[SOLVED] Arch failed to mount /boot

Hey there,
after my btrfs filesystem somehow got corrupted, so it would only mount my "/"-filesystem as read-only, I backed it up with rsync, recreated the partition and then transfered the data back. After that, I was unable to boot anymore with this error:
[1.593560] systemd-fsck[306]: fsck.fat 3.0.27 (2014-11-12)
[1.594292] systemd-fsck[306] /dev/sda1: 98 files, 43105/98304 clusters
Mounting boot...
[FAILED]Failed to mount /boot.
See "systemctl status boot.mount" for details
SystemD the prompted me with it's emergency mode, but this didn't react to any keyboard presses, so I couldn't check the exact error with sth. like journalctl -xb. I then booted a, today downloaded, Arch Live-CD and tried to access the logs via journalctl -b -D /var/log/journal/ didn't work out: It only had the logs from before the boot problem.
With a bit of googling I figured a way of fixing this could be chrooting in and reinstalling initramfs, typing chroot errored out with:
chroot: failed to run command /usr/bin/zsh: No such file or directory
I tried commenting out /boot in fstab, but at booting something [FAILED] with Load Kernel Modules and I instantly got prompted with a blank, black screen with a "_" blinking in the top left corner, like a normal console, expect any prompt of any kind was missing and it didn't react to my keystrokes, similiar to SystemD's emergency mode
So essentially two smaller problems with few google results are hindering me from solving my big problem.
Thanks for any help in advance,
Quanttek

Probably easier to use `arch-chroot` though:

Thanks. Using arch-chroot worked out. It is/was certainly no environment issue, I even tested it with both i386 and x86_64.
I used it to reinstall mkinitcpio and to update my system, so now on boot I dont get a failure on mounting /boot anymore, but I still have problems with Load Kernel Modules.
My screen now looks something like this: http://m.imgur.com/ATWHJoq
Again it's not reacting to any keystrokes. I'll get some sleep now and will look tomorrow into getting some information from the journal logs.

    I dual boot Arch Linux and Windows 8 on a laptop under UEFI, and have had this setup for about a year now. This problem seems like it may be associated with recent problems I've been having with windows 8 (Spontaneously restarting itself 2 or 3 times a day with a BSoD and "Kernel Data Inpage Error".) One time after such a restart I went to boot Arch Linux after the restart rather than Windows and got errors similar to the one I first posted, except that they were occurring with my Windows NTFS partitions which I mount in Arch Linux. After booting into Windows and restarting manually, the error just became what it is now. However I'm not sure if this was where the problem first began or not as I haven't used Arch Linux very often over the past few months.
    Does anyone have any idea what's going on or how to fix it?
    Thanks.

    pacman -Q linux
    linux 3.11.6-1
    uname -a
    3.9.9-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Jul 3 22:45:16 CEST 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    No idea how that's happened... I initially tried 'mkinitcpio -p linux' but it also did nothing.
    EDIT: Turns out I must have updated at some point and forgotten a crucial step in manually copying the new files in /boot/ to /boot/efi/EFI/arch/ which is necessary when updating under UEFI systems. I updated again using the live USB/chrooting, manually copied everything that was needed and everything's working again!

  • [SOLVED] Arch won't mount my hard drives correctly, problems at boot.

    Sometimes (only sometimes) Arch Linux will have an error during bootup because my Linux drive gets mounted as sdb instead of sda. My NTFS Sata storage drives gets mounted in its place as sda.
    When this happens, Arch Linux will stop booting at the "checking filesystems" step:
    :: Checking Filesystems [BUSY]
    /dev/sda3:
    The superblock could not be read or does not describe a corect ext2
    filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
    filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
    is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
    e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
    [FAIL]
    **************** FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED ****************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write type: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the maintenance shell the system will *
    * reboot automatically. *
    Give root password for maintenance
    (or type Control-D to continue):
    And from there i have to remount my drives manually or restart the computer. Everytime I start the computer, I simply have to hope that my Linux drive will mount as sda. It's totally hit and miss.
    Now, I know that my superblock is not corrupt. fsck is failing because it is looking for my linux filesystem on sda. It is encountering my NTFS Sata drive on sda instead of the expected Linux ext filesystem.
    So how do I know that this is happening?
    Well, after giving the root password, it shows the root prompt
    [root@(none) ~]#
    and i proceed to use the lshw command to see what's up with the drives:
    [root@(none) ~]# lshw -short | grep /dev/
    /0/6/0.0.0 /dev/sdb disk 120GB WDC WD1200JB-00E
    /0/6/0.0.0/1 /dev/sdb1 volume 101MiB Linux filesystem partition
    /0/6/0.0.0/2 /dev/sdb2 volume 258MiB Linux swap volume
    /0/6/0.0.0/3 /dev/sdb3 volume 7506MiB EXT4 volume
    /0/6/0.0.0/4 /dev/sdb4 volume 104GiB EXT4 volume
    /0/6/0.1.0 /dev/sdc disk 81GB Maxtor 6Y080P0
    /0/6/0.1.0/1 /dev/sdc1 volume 76GiB Windows NTFS volume
    /0/8/0.0.0 /dev/sda disk 640GB Hitachi HDT72106
    /0/8/0.0.0/1 /dev/sda1 volume 596GiB Windows NTFS volume
    So, clearly, this shows that my Linux drive has gotten mounted as sdb and my NTFS Sata drive has gottem mounted as sda. It's totally random: sometimes they mount vice versa and the system boots just fine.
    When Arch does happen to mount itself properly as sda and the system starts successfully, then the lshw command shows this:
    [root@(none) ~]# lshw -short | grep /dev/
    /0/6/0.0.0 /dev/sda disk 120GB WDC WD1200JB-00E
    /0/6/0.0.0/1 /dev/sda1 volume 101MiB Linux filesystem partition
    /0/6/0.0.0/2 /dev/sda2 volume 258MiB Linux swap volume
    /0/6/0.0.0/3 /dev/sda3 volume 7506MiB EXT4 volume
    /0/6/0.0.0/4 /dev/sda4 volume 104GiB EXT4 volume
    /0/6/0.1.0 /dev/sdb disk 81GB Maxtor 6Y080P0
    /0/6/0.1.0/1 /dev/sdb1 volume 76GiB Windows NTFS volume
    /0/8/0.0.0 /dev/sdc disk 640GB Hitachi HDT72106
    /0/8/0.0.0/1 /dev/sdc1 volume 596GiB Windows NTFS volume
    The above correctly mounted format shows the drives in the same order as my Hard Disk boot priority in BIOS as well as in the same order as during the initial drive detection directly following the memory test (don't know if it has anything to do with it though).
    So my question is this. How do I ensure that Arch Linux mounts itself as sda ALL of the time, and not randomly?
    Or should I remove my sda entries in etc/fstab and let Arch determine where my Linux filesystems are? If so, how?
    It's interesting to note that GRUB is set to boot Arch Linux from hd0, which should be sda.
    It's also intriguing to note that if I take out my Sata drive, I never encounter this problem.

    Thanks kgas, here's what i found out so far:
    Alright so after rebooting, this is what i determined:
    When Linux mounts the drives incorrectly (take note of the parts in bold, the short numbers are NTFS filesystems, long numbers the Linux filesystems):
    [trusktr@rocketship ~]$ ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid
    total 0
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 01CA836D8BE82040 -> ../../[b]sdc1[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 0ddf0e41-e7e6-4af5-b0e9-bc79a91b12eb -> ../../[b]sdb1[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 92b88528-dd0f-4c1b-bcce-54084ef2aceb -> ../../[b]sdb4[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 C838CF5838CF4462 -> ../../[b]sda1[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 cdb33de5-0100-4c5f-a9b1-5c1a444e6eac -> ../../[b]sdb3[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 d0a5d49d-169d-43ce-af0f-216dc4a9f604 -> ../../[b]sdb2[/b]
    So an NTFS filesystem is mounted in sda instead of the Linux filesystem
    When Linux mounts everything properly:
    [trusktr@rocketship ~]$ ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid
    total 0
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 01CA836D8BE82040 -> ../../[b]sdb1[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 0ddf0e41-e7e6-4af5-b0e9-bc79a91b12eb -> ../../[b]sda1[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 92b88528-dd0f-4c1b-bcce-54084ef2aceb -> ../../[b]sda4[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 C838CF5838CF4462 -> ../../[b]sdc1[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 cdb33de5-0100-4c5f-a9b1-5c1a444e6eac -> ../../[b]sda3[/b]
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jun 14 21:08 d0a5d49d-169d-43ce-af0f-216dc4a9f604 -> ../../[b]sda2[/b]
    This doesn't tell us much except that I indeed do have uuid's for all the drives.
    So, i guess as kgas said, i probably need to use the uuid in fstab so that Linux always knows which hard drive is the linux drive! In that case, only the uuid for the Linux drive will be necessary. For the other drives it wouldn't matter so much i guess since they don't contain the operating system.
    Alright, i'll be back to determine if this fixes it!

  • [SOLVED] netfs fails to mount samba mountpoint in fstab

    Answer:  netfs fails to mount my samba mountpoint because eventhough
    network is before netfs, and network is not started in the background, it
    still seems to take a while to complete, but it doesn't block netfs from running.
    If I put some stalling code in /etc/rc.d/network, and make it wait, then netfs
    will mount the shares, because network was allowed to start and netfs can
    it can find the servers.
    Now, what I want to know is why my network starts up so slowly.
    ----------------------- Read thread for details ----------------------
    This similar setup is working on my old Gentoo setup.
    fstab
    //tib/public /mnt/network/tib smbfs rw,user,auto,guest 0 0
    tib resolves to a server on my LAN.
    When I boot my ARCH system, it gets to netfs daemon, and times out trying to
    access the server.  I get the message
    5711: Connection to tib failed
    SMB connection failed
    The boot completes, and I log in and get the following
    $ ping tib
    PING tiburon.mill (192.168.0.36) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from tiburon.mill (192.168.0.36): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.354 ms
    64 bytes from tiburon.mill (192.168.0.36): icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.371 ms
    and, I can mount it like this (which reads /etc/fstab)
    $ mount //tib/public
    $ ls /mnt/network/tib/ | wc -l
    11
    It seems like ARCH isn't able to use the network until sometime after this point in the boot.  Here's my rc.conf daemons
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond sshd alsa)
    I tried putting netfs last, but that made no difference.  I also tried to load netfs in the background without benefit.
    Note:  cifs doesn't work either; and I get more descriptive errors
    :: Mounting Network Filesystems
    mount error: count not find target server. TCP name tib/public not found
    No ip address specified and hostname not found.
    OK, that clear enough.  But, the hostname is found right when the boot process finishes and I get a prompt.
    And, I've tried the ip address, and FQDN too.
    Any ideas?
    Last edited by ristretto (2007-07-24 05:04:57)

    ok, gave it a try.
    //tib/public /mnt/network/tib cifs rw,user,noauto,guest 0 0
    $ cat /etc/rc.d/local
    #!/bin/bash
    mount //tib/public
    $ grep DAE /etc/rc.conf
    # DAEMONS
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond sshd alsa local)
    Note local at the end.
    Now, all the daemons load up quick, and then local goes and times out, and I
    get the same error.
    mount error: count not find target server. TCP name tib/public not found
    No ip address specified and hostname not found.
    putting mount in .bash_profile is a bit of a security issue (though not really on my setup)
    but, more importantly, it mounts each time I log in to that account (say each ssh window to the box.)
    I'm thinking it's a bug in the initialization process somewhere?  I've never had this problem on other distros.
    What thinks you?

  • [SOLVED] Arch freezes after mounting drives, cannot boot

    Installed Arch maybe a week ago, and everything worked flawlessly until i rebooted today.
    I havent done any major changes during that session that i recall, and after a reboot, my arch "froze" mid boot, after (what i think is) mounting drives (sda3 is OS, sda5 is Data):
    /dev/sda3: clean, 168249/2298240 files, 1485743/9175040 blocks
    [      4.203801] microcode: failed to load file amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin

    systemd-fsck[248]: /dev/sda5: clean, 5230/3932656 files, 475548/15729635 blocks
    This is all the info that i get.
    If i remember right, this was shown when arch was booting up normally too, but it ussualy just hanged for a second or two at it. I've tried leaving it for almost half an hour now, and it didnt budge.
    And it doesnt actually freeze, since there is a blinking " | " after the last line (no input is being accepted though)
    This might be something stupidly simple, but im completely new to Arch (and linux in general)
    I do have a live cd though, so if there's any conf that you think would help, i can get it.

  • [SOLVED] Arch linux won't boot after pacman -Syu

    So yesterday I upgraded the packages on my system along with installing steam.
    There was one conflicting package but I don't remember exactly what it was (something containing usb?). I just hit Y to continue but in retrospect maybe should have investigated more.
    Now when I start my system it gets up to "Started Accounts Service" and then the rest of the output is on a single line as if the newline characters aren't being printed. It stays like this for around 30 seconds before my graphics cards fans max out and then it reboots the system.
    Any help debugging this would be appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux won't boot

    Hi,
    I was bad and didn't update my packages often enough, and now my arch installation on a desktop won't boot.
    I've booted off of a usb arch install, mounted all of the appropriate harddrive partitions, and used arch-chroot to switch to the offending hard drive.
    The /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg is such:
    # Config file for Syslinux -
    # /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg
    # Comboot modules:
    # * menu.c32 - provides a text menu
    # * vesamenu.c32 - provides a graphical menu
    # * chain.c32 - chainload MBRs, partition boot sectors, Windows bootloa
    ders
    # * hdt.c32 - hardware detection tool
    # * reboot.c32 - reboots the system
    # * poweroff.com - shutdown the system
    # To Use: Copy the respective files from /usr/lib/syslinux to /boot/sysli
    nux.
    # If /usr and /boot are on the same file system, symlink the files instea
    d
    # of copying them.
    # If you do not use a menu, a 'boot:' prompt will be shown and the system
    # will boot automatically after 5 seconds.

    Everything looks fine to me, /dev/sda1 is /boot, which has the same UUID as what mdadm has for /dev/md0, which is what syslinux.cfg has been told to boot off of. I'm not sure what to do from here.

    It's long that Arch uses rw argument on kernel command line.
    You should correct your syslinux.cfg as follow.
    LABEL arch
    MENU LABEL Arch Linux
    LINUX ../vmlinuz-linux
    APPEND root=LABEL="archiso:1" rw ## <<< Here's the diff
    INITRD ../initramfs-linux.img
    This isn't for the fallback menu entry, you just analyze the differences and do same there.
    I'm not familiar with syslinux, I just suppose you may try to test these options on-the-fly, before write them permanently. So when the syslinux menu will appear at boot time, please find the way to enter in edit mode and apply the correction. That will stay for the time you boot once. But it will ensure if it'll be good enough and do the writing later once you've booted.

  • [SOLVED] Arch very slow at boot, high HDD usage

    Hi,
    After an upgrade today (I don't know exactly what packages I upgraded, but it had been around 2 days between when I did it last), my Arch install has been very slow booting up. There is VERY high hard disk usage while booting, and I get the following messages that I never used to get before:
    1 - stalling at running cleanup hook
    2 - A start job is running dev-sda2.device (/home)
    When it has fully booted up into KDM, any keyboard press and the HDD is paging again and things slow to a crawl. I tried logging in, but 10 minutes in and things were still loading.
    I suspect that I might have lost my journal or suffered extreme file system corruption, but I have done nothing of the sort, after the upgrade Arch had a clean shutdown with no out of place messages.
    Right now I'm at school, so I won't be able do more debugging, but once I get home, I'll try and do fsck from the live USB.
    Thanks!
    EDIT: I looked at the systemd wiki, and added noauto,x-systemd.automount to fstab and now instead of saying "A start job is running..." it's now showing: "...recreate volatile files and directories..."; it came and went so fast I didn't have time to read the entire line.

    So, after coming back home, I booted up the live USB and did fsck -fpv on both root and /home. After that I was at a loss so I restarted, and everything seems to be working now.
    I will mark this thread solved, however if someone knew exactly why this happened and what to do in the future to prevent it, it would be eternally helpful!
    Anyways thanks Arch Forums for nothing /s !

  • [SOLVED]eCryptfs fails with mount: mount(2) failed: No such file or d

    Since some weeks back I cant seem to mount my eCryptfs stuff.
    Usually I just mounted my lvmdrive and did a:
    sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/Olddrive;sudo ecryptfs-recover-private /media/Olddrive/home/.ecryptfs/user/.Private;sudo ecryptfs-recover-private /run/media/user/lvmdriveid/.ecryptfs/user/.Private
    Hit y,y [password] repeat and there it was, truly bob was my uncle.
    However, These days I get a:
    Inserted auth tok with sig [key] into the user session keyring
    mount: mount(2) failed: No such file or directory
    What have changed?
    *disclaimer: I might not be supersure about the exact " /media/Olddrive/home/.ecryptfs/user/.Private " as I fiddled a bit with it before I rebooted earlier today after a -Suy.

    Forgot to update, in any case I managed to access my data through the old manual way.
    cd /run/media/user/harddrive/.ecryptfs/user/.encryptfs
    sudo ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase ./wrapped-passphrase
    sudo ecryptfs-add-passphrase --fnek
    Inserted auth tok with sig [aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa] into the user session keyring
    Inserted auth tok with sig [bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb] into the user session keyring
    sudo mount -t ecryptfs /run/media/user/harddrive/home/.ecryptfs/user/.Private /media/mountdir
    Used default settings execpt for:
    Enable filename encryption (y/n) [n]: y
    and of course inserted [bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb] when asked:
    Filename Encryption Key (FNEK) Signature [aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa]: bbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

  • [Solved] Arch Linux won't boot, GRUB error 15

    Recently I did a system upgrade with "pacman -Syu". There wasn't many updates i only saw a kernel upgrade to 3.0.1 (something like that), the update was complete and I decieded before I restarted my system i would install LibreOffice, there was another error, with that installation. There was some error with redline and raptor (I'm not 100% on the names but i know they both start with R and it was two of them). Any way it was somewhere along the lines of "redline: /usr/.... : already exists in the filesystem".
    So before I continued I figured screw it, I'll restart my system and figure out what's wrong later. So I reboot, and can't get back in -_-* great. So now I have the GRUB error 15 the prompt tells me press any key to continue... and now I can only boot into my windows partition. What can I do from here? I don't want to reinstall arch, only as a last resort.

    not sure what you're saying ... grub was working fine before if that's what you're asking, I've had the distro on my system for about a week before today.
    to be honest I'm not even sure what is a custom kernel, from day one I just did a "pacman -S linux linux-headers", which replaced kernel26 and it's headers and from there I was golden, until today.
    P.S I'm sure it was this update that did it (http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/x86_64/linux/)

  • [SOLVED]arch on usb stick, boot error

    Hi,
    i would like to create a i686 rescue usb arch install.
    after googling a lot ive tried to install arch on my usb stick and get it booting, what ive done:
    My x2 is running arch64, so i started with:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch64_Install_bundled_32bit_system
    Changed HOOKS in mkinitcpio.conf to(for usb support at boot):
    HOOKS="base udev autodetect usb ide scsi sata filesystems"
    And regenerated the mkinit file:
    mkinitcpio -p kernel26
    Thx to MrElendig, #archlinux
    Grub install: according to the "flash linux" install guide i used:
    grub-install --recheck --root-directory=/mnt/usbkey /dev/sda1
    But now the system stops with:
    kinit: Cannot open root device sda1 (8,1)
    kinit: init not found
    any ideas?
    greets
    metalfan
    Last edited by metalfan (2008-03-25 15:12:16)

    using the HOOK autodetect wasnt a great idea since i used another system for testing the stick, removed it and added usb instead.
    Thats it, some minor modifications are needed. Will add the steps to the wiki somewhere below "usb booting".

  • [SOLVED] Mount /boot/efi fails after linux-....pkg.tar.xz upgrade

    Can anyone help with this please?  Sorry if it's a well known issue and I have just failed to find the solution, but I have searched for one.
    I use yaourt -Syu regularly, and generally it's great.
    BUT - every time linux-3.17...-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz is upgraded the system fails to reboot!  Throwing something like:
    Nov 17 16:09:49 cart systemd[1]: boot-efi.mount mount process exited, code=exited status=32
    Nov 17 16:09:49 cart systemd[1]: Failed to mount /boot/efi.
    Nov 17 16:09:49 cart systemd[1]: Unit boot-efi.mount entered failed state.
    Nov 17 16:09:49 cart mount[232]: mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'
    After much struggling I have discovered a workaround, but I don't understand it - or like it.  This is what I do:
    1. Boot from an archiso image cd in UEFI mode
    2. Mount the correct partitions on / /home and /boot
    3. # arch-chroot /mnt /bin/bash
    4. # cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
    5. # pacman -U linux-3.16.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz  (or whatever is the latest upgrade)
    Then, when I exit and reboot all is well again.
    I use the rEFInd boot manager to choose between ArchLinux and ,reluctantly, Windows 8.1 - I suspect that might have something to do with my problem but I don't know what.
    If anyone can tell what I am doing wrong, please explain.
    Thanks
    John

    Hi Matt,
    I think you've done it - thanks a lot.
    I changed this line in my /etc/fstab :
      UUID=0E51-F605          /boot/efi     vfat ...
    to
      UUID=0E51-F605          /boot     vfat ...
    and I think that's done the trick.
    I did pacman -U linux-3.16.3-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz again without booting from an archiso image cd in UEFI mode, which would previously have failed - and it didn't.
    I look forward to the next actual upgrade of linux-3...
    Thanks again,  I can't remember how, or why, I went wrong in fstab but I won't do it again.

  • [Solved] Pacman errors: "call to execv failed", system not booting

    Recent upgrade (yesterday) - problems went like this:
    1) pacman -Syu attempted "filesystem" upgrade and threw errors about some directories in /usr/local being 775 not 755.
    2) that was because I had a non-standard package in there. I changed just those relevant directories to 755.
    3) reattempted pacman -Syu but got a bunch of errors: "call to execv failed"
    4) system was immediately borked. Reboot now throws me into a shell.
    This is a 32 bit system.
    Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated.

    Solved my problem with the following method:
    1) used Arch LiveCD. Mounted boot and / partitions
    2) pacman -r /path/to/root -Syyu glibc filesystem
    3) reboot gave "Unable to find root device error"
    4) ran LiveCD again following these instructions: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … onger_boot

  • [SOLVED] Arch Linux Duke (2007) Fails to Boot

    Folks, I have a unique and challenging problem that has exhausted my Arch Linux skills, and so I am now turning to you.
    I have a vintage Pentium Pro 200 system (that’s 200 MHz folks! – 200 MHz 686 architecture – the original 686!), two CPUs, running a dual boot between Windows NT 4.0 and Arch Linux Duke (2007). It has 512 MB of RAM and a 120 GB hard drive, partitioned up between Windows NT and Linux. I built this system new in 2007, hence the dated version of Arch.  It has run like a charm all these years, granted not getting that much use. After about a year of no use at all, I fired the system up last week to help with a little research for a blog post I was writing on networking Windows NT 4.0 and Mac OS 8.6. Windows NT 4.0 fired right up with no issue, and after I was done testing what needed to be tested I tried to boot over to Arch.
    After a year of disuse, Arch unexpectedly and stubbornly refused to boot. The boot process started up just fine, but towards the end, it declared that it could not mount the root file system on the root device and took a kernel panic and stopped. My Arch skills have gotten a bit rusty in the last few years, but I dusted them off and went to work. My guess was a file system or superblock error. Arch wouldn’t boot, but I dragged out my trusty RIPLinux 2.9 Rescue Live CD and fired it up. It came right up and ran, and I was able to mount the Arch partition and view all the files… everything seemed to be there; it just wouldn’t boot. Windows NT 4.0 AND RIPLinux both boot and run on the machine, so the hardware is fine as well.
    A little information on the disk layout. Windows NT 4.0 is in the first partition on the hard drive. The extended partition has a second Windows NT 4.0 partition (sort of a /home partition for Windows NT 4.0), followed by the main Arch partition (the one I am trying to boot), followed by a swap partition and then the largest partition, which I use to share data between Arch and Windows NT 4.0 (I have loaded an ext2/3 driver into Windows NT 4.0 and it happily accesses the Linux partitions on the box).
    RIPLinux’s e2fsck did find some issues with the Arch partition and I had it repair them all. I checked again afterwards that all the files were still there, and they were. With the partition now known to be clean, and the superblock repaired from one of the backups, all should have been well. However, Arch still wouldn’t (and still won’t) boot.
    RIPLinux has a kind of a chain loader function, so I had it attempt to start up Arch for me. However, this was flummoxed by the fact that Arch addresses all my hard drive partitions as /dev/sdax and RIPLinux addresses them as /dev/hdax. Hence, without a common language, it was hard to get the one to start the other. Still, using this function, I have been able to get a crippled version of Arch running on the machine again. No modules had been loaded, and so it couldn’t do almost anything, but there it was (and is), Arch Linux Duke, at the CLI level. From there, I can see all the files, I can move freely in and out of my user account and the root account, but I can’t make the thing actually boot properly.
    If you have read this far, you are a trooper.  Summarizing what I know, the hardware is good, the file system is clean, the superblock is good, I can mount it cleanly from a live CD and I can chain load a crippled version of Arch. Here is the boot process blow-by-blow. When I try to do a normal boot, the Windows NT 4.0 loader passes control to the Lilo boot sector I have placed on hda1 (sda1 in Duke’s parlance). Lilo takes over, present a menu and when I select Duke, takes off. Arch Linux Duke starts to boot. It gets a good long way along, all the way along to:
    :: Loading udev events                [Pass]
    :: Mount root Read-only
    :: Checking file systems
    This is where it stops.
    The next thing I see is:
    /dev/sda6
    The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else) then the superblock is corrupt and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
        E2fsck –b 8193 <device>
    I then get a sort of character based splash screen that says
    **********FILE SYSTEM CHECK FAILED ****************************
    *   Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root file system
    *   is currently mounted read-only. To remount it read-write, type:
    *   mount –n –o remount,rw /.  When you exit the maintenance
    *   shell, the system will reboot automatically
    Give root password for maintenance
    At this point, I give the root password and enter the maintenance shell as root. I typed in “mount” and the first entry I got back is
    /dev/sda6 on / type ext3 (rw)
    This is exactly the root partition that the start up complains about. It is clearly there.  I can see it, I can walk around it… it is clearly there. Why won’t it boot? Despite the message, the superblock is fine – it passes every test e2fsck can throw at it.
    At this point, I did a “e2fsck /dev/hda6 (which is how RIPLinux would have passed it into Arch” and it says it is “clean”. I suspect that the Superblock message is because Arch sees root as sda6, while RIP passed it in as hda6...
    Deciding to see what Arch would be seeing as it tried to set things up in the boot sequence, I tried the following next:
    # mknod “/dev/root2” b 3 6
    (“3” because RIPLinux refers to my hard drive as IDE, while Arch refers to it by major number “8”, which is SCSI. By the way, it IS an IDE drive – not sure why Arch insists on using the sdx nomenclature instead of hdx)
    Then I entered “mount /dev/root2 /mnt/hda6” and “ls /mnt/hda6”
    All was well. I can make the node, I can mount it, and I can see the contents. All is clearly well, but something is clearly wrong enough that Arch can’t boot.
    I am totally out of ideas. I have tried every trick I know and am out of tricks. I would welcome any insights as to what I could try to get this venerable Arch installation back on its legs.
    By the way, the key section of the /etc/lilo.conf file (lest anyone want to know) is:
    image = /boot/vmlinuz26
       root = /dev/sda6
       label = ArchLinux-Duke
       initrd = /boot/kernel26.img
       read-only
    I am stumped. Thanks in advance for any and all pointers you may be able to offer.

    Folks, thanks for all your helpful comments, and I wanted to report back to you that I finally overcame the issue, and ArchLinux-Duke (2007) is once again executing flawlessly on my old Pentium Pro 200 system. I won't bother reporting here all the blind allies I went down as I tried to figure out what was wrong, but in the end, literally moments before I was about to give up and overwrite my Arch installation with a new Linux variant (antiX seemed well suited for such old and low power hardware), my attention was drawn to a note I had made in my files back in 2007 about a problem with similar symptoms. In that case, I had just deleted ZenWalk Linux from the hard drive (both Arch and Zen had been on the drive), and merged several partitions to make use of the newly free space. This had changed Arch's view of the drive lettering, and what had been its /dev/sddx root device was now /dev/sdcx. Arch failed to boot, throwing off the same errors I was seeing now. I wish I had recalled that note a month or so ago! It would have saved me a lot of work and a lot of frustration.
    At any rate, as a last step, and testing the idea that maybe the drive lettering had changed for some reason, I repeatedly manually booted Arch, specifying root=/dev/sda6, then /dev/sdb6, then /dev/sdd6, and finally, /dev/sdc6. Eureka! Arch now considered itself to be on /dev/sdc6 whereas previously it had been on /dev/sda6. This got me part way there, but the boot failed at the filesystem check stage and threw me into root. I disabled the file system check in /etc/rc.sysinit and got farther. Then I cleaned up /etc/fstab to agree with the new sdc naming, and I was back on the air fully.
    So, what had happened was that Arch had changed its view of the drive it was on from sda6 to sdc6. While I could not understand why this "sudden" change had occurred, at least I had a solution, and had Arch back up and running.
    Trolling through the rest of my notes, I found the answer. In 2012, the Tekram SCSI card in the machine failed, and I ultimately replaced it with an Adaptec card. The Tekram card did not have a BIOS segment on it. The Adaptec card did. My guess is that this caused the two internal SCSI devices I have built into the system (Iomega ZIP and Jaz respectively) to be enumerated first, claiming the "sda" and "sdb". device names. That left "sdc" for the root device, and that is where Arch went next.  This is my guess anyway.
    I should have caught this issue back in 2012, at the time, but from my notes, I can see that I tested the new card thoroughly using the  Windows NT 4.0 side of the machine, but never thought to bring up Arch as well. Hence, this problem lay dormant for two years, before I attempted to fire up Arch last month and blundered right into it.
    It has not all been bad. I have learned more about the ext2 and ext3 file systems and superblocks in the intervening time than I will ever need to use. I have learned how to manually boot Linux on a machine whose BIOS is so old that it cannot address the disk cylinder that the kernel is on and I have completely refreshed the many general Linux skills that used to just flow from my finger tips. It has been a frustrating experience, but ultimately a successful and useful one.
    Just wanted to let everyone know that this is now [SOLVED]. I would mark the post as such, but I don't see any obvious way to do that. Thanks again everyone.

  • [SOLVED]dual boot-Failed to mount real root device

    Hello,
    Here is my drives partition info:
    /dev/sda1       2,949,122,048 3,907,028,991   957,906,944   7 NTFS / exFAT / HPFS
    /dev/sda2               2,048   901,117,951   901,115,904  83 Linux
    /dev/sda3    *    901,117,952 1,925,115,903 1,023,997,952   f W95 Extended (LBA)
    /dev/sda5         901,120,000   901,439,487       319,488  83 Linux
    /dev/sda6         901,441,536   905,648,127     4,206,592  82 Linux swap / Solaris
    /dev/sda7         905,650,176 1,925,115,903 1,019,465,728  83 Linux
    /dev/sda4       1,925,115,904 2,949,122,047 1,024,006,144   7 NTFS / exFAT / HPFS
    /dev/sdb1               2,048     2,099,199     2,097,152  83 Linux
    /dev/sdb2           2,099,200    53,299,199    51,200,000  83 Linux
    /dev/sdb3          53,299,200    73,779,199    20,480,000  83 Linux
    /dev/sdb4          73,779,200   224,673,791   150,894,592   7 NTFS / exFAT / HPFS
    I installed Opensuse 12.1 on /dev/sda5. It is booting with Grub, working with no problems. The computer boots directly to Grub menu.
    THEN, I installed Arch linux (last release) on both sda and sdb following these mounting points:
    /dev/sdb1 mounted as /boot  Ext2
    /dev/sdb2 mounted as /   BTRFS
    /dev/sdb3 mounted as /usr  BTRFS
    /dev/sda2 mounted as /home  BTRFS
    Intstallation went smooth until the end. Installed the bootloader.
    Now, I am trying to configure GRUB to boot Arch.
    Here is what I added on /boot/grub/menu.lst, in sda5 under Opensuse:
    title Arch Linux  [/boot/vmlinuz-linux]
        root (hd1,0)
        kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sdb1 ro
        initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    In Opensuse, i can check that vmlinux and grub/menu.lst are indeed in /dev/sdb1
    My /etc/fstab is on /dev/sdb2
    =============================== sdb2/etc/fstab: ==========
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system>    <dir>    <type>    <options>    <dump>    <pass>
    tmpfs        /tmp    tmpfs    nodev,nosuid    0    0
    /dev/sda2 /home btrfs defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdb1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdb2 / btrfs defaults 0 1
    /dev/sdb3 /usr btrfs defaults 0 1
    With this parameters, i got an message error when booting Arch:
    Mounting /dev/sdb1 on /new_root failed: no such device.
    Error : failed to mount the real root device.
    So, at busybox prompt, I tried this command line :
    ramfs # mount -t ext2 /dev/sdb1
    Got an error : Can't read /etc/fstab
    I tried too to give a uuid adress to sdb1 in my menu.lst file, but it didn't change anything, so I am sure partition number is correct.
    It seems to me in fact that GRUB can't find fstab.
    Two questions :
    -Would it be better in fact to use only 1 GRUB file for both systems? If yes, shall I keep only the grub config from Opensuse?
    -What do I wrong with Arch booting? Why can't I boot Arch?
    EDIT :1- just realised there is no BOOT flag in my partiton table on /dev/sdb.
                2- root is on /dev/sdb2, not sdb1.
    1-I toggled my first partition bootable using fdisk
    2-changed root to point to /dev/sdb2
    Now booting into Arch login

    It was a very simple problem. I used the wrong uuid for my /
    Correct entry in 40_custom is:
    #!/bin/sh
    exec tail -n +3 $0
    # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
    # menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
    # the 'exec tail' line above.
    menuentry "Arch Linux uuid" {
    insmod part_msdos
    insmod ext2
    search --fs-uuid --no-floppy --set=root 8516fa60-0d45-4f33-b269-817c5290f6cc
    linux /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/9f32e668-2548-4ed4-a10b-3fbea66a6d95 ro vga=775
    initrd /kernel26.img
    Now the boot is working great. Next thing was that my /home and swap was not detected.
    That was simply because /etc/fstab was still using /dev/sda etc naming. changing  that to uuid solved that part as well.
    To use uuid all the way and of cause the correct one solved everything
