[SOLVED] AMD APU+Dedicated Graphics - Dual Graphics/Turn One Off?

Hello! I have an AMD 3420M APU with 7670M graphics. I use the Dual Graphics feature on Windows (it's available via CCC). I have a working Arch Linux install however it only uses my integrated chip (which isn't terrible but isn't ideal either). I'll try to outline what I've done and what I hope to accomplish .
My BIOS has no feature to turn off the graphics of the APU and the manufacturer (ASUS) doesn't show any signs of ever updating the BIOS for my series of laptops.
As it's an AMD APU so it has ATI/AMD graphics I'm working with ATI/ATI (instead of the usual Intel/ATI) so I can't just blacklist a module to specifically disable a card.
Reading the wiki I've found vga switcheroo however it seems to explicitly mention Intel/ATI so I'm not sure if it would work for me.
This part got me a little bit excited and I would really like a more experienced user to help me with maybe utilizing the following on Arch:
Arch Wiki wrote:The Dynamic Switch needs Xorg support for the discrete videocard assigned to rendering [1].
So, the method listed here (and the AUR package related) will not work until Xorg team add support for the redering on a second card not attached to video. See here for more info.
Specifically what is exciting is the link here is actually listed as "complete" as well as the (newer) blueprint here. I interpret that as either it will be implemented in Xorg soon or it already has been implemented. Which is it, and if it's implemented, how do I utilize it?
I understand there isn't bucket loads of information about APUs on the Internet yet but it would be nice if this could ultimately lead to a clear and transparent way to utilize APU+GPU combos on Unix-like systems .

Hi, I have the A8 3500-M APU with a similar setup. I solved my problem by installing the fglrx driver for linux from AMD.
When in X, you can use the same control panel as on windows.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMD_Catalyst
Beware though! While it makes the GPU much, much, much more power efficient and greatly increases the battery life, for some reason it causes the GPU to run at max load for a few seconds during startup which burns a ridiculous amount of power (>25W) until X starts, so make sure you start X automatically somewhere early.
Okay thanks! I was on Catalyst but I did not have the "Switchable Graphics" menu! It's also a much more stripped-down version of the menu (which I'm thinking I prefer).
All I've done is run "pacman -Syu" and disable DPMS and now I see the menu. Strange.
Thank you for the post! I'll mark this as solved .

  • AMD HD5470 and HD4250 dual graphics in laptop problem (9926)

I have installed Windows 10(9926) as I seen AMD cards are supported, but they are actually not.
I got 2 graphic cards in my system:
-discrete which is used as default card for system (HD4250),
    -switchable (HD5470) higher performance card.
The HD5470 installs correctly by default using Windows Update drivers, but HD4250 fails to install with error 43. Manual driver install also caused BSOD. The main problem is, they must both co-exist and they are dependant on each other.
Since one is legacy card and one is still a mainline card, is there a chance AMD can release a driver to WinUpdate that will support both of them for older hardware users that are upgrading from previous Windows system (I upgraded from Win7)? Is there a
chance Microsoft can "help/encourage" them do this? I really like new OS so far and I'd like to continue using my laptop instead being forced to buy new (probably never AMD again in this case).

  • Need Help With AMD Radeon HD 8750M + HD 8000 Series Dual Graphics

I recently purchased the ENVY 15z-j000 and upgraded it with the  AMD Radeon HD 8750M + HD 8000 Series Dual Graphics. I wanted the dedicated HD 8750M for playing games and whatnot. When I first opend up my new laptop, I performed a clean install of Windows 8 from a USB drive. This completely wiped all of the preinstalld HP drivers, software, etc.
I installed the beta drivers for my laptop from AMD's website.  Here is my issue. How do I know my dedicated video card is working properly? I ran some games and they seemed to do fine. But when I checked my system with CPUz and dxdialog it said I was running the integrated graphics. How does dual graphics work and how do I make sure I am taking advantage of my dedicated card. An in depth explination and how to for using the AMD dual graphics solution would be apprechiated.

I'm no expert on Switchable Graphics, but you may find the answers to your questions in Overview of Switchable Graphics or Dual GPUs or Switchable Graphics on Notebooks Configured with Dual AMD GPUs.  Be forewarned though, the documents were written for HP PC's using the appropriate HP drivers, if you are using Beta drivers from AMD, then the documents may not match what you see on your system.

  • AMD Radeon HD 8650G + 8750M Dual Graphics and lower WEI score... and keyboard "softness"

    HP ENVY 15 Notebook PC
AMD A10-5750M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics
    16GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD 8650G + 8750M Dual Graphics
Hello I just purchased this machine. Given are the basic specs.  Why would the AMD Radeon HD 8650G + 8750M Dual Graphics  score a 5.9 on the WEI when my two year old hp with an A8-3500 with the 6620G + 6750M scored a 6.5.. I am wondering if this new machine is actually graphically slower. Any Advice?
Second question: Is it normal for the envy to have a soft spot in the keyboard where you have visible flex. while pressing the W, S, A, D, E there is visible deformation.  All the other keys seem solid.
I am debating returning this machine already. Any help.

Are you comparing WEI scores from the same OS??? That is Windows 7 to Windows 7... Windows 8 to Window 8... or Windows 8 to Window 7???
Comparing scores generated by different generations of Windows doesn't mean anything. Notice that the scale on Windows 7 runs from 1 to 7.9 and Windows 8 runs from 1 to 9.9 .  Notice that the graphics scores for both 2D and 3D graphics are lower on Windows 8. Windows Vista, 7, and 8 all use different parameters to determine the scores.
Also, the architecture of the APUs has changed a little of the past couple of generations. And an 8750M and  6750M are basically the same GPU, so the scores should be roughly the same when using the same driver and OS for a comparision.

Mike, after consulting with other members, I believe that dual graphis is not available since it is not noted in the specs.
However, here is a Youtube video about the CPU.  If you do find that you were able to use it by a BIOS change, please share that information with the forum.  Thanks!

  • Question re: AMD dual graphics driver support

    Hi, first time poster
I'm interested in the G505s with Radeon HD 8650G + HD 8570M dual graphics. However, from my research it seems that dual graphics is largely useless, at least with laptops currently. NotebookCheck .com says it brings benefit only if the games support it, and can even be detrimental.
Is this accurate? Another forum said that it was of use only if the laptop maker (i.e. Lenovo) updated drivers to support it. One poster said this happens very seldom. Again, is this accurate?
In a nutshell: is the Radeon HD 8650G + HD 8570M setup benefitless?
    Thanks in advance

Same problem here with HP Pavilion 15 n201axPrevious it showed 2 drivers in the Display Adapter sectionas - >>AMD Radeon HD 7620G+ AMD Radeon HD 8600Mand >>AMD Radeon HD 8600M I tried different versions of Catalyst but now it just shows AMD Radeon HD 7620G and after rebooting, it comes up with an asterisk markI Dont even even the options of Configuring the graphics card when i right click on desktop. It just shows the AMD Catalyst Control Center which brings up options only for the processor. This is seriously getting annoying!

  • How to get dual graphics card to work together?

I have an L series satellite with dual graphics card that wont work together. Its an AMD Radeon 3400m apu with an HD 6520G integrated , and a 6400m discrete graphcs card.
The 6400m will never turn on, I have used amd system monitor to see if it is ever used, but it never is.
Even when the 6520g is at full load it wont turn on.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.
    Thanks.

    Hi
As far as I know this theme has been already discussed here in the forum and the switch between internal and external ATI GPU is not supported.
Just the Optimus technology designed by nVidia is supported
So you can switch between Intel GPU and nVidia (if both would support the Optimus technology)

  • FM2-A55M-E33 and Dual Graphics

I purchased a MSI FM2-A55m-E33 Mainboard, AMD APU (A8-5600K), 8 GB Kingston HyperX Memory and a MSI Radeon 6670 viseo vard to do a CrossfireX budget gaming rig.
I have 2 Problems, the memory can not be set over 1333 MHz, if I set it to 1600 in the bios after about 10 minutes of playing wow, the game closes, if I set it back to default (1333) it runs fine.
2nd problem, when I first set up the PC, and started to set up the bios after 20 seconds the PC would restart. I had the video card plugged into the 6670 card, not onboard, this happened 2 or 3 times so I decided to plug it into the vga on the mainboard, no more resets...so I thought...hmmmmm.
Anyway, set up the bios, logged into Windows, downloaded the drivers, set it all up for dual graphics, restarted the pc. Plugged the monitor in the 6670 (as recommended by amd) and no video, pc boots and goes into windows, but I have no video, so I plugged the monitor into the onboard video and viola, it works.
So, next I turn off dual graphics in the Catylist software, reboot pc to just use the 6670 until I get this figured out, plug the monitor into the video card, guess what...no video again. I can only get video from the mainboard, never from the 6670 video card.
I have been tinkering with this all weekend to no avail, its driving me nuts.
    My setup:
    MSI FM2-A55M-E33 Mainboard
    AMD APU A8-5600K (Unlocked)
    8 GB Kingston HyperX 1600 Mhz DDR3
    MSI R6670 Video Card
    Thermaltake TR2 600 watt PSU, 2X 12V Rails
    Seagate Barracuda 640 GB HD
    Lite-On DVD R/W
P.S, I laready updated the bios to ver 10.1, it didnt fix anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you got the wrong card for "duel graphics".
I'm sure it can't be higher than a 6570 model with a A8-5600 and that's why it isn't working as it should!!
You can now only use the 6670 once you set i in the bios or simply try to exchange it for a 6570.
Yup, what you have integrated graphics: AMD Radeon HD 7560D, recommended what you need for dual graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6570
    http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/dual-graphics/Pages/dual-graphics.aspx#3
Although that RAM is primarily meant for Intel Sandy Bridge system with 1600 XMP profile it's possible it may be OK for your system but you would have been better off getting RAM for AMD system instead. When trying for 1600 did you bump up voltage from 1.5V to a bit more  like maybe 1.55 to see if it would run stable?
Research for proper component compatibility goes a long way to eliminate problems such as what you are having.

  • Windows 8.1 and AMD radeon HD 6700m switchable graphics on HP pavilion dv7

    Hello all
First would like to give positive feedback because my former problem was solved here but this thing appears again.
I have HP pavilion dv 7
    i7 -2670QM (2.20ghz)
    (8 GB Ram)
    Windows 8.1
So my problem is with the switchable graphic as it is stated in the subject.
I had windows 7 previously and I had no problems with switchable graphics-
When I bought licenced win 8 the problems started and are continuing in my 8.1 upgrade.
I tried several thing, from turning off switchable mode in BIOS, turn it off in win desktop, uninstalling drivers or blocking drivers and it still doesn't help
It's a shame that with a computer like this I can't play a bit better games that I was able to when I had win7.
The main problem is that when the game instals it checks your computer and tell you if it's ok or not-and everytime I get that I have intel HD3000 graphics. and not AMD radeon hd 6700m graphic card.
Can anybody tells me how to fix this thing? I don't have any problems in display adapter-all drivers are good to go, i have the latest amd catalyst software.
It would be a shame to buy win 8 if 7 was good and better working on this issue.
    Thank you for help

    Hello again GregaSlo,
It is good to hear from you again!
To prevent your system from crashing, and gain access to your fingerprint reader, I recommend performing a backup and recovery of your system's operating system. This can be done by following this document on Backing Up Your Files (Windows 7), as well as Performing an HP system recovery (Windows 7). This should help recover your system back to factory defaults.

  • Photoshop CS6 have problems with my dual graphics card

I'm currently using photoshop cs6 on my laptop (hp pavilion dv4 3114 ), and this laptop has dual graphics cards(one is mobile intel hd graphics, the other one is ati hd 6750), it ususlly switches to the faster one when games are running or some software that requires a lot of graphic work. But this time I have already set in the graphics card profile to let photoshop use the faster one, but when I launch photoshop cs6 it tells me that the graphics card is not officially supported, as you can see this in the screenshot.
Then I turned to photoshop's preference(performence) and found it only identifies the mobile intel hd graphics. I'm currently using photoshop for designing large posters so performence is very important for me. Is anyone know how to solve this problem so that photoshop can run with the highest performence?

II can't imagine how these computer companies expect to fully integrate GPUs from two different vendors, but they're trying.  To me, knowing a bit about how display drivers are implemented, it seems an impossible task.
I hve heard (in the context of Macs that have this option) that disabling the low power options so that only the more powerful GPU is active can help.  I don't know if that can apply to your system, but it might give you an idea of a place to start looking.
Another thing might be to try to find whatever settings it offers for "affinity" and set it so Photoshop and its cousins use just the ATI GPU exclusively.  It might be the "switchover" process that is causing the problems.
    Good luck.

    Hi ashwani26596,
Let's start by using the HP Support Assistant to check for any updates and drivers to see if that resolves the issue. If that doesn't work then go your Control Panel and then Programs and Features and uninstall the Catalyst Control Center. Then try installing both the Intel High-Definition Audio Driver and the AMD High-Definition Audio Driver.

  • Dual graphics card in M92 Tower?

    Hello,
I have a manager here requesting 3 monitors for each of their departments workstations (Lenovo M92 Tower, Intel i5) and I am just wonder if the M92 supports dual graphics cards. I am aware that it only has a PCIe 1x and PCIe 16x slot - the plan is to install two 1x cards, if they are supported.
Could someone confirm if this will work or not?
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

First, I have no experience at all with more than two monitors on any PC.
However... AMD's EyeFinity setup can support three (or more) monitors using the multiple connectors on a usable video card.  For example, the relatively inexpensive AMD R7 250 card comes in both full-size and low-profile varieties, to fit inside an M92p case (either mid-tower or SFF) in the PCIe x16 slot (which is what you want to use).  The low-profile R7 250 DDR5 card from Sapphire (which includes both low-profile and full-size brackets in the retail box, so you can use the card in either M92p case size) has three digital connectors on it: DVI, miniDP, and microHDMI.  So you can connect three monitors to them. The retail box also includes adapters for the microHDMI and miniDP connectors, but I'd personally just buy a proper 2-ended straight-through cable (say from Monoprice or other online source) with the correct connector at each end to connect each of your three monitors. I'm not a fan of adapters myself, I'd prefer a suitable cable with the correct connectors at each end.
According to the EyeFinity setup instructions, you use two connectors to go to two monitors, and the third (or more) monitors must connect on the DisplayPort path.  In your case you only have three monitors, so you just use all three digital connectors on the R7 250 and you're done!  No need to have two graphics cards, and you get high-performance DDR5 as you want, on three monitors.
Again... I've never done this myself, but EyeFinity for three or more monitors is standard technology given an AMD card like the R7 250 sitting in a single PCIe x16 slot.
