I just got a microphone and turned it on (discovered I had to unmute it in 'alsamixer -V capture') and it works just fine but sound is passing through to the speakers. I tried muting everything I wasn't using in alsamixer. Here's the output of 'alsamixer -V all':

Ok, got it really sorted. Don't know why it's like this by default though. Had to mute the front mic (the one I'm using) and enable capture. Done. Phew, somewhat odd.

What model iPod and iOS works and which does not?
Sometimes a 4G iPod will not fully sead in the dock because its case configuration is different that previous models.
Also, sometimes an iOS update breaks compatibility.
Have you checked the dock manufactuer's support stie for compatibility?
Sometimes this works:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

Some qt only plays through speakers, not soundcard

Has anyone had this where about 30% of the time qt is only heard through the speakers, even though all the settings are for the soundcard only?

I don't know if I can word this differently.
I do allot of music and sometimes on the net, there are sound clips. Sometimes these clips will play through the soundcard, sometimes not..I have changed the sample rate and that works sometimes....but it's not a solve-all.
Also, lately, if the soundcard is off, I can't play though the apple built-in sound device......
is there something I am doing wrong?

Sound playing through speakers and Headphones at the same time...

Hi everyone, I have a Toshiba Satellite A215 S5849. It is only about 6 months old. Now whenever I plug my headphones into the headphone jack, sound keeps playing through the speakers and in the headphones at the same time. Also the speakers do always have a crackling sound like they are blown. I have been trying to fix it for awhile now but no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

How to get audio to play through speakers

I have a Vizeo TV smart monitor, an Apple TV (of course), and a DVD/Receiver. A nice set of speakers are hooked up to the DVD player.
I introduced the Apple TV to this family recently. The Apple radio stations played through the speaker in the Vizeo TV and was not so good. Then I bought a optical video cable and used it to connect Apple TV to the DVD receiver. That worked brilliantly for a while and the blues songs from the blues station on Apple TV was coming through in full stereo through the speakers.
This worked for a while but more recently when I turned the system on again to listen to the same station, the sound was coming through the tv monitor's single speaker, not my mildly expensive nice ones. Does anyone know what's going on? btw Apple TV is connected to the tv monitor on HDMI3 and I have tuned the monitor to HDMI3 so that should be consistent.

guess it's a choice from apple maybe it required a software update as airplay was "invented" long after the last atv1g os update and rolling out an os update for a discontinued product as the
first appletv was osX and intel x86 based
and it's replacement atv2 is ios and Arm based

Can I override the headphone jack to play through speakers?

Macbook pro 15" early 2011, running mavericks 10.9.5
Some cabling broke off in the headphone jack and I can't play sound through my speakers since it's still identifying headphones. I read that this is a mechanical switch and can't be fixed by software, but that was like a year ago.
Is this still the case?

IPhone 4 won't play through speakers

Recently, wheneven I dock my iPhone 4 into a docking station, it will not play through the speakers. It will charge. I had this checked by the Apple Store and they said that all the settings are correct and there is no damage to the pins. I have tried docking in a Fidelio and and Sony docking station. No sound comes out through the speakers but, again, the iPhone is charging. Can anybody help with this? The Apple person suggested it maybe something to do with the Bluetooth but I've turned that off and on, and it doesn't make a difference. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

Hold home+ sleep button down ,ignore slide to off until the Apple logo appears then release
Generally if you get no replies it will be because now one has a clue with the info you have provided

Hi , Just recently bought a iPhone 3G , However when i plug in the headphones ( the ones included in the box ) , The music from the ipod still plays through the speakers , I am unable to find any setting related to this either so i am unsure what to do.

Stereo effect is disabled while playing through speakers in lenovo A3300

I thought tha after upgrading my lenovo A3300 to 4.4.2 .. i Will experience more features of this Tab.
But after Upgrading it I found that they have disabled the stereo surround sound while playing through the inbuilt speaker.
In the earlier version of anroid(4.2.2), I can experience the sound quality. Amazing stereo surrond sound was comming out through this ..

I'm having the same issue. I have the quad speaker set, with an Audigy soundcard, and everything was working fine until I downloaded Microsoft's Service Pack 3. As soon as that happened, my front speakers went soft, yet the rear speakers are working well. I downloaded the latest drivers, and tried to restore my computer to an earlier point, but nothing has changed. Does anyone have a solution?

Volume switch off but IPOD plays through speakers

I was at a conference today and turned my iphone off so it would not ring. After about 5 hours I started messing with my phone (I know I shouldn't have but...) Anyways, all sounds are muted except IPOD functions. Songs and movies play through the speaker even when the mute swithch is activated. Anyone else have this? Is it in need of a fix or am I missing another place to mute the phone?

Page 37 of the iPhone User Guide describes the switch as a ring/silence switch.
Page 96 states that when set to silent, the phone will not play any ring, alert or effects sounds. It does play alarms set by the clock.
Go to Settings - Sounds on your iPhone to see what is controlled by the ring/silent switch. Don't fool with anything else while "in conference".

[SOLVED] Hearing the Mic through speakers/headphones

So after a long hiatus to Linux Mint, I've finally come back to Arch. Gotta say that I'm really impressed with how things have progressed here.
I'm encountering a really annoying bug in an otherwise trouble-free installation of Arch. I can hear my own voice through my speakers and headphones when I speak into my mic.
ADDED: I can always hear myself through the mic, not just with skype or audacity or whatever.
Let me describe my setup - it's pretty standard.
I have two speakers hooked up to my motherboard's onboard audio at the back, and a front mic and headphone jack that I use to plug in my headphone-mic headset.
I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware fault because I came from Linux Mint 8 and the audio/mic was fine there.

In alsamixer, I muted the front mic in 'Playback' and for some reason, the digital control in the 'Capture' controls the mic volume. I can confirm that this set up also works in Skype. I don't understand why the 'digital' control affects the mic volume - it's an analogue device.

[Solved] ALSA Wont Play If More Than One Device Has Access To It

This just started happening about two weeks ago and its really annoying. It seems that whenever one program has previously used the sound system no other applications can use the sound system until that initial program is closed. For example, lets say I watched a video on youtube an hour ago and the video is done playing but I still have the page open, amarok (v1.4) or a video player (smplayer/kaffeine/etc...) complains either that xine is in use of it cant find drivers for it or something of that sort. It gets even weirder:I was watching a video on the internet about 2 hours ago and wanted to watch a movie so I closed firefox knowing it would cause this problem and clicked 'save session and quit', I reopened firefox with the same session but I closed the webpage with the video on it, so I go to watch a tv off of my hdd but I dont have any sound since this video apparently still has a lease on the sound system.

My iPhone 5 lost the ability to play through speakers.

Speakerphone, ringtones gone. I am able to use phone, sounds fine through headset. It was working fine last week.

The error was caused by a problem with one of my firewire 800 drives. I tracked it down by trashing STP's preferences and restarting without any peripherals (drives, etc.) plugged in, opening STP (which played correctly), then one by one plugging in the drives until STP started having that issue again.
In Disk Utility I did "verify Disk" and then "Repair Disk" after it found some errors on the suspect disk. That seems to have cleared things up.

Ipod touch wont play through speakers anymore

My Ipod touch played and charged fine on my Philips docking station until this week - now they won'tdo either but other ipods work fine so it's not the speakers. Any ideas?

- Make sure the iPod is fully seated in the dock. If you have a 4G those are harder to seat.
- Look at the dock connector for abnormalities. Compare with the working iPods.
- Yu can try the folwing to rule out a software problem:
- Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

[SOLVED] ALSA - Microphone Not Working

My mic on my computer has worked up until today, when I tried to install PulseAudio, to try it..
Then, I didn't like PulseAudio, so I took it back off...
and now my mic doesn't work..
I'm not too sure what info you need to trouble-shoot this..
So I can give any code that you need, just need my mic working. Lol

ALSA is installed, reinstalled even. Dunno what more I should have to do.
