[Solved][Awesome]Keyboard don't work at startup

Hello.
I have the problem with awesome wm. I'm using git build 20120516-1 with default rc.lua.
The problem is, when awesome is started, keyboard (modkey + r) is not working. I must click with mouse on the menu, open terminal, or some app from menu, and then keys start working.
Anyone have an idea why this is happening?
Thanks.
EDIT: Changed login manager to slim, and all is working fine.

Well, the 'unplugged' reference was noted earlier and I wasn't sure if you'd get a
better response than a standard suggestion to try the other ideas in this link first
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
before actually performing the SMC, that is a dragnet kind of catch-all, sometimes.
All of my keyboard & mouse units are USB and I've gone as far as supplying the
mouse and other peripherals with a powered USB hub; so power from the Mac
isn't spread too thin. The keyboard is one of the only items that should be attached
to the USB port; as it has to work on startup pre-boot keyboard shortcuts... Such
as SafeBoot, PRAM reset, and others where you need a live keyboard and BT
may not be up to the task of being ready. Three going on four of my Macs have
bluetooth capabilities for those items; but I can't justify the continual upkeep cost.
Spare USB keyboards and a few extra mouse are handy as troubleshooting tools, too.
There are some USB keyboard references among search results in this linked page:
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=Apple+USB+keyboard+troubleshooting
Perhaps the SMC pre-reset suggestions may help resolve the issue, if not, try reset.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • USB mouse and keyboard don't work on HP Pavilion g7 2203sd, Windows 8.1.

It is not possible to use a USB mouse or keyboard on the HP Pavilion g7 2203sd notebook running Windows 8.1.
A wireless mouse used to work (already some time ago), but now wired or wireless mouse and keyboard don't work any more.
I have tried removing USB devices in the Windows Device Manager and let Windows detect them again, but it does not work.
I read somewhere that it might have to do with the xHCI USB controller that is installed.
I tried removing that and connecting the USB mouse but no succes.
I also looked for driver updates or something to disbale in the BIOS (like xHCI), but nothing found for that.
Can anybody help me with this problem.
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

  • Some keys on keyboard don't work

I got a used MacBook air on eBay and I noticed the some keys on the keyboard don't work as intended.
For example, the '1' key does not work at all, the 'p' key would increase the volume, the 'delete' key would enable capslock.
I've tried to do a clean install of Mac OS X but it would still do the same thing.
    Is my logic board broken?
What else can I try to make sure that the keyboard is the problem and not the software?

    Hello:
    Try resetting the PRAM.
By the way, what tests are you referring to?

  • Arrow keys on my wired keyboard don't work.  How do I fix these?

The four (4) arrow keys on my wired keyboard don't work.  How do I fix these?
Sorry, I came from a PC and am very new to the Mac.
    Thanks.

Did you check the long verticle silver button on the left side of the phone?  It is above the + & - Keys.  If it is pushed down, you will have no volume.  THis is a key to quickly shut off the volume if you forgot to trun it down during a meeting, funeral, etc.  If that is okay, go into settings and see if volume is turned on.  "vibrate" is no longer an option by itsself.

  • Keyboard doesn't work at startup, unable to boot.

I accidentally formatted my harddrive and when I restarted the computer the blinking question mark came up.
I tried booting with both "C" and "Opt" key, but no results. Then I tried to boot with a install dvd, nothing.
Then I realized that my keyboard wasn't working during startup, I could see this because the green light didn't turn
on when I pressed Caps, when the green light appears that means that the keyboard is functioning correctly.
In my case the green light doesn't appear until the blinking qestion mark, then it lights green and probably the whole
keyboard now works. But now it's to late to boot with anything right? Please need help as soon as possible.

This requires that you know the password:
Insert the original Mac OS X Install DVD, that came with your computer, into the optical drive of the Mac.
Restart the Mac, press and hold the Option key as soon as you hear the startup tone.
The Firmware Password prompt appears. Type the firmware password for the computer, then click the arrow or press Return. If you typed the firmware password correctly, the screen will change to show available startup disks, including Macintosh HD and the Mac OS X Install DVD.
Click the Mac OS X Install DVD. Then either click the arrow beneath it or press Return. The Mac begins to start up form the disc.
When prompted, choose your language, then either click the arrow or press Return. After a short time, the Install Mac OS X window appears.
In the menu bar, choose Utilities > Firmware Password Utility…. The Firmware Password Utility will load: be patient, as it loads slowly.
In the Firmware Password Utility window, click New.
In the Firmware Password Utility window, deselect Require password to start this computer from another source.
Click OK. The Firmware Password Utility window displays text indicating that the changes will be implemented after a restart.
Click Quit. Focus returns to the Install Mac OS X window.
Quit (Command-Q) the Installer. Choose Restart when prompted.
After restarting, firmware password protetion is disabled. Eject the Mac OS X Install DVDfrom the optical drive.

  • My touchpad and keyboard don't work.

When I turn on my computer, my touchpad and keyboard don't work, and only the touchscreeen seems to function properly. It only turns on after a good ten or fifteen minutes. I have had to use a mouse.

hey maybe this link http://www.ubuntuask.com/q/answers-touc … 89324.html will help you, for me reloading the kernel module for the mouse with "modprobe -r psmouse" and "modprobe psmouse" did the trick.

  • [bug] Numpad keyboard don't work with fractions in Spotlight calculations

In the hopes that the community can shine some light on this problem or possibly come up with an easy fix, I am posting a copy of a bug #7168140 here on the forums.
Numpad keyboard don’t work with fractions in Spotlight calculations
    Summary:
Spotlight cannot perform calculations with fractions where the separator is comma (as it is in Norwegian) instead of the American period.
The Apple aluminum keyboard with numpad in Norwegian locale (Æ, Ø, and Å) have a comma instead of a period on the numpad (this differs from US keyboard with numpads).
    Steps to Reproduce:
(Norwegian bokmål system local and a Norwegian keyboard with numpad required)
    1. Open Spotlight using Command–Space
    2. On the numpad, type: 79,9+56,50
    Expected Results:
    136,40
    Actual Results:
    "No result."
    Screenshots:
    http://yfrog.com/0tshotofspotlightp
    http://yfrog.com/2qapplenorwegiannumpadp
    Notes:
This works as expected in Calculator.app, but not with the Spotlight calculator.

It works in 10.6 Snow Leopard!

  • Thinkpad t42 mouse and keyboard don't work after factory reset

I get to the system preperation tool 2.0 but i cant click or select anything . Same thing happens if i turn the machine on and go into safe mode - the keyboard works to select safe mode but when I get to safe mode they both don't work. they both work if i go into the IBM recovery menu.
    Any help would be appreciated

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi DK,
If you are using the Rescue and Recovery to reload Windows, you should never see the "SysPrep 2.0" appear. Are you using the orignal recovery CDs to reload windows or booting from the F11 partition?  To fix this problem, I would simply start the process of reinstalling Windows again.
Go to this website and follow the guide for Using Rescue and Recovery to Recover your OS
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-70803
If you are still seeing the "System Preparation Tool 2.0" after reloading Windows, do the following:
Step 1: Under the "Options" box, make sure the following are checked:
"Don't reset grace period for activation"
    "Use Mini-Setup
    "Don't regenerate security identifiers"
Step 2: In the drop down menu for "Shutdown mode", change this setting to "Quit"
Step 3: Click the "Reseal" button
This should resolve your issue. Be sure to reload the OS using R&R FIRST before doing the above steps.
    Regards,
    Mark

sorry for this huge post - but i think that's all needed.... so does anybody have a clue?

Thanks Bob for that very fast reply!
But neither "Modifying hal configuration" nor "Using the Desktop Environment settings" (xfce) worked. So I tried the "I don't want this crap, how do I turn it off?" solution and well it works
Maybe I turn it back on in a month or so.. but for now i'm fine with no hot plugging but a working keyboard...
    Thanks and Bye!

  • Wireless Mouse and Keyboard don't work under bootcamp. Any suggestions?

I installed Windows 7 through Boot Camp. Everything works, but my wireless mouse and keyboard. If I add a wired mouse and keyboard, they work. Have reinstalled Bootcamp a few times, but when I try and add the devices. they are seen, but then can't pair.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Keys on my Keyboard don't work?!

Ok, be gentle, i have no clue...
For the past day now, *my full stop*, *question mark-forward slash*, and the *letter 'p'* and also my *arrow button's* , and *Cap's lock* button's... DON'T WORK!!!?
And it's driving me mad! (currently i am copy and pasting them all at the moment-which is rather annoying)
is there any way to reset the keyboard? although any such way to make them work is great...
My warranty has just expired in January, and my nearest apple store is a 2 hour drive away so i extremely grateful of any help anyone has!!
    Thank you!

what you can do is a SMC reset: shut down, pull the battery & power adapter. Hold the button for 20 secs. Install battery & adapter, power up holding Cmd Option P R until you force the machine to chime 3 times total (30-45 secs between chimes).
If this doesn't work or the PRAM can't be reset, they try an external keyboard.
Only try the next step if you are confortable taking the wireless card & a cover off (4 screws): you can try pulling the keyboard, tap on the edge or blow out with air cleaner to see if there's any junk in there. hardest part is dealing with the airport card.

If it's still not working, then it's likely you'll need a new keyboard.

  • Screen & keyboard don't work

    Hi all.
I've got a problem with my eMac. When I try to boot it, i've got a black screen. The keyboard doesn't work, I cannot open the cd-case, e.g.
I hear a sound and then 3 tones at the booting.
There are solutions on the troubleshooting of apple.com, but I can't use them because of my keyboard doesn't work anymore.
    Thanks for your answers.

    Thank you all !
    My computer works again now
But I've goy a last question.
(First, sorry if I don't speak english very well, I do my best (I'm from France)).
I've got 2 slots for RAM in my eMac. But only 1 "piece" of RAM (I don't find the right word XD).
So, I took the RAM and I putted it in the second slot.
This makes me think that the first slot is damaged. Do you think that I can fix that by myself?
Thanks, I'm going back to my english lessons

Which version of OS X are you using?
    • If Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or earlier, go to System Preferences > Universal Access
    • If Lion (10.7.x) or later. go to System preferences > Accessibility
In the Mouse section in the preceding, look for the item Mouse Keys - if that function is "on", turn it off.
