[SOLVED] Audio over HDMI stopped working? (Intel/i915)

My audio over HDMI was working fine until recently and I can't figure out what's stopped it from working... My configs haven't changed and aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav gives no errors, but no sound can be heard. There are no errors/messages in dmesg either.
My graphics card uses the Intel i915 chipset (Asus laptop).
Config stuff:
/etc/asound.conf:
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 0
device 3
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 0
device 3
aplay -l:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: MID [HDA Intel MID], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
Subdevices: 1/1

Any ideas?

Yeah I checked and everything is fine... this is really weird!
I've tested audio over HDMI on windows, so I know it's not the cable/HDMI port. I've looked through my pacman.log (I tend to update daily) and the only thing I can see which could affect it is a kernel update and intel-dri. I tried downgrading those and re-tested, to no avail.
I also installed pulseaudio and pulseaudio-alsa before it stopped working. This could have broken it, but I've since uninstalled them and replaced /etc/asound.conf with my original, so that rules those out; unless there is something else that pulse could have broken?
Cheers

    Hello,
    I read elsewhere that for this board, P7NGM-digital, audio over HDMI was not possible ?
    Is it true ?
    As it is not working for me.

    Problem solved. Uninstalled all windows updates and display drivers. Reinstalled windows updates in groups of no more than 5 at a time, restarting after each group. Installed latest Intel display driver, restarted. Works like a charm now.

  • HDMI stopped working on my HD DVR yet AGAIN!

    I've been a FiOS Internet customer for years now and I love it! However, it's been less than a month since I signed up for FiOS TV and I'm already repenting for it. I signed up because of the "superior" HD delivered via Fiber Optics etc. Yet from the first day, the technician warned me that the HDMI will not work because of a BUG in the motorola DVR and there is no solution for it. If it works, great, if not, sorry about your luck!
    Well, day 2 and the HDMI stopped working, green screen on my 61" Panasonic LCD HDTV and all kinds of messages! FiOS TV support were lame, but they came back to replace the HD DVR. I come home to find the technician replace the box with a similar defective piece and hook up the system using component for video and composite for audio! HORRORS! The sound quality had degraded beyond recognition, and the picture quality on my large screen was noticably bad.
    After many hours, and many phone calls with the tech support, I was assured that Verizon/Motorola was releasing a firmware upgrade that would fix the HDMI malfunction. I waited for April 14th, (the upgrade release date) but there was nothing different. Finally, they sent another technician with a "new and improved" box that would work! No such luck. He went on to prove that my HDMI cable that had worked flawlessly with DirecTV for 2 years, was faulty. So he replaced the HDMI cable, got the box to work and was off.
    Well, 2 days later, back to square one. Green screen. HDMI integrity compromised message etc. By now I was so frustrated that I was ready to cancel the stinking "superior" HD from FiOS. More phone calls, no progress. This time round they had the nerve to tell me that my TV was defective and I should contact Panasonic to figure out why HDMI does not work! Talk about shifting blame from this faulty buggy DVR to a TV that has worked flawlessly for years with DirectTV and DVD players etc.
    As I read this forum and others on the net, it seems that this issue has bugged customers since 2005! Pretty much every other DVR out there is either superior or has more hard disk space than the verizon motorola box! Has anyone else here had these issues? I've tried looking at the other threads, but the forum does not allow me to reply to those so I can't find if anyone has actually seen Verizon do anything about this defective DVR nonsense. I feel I've been cheated into paying top dollar for an obsolete piece of junk. Please help if you can. A very frustrated and sitting-on-the-fence customer!

    Also, blaming Mototola for the issue is not the solution to the problem. If Verizon is using Motorola DVR's and charging it's customers for those boxes, then it's Verizon's problem. Verizon should push motorola to get their crap working. I'm not a motorola customer. I'm a FiOS TV customer. As far as I'm concerned it's Verizon that's supplying us defective DVR's and causing us heartburn over the issue. It's not our job to get mororola to fix the DVR, it's Verizon's job to do that.

  • Audio and Video Stops Working

    Hello,
    My audio and video stops working. It starts working again when I reboot. I'll leave the computer for a while, maybe overnight, and when I return the audio and the video on the iMac will not function. When I click Play on iTunes or You Tube nothing happens.
    Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

    Slight update.
    I found this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4872302#4872302
    It gave me some of the links I had been desperately looking for. I have an intel on board GPU and the GTX 675 MX. Because of MSI's bios, there's not a lot I can do in there to ensure that the computer is using the GTX over the Intel. I found some settings which give preferences for which card to use for which programs. PPro had the Nvidia already selected, but I went so far as to completely remove the Intel from all of the settings. Still no change. Today I went as far as to actually disable the intel GPU in the device settings. I rebooted and I wasn't getting anything in PPro. I switched her to software acceleration and it asked me if I wanted to delete the previews. I said yes and now she can see again. Of course I have NO clue yet if this is a permanent change or not. I do want the Hardware Acceleration, so leaving it in Software Mode is not a long term solution. It gets her working tonight, so on that note I'm happy.
    Time will tell if this helps or hinders, but it's some sort of movement.

  • 10.7.1 Audio over HDMI Problem

    Hi All,
    Here is a breif history of my problems with audio over HDMI. From 10.6.3 to 10.6.7 everything was working great. I have a mid 2010 i7 iMac hooked up via HDMI to a Marantz receiver which is in turn hooked up to a Panny TV. Everything worked as it should, audio went out to the receiver and video to the TV. Then the upgrade to 10.6.8 began the trouble. On the Marantz, I have a visual representation of the audio input. The unit showed that the audio was intermittently "flashing out". That was confirmed while listening to the output of the iMac via the Marantz. The image to the Panny was solid. I tried a variety of fixes (grabbing system files from 10.6.7, PRAM reset, etc.) all to no avail. So I reverted back to 10.6.7. Recently I tried again. Upgraded to 10.6.8 and applied the supplimental update that was supposed to fix the audio over HDMI issue. No good there either. I got the same audio dropping out problem. So I figured I'd go all out and try to upgrade to Lion. The upgrade went smoothly but the problem has morphed a bit. Now when the Marantz is on the iMac input, the iMac doesn't output audio or video ver HDMI. The moment I switch to another input on the Marantz (DVD for example) the iMac senses a switch and outputs audio and video. (At least that is what Display and Sound preferences indicate, as I'm not on the correct input on the receiver, I have no way to verify that anything is actually happening). So I'm back to square one. Do I downgrade back to 10.6.7? Any opinions or similar experiences out there? TIA!!

    If anyone's curious, I seemed to have solved the problem the other night. I simply switched the HDMI input on the receiver. Previously it was going into the "game" HDMI input, and I switched it to the "DVD" HDMI input. I'm not really sure why that made a difference. As I mentioned before, all was fine under 10.6.7. Perhaps under 10.6.8 and later, Apple changed the HDCP and the Marantz can only make sense out of it on a "traditional video input" (ie DVD). That's the only explanation I can come up with. Oh well, all's well that end's well I guess.
    Thanks.

  • Z68MA-ED55 (B3) - Realtek HD Audio over HDMI

    Does anyone know if the motherboard Z68MA-ED55 (B3) is able to get HD Audio out from the HDMI connection?
    When I installed the Realtek HD codec I only see listed two digital outs:   optical and atapi.  (which I don't know what atapi is for)
    I think my motherboard need bios updates as mine is in version A1, and the latest A4 seems to fix some audio tables (which I don't know what it means neither..
    Anyone has HD audio over HDMI for this board or advice about what to try?

  • No audio over HDMI

    So, I generally use Windows via Bootcamp on my 2012 Macbook Pro (15"), and I frequently hook it up to my projector and media center via an HDMI cable. Everything was working perfectly up until three days ago, when suddenly the laptop wouldn't send audio over HDMI. On the Windows side, I spent a couple days doing everything the internet said I should try (reinstalling drivers, rolling back drivers and updates, managine audio output devices, etc.) and never got anything. My graphics driver could see the HDMI device and said that there should be an HDMI device on my sound control, but it never showed up.
    I figured it was a problem with Windows, so I jumped over to the Mac side, where I'm running Mavericks. Just like the Windows side, video works flawlessly but there's no audio output. In Preferences, under "Sound" and "Output", I only see the speakers of my laptop and one AirPlay-compatible device that's set up in the room. Headphones work great. But there's no way to send audio over HDMI.
    Just to be safe, I installed a fresh version of Windows and a fresh version of Mavericks, and I'm still not getting anything. Is there something that I'm missing? Because right now it feels like it's a hardware issue, but there's no reason that it should be. And I'm confused about why I still have perfect HDMI video if it is a hardware issue.
    Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    I should mention, by the way, that I ruled out issues with my HDMI cable or other hardware. I have tried multiple cables with the same results, and my roommates can all send audio over HDMI without problems.

    Ok, rc7 is out. Dave Airlie disabled HDMI Audio on rv710,rv730.

          drm/radeon/kms: rs400/480 MC setup is different than r300.
          drm/radeon/kms: fix r300 vram width calculations
    EDIT: Further more, Jerome Glisse talked about future radeon development [1]
    Coming up in the Radeon DRM for the Linux 2.6.34 kernel (or releases thereafter) is support for un-mappable VRAM, support for Evergreen GPUs (Radeon HD 5000 "R800" series), use of the Linux power management API for better suspend-and-resume support, better DRM power management, HDMI audio for R700/800 graphics processors, and improved GPU lock-up recording.
    Therefore, Audio over HDMI is expected for 2.6.34+!

  • HDMI stopped working - "compromised" - happened for the 2nd time

    I have a Motorola set top box Model: QIP7232-P2.  I have an older Sony HDTV (circa 2004) with only one HDMI input.  I have 3 different things that use HDMI including the cable box.  When I got the 3rd, I bought a cheap HDMI switch off ebay and hooked it up to my TV
    Shortly after I got my HDMI switch my previous set top box stopped working (no HDMI video, but had audio via HDMI, and component video still worked) and Verizon support didn't know what to do so they sent me a new box.
    After that I blamed the switch and decided to just swap cables by hand instead.  Today I was swapping cables in and out again and the same thing happened.  An error message came up that said the HDMI was compromised and I should just use component cables.
    I see this thread from 2009 which seems similar: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-TV-Technical-Assistance/HDMI-stopped-working-on-my-HD-DVR-yet-AGAI...
    Are people still having this problem, or is it because I have such an old TV?  Do newer TVs work better?
    Rebooting and resetting the box doesn't seem to get it back into a working state.  Is there any way to get it back to a working state?  Am I stuck using component cables unless/until I replace the box, and then back in the same pit the next time a cable gets pulled out?

    1.   I've used one of the HDMI switches in the past. It was highly rated on Amazon, and wasn't cheap.  It still  caused weird and unpredictable problems.  Unless you want to spend the money for a high quality switch, I would suggest not using them.  You may get lucky, but I don't trust them.
    2.  Turn both the TV and the source off before you remove or insert an HDMI cable.  There are some who say that's not necessary.  I prefer to be safe.

    I figured this out. Shut down for 20 minutes or so. Turned the Macbook on and firewire IP workd.

  • 785GT-E63 - Audio over HDMI

    Hello All,
    I couldn't find this info anywhere, and am hoping that folks here can assist me.
    Does this board support audio over HDMI?
    I would like to use this board in HTPC setup.
    Thank You!!!

    Hello!
    Speaking of info. - Please describe your system in some detail, and do not forget to mention the specs of your PSU. There is a sticker on the PSU box.
    Generally HDMI transports sound, yes.
    Thanks for the reply.
    My set-up is pretty simple.
    Besides the new MB and CPU (which i got at a great deal on $115 for both) all the components are being recycled from other PCs.
    MSI - 785GT-E63
    Athlon II 630
    2x512MB of DDR2 Ram
    Thermaltake TR2 430W PSU
    nMEDIAPC HTPC Case 6000B
    Windows 7 Ultimate
    1.5TB Segate HDD
    2TB Hitachi HDD
    Video capture card (don't know the specs)
    I do not have a dedicated video card, and for my purposes i don't think i need one.
    I would like this HTPC to output audio to a 5.1 channel system powered by Onkyo TX-SR507 Receiver through HDMI
    This will be used to watch 720/1080p video downloads, brows pictures, basic online browsing and maybe convert some of my old family VHS videos.

  • Mac Mini has Distorted audio over HDMI

    My brand new mid-2010 Mac Mini has distorted audio over HDMI. Ideas? Tried multiple connections, devices, but the Mini's audio flattens and distorts high pitch sounds. Really distracting, makes movie watching impossible. Thinking about returning it.

    Update: After a bunch of playing around, it appears that I do, in fact, have audio output. What is missing are the up and down volume chirps. I can do without that.
    Now, anyone know how to fix the Logitec webcam's input volume...?

  • Problems with FLAC 5.1 audio over HDMI and mpv

    The last mpv update (0.7) seems to have changed the way it gets info about the audio playback device.
    Last week, I could play videos with FLAC 5.1 audio over HDMI without any problem. My .asoundrc was just:
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 0
    device 3
    But after the last update, if I try to play a video while the default pcm device is set to HDMI, I get this error:
    mpv: ../audio/chmap_sel.c:89: mp_chmap_sel_add_map: Assertion `s->num_chmaps < (sizeof(s->chmaps) / sizeof((s->chmaps)[0]))' failed.
    Aborted (core dumped)
    I tried downmixing, since the problem seems the number of channels.
    I added this to my .asoundrc:
    pcm.!surround51 {
    type vdownmix
    slave.pcm "default"
    pcm.!surround40 {
    type vdownmix
    slave.pcm "default" {
    Now mpv starts without errors but I hear no sound.
    Everything is fine in mplayer, even without the downmixing in .asoundrc
    What should I add to my .asoundrc so that mpv recognises the playback device correctly?

    So this is merely a mpv problem.
    Good to know, I'll just wait for the update
