[SOLVED] Aluminium 24" iMac sound?

I believe that the Alsa bug has been fixed by version 1.0.16.
There was a patch made by a Ubuntu user, details here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=572081&page=4
though I really don't believe that it is necessary anymore.
I'm hoping that some knowledgeable person may hold my hand through this one, or point me to the relevant information?
Thanks in advance.

Thank you Aperculum for your reply & kind offer. :-)
I am using Gnome, the volume control is present but has the muted red cross beside it, changing the volume has no effect.
Alsamixer has Card: HDA Intel & Chip: Realtek ALC885, which I believe is correct.  There is no Master Volume  or Master M, control in Alsamixer, there are only actually 8 controls Alsamixer & the PCM is stuck at 100% & won't move! lol
lspci -nn, shows:
Audio device [0403]: Intel Corp' 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 03)
Which is correct I believe.
If I can give you anymore information please instruct me & I will happily supply it for you.

    Hello,
My iMac sounds like a plane taking off!  I will have to confirm what version of OS I am running but does anyone else have this issue?  Is it the fan or is it a hardware issue?  It has become a little slower over the last couple of months and it's only 8 months old!

    Hi,
I successfully solved problem with no sound at all (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=31960), but still have no sound in my headphones. When I plug them in, laptop speakers get muted, but headphones play no sound. I'm using KMix to control volume.

    Hi,
what you mean by that "sense" word? Or what it means... Theres that yellow led above... It's turned on, I double checked all of that. Plugging headphones in just mutes speakers. Whats going on? I need to use skype and without headphones its bit annoying... Could it be something with snd_hda_intel module's model option?
If only certain aspects of your hardware work, e.g. the headphones but not line out, then you can try passing the model argument:
    modprobe snd_hda_intel model=asus
I've got exactly the opposite .

  • Imac Sound not working

Our iMac sound has just failed. Won't work on youtube, etc.  On reboot, sound works.  Then fails again later.  Recently software updated to latest. i3- 3.06mhz.
    Thanks!

Try these two resets.  The SMC will be most effective:
    SMC RESET:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    PRAM Reset:
1- Ensure the machine is powered off.
2- Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
3- Press the ‘power on’ button.
4- Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
5- Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally

  • Imac sound stopped working

My imac sound has stopped working after plugging in and removing headphones.  Sound works fine with headphones but light still on in headphone jack even whern headphones removed.
This happened once before and I jiggled the head phone jack and it worked. Not working this time
    Help

If the micro switch inside the headphone jack is stuck for good this time, then their may not be much that you can do except take it in for repair.
I might try working it with some different 3.5mm jacks, in hopes of unsticking it and then use a USB Griffin iMic or similar device from now on.

  • [SOLVED]New Build, no sound, Alsa unable to open slave

I've been happily using Arch on an old laptop I had lying around for 4/5  months, alongside ARM on my Raspberry Pi for a year or so. Being more than happy with it I decided to sell my 2011 i5 iMac, build a pc and hopefully learn something along the way. I mention this as it's my first build and the issue may be hardware realted, or more likely my assembly of the hardware, I've updated my sig to reflect the new parts.
The first decision I made two days ago upon putting the system together. I had two plugs, one for HD audio, another for Realtek audio, I went with the HD option. The other variable that is new to me is an audio option in the Gigabyte uefi/bios for audio which has options for enabled, disabled & auto - I've tried all three. I thought at first going with HD option may have meant sound only via hdmi, I'm using an old vga monitor, but after a little reading it seems the HD option should work with the standard audio out's on the motherboard & case too.
I've got a 3.5mm jack plugged into the line out on the back of the motherboard going to a phono connection on my stereo, I've also tried the headphone out on the front of the case, Zalman Z9.
    I've installed alsa-plugins and alsa-utils. Upon running speaker-test, or speaker-test -c 2 I'm getting:
    speaker-test -c 2
    speaker-test 1.0.27.2
    Playback device is default

The above is all without any .asoundrc in my home directory or anything in /etc.modprobe.d/*.conf
From the wiki I've tried putting
    options snd slots=snd_mia,snd_hda_intel
    options snd_mia index=0
    options snd_hda_intel index=1
in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, and tried reversing the 1 and 0, both 0's, both 1's to no avail.
I've tried a few variations in .asoundrc based on the wiki example with no luck.
I'm lost, this is the first time I've had sound issues with linux and I'm really not sure if it's rooted in the hardware, my first attempt at building a pc or a simple alsa config issue.
Googling for unable to open slave in alsa seems to bring up mainly conflicting programm issues whic I don't think is my issue as I have no sound at all.
    *edit*
perhaps this should be in newbie corner? my linux sound knowledge is definitely newbie status.

Solved, not sure where I was going wrong in my initial attempts but a simple .asoundrc has my speakers singing. Could have sworn this was tried to death in the first half hour or so, oh well.
On the plus side I spent my lunch hour today getting a rough idea of sound on linux and alsa preparing for a fight with my new build, ten minutes after booting up the new machine on my return home & all is well.

  • Aluminium 20" iMac help: always faded characters in applications text

I have had a new 20" aluminium iMac for 2 months now and it is updated with the latest Tiger available. Unfortunately I had few time available recently to use it but now I've just started to notice a very strange effect and actually I can not tell you if it is was like that out of the box or not.
Any application text with small (say < 10px) font has some character faded !
for example if you take iPhoto app and look in the bottom left photo info display, surely one of the char of the creation date time stamp is faded/blurred it seems out of focus. You can move iPhoto window all around but it does not change....and with any application i tried i have the same effect in some place.
the display seems ok with respect to colors, gradient etc and i have not found any bad pixel around and full screen photos are ok. It happens only with fonts !!!
I tried to avoid antialiasing but it does not solve.
Is there anyone with the same or similar issue to share some info before calling AppleCare service?
    thank you

I think you are extremely lucky if your display is OK.
    Try two things.
    1. Scroll a wep page which has a medium grey bar on it up and down.
Does the bar stay the same colour?
On mine it went from gray to light gray to almost white.
2 Fill the screen with a solid lightyish gray photo.
Is the screen show a universal colour ?
Mine varied from top to bottom and in addition much lighter to the left.
These two tests seem to be the best way to higlight a substandard screen.
For normal use the screen may seem OK but I did not want to pay a BMW price for a Ford Edsel and returned the i-mac after a couple of weeks.
In addition scrolling produced an unacceptable flickering even at the slowest speed and this was hard on the eyes.
My son has a five year old i-mac where the screen shows know variation and the many complaints about this new model seem to justified.

  • How can i connect my Imac sound to my stereo receiver speakers and not disconnect the computer's speakers?

I find lots of confusing answers re how to connect my Imac to my stereo receiver, and I aldso want to avoid cutting of the Imac's speakers entirely when the sound goes to the stereo receiver and thsu to the larger speakers. Is there a way to switch between them, or can i keep them running simultaneously, which is what I'd really prefer? What do i need to go to Radio Shack to purchase?
FYI, I have a 27" desktop Imac purchased 3 months ago, running Mountain Lion, and the receiver I want to connect to is an Onkyo TX-8050, wityh lotys of available ports in back - digital, universal, ethernet, and many rca ports "in."

I think this should work, although the description doesn't appear to cover this use. Call Griffin to confirm.

  • IMac sound is no longer working- help?

This morning i turned on my iMac and the sound is no longer working. When i turn on the computer the start up chime in audible, but after that nothing can be heard through itunes, safari, or anything. When i hit the volume keys on my keyboard it shows that the volume is maxed and underneathe there is a circle with a cross through it. I first tried to resolve the problem by going into system preferernces and disconnecting my keyboard from bluetooth and then reconnecting. That didnt work, so i then put my computer to sleep, then restarted it, then shut it down. Still nothing has changed. I followed this up by resetting the SMC and PRAM, but that also has done nothing. Im not entirely sure what to do! If someone could help me out thatd be great. I feel like there should be a simple solution to this problem, but im just missing it!

Reset the SMC and PRAM each at least 2-3 times. I don't know where you got instructions for these resets so please navigate to Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets for correct instructions just in case.

  • IMac sound intermittently stops working

I have an intermittent sound problem with my new iMac.  Periodically, sound stops working in certain user accounts; but, works fine in others.   The only way to temporarily resolve the problem is to reboot the computer.   Haven't found a pattern to when sounds stops working... please help.

I have the same problem on my 21" iMac purchased in early 2011.  My wife's user account is fine.  The settings in System Preferences and Audio MIDI Setup are correct.  I've tried deleting relevant plist files, all to no avail.  Any ideas, anyone?

  • IMac Sound Disabled Occasionally On Start Up?

So as the title says when I boot up my iMac, on occasion, it seems to have the "Updating" Status bar, then the mac boots normally, then the sound is disabled. As I said though this dose not happed all the time but when it dose the only way to fix it is by rebooting the iMac once again. Its not a major or super urgent issue but can be quite an annoancy.
If anyone else has this issue or knows how to fix it some knoladge would be gladly appreciated!
    Thanks!

This is interesting - I had a similar "scare" a few times in the past until I "accidently" found the solution. If your volume is set to "mute" before you reboot, the startup chime will be muted as well. This may not be the specific scenario for you, but it might be a start =)

  • [SOLVED]Choppy to no sound

I have a strange problem with my Toshiba/intel laptop. If I play a mp3 in XMMS there is no sound. If I jump out in the song there is a 1.5 sec sound (the mp3) witch repeats 2 times rapidly. Then there is silence until I jump in the song again. What could cause this? Also I have to unmute with gnome alsa mixer after every restart.
