{Solved} any way to recover deleted user

Hi,
I had comitted a terible mistake. I have deleted user with userdel (name) command and now I cannot access my home directory. Permission denied.
I can access it as root, so no problem, all the files are there. But, is there any way to recover the deleted user, so I can access my home directory as normal user? A help will be very much appreciated.

Hi.

pass the -M option to useradd to avoid creating user home directory
pass the -u option to specify the user ID to use, look at this with ls -alln /home/ then you should see the uid number side to your old home dir

When you delete anything it's not gone. The OS marks the space it occupies as available for overwriting, but until that overwriting occurs it can be recovered. But... the software used to recover is expensive. For instance

Unfortunately, the mail accounts settings (and messages rules) for Outlook Express are stored in the Windows registry and not in a file that can be easily restored.

I deleted a video off my iPhone 5. Is there any way to recover this? I have read the Wondershare is a file recovery program that my work, but its $100 USD and I was wondering if there was any other way?

    No.
There is no Apple supported way to recover video that you delete if you have not made a backup of it.

To restore from a iCloud backup you have to put your iPhone into setup mode.

  • Is there any way to recover deleted video from iPhoto?

I lost all my iPhone videos because iPhoto didn't export them properly. A whole month of video memories of my newborn's life are gone. Why would a program be designed to export photos and not videos if it allowed videos to be imported from a device?? I am beyond devastated. Files should ONLY be allowed to be dragged and dropped instead of having an "export" option. How in the world was I supposed to know my video files would be exported as blank files?? I know I should have checked the backups before deleting the originals from iPhoto, but I figured when a file was exported, it was copied as is to the external HDD. My question is this: is there ANY possible way to recover old deleted videos??

What version of iPhoto and system are you using?

When you import a video iPhoto creates a jpeg preview version of the first frame.  When you export it out of iPhoto you only get the actual video file if you select Kind = Original.  Either of the other two options give you the prieview image file.
If you have access to the library they may still be in there. Create a smart album with the criteria:  Keyword = movie or File Name contains .mov.  That should display all movie files in the library.  Try the export Kind = Original and see if you can retrieve them.

  • Is there any way to recover deleted photos, etc after a sync?  iTunes didn'

let me say I hate that Apple software tends to give a button to push w/o options or other vital information. It's an example of making things too simple.
I synced my new iPhone with the older iPhone it replaced - not knowing it would delete everything off the old phone. I'm most wanting my photos back. I've tried downloading 3rd party data-recovery software, but it never seems to find the iPhone like it finds external cards or cameras.
Please, Please, is there some app that will work to recover deleted photos? And I think I will never trust Apple software again!

I synced my new iPhone with the older iPhone it replaced - not knowing it would delete everything off the old phone.
It is not possible to sync one iPhone with another.
You can transfer the backup for an older or existing iPhone to a new iPhone but doing so does not touch or delete anything off the older or existing iPhone. There is no device limit for the number of iPhones that can be synced with the same iTunes library and iTunes account on the same computer and each iPhone can have its own sync preferences with iTunes. Syncing one iPhone with iTunes does not touch any data on another iPhone.
Photos in the iPhone's Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera. Photos in the Camera Roll are not touched during the iTunes sync process except for being included with the iPhone's backup which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process. The only way to delete all photos from the iPhone's Camera Roll is by using the iPhone's Erase All Content and Settings option, or by restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. If you restore the iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, the photos that were in the Camera Roll would be restored along with all other data that is included with the backup.
Syncing one iPhone with iTunes does not touch any data on another iPhone that is synced with iTunes on the same computer and it is impossible to sync one iPhone direct with another iPhone.

  • Any way to recover a user account that was deleted?

I probably know the answer to this but I screwed up and deleted a user account with settings, documents, applications migrated from one Mac to another. I had two user accounts for my wife and when I deleted the one which I shouldn't have deleted she lost her iPhoto pics. Any chance that account is buried somewhere deep in my Macbook?

The files are still on the drive in the form of 1's and 0's, but the "directions" to them have been changed so the next time the computer writes data it can likely overwrite part or all of the deleted files.
So you can't boot that machine or download anything to it less you risk overwriting files.
    So, what can be done?
Use one Mac to another using Firewire Target Disk Mode and running a $99 DataRescue to scan the drive and output the files it finds to another hard drive.
This way one can pick through the files recovered and find what your looking for.
Luckily Pictures are rather easy to find, it's text files that are a pain..
Another option is to install OS X on a external drive and then use that to Data Rescue the target drive.
    I've covered it all here,
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3172
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/macbook_pro?view=documents
Once the files are recovered you can recreate the account and do your best to get it back to somewhat.

  • Any way to recover deleted Parallels .hdd/.hds files?

I accidentally deleted my Parallels virtual disk drive that ran Windows XP. Parallels saves a virtual disk as a .hdd package file, containing a .xls and a .hds file. It also saves a .pvs file which is the settings for each individual virtual disk. My XP drive contained much, if not all, of my compositional work, so I need it back.
I recently ran Boomerang Data Recovery and also Data Rescue II in an attempt to recover the deleted data. They found commonly used file types I've deleted e.g. .jpegs, .mp3s etc, but not what I was looking for. After looking at the index of files that these software packages can retrieve, I saw that neither recognised .hdd files (probably because they are packages) or .pvs files. I also saw that Boomerang recognises .hds files as some form of Flash video, however it didn't recover any of those anyway.
I've had no response so far from the Parallels forum, other than a user directing me here. It's probably a long shot but I'm hoping someone on this forum has successfully recovered Parallels files after deletion before, or someone may be able to name a software package that is capable of recovering these files.
    Thanks for reading

If Data Rescue can't help, then your only option would be professional drive recovery service. Do you not have a backup?

  • Is there any way to recover deleted photos without a backup?

I have the Iphone 4 and today when I tried to download the new update, Itunes restored my Iphone. My latest backup is from May, so I lost over 300 photos, all of my text messages etc. Is there anyway to get these photos back without having to pay for one of those online softwares?

Yes dear there is a way please follow the steps
    1. use itunes to create a backup file ( you can try using one that you have saved previously just as a test)
2 to located the backfile you need to click my computer->c:->users->(select user)->(when you get to this file click ALT on the keyboard and watch the new toolbar open.In the new toolbar click tools->folder options->view and select show hiden files.
3 now that you see all the files click on AppData->Roaming->Apple computer->MobileSync->Backup
Here is an example of what i see on my computer as the address path :
    C:\Users\silva\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Select the file that you want to see the deteled images.
4 (the files in there dont have extentions and therefore you don't know what is a image , in order to change the file extension to find your images follow this step) if you have windows 7 please hold shift key and click on the file name PRIOR To open the file. Holding the shift key click with the right side of the mouse and select open command windown here. Once the command windown opens type ren *. *.jpg
if you have other windows you must open the file and once inside the file hold shift key and press the right side buttom on the mouse and click open command windown here and do the same as above.
Now you can view all the IMAGES THAT HAVE BEEN DELETED OR NOT> ALL THE IMAGES THAT WERE EVER TAKEN WITH IPHONE.

  • Any way to recover deleted emails?!

Yesterday, I did a truly stupid thing.
Because Mail messes with PDF attachments I send to clients on a regular basis (it turns the PDFs into jpegs and embeds the file). I'd like to figure out why it does that, but that's not the immediate problem.
I decided to open Entourage and send a "test PDF" to her, to see if that worked better for sending attachments. (it did). However, when I set up a new POP account in Entourage (using info from my Mail account) - it downloaded all my inbox emails from Mail.
Without thinking or using any brain cells at all, I deleted them all from Entourage. And of course when I reopened Mail (which I prefer to use), all the emails were gone. After spending over an hour with a live chat tech person, nothing worked. The only helpful thing I learned was that I should have set up the account in Entourage as an IMAP and not a POP account.
I know I may be SOL, but thought someone here could suggest some magic wand thing to bring back those emails ... most of which were business-related and that it ***** to lose.
I like Mail a lot ... but Entourage and even Outlook have better features for handling attachments. I wish Mail would take some of those features.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions ... or even to slap the back of my hand.
p.s. I'm a graphic designer - so have to deal with sending a lot of PDF proofs.

The thing is, sometimes when I send PDFs it's fine, and sometimes she gets it and it's a jpeg and embedded ... not consistent at all ... I didn't assume for sure it was on my end, but without sitting at her computer and looking at Outlook, which I'll do the next time we meet, it's hard to know what's going on.
I do know that sometimes when I attach a PDF, the whole thing shows up in the body of the email (like it's embedded), and sometimes it's just a PDF icon attachment, and so I know that's something happening on my end before I even send the file, but can't for the life of me figure out what.
I like Mail a lot. But it does lack features that Outlook and Entourage have that I like. For instance being able to send an attachment to the main recipient only, and not the CCs and BCCs, which I used to so that a client knew I was sending the final high-res file to a printer, without having to send it to them. And I never had attachment problems when I used those programs, but maybe that's simply a function of using PC to PC programs.

  • Is there any way to recover deleted photos on my iPad mini after a factory restore?

My daughter forgot her password to her iPad mini and we had to restore it to factory settings. She has never backed up her data to iTunes. Everything I've read says that her photos are lost, but are they really?  I mean, I'm willing to pay a professional to recover them if that is still a possibility.  Please help!!!

Wow.  Thanks for the valuable insight.

    i just want to know

Are you referring to "rejected" clips?
If so, you can either use the Unmark Selected Video Button (star outline button in toolbar) or the Show dropdown menu and choose Rejected Only.
Not sure what you mean by "editing box" either. Do you mean the Project window?

  • Deleted home directory from XRAID any way to recover?

    Hi
Hope someone maybe able to help me with this issue which is causing me great agony at the moment.
We had storage issues on our Apple XRAID and on the RAID it stored approx 700 user home folders. There were under a folder called 'home directories'. A lot of these areas where fairly sizable so we were advised that we can run a command in terminal which can clear the trash folders in a users home directory.
This would certainly help clear some of the unnecessary space that was being taken up.
So in terminal a command was run:
    rm - R -v /Volumes/RAID/Homedirectories/*/.Trash
We were told that the last statement would have interrogated each user home folder and deleted the trash folder.
We found though that whilst this command worked and deleted the trash, it also deleted all user home folders and everything within these folders.
I have a massive dilemma now as all the work is lost and our backup software wasn't working at the same time so I not able to do a restore. I was using RetroSpect 8.
I have tried various undelete software to interrogate the RAID and see if it can recover files. I have used:
Stella Phoenix, Rstudio for Mac and Disk Warrior.
These programs have not been able to recover anything.
I was going to use a freeware tool called TestDisk and photorec buts its going to take about 3 days for it to run on the XRAID as its 3tb in size.
Does anyone think I could try something else to help me find the accidently deleted data. With the rm commands that have been run is there any way to recover from it from an XRAID.
I have found some other software cannot see the XRAID. Does anyone know of other software which has been successful?
    Thank you

Since this issue and through the countless data recovery methods used. I am concerned that the disks will have gone through **** with intensive interrogation of that disks.
Am I just being anal or do I have a genuine reason to be slightly worried.
I am going to put a bid to my seniors about maybe purchasing a new storage device to replace the XRAID and maybe use the XRAID for just backup/archival purposes.
What suggestions do users have with other Storage Arrays? I ideally want something where I can at least have about 5tb but with the option to grow and I want to be able to use both the XRAID and the new storage device in conjunction. Could I possibly have a replication between the new storage array and the XRAID?
Which devices out there would be an ideal replacement for the Apple XRAID that others recommend?
    United Digital Hyperstar
ACTIVE RAID ES (From the developers of the original XRAID)
    Promise vTrak E-CLASS
Am I right in saying that I would replace the existing fibre channel card in the Xserve with a new 4 port 4Gb card. so I can attach 2 ports of the existing Xserve RAID and the other 2 ports to the a new storage device.
My plan would be to use RAID5 for redundancy, any benefits of using some other RAID such as 1+0 or RAID50?
    Thanks
