a few seconds later with no real error messages.
    BACKGROUND:
    1) I needed to boot a native Windows 7 partition on my 128GB laptop SSD.
    2) So, I used gparted in an Ubuntu Live USB to resize my existing Arch partition and create an NTFS partition for Win 7:
    sda > sda1=Arch > sda2=ntfs > sda3=linux swap
    Arch still booted fine after this (sda1).
    3) I then installed windows 7 (BIOS install) onto the second partition (sda2). I don't know where or if it puts some system reserved partition - but I can't see anything in gparted.
    4) chrooted from an Arch Live USB, reinstalled GRUB, including mkconfig step
    5) *If* I recall, Arch then booted OK.
    6)  Booted into Windows and applied all updates, set windows to use UTC clock and updated my laptops BIOS. Reboot.
    7) Win 7 boots fine from the grub menu from (hd0,2)
    8) Arch starts booting, loads the kernel, then hangs after the kernel has loaded, but before gdm appears. With the following on screen:
    [2.104597] INFO @wl_cfg80211_attach : Registered CFG80211 phy
    I have tried chrooting and reinstalling linux and linux-headers and grub. But so far to no avail.
    [SOLVED with face palm]
    I installed syslinux using chroot, as it displays more startup messages. The boot was hanging at [a disk task is starting] or words to that effect. It was my USB stick, which I'd foolishly added to fstab with the "auto" option. Editing that out of fstab - and it's all good.
    I'll leave this here in case anyone else does something this dumb.

    Is LVM handled automatically by systemd? The reason I ask is because I have the USELVM= set to YES in rc.conf.
    I made the permanent transition to systemd and did not start alsa at all - sound works fine - so I never bothered with the alsa-store/alsa-restore service files at all - it just works! Also dbus gets handled by default in systemd so you don't need any starting of dbus service at all... it just works.

  • [solved] Can't set up dual boot Arch + Win 7 on separated disks

    Hello everybody,
    I'm new to this amazing project as I installed Arch just two days ago (and everything works like a charm in linux).
    Anyway I have a problem and I'm very sorry to bother you with another question such this, but I tried everything and I accurately read the wiki.
    The problem is that I can't manage to create a dual boot in grub with Arch on the first sata disk and Windows 7 on the second disk.
    Before trying Arch I used ubuntu 10.10 dual boot with the same Windows 7 on the same secondary disk (the pc is a dell XPS L702X 17' laptop with, of course, dual disk bay) using GRUB2 which was automatically installed during ubuntu installation.
    I tried to chainload windows disk in grub using map command to let windows think it's on the primary disk and not on second one.
    At start I just had "BOOTMGR missing" error, then I put windows disk as primary removing arch disk and I repaired its bootloader: windows could boot then.
    When I substituted disks and tried to boot, Windows 7 loading screen appeared and immediately I had a blue screen of death (or something similar) which anyway disappeared in less than a second (I was not able to read anything from that screen)
    Now, when I try to boot windows either with grub or trying to enable boot straight from second hard drive in BIOS, I receive an error stating that it is necessary to use the windows repair disk to fix problems.
    My question is: how can I finally fix this situation?
    It would be quite important, for me, to not format neither of the disks, and I could even accept to renounce booting windows from grub as it would be ok even changing BIOS priority every time I need to use windows 7.
    I really apologize for my annoying question but I really tried everything I could find without success; sorry for my poor english, too.
    Anyway, this distribution seems just amazing to me! Thanks for your time.
    Luca

    It worked!!! Actually I don't know what changed, I proceeded removing the first disk (arch) WITHOUT, this time, changing the position of the windows disk. I used windows 7 DVD to repair the second disk. It tooks several attempts since it failed without specifying the problem. Eventually, I was able to boot windows 7, everything worked. Then, I plugged the primary linux hard drive and booted into arch, where I used "grub-install /dev/sda" as root. It executed without errors, but when I checked menu.lst file, surprisingly I discovered that it was not changed at all by grub-install.
    Anyway it must have detected windows on /dev/sdb, since I am now able to boot both arch and windows without problems.
    It was a weird situation, but anyway it worked well!! Thank you for the support, I really appreciate!

  • Win 7 and Arch dual boot [SOLVED]

    There are other help threads about this, but I didn't want to hijack somebody's elses thread.  Sorry for the long post, I just want to provide as much detail as possible:
    I am trying to use Grub (not Grub2) to dual boot between Arch Linux and Windows 7.  I had this working before using Windows XP, but when I reinstalled Windows 7 over Windows XP, Grub would no longer boot Windows.
    1.  If I manually choose the hd containing Windows 7 to load first in my BIOS, Windows 7 boots no problem.  If I manually choose the hd with Grub and Arch to load first in my BIOS, I get a Grub menu, which boots Arch, but not Windows 7.  Ideally, I think, I would like to have the internal drive with Arch ranked first, then the internal drive with Windows second in my BIOS. At least, that's how I had been doing things before blowing away XP and installing Windows 7.
    2.  Here is the (abbreviated) output of sudo fdisk -l
       Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
    /dev/sdb1   *        2048      206847      102400    7  HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sdb2          206848   169934847    84864000    7  HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sdb3       169935570  1953520064   891792247+  83  Linux
       Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
    /dev/sda1   *          63     1028159      514048+  83  Linux
    /dev/sda2         1028160     3084479     1028160   82  Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda3         3084480    44050229    20482875   83  Linux
    /dev/sda4        44050230   488392064   222170917+  83  Linux
    3.  From that, I can tell that Arch is installed on sda:  sda1 = boot partition; sda2 = swap; sda3 = root partition; sda4 = home partition.
    Windows 7 is installed on sdb:  sdb1 = system reserved partition (created automatically by Windows 7 during install); sdb2 = Windows; sdb3 = separate ext3 partition
    4. I am comfortable editing Grub menus.  This is an excerpt of mine:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/blah-blah-blah ro
    initrd /kernel26.img
    # (2) Windows
    title Windows 7
    rootnoverify (hd1,0)
    savedefault
    makeactive
    map (hd1) (hd0)
    map (hd0) (hd1)
    chainloader +1
    5.  The error I get is "error 15: file not found"  If I change the line reading "rootnoverify" to "root", I get the same error plus the bit about "filesystem unknown, partition type 0x7" so I think I'm pointing at the right partition/drive.  That is, I know that partition type 0x7 is an NTFS filesystem/Windows.
    6.  I messed around with the Grub entry for Windows.  I modified the root line to read "rootnoverify (hd1,1)", but things still did not work.  I wasn't sure if I needed to bypass the "system reserved" partition created by Windows, or not.  I also flip-flopped the two map lines, so they read:
                        map (hd0) (hd1)
                        map (hd1) (hd0)
    That did not work either.  I tried these combinations together, but Windows still would not boot.  Always the same error message: "filesystem unknown, partition type 0x7"
    7.  I think I have a mapping problem given that Arch boots fine and Windows boots fine from the BIOS.  However, I'm not sure how to fix this.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Culley
    Edit:
    Okay, so I fixed things.  I just removed a bunch of stuff from my Grub entry.  Even though Windows is not on the same drive as Grub, it does not need the map sections like I thought.  I also removed the savedefault and makeactive entries, not sure if that made a difference or not. My new grub entry looks like this
    # (2) Windows
    title Windows 7
    rootnoverify (hd1,0)
    chainloader +1

  • General questions concerning gaming in (arch)linux

    Hi,
    I've searched the forums, and I found a lot of howto's that sometimes worked, and sometimes didn't. I'm not a gamer, but have been a longtime linux-user.
    I have talked a lot of people into using linux, and almost all of them are happy with there new OS, but my brother (my latest convert) is a gamer 'pure sang'. He's not to happy with the switch to Ubuntu:
    * Enemy Territory works, but punkbuster keeps kicking him off the servers
    * WoW: he was used to getting rocksolid 80+ FPS in windows, now he gets 50FPS with drops to below 20FPS
    * Mumble: giving problems
    Yesterday I have found a link to a solution for punkbuster - maybe I can solve that one myself. Is it normal that you have a significant amount lower FPS in linux than in windows? I thought the nvidia-blob was about 'on par' with the windows-driver? I have set WoW to OpenGL and applied several tweaks that I have found around the interwebs...
    Should I give archlinux for him a try (I only chose Ubuntu to make it easier for him to update)? Since punkbuster is 32bit-only, should I install 32bit linux for him? Or should I advise him to buy a 'windows 7'-licence key?
    PS: Is the Archlinux gaming repo still alive? It looks as if no updates have made since early 2010 and only 1 of the 3 mirrors mentioned in the wiki is still up...
    THX!

    I am a pretty much a gamer, less so in recent years but...  I have found that Linux does not offer the same gaming possibilities as Windows.  To this day, I am still dual-booting because of gaming, and I doubt that will change in the near future.  I have ran things like Half-life2 and Stracraft 2 in Linux with statisfying results, but with generally fewer frame rates than Windows.  As for gaming performance, recent test ran by Phoronix suggest that BSD is faster than Linux, but that's not your question.  For myself, I doubt you would find a distro with a significant performance boost for gaming, as they all share the same drivers and all share Xorg to produce graphics.  The only reserve is that other test ran by Phoronix suggest that "compositing" as used in Ubuntu's Unity or Gnome 3 has some negative effect on 3D gaming performance, so if you switch to Arch, you might want to consider the "less cute" desktops, like XFCE or LXDE and the like, without compositing.  Also, I should mention that using 64 bit Linux to run 32 bit windows games tends to make things a little more difficult.  If gaming under Linux with Wine is a must, consider staying under a 32 bit version of the distro of your choice.
    As for Windows games, you might want to look at Crossover ( http://www.codeweavers.com/ ) which offers an interface to Wine and better support.  There is a "gaming edition" of crossover which might help.  Check their DB to see which games are supported, but there's a full-featured demo mode anyway, so try before you buy.  Also, you might try playonlinux ( http://www.playonlinux.com/ ) wich offers an interfaces that manages Wine installations for you with "recepies" in the background that are known to offer the best results.  If you want the "free" option, playonlinux is the way to go if you want the best chances at running your games, if supported.
    Lastly, I would suggest looking at http://www.penguspy.com/ to find Linux native games.  Of course, that might not satisfy your brother if he wants specific games.

  • [SOLVED] No sound in wine (ALSA / dmix)

    Hi!
    Getting no sound in (most likely) everything run trough wine.
    When run, winecfg says (this might be unrelated though?):
    ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:957:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) The dmix plugin supports only playback stream
    err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"wineesd.drv": libesd.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    err:alsa:wine_snd_pcm_recover underrun occurred
    The winecfg Test-Button plays sound though. No matter what sound device is selected (even all deactivated) - every time I press the Button, I get to hear the Test-Sound + another one of these lenes in terminal...:
    err:alsa:wine_snd_pcm_recover underrun occurred
    Running bin32_wine on arch 64, using ALSA, should be configured correctly (dmix sound works everywhere at once, even flash & multiple users). Anyone an idea where to start looking?
    Thanks!

    Thanks, but I'm not using ESD, I guess this was really unrelated.
    Turned out what's also unrelated are the "test sound" button working in winecfg audio tab and if the configuration there is actually really supposed to be working: after deactivating everything except for ALSA and turning off hardware acceleration too, I suddenly had sound from programs running under wine, too.

  • [SOLVED]Wow in bin32-wine-wow-hardware-cursor need help with patching

    Hi all.
    I have installed bin32-wine-wow-hardware-cursor from AUR and it's working pretty fine I must say. I still have one important issue. That is, that the cursor acts strange when holding the button pressed down, as you do when turning etc. The cursor then moves to the middle of the screen and shakes, until you release the button.
    There is a fix for this posted on the Ubuntuforums, but I don't know how to implement this in Arch. Trust me, I have tried in so many ways possible, but I don't have the knowledge to do this. Please help me, or point me in the right direction.
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … tcount=172
    I have managed to fix this problem myself. If any of you are wanting the same functionality as what i mentioned above, navigate to your mouse.c find the function update_mouse_state, and then make the changes below...
    static void update_mouse_state( HWND hwnd, Window window, int x, int y, unsigned int state, POINT *pt )
    struct x11drv_thread_data *data = x11drv_thread_data();
    char *hwgl;
    get_coords( hwnd, window, x, y, pt );
    hwgl = getenv("WINE_CURSOR");
    /* update the cursor */
    if (hwgl == NULL){
    if (data->cursor_window != window)
    data->cursor_window = window;
    wine_tsx11_lock();
    if (data->cursor) XDefineCursor( data->display, window, data->cursor );
    wine_tsx11_unlock();
    Thank you in advance.
    EDIT: To clear things out a bit. I am using 64-bit Arch.

    Thx for the reply.
    However, I don't think that one includes the right patch either. That just looks like the 32-bit version of the bin32-wine-wow-hardware-cursor. And I cannot install that on my system.
    When talking about cursor issues there are 2.
    1. Getting hardware cursor in OpenGL.
    2. Irritating cursor-behavior when pressing down the buttons to turn etc.
    The package you refer to solves problem #1, so does the bin32-wine-wow-hardware-cursor. It's problem #2 that need fixing. I would assume, since it is just a cosmetic defect, no one else has bothered before me.
    But still, it's solvable in Ubuntu, and I am kind of a perfectionist.
    EDIT: Yes, I can see now that the mouse.c is in the archive. I would be able to edit myself. But (silly question) I won't be able to run the PKGBUILD with that source, right?
    Well, you could always edit the file then re-tar/bzip it.
    The PKGBUILD wiki article states:
    Note: If you need to supply files which are not downloadable on the fly, e.g. self-made patches, you simply put those into the same directory where your PKGBUILD file is in and add the filename to this array. Any paths you add here are resolved relative to the directory where the PKGBUILD lies. Before the actual build process is started, all of the files referenced in this array will be downloaded or checked for existence, and makepkg will not proceed if any are missing.
    So basically, edit the PKGBUILD and set the source to the location of the newly bziped file you have after applying the patch. Then it should use that one instead
    But, that won't be possible on a 64-bit system, right? I can't use the 32-bit source.
    Or am I missing some piece of the puzzle here?
    I think I'm missing part of the puzzle....
    Ok, title of thread: "bin32-wine-wow-hardware-cursor"
    That makes me assume 32-bit

  • [SOLVED] Setting up virtualbox & wine and on x86_64

    Hello again
    Ok so this should be my last annoying noob post, I have 64-bit Arch setup correctly with gnome and everything. However, I still have a few questions starting with how do I install virtualbox & wine on x86_64? I tried to install virtualbox with pacman -S virtualbox_bin 3.1.2-1 and that didn't work and I haven't even made an attempt with wine yet. Can I safely install a bin32 version of wine? - The wiki didn't make that very clear.
    Additionally, I have copied a lot of backup data to my home folder that belongs to the user 'root'. Is there a way that I can, via command line make everything in my home belong to my user?

    Both programs can be found in the AUR:

    You can install yaourt first and then use it to install other packages from AUR:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Yaourt
    ok thanks, I am just going to assume that its safe to install wine bin32. In the mean time, if I chown username my home folder will that change the ownership of every sub-directory/file?
    Edit: Found it, thanks anonymous_user.
    chown -hvR user /home/user
    Solved

  • [Solved] Graphics driver (nVidia) problem on fresh Arch setup

    Hi,
    I have installed Arch as main OS about 2 days ago following usual installation wikis. PC is fully functional except for problems with graphics driver (nVidia 340xx) for example just now it took about 3 to 4 boots to get into desktop like 1st boot: did not show sddm, 2nd boot: showed it with colored (white/red/green/blue) pixels, 3rd boot: broken desktop and 4th boot: finally working (see two screen images taken from mobile at the bottom).
    Details are as follows:
    1. Kernel:
    Linux archos 3.18.6-1-ARCH x86_64 GNU/Linux
    2. System info:
    Cinnamon desktop 2.4.6
    AMD Athlon 62 x2 4800+ processor
    RAM 3 GB
    nVidia GT218 (GeForce 210) graphics card
    3. nVidia packages installed:
    From official repos:

    Passing vmalloc=256m and change in xong.conf provided good results. lspci -v shows same output regardless of adding vmalloc to kernel:

    Last question for my understanding if you can answer:
    1. My GeForce 210 card has 1gb memory. Is 256m is coming from system RAM or coming from 1gb GPU's own memory. If case is latter, do you think making it full 1gb will help performance (like gaming ,etc)

    I assume this is due to an update I have made in the past, but since it has been a few updates since last time I used word, I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if so, to which version they had to downgrade to fix this?
    EDIT: I browsed to /var/cache/pacman/pkg to see which wine version I could downgrade to, so I tried version 1.3.29 and now word works again. adding wine to ignorepkg now...

    Thanks for your reply! I don't think, I use dmix, the .asoundrc is some default one (might actually be a pretty old one since I tend to carry my /home partition over to new system installs). I tried to remove it with no luck. pulseaudio-alsa has been already installed with following /etc/asound.conf:
    # Use PulseAudio by default
    pcm.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    hint {
    show on
    description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
    ctl.!default {
    type pulse
    fallback "sysdefault"
    # vim:set ft=alsaconf:
    Since nothing changed after removing .asoundrc, maybe this asound.conf has been used all the time rather than the .asoundrc?
    Concerning the tsched=0 thing, the driver is snd_hda_intel (with snd_hda_codec_realtek), the card is an ALC887-VD. The Alsa page you mentioned states that indeed some cards with snd_intel_hda (seems to be the same as snd_hda_intel) driver have problems with timer-based scheduling, but doesn't specify which ones exactly.
    So now I'm following your last hint and building wine-multimedia. It had lib32-libcl as make dependency which made conflicts with lib32-catalyst-utils, so I now try building wine-multimedia with lib32-libcl removed from the makedepends list, let's see whether it builds, it takes a while.  Will report back as soon as I have any news.

  • Thinkpad t520 dual boot win 7 and arch + optimus issue

    --today I got my first laptop and first thinkpad..... thinkpad t520 with the following specifications:-
    intel i5 2520M - HD+ AG display (1600*900) - 4 gigs of ram - nvidia optimus -Hard disk 500Gigs 7200rpm - windows 7  and some other windows applications unfortunately a friend bought it for me so he bought it with alot of applications
    --the problem is that I've been using arch linux for a year now, and I love it, no experience with laptops, and I intend to keep windows because I purchased for it and I want dual boot with arch so what is the right disk partitioning to install linux and keep windows untouched............ in my old desktop it was only arch and it was like that:
    128 mb ext2 boot
    2048 swap
    50000 mb / ext4   and the rest of the disk for home folder, now with dual boot what is the right partitoning?
    the second question Does bumblebee work fine with archlinux?
    how to access bios?
    Is there any thread to help to install arch on thinkpad t520 in details ?
    Do I leave the battery always installed or what?

    the Arch partition should take some space from the windows7_os partition. You should keep the Lenovo_Recovery partition if you don't have a Windows installation DVD, or if you think you may want to reset your hard drive to its original state someday. In my laptop I have completely removed it.
    I have a dual boot of Archlinux/Windows7, and I use the following partitioning
    /dev/sda1   ntfs   60.0GiB   /media/C (for windows os)
    /dev/sda2 (extended partition)
          /dev/sda3   swap   4.0GiB swap
          /dev/sda4   ext4    30.0GiB root
          /dev/sda5   ext4    30.0GiB home
    /dev/sda6   ntfs   376GiB   /media/D
    I use the last partition as a shared partition between Arch and Windows, for storing music and videos... I use it also for installing games, so that I  can play them either from windows or from Arch by using wine.
    I'm not saying this is the best way to do it, but this has been working for me, also I don't use a separate /boot partition, I used to have it when I had multiple Linux distros, but with Arch alone I don't find it necessary.

  • [SOLVED] Sluggish database update times since new Arch install

    Hi guys, this time I write to ask something about pacman that i find unusual.
    Happens that I decided to reinstall my Arch like 2 months ago, and since then pacman takes a real longer time that it used to just to sync the databases, to be more accurate this sluggishness presents not when the progress bar is downloading the new DB, but between DB downloads (e.g. it takes about minute from the time it finishes downloading the core DB to when it starts to download the extra DB.)...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for the support.

    Try using rankmirrors to set up a good number of the fastest mirrors for your location, for me this changes everything!
    I live in europe so I first delete every other mirror in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, then I enable all leftover mirrors and run:
    rankmirrors -n10 /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist #-n10 to only output the 10 best, change this number to your likings
    for several times and replace the resulting 'overall top-listed mirrors' list in /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    Hope this does the trick for you too!
    ps. You need python to use rankmirrors, I recommend you read the rankmirror man-page for further options
    Well, it seems to me that this solved the problem. I had uncommented some lines at Czech Republic but live in Mexico, so that was lagging the pacman operations a lot. But now its fast as usual.
