[SOLVED] Are Extras via -Syu cached and double downloaded?

This is a real newbie question and I suppose it applies to other distros as well.
I'm in the middle of downloading X11 files as part of my first setup.
Things are pretty slow as I'm on ISDN (128kbits/s) and I'm wondering why I have to download 77mb of files when according to pacman, the system is fully updated (core and extras).
Now I've peeked into my mirror's /extra folder (using another computer) and I can see the files that I'm downloading.
If pacman reckons I'm already up-to-date, then why is it downloading it again?
I'm following the Beginner's Guide and have intitiated 'pacman -S xorg'.
Am I doing something wrong?

Are you sure you are not confusing that the local sync db is up to date, with if the system itself is up to date or not?

As you can see, the local sync db is up to date, but the system itself is not.

[SOLVED] using squid for local cache and configuring firefox

Hi, I have just installed squid following the instructions at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Squid and can run squidclient to retrieve webpages. The headers include
X-Cache: HIT from localhost.localdomain
X-Cache-Lookup: HIT from localhost.localdomain:3128
which I take to mean the cache is working? Next I want firefox to use the proxy, but changing the settings in Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Network/Settings to localhost or 127.0.0.1 and 3128 doesn't work. Firefox can't see the proxy for some reason. I have set
http_access allow all
in the conf for now. How do I get firefox to use squid?

It seems that entering 'localhost' rather than 'http://localhost' was what I needed.

All gmail accounts offline following a 10.9.5 mavericks upgrade today. None of the obvious things fix the issue. Help please. Accounts are ok via browser, ipad and snartphone.

Your issue is very hard to troubleshoot because 10.9.5 and Yosemite preview work fine with my gmail accounts on my Mac.

Try this - connect your dvd writer to your macbook air's usb port. insert any dvd in your external dvd.
click anywhere in your desktop until you see the words finder beside your apple logo - see image below.
from there click on finder - prefernces - general and put at checkmark on CDs, DVDs, and iPods.
exit that one and you should see your DVD ROM drive in your right top side on your screen - if it works that is.

HT201272 What is it with songs that are not from the itunes store, but are coming from cd's and other download sources that all of a sudden do not play on my iphone and have a red stop button in a red round circle around them, behind the title?

Amazing steps you've done so far! The great news is this is very unlikely an issue with your iPhone.
I've run into a similar issue lately as well. I narrowed it down to one song that was causing 30 songs not to sync. I removed the song from the sync list (unchecked it) and all 29 songs were able to sync.
You may be running into a similar issue. This may be a problem with this version of iTunes, an issue with one song or a group of songs; hard to know for sure. It's important to narrow down and isolate the cause. Most imporantly get that music back on there!
The way to narrow down the casue add just a few songs at a time (even 1, just to get that first sync finished). Manually syncing is what you'll need here.
Plug in your iPhone, on the Summary screen (shows a picture of your iPhone, the iOS version, Restore iPhone....; etc). Under the Options area at the bottom choose to Manually Manage Videos and Music then choose Apply in the lower right. The music that's on your iPhone now should be removed from your iPhone now. You're now able to sync music manually.
The link below explains how to drag the songs from the iTunes library on the computer on to your iPhone which will start the sync. Add just one song just to see if you can get 1 of those hundreds of songs on there. If you can, awesome! Keep adding until you find the song or group of songs that are causing this issue.

I've extended my Time Capsule wifi via Airport Express and the download speed is still super slow

I get an average of 80Mbps download speed when close to the Time Capsule. When I got upstairs in the house the download speed drastically drops. So I decided to extend the wifi range using an Airport Express. See image below. I've placed the Express router upstairs in the house and when I stand close to the Express I get a very slow download speed. About 7Mbps. Even slower than when I hadn't "extended" the range. What's going on...?

Well, the first rule that you need to remember is that when you "extend" using wireless.....you will have a drop in the potential speed on the network. So, while you might have more "range" for the network, the network speed will drop. Nothing that you can really do about that other than connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using a wired Ethernet connection. There will be no speed loss over the Ethernet cable, so the Express should deliver approximately the same speed as the Time Capsule.
The next rule is that when a device "extends" using wireless, it can only extend the quality and speed of the signal that it receives. A speed "boost" will not appear.
Try locating the Express about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Anything that you can do to minimize obstructions between the Time Capsule and Express and on to the other area will help.....but you will never get close to the performance of connecting the AirPorts using an wired Ethernet cable.
Unfortunately, Apple really doesn't tell you very clearly, if at all, about important things like the two rules above.

clearing Java cache and cookies is different from clearing IE cache and cookies. Usually when you powercycle your computer it is automatically cleared. To clear manually:
go to start--> settings--> control panel--> double click on Java icon. Click on "delete files" under temporary internet files or 'clear cache' in the 'cache' tab. It depends on which version of java and which OS you use on how these will show up.
If you were having issues with java crashing or making your freezing up, this should resolve the issue. It is strongly suggested that you powercycle the computer as well after clearing the java cache.

Viewing ColdFusion 9 Mac localhost sites that are rerouted via virtual host on VMWare Fusion PC

Hey, I've got some localhost CF9 stuff running on my mac that are rerouted via virtual host and etc/host file to be like local.myprojectname.dev and I'm trying to set things up in VMWare Fusion PC so I can view in a browser. I've gotten as far as being able to add an IP to the PCs host file, and then pull up the root directory of the localhost but can't seem to figure out how to get the virtual host domain to work. This make any sense?

You will need to configure Host header support in your web server software. Both IIS and Apache support Host headers, but they're configured differently of course.
Then, if you want those Host headers to route on your Mac host OS, you'll need to map them in /etc/hosts to your VM's IP address.

Please understand I am a frustrated customer like you, , but the availability of movies that have been shown before is dependant on licencing from the rights owners. Sky quite rightly have to pay the film studios for the ability to show to Sky's customers. As I understand it they purchase the right for a period of time, hence when the right expires then it has to be removed. The costing of the movies does reflect on the anticipated popularity of the programme, hence an older less popular movie might seem expensive but if not many people watch and pay that would be right. The apparent silliness of having movies in the store and on demand, allows those people who do not have a movie subscription to rent the movie on a one off basis. I agree that Sky seem to be licencing some programmes for shorter periods and it really upsets me when movies appear in buy and keep but not available to rent only. I recently queried Sky about Fortitude being available in OnDemand until 2022!, then of course found out that Sky owns the rights of the series. I can only say be careful if you are a movies subscriber and wish to watch a movie, not to select the Sky Store version if it is available in the Movies on Demand section. I recently wanted to watch a film that I found in Sky store at a cost, and just to be sure I searched for it and found it was to be shown on Channel 4 in a few days. I don't think we'll ever understand how such decision are made as to how long they licence movies for and how the charging model works with the film studios. Logically you would think that a smallish fee to have available indefinately and to pay the studio fee based on the number of rentals would be better, but that might be difficult to administer and Sky would have to have extra server storage fees, which they outsource. Thanks for taking the time. Unfortunately no that does not solve it. Same as swipe it will get me there and it will show separate programs spaced out. The issue I am having is that all my open word files are bunched up in a pile on top of each other. I can see the edges of each one but I want them to be separated from each other enough that I can visually identify what file is what.

Outlook 2010 apostrophe, single and double quotes are changes to question mark while sending mails to other internet receipient.

We are using MS Outlook 2010 as our mail client. But we have noticed that whenevr we sent a mail to any other internet mail recipient all the "apostrophe", "single" and "double quotes" have automatically converted to ?. We have
done almost all the workaround found in this site such as
1.New a message and focus on the message window > click File > Options > Mail > Spelling and Autocorrect… > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options… > AutoFormat > clear the box before “Straight quotes” with “smart quotes”
2. Used different encoding. We presently using US-ASCII for outgoing message. etc.
Need your help to sort out these issues urgently.

What is your account type? IMAP, POP or Exchange?
Send an email from the webmail, ask the recipient if this issue persists.
As far as I know, this problem is always related to the encoding for outgoing messages, and here I suggest you try UTF-8:
Go to File -> Options -> Advanced -> International options -> Uncheck "Automatically select encoding for outgoing messages", then select "Unicode (UTF-8)" beside "Preferred encoding for outgoing messages" -> OK.

You cannot use iCloud Storage to suppliment your iPad. They are mainly used to backup iPad.
Free up space on iPad
Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Delete what is not needed to free up space on iPad.

I just got a notification that the phone of somebody I don't want on my imessage account, has been added to my account. how do i double check that they are indeed on my account, and then remove them?

I just got a message on my computer and my phone that an ex girlfriend of mine's phone was just added to my imessage account. For obvious reasons, I'm not okay with that. I just messaged her on facebook and double checked if the name of the phone sent to me is the label of her phone, and it was. She then sent me a screen shot of her phone's imessage settings page though saying that its only connected to her account. I dont believe that she is lying to to me, but I dont believe my computer is either. Is there a way I can double check what devices are linked to my accccount and remove one if need be?

The only "accounts" on iMessage are the accounts you have set up. Open iMessage, from the top toolbar click on Messages>Preferences>Accounts
There you will see what accounts are set up on your iMessage app. If your ex-girlfriend is still set up in your Contacts, you may want to remove her from there.
