[solved] Back In Time restoration process
Hello,
I have a basic question related to Back In Time backup program and the procedure of the restoration process. As far as I understood, Back In Time allows me to create a one-click snapshot of my entire root system (I only need / and not /home) which can then be restored to give me an exact replicate of the system at a given point in time.
So, let's say I save this snapshot on my external hard disk and my system crashes then, i.e. it no longer boots. Thus I cannot launch Back In Time to restore the snapshot.
How would I proceed in this case?
Is it possible to boot from a live disk, install Back In Time and then launching Back In Time in the live environment to restore my system with one click?

I have paid Bell to unlock my old iphone4 and they have said it is now unlocked. Can I skip the back up and restore process and just buy another carriers sim card from my daugther Kodoo plan, install it and active the iphone4 on itunes account in her name?
thanks
DaveThe process is as follows:
Backup the phone, Erase it, connect to iTunes for the unlock process, then your iProfile can be restored.
You can go ahead and get the SIM, bout you have to Erase the phone and connect to iTunes before it will be unlocked. -

[SOLVED] "back in time" and crond problem
I'm looking into using "back in time" as a backup tool.
For testing, I've created a simple daily rule - just to see how it goes.
crontab entry (created by BIT) is :
@daily nice -n 19 /usr/bin/backintime --backup-job >/dev/null 2>&1
No backup is run. and I'm geting an error in crontab's log :
failed parsing crontab for user el: writing timestamp requires job nice -n 19 /usr/bin/backintime --backup-job >/dev/null 2>&1 to be named
I'm guessing that the crontab entry is somehow wrong.
Any help will be appreciated.

Last edited by ben-arch (2010-07-24 03:29:43)Basicly the initial solution is OK -> http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/18292
Another solution : cron demands full path for executable programs.
so
(a.) @daily nice -n 19 /usr/bin/backintime --backup-job >/dev/null 2>&1
should be replaced with
(b.) @daily /usr/bin/nice -n 19 /usr/bin/backintime --backup-job >/dev/null 2>&1
======
Line (a.) made by 'backintime' worked for me til ~27/5. I found on august that bacups stoped
Each time the frequency of backup is changed in 'backinintime', path is broken (b.) -> (a.).

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. i generally back up and restore my phone every week.. just that i dont have any problem with the network issues. !!
today at 00:46 1st june.. i backed up my iphone and it was perfect...
when i try to restore it.. it is taking 15+ hours .. and that time stays like that for almost 3 hours... it does not happen.
i even called the apple help center. and they said me to install as a new device... and when i said what wil happen to my messages.. they say .. they wont stay.. and wil be deleted.. and all my apps i need to download again..
but earlier i din need to do any of it.!!! it worked really fine .!!!
please help me..!!! i got some important details in this back up.... please help me.!!!Once in a while the restore process seems to mess up. What I don't understand is why you would perform a weekly restore.
At any rate, if you must restore, perform a device reset (settings>general>reset) and then you will have the opportunity to restore from iCloud. Restore a device whenever it no longer works correctly, not just as a matter of maintenance. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. -
I have had to restore my pc to a place back in time when it worked correctly. This meant that iTunes was deleted. I have now downloaded the latest version of iTunes but I cant sync my iPad with it. I get the message that this iPad is synced with another iTunes Library and cant sync to this one. Thankfully all my music library is on iPad. I would be grateful for some help on this issue
Its solved I just restored it to that point

My IPhone 5, was backed up and restored. Music doesn't sync, when reconnecting device each time, it only offers restore or new phone rather than sync option. I have reinstalled ITunes but still this hasn't worked. Can anyone help please?
This problem started last year when ios 8 was released. I think apple is trying to force users to buy music on iTunes store and that's why it's impossible to sync other music and also that's the reason why they haven't solved this serious problem. That's really disappoints me and i'm angry with apple because i have like 10 gb of music in mp3 and i can't sync music from iTunes to my iPhone.

When iOS 6.0 updating my iPhone and connecting my iPhone to iTunes the only option I have, is to restore my iPhone. But ufortunately, I did not back up my iPhone before the updating. Is there any way I can avoid the restoring process?
Once the Device is asking to be Restored with iTunes... it is too late to save anything...
To minimise loss... Connect to iTunes on the computer you Usually Sync with and Restore from the most recent Backup...

my phone has switched off for the second time this week, however when connecting to itunes the restore process wont complete. the error is 2006 however i have tried a number of USB cords, and none seem to be working.
I am in the noerthern [parts of australia and accessing an apple store is not possiable for another month. this is my only soucrce or telecommunication. please helpThis is what it says about error 2006
Error 2000-2009 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, and so on)
If you experience this issue on a Mac, disconnect third-party devices, hubs, spare cables, displays, reset the SMC, and then try to restore. If you are using a Windows computer, remove all USB devices and spare cables other than your keyboard, mouse, and the device, restart the computer, and try to restore. If that does not resolve the issue, try the USB issue-resolution steps and articles listed for Error 1604 above. If the issue persists, it may be related to conflicting security software. If the errors persist on another computer and known-good USB cable, the device may need service. -
hello, i have a first generation ipod and i lost the pin, i followed the instruction to back up and restore factory settings but in the middle of the process an unknown error occurred. how can i get my ipod working again with my backup files. please help
What was the complete wording of the error message? Usually an error number is also given.
Maybe:

- Try another cable
- Also, confirm your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
