So what are your thoughts? Bad Disk? Bad Controller? Bad Mobo?
This particular partition is ext4 on a software RAID-1 of 2 x Seagate 1tb SATA drives.
Same disks, different LVM volume testing with a 1gb file:

I think I may have damaged something on the mobo when I built this computer because I put some wrong RAM in (2.1v RAM but mobo doesn't support RAM that high) and it took me a while to realize. This machine locks up "randomly" (espeically under high disk I/O) and performance of the on-board GB NIC is shocking (2MB/s when everything else on the LAN can get up to 40 - 50MB/s).
I'm going to buy a replacement CPU, mobo and RAM at lunch time

  • HT1782 storage system fail or repair failed

    When I use the disk utility, I click on the first volume which reads ST9500325ASG, it gives me a message "storage system fail or repair failed".
    When I click on the disk below which reads Macintosh HD. It says the volume 2FE etc.....appears to be ok. The volume Macintosh HD appears to be ok.
    Why the error message on the first? Also I did encrypt the volumen.
    I have Mac OSX 10.7.4
    Thank you.

    The top-level item, ST9500325ASG, is the disk. The items below are that disk's volumes/partitions. You'll get different results selecting each. Step one is to boot with your SL install disk, launch Disk Utility, select the disk, and repair it. You might turn off FileVault before proceeding. i don't use it, so can't address any issues with it.

  • Roundcube: connection to storage server failed

    I have done a clean install of my server (10.8.2 and 2.2.1) and have reinstalled Rouncube that was working fine on the old server (10.8.2 and 2.1.1).
    However when I connect to the website I get the error "Connection to storage server failed"
    I think it is failing to connect to the IMAP server but I cannot find anything in the Console or Server logs when this happens.  Any ideas on how to debug?
    I am pretty sure I have followed the identical installation path as before - and have checked and rechecked but there are no obvious differences in the config files.

    Hello,
    It seems that your storage is not accessible from both the nodes. If you want you can follow these steps to configure 10g RAC on VMware.
    Steps to configure Two Node 10 RAC on RHEL-4
    Remark-1: H/W requirement for RAC
    a) 4 Machines
    1. Node1
    2. Node2
    3. storage
    4. Grid Control
    b) 2 switchs
    c) 6 straight cables
    Remark-2: S/W requirement for RAC
    a) 10g cluserware
    b) 10g database
    Both must have the same version like (10.2.0.1.0)
    Remark-3: RPMs requirement for RAC
    a) all 10g rpms (Better to use RHEL-4 and choose everything option to install all the rpms)
    b) 4 new rpms are required for installations
    1. compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.128.i386.rpm
    2. compat-gcc-c++-7.3-2.96.128.i386.rpm
    3. compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.128.i386.rpm
    4. compat-libstdc++-devel-7.3-2.96.128.i386.rpm
    ------------ Start Machine Preparation --------------------

    3. storage configuration
    PART-A Open-filer Set-up
    Install openfiler on a machine (Leave 60GB free space on the hdd)
    a) Login to root user
    b) Start iSCSI target service
    # service iscsi-target start
    # chkconfig –level 345 iscsi-target on
    PART –B Configuring Storage on openfiler
    a) From any client machine open the browser and access openfiler console (446 ports).
    https://192.9.201.182:446/
    b) Open system tab and update the local N/W configuration for both nodes with netmask (255.255.255.255).
    c) From the Volume tab click "create a new physical volume group".
    d) From "block Device managemrnt" click on "(/dev/sda)" option under 'edit disk' option.
    e) Under "Create a partition in /dev/sda" section create physical Volume with full size and then click on 'CREATE'.
    f) Then go to the "Volume Section" on the right hand side tab and then click on "Volume groups"
    g) Then under the "Create a new Volume Group" specify the name of the volume group (ex- racvgrp) and click on the check box and then click on "Add Volume Group".
    h) Then go to the "Volume Section" on the right hand side tab and then click on "Add Volumes" and then specify the Volume name (ex- racvol1) and use all space and specify the "Filesytem/Volume type" as ISCSI and then click on CREATE.
    i) Then go to the "Volume Section" on the right hand side tab and then click on "iSCSI Targets" and then click on ADD button to add your Target IQN.
    j) then goto the 'LUN Mapping" and click on "MAP".
    k) then goto the "Network ACL" and allow both node from there and click on UPDATE.
    Note:- To create multiple volumes with openfiler we need to use Multipathing that is quite complex that’s why here we are going for a single volume. Edit the property of each volume and change access to allow.
    f) install iscsi-initiator rpm on both nodes to acces iscsi disk
    #rpm -ivh iscsi-initiator-utils-----------
    g) Make entry in iscsi.conf file about openfiler on both nodes.
    #vim /etc/iscsi.conf (in RHEL-4)
    and in this file you will get a line "#DiscoveryAddress=192.168.1.2" remove comment and specify your storage ip address here.
    OR
    #vim /etc/iscsi/iscsi.conf (in RHEL-5)
    and in this file you will get a line "#ins.address = 192.168.1.2" remove comment and specify your storage ip address here.
    g) #service iscsi restart (on both nodes)
    h) From both Nodes fire this command to access volume of openfiler-
    # iscsiadm -m discovery -t sendtargets -p 192.2.201.182
    i) #service iscsi restart (on both nodes)
    j) #chkconfig –level 345 iscsi on (on both nodes)
    k) make the partition 3 primary and 1 extended and within extended make 11 logical partition
    A. Prepare partitions
    1. #fdisk /dev/sdb
    :e (extended)
    Part No. 1
    First Cylinder:
    Last Cylinder:
    :p
    :n
    :l
    First Cylinder:
    Last Cylinder: +1024M
    2. Note the /dev/sdb* names.
    3. #partprobe
    4. Login as root user on node2 and run partprobe
    B. On node1 login as root user and create following raw devices
    # raw /dev/raw/raw5 /dev/sdb5
    #raw /dev/raw/taw6 /dev/sdb6
    # raw /dev/raw/raw12 /dev/sdb12
    Run ls –l /dev/sdb* and ls –l /dev/raw/raw* to confirm the above
    -Repeat the same thing on node2
    C. On node1 as root user
    # vi .etc/sysconfig/rawdevices
    /dev/raw/raw5 /dev/sdb5
    /dev/raw/raw6 /dev/sdb6
    /dev/raw/raw7 /dev/sdb7
    /dev/raw/raw8 /dev/sdb8
    /dev/raw/raw9 /dev/sdb9
    /dev/raw/raw10 /dev/sdb10
    /dev/raw/raw11 /dev/sdb11
    /dev/raw/raw12 /dev/sdb12
    /dev/raw/raw13 /dev/sdb13
    /dev/raw/raw14 /dev/sdb14
    /dev/raw/raw15 /dev/sdb15
    D. Restart the raw service (# service rawdevices restart)
    #service rawdevices restart
    Assigning devices:
    /dev/raw/raw5 --> /dev/sdb5
    /dev/raw/raw5: bound to major 8, minor 21
    /dev/raw/raw6 --> /dev/sdb6
    /dev/raw/raw6: bound to major 8, minor 22
    /dev/raw/raw7 --> /dev/sdb7
    /dev/raw/raw7: bound to major 8, minor 23
    /dev/raw/raw8 --> /dev/sdb8
    /dev/raw/raw8: bound to major 8, minor 24
    /dev/raw/raw9 --> /dev/sdb9
    /dev/raw/raw9: bound to major 8, minor 25
    /dev/raw/raw10 --> /dev/sdb10
    /dev/raw/raw10: bound to major 8, minor 26
    /dev/raw/raw11 --> /dev/sdb11
    /dev/raw/raw11: bound to major 8, minor 27
    /dev/raw/raw12 --> /dev/sdb12
    /dev/raw/raw12: bound to major 8, minor 28
    /dev/raw/raw13 --> /dev/sdb13
    /dev/raw/raw13: bound to major 8, minor 29
    /dev/raw/raw14 --> /dev/sdb14
    /dev/raw/raw14: bound to major 8, minor 30
    /dev/raw/raw15 --> /dev/sdb15
    /dev/raw/raw15: bound to major 8, minor 31
    done
    E. Repeat the same thing on node2 also
    F. To make these partitions accessible to oracle user fire these commands from both Nodes.
    # chown –R oracle:oinstall /dev/raw/raw*
    # chmod –R 755 /dev/raw/raw*
    F. To make these partitions accessible after restart make these entry on both nodes
    # vi /etc/rc.local
    Chown –R oracle:oinstall /dev/raw/raw*
    Chmod –R 755 /dev/raw/raw*
    4. SSH configuration (User quivalence)
    On node1:- $ssh-keygen –t rsa
    $ssh-keygen –t dsa
    On node2:- $ssh-keygen –t rsa
    $ssh-keygen –t dsa
    On node1:- $cd .ssh
    $cat *.pub>>node1
    On node2:- $cd .ssh
    $cat *.pub>>node2
    On node1:- $scp node1 node2:/home/oracle/.ssh
    On node2:- $scp node2 node2:/home/oracle/.ssh
    On node1:- $cat node*>>authowized_keys
    On node2:- $cat node*>>authowized_keys
    Now test the ssh configuration from both nodes
    $ vim a.sh
    ssh node1 hostname
    ssh node2 hostname
    ssh node1-priv hostname
    ssh node2-priv hostname
    $ chmod +x a.sh
    $./a.sh
    first time you'll have to give the password then it never ask for password
    5. To run cluster verifier
    On node1 :-$cd /…/stage…/cluster…/cluvfy
    $./runcluvfy stage –pre crsinst –n node1,node2
    First time it will ask for four New RPMs but remember install these rpms by double clicking because of dependancy. So better to install these rpms in this order (rpm-3, rpm-4, rpm-1, rpm-2)
    1. compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.128.i386.rpm
    2. compat-gcc-c++-7.3-2.96.128.i386.rpm
    3. compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.128.i386.rpm
    4. compat-libstdc++-devel-7.3-2.96.128.i386.rpm
    And again run cluvfy and check that "It should given a clean cheat" then start clusterware installation.

  • M5035MFP displays Permanent Storage Write Failed after firmware update to 48.301.7

    After updating the firmware to 48.301.7, I have two M5035MFP machines that are displaying "68 Permanent Storage Write Failed" error messages. The users can press Continue and printing will proceed normally for another 10-50 pages when the message will appear again. The NVRAM and HDD have been reset/intiliased and they have been powered off/on several times.
    This is also occurring on two other different models (6040MFP/9040MFP) which also started showing up after a firmware update about the same time.
    Could this be a failed update? How would I go about downgrading to a previous firmware version?

    Hi Rwelper,
    I want to share with you this solution:
    Please try first to reseat the Formatter/HDD and the memory DIMM and install the correcly then try:
    First it is not adviced to downgrade the firmware at this step, you can try a cold reset and upgrade firmware again.
    here, you need to remove the existent Firmware file on your PC and try to download it again from the HP Website, thus you can instaltly disable the firewalls and the antivirus and do this action.
    NOTE: You can try a new upgrade firmware before you proceed with the Cold reset* of the printer.
    Cold reset (Format disk also can be performed if this don't work): You can check the printer's manual to know how to perform it.
    Please try an NVRAM init or Super NVRAM Init if this don't give a solution.
    All these manipulations you can find in the printer's manual
    Please note also that all these manipulations will delete all the current printer's configuration if it going to be working fine, so you will need to upgrade firmware and set your printer up again.
    ==> There is a need to delete files on the HDD / data on the DIMM, unplug and restart the printer.
    The final solution is to replace the Formatter then the HDD if all these solutions don't bring a result.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>C:\_Ly1\102010_win64_x64_clusterware\clusterware\cluvfy\runcluvfy.bat comp ssa -n rac1,rac2,rac3
    The system cannot find the file specified.

    Shared storage check failed on nodes "rac2,rac1,rac3".
    Verification of shared storage accessibility was unsuccessful on all the nodes.

    I'm not sure that it may result in the Clusterware Installation fail or not.
    Here, I captured the failure screen :

    Please help me out. Thank you!!

    I just ran into this myself while building an enterprise system on Win Server 2003. The answers here did not sit well with me and I needed to be sure of the shared storage prior to proceeding further. Researching Metalink did not uncover any relevant information either. I then opened an SR with Oracle and I did get back a satisfactory response which allowed me to verify my shared storage. The entire text of their solution can be found at http://www.webofwood.com/rac/oracle-response-to-shared-storage-check-failed-on-nodes/. Basically, it is a method of using another utility to identify the storage device names used by Windows and then writing and reading to them from each node to verify each node 'sees' what is written by the other node(s). If this check is successful, you can then proceed.

  • [solved] USB storage devices problem

    Hello everyone. I have MSI Wind U270 and recently I've moved from Ubuntu 11.04 to Arch. I really like Arch so far but I have one quite big problem and I can't find any solution, so I hope someone here could help me.
    After I'd installed Arch, I tried to copy some file from/to USB flash drive. After just few seconds, transfer failed with information about I/O errors and USB flash drive disappeared along with any other USB drives connected at the same time but logitech usb mouse and keyboard continue to work.
    My first thought was that it's simply broken USB drive, but same thing was happening also when I tried to move some files from/to any other USB storage device that I have.
    Here is sample dmesg output after I connect device:

    Next I thought – computer is broken. But it simply couldn't be true because in Ubuntu it's working.
    I wanted to test if USB transfer is working in other distros, so I downloaded few and tried:
    Ubuntu 11.04 – everything is working
    Ubuntu 11.10 – it's not working, exactly same errors as in Arch
    Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 – it's not working
    Mint 11 – it's working
    Mint 12 – it's not working
    So one thing in common that I can think of is fact that USB transfer is working in distros using kernel <3.0 and is broken in those using kernel >=3.0.
    In dmesg output I can see ehci_hcd errors. When I remove this module before moving files, than everything is working fine apart from very slow transfer but it's obvious.
    I really hope that someone will be able to help with my problem.  I don't know if it's some bug or it's just some configuration error.
    EDIT: problems were caused by rts5139 module (card reader). Blacklisting that module solved all the problems.

  • [SOLVED]Gnome 3.2 fail - black screen with cursor on login

    I have tried to get gnome 3.2 to work properly for at couple of hours now..
    I get a black screen with a cursor, when i should get the login screen.
      And it just stays there at least for 10 min (tested)
    To log in i have to restart GDM once or twice..
    And then suddenly i get the login screen.. Sometimes rendered correct, other times it is not, but it works ok...
    Once i have logged in there is no problem at all..
    /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log - first attempt is a fail..

    Stunts wrote:I also had that problem, altough on a different computer. And by themeing not working I mean "I can't change any dconf settings". It was due to ~/.cache being owned by root (go figure).
    Unfortunately this is not the case for me.  I erased the directory, just in case (perhaps this was stupid), but this does not help easier.  Somehow gnome-settings-daemon is not started, or crashes somewhere on the way.  When I start it manually, then it works.
    I have erased the color plugin (/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libcolor.so) as per advice somewhere else on this forum, but this did not help either.
    Most themes don't work on Gnome 3.2 tough due to an API change. You'll just have to wait for the theme authors to update them.
    I am using the default theme (I believe), so I think this is not the reason in my case .
    EDIT: It was not easy to figure out how to start up gnome-settings-daemon manually. So for the record, I found it in /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon (not in my PATH).

  • [SOLVED] conky-lua build fails due to toluapp package issues

    I am trying to install conky-lua from AUR on 64 bit Arch and failing miserably.
    When running the following:
    yaourt -Sy conky-lua
    I get the following error:
    /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/4.4.2/../../../../lib/libtolua++.a(tolua_is.o): relocation R_X86_64_32S against `.rodata.str1.1' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC
    /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu/4.4.2/../../../../lib/libtolua++.a: could not read symbols: Bad value
    collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
    make[1]: *** [libcairo.la] Error 1
    make[1]: Leaving directory `/tmp/yaourt-tmp-mark/aur-conky-lua/conky-lua/src/conky-1.7.2/lua'
    make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
    ==> ERROR: Build Failed.
    Aborting...
    Error: Makepkg was unable to build conky-lua package.
    I have read through what search results I can find on the topic (both here and via google) and have attempted to remedy the situation by adding build options to the toluapp build to provide for the conky-lua build. I have tried this by adding CCFLAGS = '-fPIC' to the scons call in the PKGBUILD file, I have also tried editing the config_linux.py file, which sits along side the main build file, to include the -fPIC switch also, which doesn't work either. i.e. I have this in the config_linux.py now:
    CCFLAGS = ['-O2', '-ansi', '-Wall', '-fPIC']
    Which doesn't work, it results in:
    ==> Validating source files with md5sums...
    tolua++-1.0.93.tar.bz2 ... Passed
    config_linux.py ... FAILED
    ==> ERROR: One or more files did not pass the validity check!
    Error: Makepkg was unable to build toluapp package.
    Can someone help me through a build as I have never come across scons before and maybe I am providing directives to the toluapp build incorrectly? I am still thinking in "make" terms...
    I NEED lua in conky
    Thanks in advance
    Regards,
    Kaivalagi

    I was asked by email on what exactly I did to get conky-lua installed and working on 64bit Arch, so I thought I would post my reply below in case it is of help to anyone else. Cheers
    Run "yaourt -S conky-lua". Amongst other things this will try to install a dependancy which you need to mess about with, the package you need to edit is "toluapp".
    When the "toluapp" package is downloaded by yaourt answer y to the edit question and provide something like gedit or kate as the editor to use
    You'll now see the PKGBUILD file in the editor, this doesn't need editing just yet. But if you open file from the editor you'll see the directory thie PKGBUILD is in, and you want to edit the config_linux.py file you'll see there.
    You should see this line in the config_linux.py file:
    CCFLAGS = ['-O2', '-ansi', '-Wall']
    Change it so it is like this:
    CCFLAGS = ['-O2', '-ansi', '-Wall', '-fPIC']
    Now, back to the PKGBUILD file, you'll see this line:
    md5sums=('100aa6907b8108582080b37d79c0afd7' 'bab107cdd2d18d3453a2344341b77c45')
    These checksums line up with tarball and config_linux.py files, and this will stop you're edit from working if not amended because the .py file isn't what it should be, we changed it. So run md5sum against the .py file and update the second checksum in the line appropriately.
    Carry on with the package installation and conky should have lua support

  • [SOLVED] multipath-tools build fails because file is not a directory

    Hi all,
    I'm trying to build the multipath-tools-git AUR package (I'm playing around with virtualization, and need the kpartx tool). I tried building, and got this output:
    (NOTE: /home/gregory/AUR PACKAGES is symlinked to /mnt/STORAGE/AUR PACKAGES, which shows up in this build. I tried building without using the symlink, and it didn't change anything.)
    [gregory@whitcomb multipath-tools-git]$ makepkg -s

    So that couldn't have been the problem. There doesn't seem to be any indication on the AUR page that someone else ran into this problem. I also checked the upstream site as well as the mailing lists, and didn't see anything resembling my problem.
    Just to make sure that I hadn't downloaded some bad build from git, I also tried installing the multipath-tools package from the AUR, since that should have at least worked for the packager. However, I got the exact same (albeit sooner cause it didn't have to download git sources):

    I'm guessing there's probably some configuration issue with my machine causing this problem, but I have no idea where it would come from. If anybody else has any other ideas on how to proceed, I'd be really appreciative. And if any more information is needed, let me know! Thanks!

    Of course, soon after I post this, I stumble upon the solution. It turns out that having a path with a space in it can cause certain packages to bug out while building. I changed the "AUR Packages" folder to "AUR-packages", and then it built successfully. Guess that's something to look out for.

  • 2012 New Cluster Adding A Storage Pool fails with Error Code 0x8007139F

    Trying to setup a brand new cluster (first node) on Server 2012. Hardware passes cluster validation tests and consists of a dell 2950 with an MD1000 JBOD enclosure configured with a bunch of 7.2K RPM SAS and 15k SAS Drives. There is no RAID card or any other
    storage fabric, just a SAS adapter and an external enclosure.
    I can create a regular storage pool just fine and access it with no issues on the same box when I don't add it to the cluster. However when I try to add it to the cluster I keep getting these errors on adding a disk:
    Error Code: 0x8007139F if I try to add a disk (The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation)
    When adding the Pool I get this error:
    Error Code 0x80070016 The Device Does not recognize the command
    Full Error on adding the pool
    Cluster resource 'Cluster Pool 1' of type 'Storage Pool' in clustered role 'b645f6ed-38e4-11e2-93f4-001517b8960b' failed. The error code was '0x16' ('The device does not recognize the command.').
    Based on the failure policies for the resource and role, the cluster service may try to bring the resource online on this node or move the group to another node of the cluster and then restart it.  Check the resource and group state using Failover Cluster
    Manager or the Get-ClusterResource Windows PowerShell cmdlet.
    if I try to just add the raw disks to the storage -- without using a pool or anything - almost every one of them but one fails with incorrect function except for one (a 7.2K RPM SAS drive). I cannot see any difference between it and the other disks. Any
    ideas? The error codes aren't anything helpful. I would imagine there's something in the drive configuration or hardware I am missing here I just don't know what considering the validation is passing and I am meeting the listed prerequisites.
    If I can provide any more details that would assist please let me know. Kind of at a loss here.

    Hi,
    You mentioned you use Dell MD 1000 as storage, Dell MD 1000 is Direct Attached Storage (DAS)
    Windows Server cluster do support DAS storage, Failover clusters include improvements to the way the cluster communicates with storage, improving the performance of a storage area network (SAN) or direct attached storage (DAS).
    But the Raid controller PERC 5/6 in MD 1000 may not support cluster technology. I did find its official article, but I found its next generation MD 1200 use Raid controller PERC H 800 is still not support cluster technology.
    You may contact Dell to check that.

  • How to solve the "Method invocation failed" error in script?

    Hello,
    I'm trying to modify the script that enumerates all the txt (csv) files on folder and deletes empty columns, but with no luck. The script is working when I execute it on single csv file. But when I put script on loop, it generates errors:
    Method invocation failed because [System.Management.Automation.PSCustomObject] does not contain a method named 'split'.
    At C:\scripts\populate.ps1:25 char:1
    + $b = $line.split(",")
    + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
        + CategoryInfo          : InvalidOperation: (split:String) [], RuntimeException
        + FullyQualifiedErrorId : MethodNotFound
    The script looks the following:
    $files = Get-ChildItem C:\scripts\Results\csv\* -include *.txt
    #Process files by performing a search and replace
    foreach ($infile in $files)
    $infilen = 'C:\scripts\Results\csv\'+[io.path]::GetFileName($infile)
    $infile = import-csv $infilen
    ##remove blank coloumns##
    $cStore = @() # array to store used column numbers
    $rNumber = 0
    foreach ($line in $infile)
    if ($rNumber -eq 0)
    {# ignore header
    else
    $b = $line.split(",")
    $fieldNum = 0
    foreach ($field in $b)
    if ($field -ne '')
    if ($cStore -notcontains $fieldNum) {$cStore += $fieldNum}
    $fieldNum += 1
    $rNumber +=1
    # array $cStore now contains column numbers with values
    $cStore = $cStore | sort
    foreach ($line in $infile)
    $nLine = ""
    $c = $line.split(",")
    foreach ($ar in $cStore)
    $nLine += $c[$ar]+","
    # remove trailing ,
    $nLine = $nLine.Substring(0, $nLine.Length-1)
    $fnFriendly = [io.path]::GetFileNameWithoutExtension($infile)
    $result=$fnFriendly+'cl.txt'
    Write-Output $nLine >> $result
    Also I have found the explanation on this error on this
    link but it seems this is not the case.  Can you help to solve this?
    Thanks!

    You are importing a CSV file which implies that you are creating an object (pscustomobject) and each item in that object is represented by $line. The issue is that this $line has multiple properties (for each column of the CSV) that you need to decide
    on which one to split:
    $c = $line.propertyname.split(",")
    I'm not sure, but it seems that if you are trying to split by a comma, then maybe you are assuming that you did something similar to a
    get-content on the file in which the original approach that you have done would work.

    Can you please provide more details? How exactly did you change the build directory, and to what did you change it to? Also, how can I do the same from within packer, as I'm trying to install lib32-sane from the AUR and it gives the exact same error you got.
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED] external USB HDD fails to install arch w/boot device ERROR

    I've been working on installing arch linux via an external USB harddrive (specifically seagate free agent go 320GB) for 1 week now, and everytime I failed - until TODAY! thankfully I found this post, where user Dieter@be references this link, which displays BUG ID#17231 at the top titled "Can't boot LiveCDs 2009.08 (/dev/archiso doesn't show up)". the bug report states ::
    I can't boot the LiveCDs 2009.08, neither netinstall nor core.
    When it tries to access /dev/archiso it shows these messages:
    :: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
    ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
    You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
    reading further thru this bug report, I found a very insightful post by Heiko Baums (cyberpatrol) where he says the following, and I quote ::
    Problem found. The link /dev/archiso wasn't created.
    After
    ramfs$ cd /dev
    ramfs$ ln -s sr0 archiso
    ramfs$ exit
    it continued booting correctly.
    And sg was also loaded after this. ;-)
    as you see, the bug report was for the CD version, not the USB version - yet, my issue with the USB bootdisk was the same, (no matter which boot disk I tried = netinstall, core, .img, .iso, etc) meaning I got the EXACT same error = "ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ..." ! well, I figured that I'd try one of the new fancy ISOs found @ http://build.archlinux.org/isos/ - specifically I use/used archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso.
    upon running Unetbootin from windows 7, and choose to install the ISO archlinux-2010.03.04-netinstall-x86_64.iso to my first partition on my USB harddrive (that first partition being FAT32, and had already been set as bootable previously), that completed successfully. I rebooted, and choose to boot from USB drive, the ISOlinux bootloader came up as normal, I choose DEFAULT and off it went.... sure enough, it errored out at the same place as listed in the bug report ::
    :: Waiting for boot device ...
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/archiso ...
    ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds ...
    Falling back to interactive prompt
    You can try to fix the problem manually, logout when you are finished
    ramfs$
    this time though, I issued the following 2 commands ::
    ln -s /dev/sdb1 /dev/archiso
    exit
    from there, EVERYTHING worked as it should!
    to recap: the solution for me was create a symbolic link pointing /dev/archiso => to my partition which held the archlinux netinstall (which is where I told Unetbootin to install it to)! done and done. I felt this needed to be posted here, as I could not find this solution after MANY google searches, archlinux wiki searches, forum searches, etc. honestly, I think it would be prudent to have this tidbit of information added to the Install from USB stick archwiki page as a side note to those that may run into this issue.
    this is not the FIRST time I have run into this problem with a USB install of archlinux, but this is the FIRST time I found a fix! thanks to all the great posts I reference here, without this information I dont think I would have been able to install archlinux on my new alienware m11x laptop.
    -peace-
    PS: no amount of rootdelay=XX  nor pmedia=usb  nor usbdelay=XX would work in my above attempts either.

    I thought maybe you meant mount -f vfat /dev/archiso /bootmnt instead. I tried it too, it resulted in a kernel panic.
    What else can I try besides installing from a IDE/SATA CD drive ? Because this issue is NOT solved. At least not for me. Wonder if "archlinux-2010.04.05-netinstall-i686.iso" from the here will solve it (really hope so).
