[Solved] Any alternatives to a very buggy Evolution Mail 3.6?

Hi All,
I've kind-of had it with Evolution mail. I've been running 3.x for a long time, and it's always been a very "klunky" experience, with constant issues of hanging, bad HTML mail rendering, and the occasional (twice in a year) need to fix it in the terminal after upgrades (completely corrupted mail stores, etc).
The reason why I put up with it, is that I really want to at least use an application suite where my contacts are centrally managed (Evolution Data Server) and other apps (like Empathy chat) can re-use the central contacts store. Other mail clients manage their own contacts internally in an isolated island (e.g Mozilla Thunderbird). I really want to use a Linux desktop environment where the *basics* (such as centralised contacts) are in place. I mean, we are in 2012. I've been promised flying cars and a semantic desktop :-)
After the update to GNOME 3.6, I have well and truly had it with Evolution. Every now and then it starts to recursively spawn "Saving user interface state" and "Unknown background task" tasks that just bring it to its knees, requiring a process kill. It cannot be regarded as anything more than alpha quality software, and it's starting to cost me a lot of lost productivity.
This is only e-mail, right? It's been around since before 1980. Surely there are alternatives for an intelligent, integrated suite of e-mail/calendar/contacts on the linux Desktop? What do you gentleman and ladies use? Mutt is starting to look real good, and that's just sad for a previous Apple user that switched to Arch Linux (which has generally been a wonderful experience in all non-mail aspects).
I'm at my wits' end, and looking for some advice from fellow users of the thinking man's Linux...
Surely GNOME/Evolution can't be "it" in terms of offering competition to the Apple/Microsoft desktop?

Not necessarily integrated with every app, but integrateable at least. Something using an infrastructure designed for integration, with basic integration already done between the basic components mentioned in my original post. I feared that I would have to choose between quality and desktop integration - this really saddens me, and must be a big stumbling block for the adoption of the Linux desktop.

I believe desktop integration is losing steam as Google and similar ventures take the integration outside the machine. A bad plan IMO, constructed to support disparate and poorly-built operating systems (including those on phones) but at the same time taking users' data away from them.
You are right, I don't want my data taken away from me, and it goes against my grain to rely on a free online service of a publicly-traded corporation 10,000km away from me for my personal communication needs. I want to own and manage my data, and I suspect so do many other Linux users...
I can only hope a renaissance of sorts will happen when people realise that they are no longer in control of their own data, and that hopefully then we will see the emergence of better desktop communication in Linux. I don't care about the masses, who will probably never care about this. I do care about the fellow computer geeks who understand and appreciate this, and are in search of something that at least matches what a Mac/Windows box could do a decade or so ago :-)
For the time being, I guess I have to slog it out with Evolution, and start filing bug reports in the hope that the quality may one day improve.
What surprises me, is that this thread has not drawn a single reply from a fellow frustrated user. I'd have loved a "me too" or two - why does everybody put up with this? You can't all be happy to be stuck in 1990 as far as integration of desktop communication is concerned? I have a lot of respect for minimalist, powerful, single-purpose programs, yet such a setup demands good integration between those components. Are there at least some forward-thinking projects on the go somewhere that is working towards this that anybody knows of?

have you tried InDesign CS3 AppleScript Dictionary in Apple's ScriptEditor... thats a dictionary of object model as i would imagine
1) its FULLY tree-structured dictionary from topmost level down
2) all items are categorized and sorted BY TYPE using various icons
3) every item has a properties catalog card with nice english explanations of that function with hyperlinks to all other relevant items

I have to admit that I don't understand. I see very little difference between the ESTK object model viewer and the AppleScript dictionary viewer. If anything, I think the ESTK version is superior because it connects methods with their objects--something that the AppleScript viewer doesn't do at all. But I pretty much find them equivalent.
Regardless, the descriptions are *identical* between the object model viewer in the ESTK, the AppleScript dictionary viewer, and the Visual Basic/VBA object browser. All descriptions come from the scripting resources in InDesign, and all languages use the same description string.
Jongware's HTML version, however, is much better than any of the above. Its hyperlinking is very good, and everything else can be found with your browser's Find command.
Relying on the object model viewers has freed me from the task of maintaining the reference PDFs--which was taking almost all of my time. Without that burden, I can focus on writing the Scripting Guides, Scripting Tutorial, and example scripts. While I agree that the object model viewers aren't perfect, I believe that this is a better use of my time. I think that scripting examples are more useful, overall, than reference documentation (which simply repeats the information from the scripting resources, in any case).
One very nice thing--because we have to rely on the object model viewers, we were allowed to fix literally hundreds of errors in the descriptions in the scripting resources.

I have lost AirPlay and sharing with my PC since accepting a software upgrade to the TV yesterday. I have tried restoring and reinstalling this software but this failed to solve the problem. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Also check that the ports 5353 and 5354 (Bonjour (mDNSResponder), AirPlay, Home Sharing, Printer Discovery) are open on Windows Firewall.

I updated my verizon iphone 4 to 2.7 and now my phone will randomly shut off and is very "buggy". Is there any way I can downgrade to 2.6?

I've tried carbide.ui several times over the years but never stuck with it long enough to get any decent results. The program is aimed at developers and offers total control but that also makes it feel complex.
The creators on those sites are very simplified and aimed at users without any theme creating knowledge at all. As a result you have much less control over your theme. If you are looking to create themes for your own use then they are fine but if you want to create professional quality themes your only option is carbide.ui.
There are guides for working with carbide.ui which you can find by searching google but you will still need to invest a lot of time and effort if you want good results.
Personally I now just stick to using themes created by professionals such as babi, pizero and tehk along with custom wallpapers that I adapt or create myself.

Any alternative to the BADI for scaled pricing in CCM catalogs

We are not able to use the scaled pricing functionality in CCM. When the item is added to the shopping cart from the CCM catalog the highest price gets chosen by default irrespective of the quantity ordered.
I understand that this can be solved by activating the BADI /CCM/CSE_ENRICHMENT and Implementation /CCM/CSE_OCISCALEPRI
IS THERE ANY ALTERNATIVE TO THIS. CAN THIS FUNCTIONALITY OF SCALED PRICING BE ACHIEVED WITHOUT THIS BADI.

you could use the BADI BBP_CATALOG_TRANSFER to amend the price, in order to do this you would need to pass the lower bound to one of the OCI custom fields in order to pick up this avlue and determine the correct price.
Why do you not want to use the standard implementatiom though?

Captivate 2.0 Very Buggy After Import of SWF File (Flash 8)??

Where should I begin...
Issue 1
I just updated to Cap 2 and started using it. I have come
across a few very weird issues. Everyting works fine until I import
a swf file to the stage. After I import a swf file to the stage I
realize I made a mistake in the swf file. So I updated the swf in
Flash 8 and publish it. I then went into Cap 2 and tried to update
the file (which I noticed that the update button has been removed.)
When I go to import and import the updated file, it does not update
it. I had to close the program and reboot before it would recognize
the new file??? Sounds like a caching issue of some sorts, but very
buggy in my eyes.
Issue 2
So now I have the new file in... great! But when I try to use
one of the drop down menus from the top tool bar, the menu
disappears immeditly after I have clicked on it??? The only way to
get my menu's back is to close the program and reopen it.
Issue 3
I just recently found another problem... I was trying to work
with Cap 2 in its crazy state, and I pulled one of the bars on the
timeline torwards the end of the screen and the timeline
disappeard??? So I went to view and clicked timeline... no change.
Now I do not have a timeline??? I have tried running a reapir and I
even tried several different new projects with different swf files
to see if it was just that file and I have the same results.
Sorry so lengthly on my issues but this just sucks and I need
help!! Anybody got any ideas!??

Issue 1 :- Select the SWF file in library, right click, and
select update.
Issue 2 :- Actually it could be valid for Issue 1 also. It
seems like SWF file you are trying to import, does some action
like, importing another swf or connecting to server on the first
frame itself. Captivate will try to play the first frame of SWF
when you import them. Try creating a keyframe with the stop action
as the first frame in your SWF, and see if you still have the
issue.
Issue 3 :- The approach I am mentioning over here is
generally the last approach which I will take in such scenerios,
but since you have already experimented a little, so try this.
Go to C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application
Data\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
Rename captivate_v20.dat as captivate_v20_org.dat.
Restart Captivate Application.

Are there any alternatives for iphone backup extractor?

Hi all,
I find that the 'iphone backup extractor' program is very useful, however it is quite annoying that they limit the extraction to 4 files at a time and that we have to pay in order to get our own data files propperly. :S
When I restore my old backup from iTunes, every new thing is gone, when I restore the backup I just made, the old backup stuff has gone. It just replaces each other.
Apple should have their own software like this where you can extract what ever you want from your old backups and transfer it on to your phone, such as contacts for example.
Anyway, I was wondering if there is any alternatives for this program, or any other way I can extract my backup files ?

If you're on a Mac, there is a "free" iPhone backup extractor, but none that I know of for Windows. You could always code your own program, that would be free.
Apple doesn't provide a mechanism to do this for the simple reason they don't want users screwing with the iPhone backup. Thus, none of these third-party programs are supported.

Any alternatives to "Photos" app for iPhone/iPad???

I can't stand the white background everywhere as a result of iOS7. For me, the worst is viewing my photo collections in Photos on either iPad or iPhone.
Can anyone recommend a better alternative to Photos? I already checked out iPhoto and didn't like that either.
I just wish Apple would give people the choice to select either black or white as a background, at least in the Photos app.
So any alternatives to Photos or besides iPhoto?

Click on a photo to view it in full screen.
The photo now has white background, click the photo again and the background color will change to black.
You can now slide through your camera roll photos with black background.

Disk utility no longer working, any alternative HDD maintenance prog?

I have an early 2003 Powerbook G4 12" aluminium. 80Gb HDD with about 4.5Gb free. It's running very slowly but I hardly tax the machine so I'm not too bothered, but I tried to run Disk Utility to make sure everything was ok and it couldnt even verify permissions. It said it might take several minutes to run the permissions, but after 20+ minutes I gave up.
Is there any alternative free program that'll check all the important bits and make sure things are fine?
I used to use OS9 and ran things like Techtool lite and Norton speedtools; zapping the PRAM, optimising the drive and that sort of thing. I get the feeling the HDD on this powerbook is fragmented to ****, but then I didn't think Macs slowed down from such things like a PC.
But its made me realise I don't have any kind of housekeeping tools to keep my now OSX machines running (those being the G4 powerbook and a Quicksilver G4, running Leopard and Tiger respectively).

Are you running Disk Utility using your Tiger install DVD? If not, you need to.
Another popular utility is Disk Warrior (more powerful than DiskUtility), however, it costs about $100.
You don't have enough free space on your hard drive as it is typically recommended to have 10-15% free.

Is fw2.2 very buggy or i´m wrong?

I´m still with 2.1 and so far so good. But i never read many errors about the 2.1 that i read about the fw2.2

I would first develop a view which will act as your value selector (I would use a table UI element with filtering capabilities)
Then embed this view in a window so it can be shown as a popup using code in the onEnter event, like

Handango - Any alternatives for software?

Are there any alternatives to Handango for purchasing software for my Curve 8310? Handango stinks.
1. Purchased 2 software titles there today. Downloaded to PC. Went to Unzip and received WinZip error message.. "Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive".
- Deleted from desktop and tried 2 more times. Same message.
- Tried to Open from the Order form. Same message.
2. Handango's website continually crashes when trying to navigate (Page not found)... forced to keep trying.. sometimes the link goes through.
Couldn't seem to find any forum or support group for Handango.
BTW, I'm using WinZip 9.0 SR-1.
Left an e-mail about this with their Customer Support, but I hate relying on others to get back to me. I will GLADLY PAY for long-distance costs.. just give me a telephone number.
No telephone number to call.. Took some searching to find a telephone number. When you do call their Corporate offices for support, you get a message they're only open 9-5 CST M-Th and 9-12 CST F. Well, duh.. some of us work during the week.

Any alternative for Visual Composer?

Dear all,
The new version of Visual Composer are very attractive due to the use of Macromedia Flex technology. However, it seems still not avaliable now. So, I would like to ask if there is any alternative to Visual Composer that:
a) has an attractive user interface, and
b) able to get realtime data from, for example, BW by means of connector?

BI Java Connector can only extract real time information from BW.
However, what I want is an applcation which I can extract real time information from BW and then can generate some financial reports (through some pre-configuration) using those extrected information.
Visual Composer (VC) can do so with very attractive output (i.e. the financial report). However, VC is not mature enough and that's why I would like to look for some other mature alternative.
Is there any application can achieve such purpose?
