Hello. Is there any program/script that will let me pick from list which desktop environment/window manager I will start without need to edit ~/.xinitrc or installing graphical login manager. Thx.

  • CC desktop lists applications as "Up to Date" when not installed

    Operating  Windows 7, 64 bit. I found the recommended fixes at: CC desktop lists applications as "Up to Date" when not installed.
    They were close. I found that steps 1-3 did not work initially. But before running the cleaner;
    1. I uninstalled CC desktop.
    2.  I did a registry clean with CCleaner
    3.  then ran the CC desktop cleaner
    4.  then went back in to the Windows control panel to remove installed programs where I found an icon for Acrobat XI that was the uninstalled program and uninstalled that. Although the
    icon was not the standard icon but a generic one, I still needed to remove it.
    5. Installed the CC desktop.
    That worked.
    Good luck!

    This doesn't work in my case with Windows 8.1

    Starting about a week ago, the synch process gets all the way to the end and I get a message saying:

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I found this on another site:
    1.) Start the Desktop Manager software
    2.) Connect the blackberry using USB Connector
    3.) Select "back-up and restore"
    4.) Select "advanced"
    5.) Look at the list of information showing in the "device memory" window on your computer
    6.) Select "calender all" and DELETE it
    7.) Go back to the main screen and syncronize.
    8.) Everything should work fine!
    In essence it was a corrupt calendar data file on the Blackberry device, apparently.

  • [SOLVED] Plasma Desktop segfaults after recent KDE update to ver. 4.6

    Today after upgrading some amount of packages, including the new KDE 4.6, my Plasma Desktop "segfaults" every single time I login into my account. I tried to send some information regarding this issue using KDE's internal reporting system, but unfortunately it tells me, that those information are irrelevant. Does anyone experience "segfaulting" of the Plasma Desktop after recent KDE upgrade? I'm looking for some help on how to solve this issue, as for the moment my Arch is dead...

    Actually, it is KDE that is giving you trouble, not the OS . When you reach the kdm login screen, don't login. Instead, switch to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1, for example) and login from there. Then, you can see a list with all your plasmoids with
    plasmapkg -l
    If you find the culprit plasmoid, and it is a plasmoid downloaded outside Arch's repos (from kde-look.org, for example), remove it with
    plasmapkg -r plasmoid_name
    If the plasmoid is installed as a package, it is probably better to uninstall/upgrade it using pacman.
    panosk wrote:do you use some extra plasmoid? if so, you need to rebuild them.
    Hi all,
    I have the same problem. I tried using tty, but I got  "cannot access to X server". Than I tried
    Alt+F2 to run Terminal, I used
    plasmapkg -l
    in order to see the list of all the plasmoids, but I couldn't find the "culprit" plasmoid. I don't know if I am doing it right. Here the list of my plasmapkg:
    [encho@x~]$ plasmapkg -l

  • [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects no longer working

    Hello,
    I just did an update, (I didn't think it was a major one, I don't recall seeing graphics update, though I'm not sure how to confirm - is there a way to see recently updated packages in yaourt?) and after a brief issue with powertop that was solved by a restart (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179789 - it may be unrelated though) I found that when I restarted, KWin Crashed, and since then, my desktop effects are not working.
    I have gone to the KDE Desktop Effects Settings Menu, and under the advanced menu, set the compositing type back to OpenGL 3.1, clicked apply, and confirmed that I wanted to try it even though it had evidently crashed Kwin. I then received a message stating "21 desktop effects could not be loaded". When I clicked details, a popup window said:
    "For technical reasons it is not possible to determine all possible error causes.
    Desktop effect system is not running."
    For the record, I am on a Thinkpad X201 with intel graphics.
    Any ideas?

    Some Extra information:
    I just tried a restart, that didn't work.
    I then went back into effect settings, and saw that "enable effects at startup" was not checked. I also saw that under the advanced settings, Qt Graphics system was set to raster. Since I'm not sure which it was supposed to be on originally, but the current configuration wasn't working, I also set that to Native, and then clicked apply. KWin then crashed, here is the output:
    Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Aborted
    Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
    To enable execution of this file add
    add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.19-gdb.py
    line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
    To completely disable this security protection add
    set auto-load safe-path /
    line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
    For more information about this security protection see the
    "Auto-loading safe path" section in the GDB manual. E.g., run from the shell:

    touch creates a file if it doesn't exist. Anyway, I don't believe Conky comes with a default config. Its man page describes everything it does though; just read down the list and add the things you want to see.

  • [Solved] How to list which DNS I am using?

    Edit, solution to find which DNS you are using.  Install:
    sudo pacman -S dnsutils
    To get the "dig" command.  Then use it:
    dig http://www.google.ca
    And at the bottom of the output you will see
    SERVER:
    Which is immediately followed by the DNS you are using.
    Thank you x33a.
    Original post:
    I'm trying to use Google DNS which are 8.8.8.8, and 8.8.4.4.  I have a pure systemd installation and have the dhcpcd service unit active:
    [email protected] loaded active running dhcpcd on eth0
    In my /etc/dhcpcd.conf file I have the following:
    # A sample configuration for dhcpcd.
    # See dhcpcd.conf(5) for details.
    # Inform the DHCP server of our hostname for DDNS.
    hostname
    # To share the DHCP lease across OSX and Windows a ClientID is needed.
    # Enabling this may get a different lease than the kernel DHCP client.
    # Some upstream DHCP servers may also require a ClientID, such as FRITZ!Box.
    #clientid
    # A list of options to request from the DHCP server.
    #option domain_name_servers, domain_name, domain_search, host_name
    option domain_name, domain_search, host_name
    option classless_static_routes
    nooption domain_name_servers
    # Most distributions have NTP support.
    option ntp_servers
    # Respect the network MTU.
    option interface_mtu
    # A ServerID is required by RFC2131.
    require dhcp_server_identifier
    # A hook script is provided to lookup the hostname if not set by the DHCP
    # server, but it should not be run by default.
    nohook resolv.conf
    nohook lookup-hostname
    noipv4ll
    With the only changes being "nooption domain_name_servers" and "nohook resolv.conf".
    Then in my /etc/resolv.conf I have the nameservers:
    # Generated by dhcpcd from eth0
    # /etc/resolv.conf.head can replace this line
    nameserver 8.8.8.8
    nameserver 8.8.4.4
    #nameserver 192.168.0.1
    # /etc/resolv.conf.tail can replace this line
    /etc/resolv.conf has had "chattr +i" done to it to make it immutable from changes.
    I think I have it all set-up correctly, as in it all works, but I do not know of an explicit command to tell me exactly which DNS I am using.
    Last edited by headkase (2012-10-13 14:53:54)

    I switched my nameservers over to OpenDNS: http://www.opendns.com/
    Because they have a test page: http://www.opendns.com/welcome/
    And I got a successful result.  So, to change that all I modified were the nameserver numbers in "/etc/resolv.conf".  So, I assume that I configured "/etc/dhcpcd.conf" correctly.  With the OpenDNS nameservers those now come up as prepopulated in namebench too.  Thanks again, solved.

  • CS6 desktop lists app as "Up to Date" when deleted

    Hi there.
    After installing Illustrator CSS I accidentaly deleted from my MAC the old Illustrator CS6, but when I need to copy and paste vectors into Flash CS6 I get an version error. I need to reinstall Illustrator CS6 now but it appears as “up to date” in my Cloud desktop..
    I did my homework and tried to find a solution before asking:
    I’ve found  this link: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1222611
    This link http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1222590
    This link http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/aam-lists-removed-apps-date.html
    This link http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html.
    None of them worked for me as I followed the instructions: Removed the OPM.db file and relogin into the Creative Cloud desktop application.  Reinstall the Creative Cloud desktop application.
    Run the uninstaller in the Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers folder to remove the program listed as up-to-date. (Illustrator CS6  doesn't appear in that list.)
    I also run the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool for Macintosh, but Illustrator CS6 it's not there either.
    I just need to RE INSTALL Illustrator CS6 after being deleted from my MAC.
    Can someone please give me a solution that is not in any of those links above.
    Thanks!!!

    Carogaspari the information is not being sent to the Creative Cloud desktop application as it would initate the download process.
    As an alternative you can download the CS6 software from http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html.  When you enter the Adobe ID for your Creative Cloud membership it will apply the licensing from your membership.
    I would recommend that you continue to work to resolve the difficulties with your web browsers not being able to send the AAM link information to the Creative Cloud desktop application.  You may want to try temporarily disabling your security software to see if you have the same behavior.  If you do then I would recommend working directly with our support team.  For the best assistance, I recommend our chat support at http://adobe.ly/yxj0t6.  Our chat representatives can provide a personalized experience to resolve the issue you have described.

  • [SOLVED] filesystem package: list by label in /etc/crypttab

    Reading about Persistent Device Naming, using labels in /etc/fstab rather than UUIDs has some advantages.  But /etc/crypttab seems to support only /dev/sdXY and UUID notation.  Since flesystem is listed as an Arch Linux package, is there any chance of adding support for naming devices with labels in /etc/crypttab?
    Last edited by Konkorde (2014-12-15 01:28:42)

    falconindy wrote:You cannot identify an encrypted filesystem by LABEL, because the label itself is a property of the unencrypted filesystem. You're asking to solve a chicken/egg problem.
    I apologize for misspeaking: I want to identify a partition containing an encrypted filesystem by label in /etc/crypttab.  While /dev/disk/sdXY works, /dev/disk/by-label/foo did not work.
    falconindy wrote:You can identify an encrypted filesystem by its PARTLABEL (or PARTUUID), assuming you've partitioned your disks with GPT. I added support, implicitly, for this to /etc/crypttab 2 years ago.
    Thanks Dave: I am using GPT and although I'm new to PARTLABEL, I'll look into it.  Looking at the code you linked, though, I think I probably just want to use the
    if (startswith(p, "LABEL="))
    branch, rather than
    /dev/disk/by-label

    im using openbox and i added my .fehbg to my autostart file in the openbox folder. i had the problem, that some other instance is changing the bnackground after the autostart file, so my preferred picture only stayed for 1 second. for now i solved this by adding a sleep function, so that the execution of ~/.fehbg is after the influence of the other instance. but id like to solve this in a wy, that doesnt make my desktop background jump around at the startup!

  • Desktops listed as Idle when in use - VMware

    I've noticed an issue with a VMware backend where the desktop state is listed as Idle no matter how long the user has been logged in or what the user is actually doing. The power states all are reported correctly. I noticed this with VDI 3.2 and 3.2.1 and with VMware 4.0 and 4.1. This make setting up recycling polices very difficult.
    Is this a known issue or is something not configured correctly?

    There aren't any known issues that I'm aware of.
    The first thing to do is to ensure that you have the latest version ( available with your VDI 3.2.1 download ) of the vda tools installed and running on your guests.
    If you've got the correct tools installed and running and you're still not seeing the desktop state update correctly, take a look in the Event Viewer on the guest to see if there are any errors relating to the vda tools.

  • [Mostly Solved]LXDE - Desktop

    How would I be able to re-arrange desktop icons and add options in the menu?  Currently, desktop icons all stack starting in the top left and are not moveable.  As for the menu, I'm not sure how to edit it. Editing the openbox menu that I have appear on right-click would be an added bonus.  Thanks.

    You can, but it's a bit cumbersome. Copy /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu into ~/.config/menus and edit it. Changing sort order is quite simple, here an example of my Multimedia section:
    <!-- Multimedia -->
    <Menu>
    <Name>Multimedia</Name>
    <Directory>lxde-audio-video.directory</Directory>
    <Include>
    <And>
    <Category>AudioVideo</Category>
    </And>
    </Include>
    <Layout>
    <Merge type="files" />
    <Filename>xmms.desktop</Filename>
    <Filename>mplayer.desktop</Filename>
    <Filename>xine.desktop</Filename>
    </Layout>
    </Menu> <!-- End Multimedia -->
    Note the 'Layout' part. The Multimedia menu will be arranged according to the order in which items are listed here.
    It's not possible to freely arrange desktop icons. It will be in the new version of pcmanfm that's currently being developed.
    Thanks for th help.  Editing the lxde menu doesn't look too much different from the openbox one.
    I heard somewhere that pcmanfm2 was stable enough for testing.  I'm curious to try it out but I'm not sure which is the most up-to-date, the pcmanfm-svn or the git version?

  • [Solved] How to list recently used windows?

    I like the Unity feature where a key binding either opens or focuses an application window. With KDE I can define a keyboard shortcut which, for example, performs
    wmctrl -xa emacs.Emacs || emacs
    However, I'd like it to focus on the last focused window, not the first opened window. Is there a command to list all windows in the order they were recently used? (Clearly the Task Switcher gets this information from somewhere.)

    The command I was looking for is
    xprop -root | grep "^_NET_CLIENT_LIST_STACKING"
    If anyone is interested, this script
    #!/bin/bash
    app=$1
    workspace=$(wmctrl -d | grep '\*' | cut -d ' ' -f1)
    win_list=$(wmctrl -lx | grep $app | grep " $workspace " | awk '{print $1}')
    IDs=$(xprop -root|grep "^_NET_CLIENT_LIST_STACKING" | tr "," " ")
    IDs=(${IDs##*#})
    for (( idx=${#IDs[@]}-1 ; idx>=0 ; idx-- )) ; do
    for i in $win_list; do
    if [ $((i)) = $((IDs[idx])) ]; then
    wmctrl -ia $i
    exit 0
    fi
    done
    done
    exit 1
    in conjunction with the key binding
    the_above_script.sh emacs.Emacs || emacs
    produces the correct Unity behavior. (How to mark this thread solved?)
    EDIT: I modified the script a little bit. It turns out wmctrl and xprop use slightly different formats for displaying hexadecimal numbers.
