[solved] - BenQ RL2450HT noisy screen

Just attached a BenQ RL2450HT monitor to my T510 thinpad with VGA cabel.
I've ran `xrandr --auto` and tried to set manually the resolution however in both cases the screen is noisy on dark parts.
I'm using the `extra/xf86-video-nouveau` package.
Should I try other drivers, or could it be some kind of settings issue? Maybe its the screen refresh rate?

The issue was the VGA(dsub) cable itself. When using DVI this is not present anymore.
However if you're thinking about getting this monitor, keep in mind that the special gaming modes of the monitor aren't working properly with `nouveau` neither with `nvidia`.
If you've got trouble first just switch the monitor to "Standard"-mode, then try to look around.

  • How do I solve having a green screen on facebook videos

    I am getting a green screen on all of my facebook videos, all of a sudden, which is a disaster. How do i solve this?

    Green screen is caused by:
    Outdated video drivers
    Corrupted video drivers
    Yes, EVEN IF they're up to dsate, they can be corrupted. Update them from the GPU manufacturer, NOT Windows.

  • [solved] after kernel upgrade screen flickering in gdm

    Hi,
    after the recent kernel-upgrade to 4.0.1-1-ARCH i have an ugly behavior. The bottom half of my screen flickers while on gdm. After login to gnome everything is normal and I have no problems. But in gdm the screen is flickering which is really annoying. I never had this behavior before. My laptop has such an hybrid graphics stack with intel and ati. Here are some logfiles but I cant find anything suspicious. Has anyone any idea what could be the cause of this behavior or which logfile to log into?
    greetings

    It happens to me as well but in xfce4 or openbox rather than on a display manager because I start X from `~/.bash_profile` upon login on tty1. If I logout and login again the problem goes away until I restart the system again.
    EDIT: Upgrading to linux 4.0.5-1 did not solve the issue.

  • [SOLVED]xorg.conf, my screen doesn't fit on my screen

    Hi, I've got everything set up & working well except for my screen. The desktop is too big for the monitor, about a third of it is hidden off the monitor to the bottom right. I've looked at the wiki and tried xrandr, but no dice. I'm using the VESA driver which has always worked ok in other distros. Actually the crunchbang splashscreen was like this, but otherwise it was normal. I tried the openchrome driver, got a blank screen. Searched other BBS too. I don't know the term for this problem to search for. The drivers off the VIA site are for older kernels, I'd rather just get it working with VESA, with a 1Ghz CPU I don't see myself doing much in 3D anyway.
    $ xrandr

    Solved it.
    It was enough to remove the display mode 1280x1024 in all screen sections.

  • [Solved] Gnome: Locking the screen only locks one of two monitors

    Hey guys,
    I'm using Arch for quite a while and I am really happy with it. Today I faced a problem, which no one else seems to have. At least, I wasn't able to find any infos on the net:
    When locking the screen, gnome only locks my primary monitor. I cannot only see the windows on my secondary screen, but also use them with the mouse (but not with the keyboard).
    Does anyone have an idea, how to solve this or how to find out, what could cause the problem?
    I'm using the current versions of Gnome and the nvidia drivers and only one graphics card with one dvi and one hdmi port.
    I happily provide more infos, if needed.
    Thanks for any tips!

    Hi again,
    there are to bug-reports (one at Arch's package, one upstream) for this issue, but no solution patch so far:
    https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30547?project=1&cat[0]=2&string=gnome-screensaver
    https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=679441
    Since this was introduced with the current version of gnome-screensaver and since this is a crucial feature (at least for me at work) I did the following to get it working again, until there is fix:
    Download and install the previous version of gnome-screensaver (here: x86_64):
    wget "http://schlunix.org/archlinux/extra/os/x86_64/gnome-screensaver-3.4.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz"
    pacman -U gnome-screensaver-3.4.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    Prevent pacman from upgrading gnome-screensaver, with adding the following to /etc/pacman.conf:
    IgnorePkg = gnome-screensaver
    When there is a fix, just remove "gnome-screensaver" from "IgnorePkg" and update your system as usual.

  • [Solved] On open lid screen flashes desktop then blanks

    Hello fellow archers, I've been dealing with the following nagging issue:
    On open lid my desktop flashes for a few brief seconds then the screen goes blank. I have to type or use the touchpad to get my desktop again.
    I believe something in Gnome settings is the origin of this problem because:
    - I have 2 users running Gnome and on the second user I do not have this issue.
    - On the user with this issues by stopping gnome-settings-daemon momentarily the issues is resolved.
    gnome-settings-daemon depends on gsettings-desktop-schemas which leads me to believe maybe some setting got mucked up somehow.
    I recently updated Gnome so there may be some connection to that.
    Anywho, any help is appreciate
    Cheers

    I think I've solved the issue for now, by putting
    the pm-suspend command in the lid event in the /etc/acpi/handler.sh
    and added the laptop monitor off "script" in /etc/acpi/actions/lm_lid.sh as described in
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ac … _Power_Off
    Seems to work.

  • [SOLVED] painting on my screen temporarily

    I would like to know if there is a program out there that allows me to "freeze" my display and paint on top of it.
    Concrete example: I am trying to solve a quiz online, that looks like this:
    http://i.imgur.com/zMWkM.jpg
    So I want to paint over some tuples in the table to eliminate some, as if I was using "strike-through" on paper. That way I don't have to use a pen and paper to copy the example and work it out on paper...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    EDIT: Found a program called gromit-mpx in aur which does what I need. Since I am using F9 already for tilda, I am starting it with the following line:
    gromit-mpx --key F7
    For those that want to see the result:

    If you're using compiz, there is the paint on screen plugin. Looks like gromit does the job as well.

  • [SOLVED] YASBI (yet another screen brightness issue)

    i feel silly posting this, as there seems to be a lot of documentation about this, but i'm kind of baffled.  if i run
    echo "5" > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    as root, everything works nicely, my screen turns it's brightness down to half-way (max brightness is 10).
    if i run the same command as sudo, i get a permissions error.  my final goal is to bind this to a key in openbox, but first i need to figure out what i'm doing wrong.  do i need to be part of a certain group?  do i need to edit my sudoers file?
    thanks in advance.

    i have solved this, and am posting how here for anyone else who might come across this in a search. this is what i came up with:
    added the following to my /etc/rc.local:
    chgrp users /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness && chmod g=+rw /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    then i came across this script on another forum post, and saved it to /usr/sbin/brightness, made it executable and chgrp users:
    #!/bin/bash
    file="/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness"
    level=$(cat $file)
    if [[ "$#" -eq 0 ]]; then
    cat $file
    elif [[ "$1" = "-" ]]; then
    echo $(( level - 1 )) > $file
    elif [[ "$1" = "+" ]]; then
    echo $(( level + 1 )) > $file
    fi
    then in my ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml i added the following code to bind the commands to my Super+Up and Super+Down :
    <keybind key="W-Up">
    <action name="Execute">
    <command>brightness +</command>
    </action>
    </keybind>
    <keybind key="W-Down">
    <action name="Execute">
    <command>brightness -</command>
    </action>
    </keybind>

  • [solved] Xorg update makes screen become black for short time now a...

    Hello,
    when using the new xorg-server package, my screen becomes black for an instant every once in a while, needing some time to switch back on (perhaps a backlight problem?). This appears to be partially induced by fast mousewheel movements, but is not dependent on. The worst situations seem to be a XFCE-terminal producing lots of output or scrolling in Opera. Then the interrupts become inacceptable (about 1:1 on:off-ratio). The problem occured for the first time some weeks ago (when the xorg-server update was moved to current). In the meantime I have downgraded back to the previous versions of xorg-server and xf86-drivers, the problems have gone.
    I use xf86-video-radeon open-source driver with an Radeon 9200, AIGLX, nothing like beryl or compiz but the default XFCE desktop without compositing. Removing the xorg.conf or using the vga or vesa drivers doesn't solve the problem. My system has the most current packages installed (nothing from testing). Frequencies and resolution should be all right (the xorg.conf worked with the old packages).
    Another question: Where can I see which xorg-version is distributed in the repo? It should be something like 7.4 but the only package I have installed is xorg-server with version 1.2.0-5.
    If you need more information, please ask me! Thank you for your answers.
    fi-dschi
    EDIT: Now I have the xorg-server from testing installed. As I deactivated the hSync-settings in xorg.conf I now have much less trouble. Scrolling and quick movements of windows etc. now don't cause problems. Yet the screen has just become black again, without any apparent reason.
    Last edited by fi-dschi (2008-01-19 12:47:14)

    I have good news: The problem now does hardly ever reappear. I have installed the xorg-server from testing and now my screen becomes black about once a day what is perfectly acceptable. As I don't know whether tis is healthful for my screen I am still interested in a clean solution. So please post your ideas if you know what the reason could be.
    The german forums have given me some replies which, as yet, don't include an explanation for my monitors' interruptions. The thread can be found here:

  • How can I solve grey start-up screen problem?

    Hello all,
    my seemingly healthy mid-2010 Macbook running the latest version of OS 10.6 has suddenly become unresponsive and won't boot up past the initial grey screen.  Below is a list of things that I thought were relevant:
    Over the last few months there have been frequent (a few times a week when connecting via USB internet dongle) kernel panics associated with Telstra Sierra AirCard 320U (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2776956?tstart=0 ; http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/os-x-operating-system/210007-continued-kernel-p anics-can-damage-my-machine.html )
    Not sure if related, as this happened when not connected (but hadn’t signed out of USB modem account, which other users say could affect things).
    Then yesterday, having removed dongle and connected to internet via ethernet (routed through modem to AirPort): -
    Machine was really slow – almost freezing, then froze up.
    Hard re-boot.
    Got folder icon with question mark.
    Did another hard re-boot and got the grey screen of death.
    Tried re-booting with install disk.
    Didn’t get far until I re-set SRM and PRAM, but once booted up and using disk utilities from install disk the hard drive wasn’t even showing.  In Terminal it was listed as five disks of 500GB (approx.), the size of my hard drive, but couldn’t get to mount from Terminal.
    On another re-boot (with option key) to choose start-up disk, the HD appeared, but as soon as I clicked on it, it ‘puffed’ (like when you remove an icon from the dock) away.
    I read on a forum that a loose connection could be the fault (I just had a battery replaced at the Apple Store, so thought it could have been nudged then), so I removed and re-installed the hard drive.
    This seemed to fix it and I booted up from the hard drive, logged in and everything seemed to be fine.  I did a backup (previous was two days ago, but good to not lose anything!) to Time Machine, ran Disk Utility, verified disk, repaired permissions, looked at the SMART status and everything was fine.
    Then the machine slowed down again.  I opened Disk Utility again and the HD wasn’t even listed and slowly the machine froze again and now won't boot up even from the install disk.  Just sitting on the grey screen of death. Have reset SMC and PRAM but no response.
    Any suggestions very welcome!
    Also, any insights into whether this is a HD problem or something else.  I live very remotely, so taking it in for service is not feasible, due to both time, but mostly cost.  If, despite the apparent OK SMART status and Disk Utility verification it is definitely the HD I can easily get another - if it's something else, well it might be time to buy a new mac.

    After having no luck, I later tried removing and reinstalling HD, but that was no help.  I then re-installed an old failed HD and was able to log in using Installation disk (but not prompt hardware test by holding D key at startup).  Disk utility showed no HD (which may be expected as it was a failed drive).  I then restarted again with no problem.
    I powered down and returned the current HD and was able to start holding down C to boot from disk.  Once I was in, Disk Utility showed my HD correctly and I performed a Verify on the disk and ‘Macintosh HD’ as well as repaired permissions on both and the result for all was a pass.
    I then used the Startup tool to select the HD as the startup disk and this appeared to be successful.  At the login screen I re-started again, this time in Safe Mode, which was also successful.  I then saved some media files that are excluded from Time Machine backup and did a Time Machine backup to two separate disks.  When I tried to check the time machine history of one of the disks (‘enter time machine’) the machine froze again.  I selected restart from the options after pressing the power button, then restarted in Safe mode.  Then I created a bootable clone on an external hard drive – just to be sure!
    After updating software I then re-booted and ran Apple Hardware Test (extended) off the Installation disk, which ran for 2 hours and found no problems.
    I am going to run a test on the RAM (even though I'm pretty sure the hardware test does that) - any other thoughts still very welcome!
    I think the next step is to erase the disk and reinstall the operating system.  I'm assuming something got corrupted there ...
    Will also go through these steps - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353

  • [SOLVED] Zenbook UX32VD black screen on boot with drivers (Intel).

    Helluw!
    So i have done a clean reinstall after this problem first occurd to try and isolate the problem. During boot you see that grub loads the modules and every goes black. After 2 seconds the backlight is turned on and there is nothing happening, to make sure that is the case, it have been running for 20 min with no reaction.
    Packages installed (that should matter):
    inteli-dri
    xf86-video-intel
    gnome
    gdm
    xorg-server
    To boot i am atm appending nomodeset so i can access a tty. This is removed every time i try boot, and replies with "no screen found" when added (as expected).
    There are no added configs in xorg, and no other videodrivers have been installed. The xorg dosnt reply with any errors as i can see.

    As documented on the nvidia forums and several topics on this forum; Kernel 3.10-3.11 is breaking nVidia graphics.
    Zenbook's got a workaround by enabling "Fast CMS" in bios.

  • [SOLVED] Kill the Gnome screen curtain once and for all

    Author edit: you can see the fix that finally worked in post https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1351594
    I was inadvertently locked out of my own computer for about 10 minutes until I happened to stumble on the "Ctl + L" trick to bring up the login in screen.  How can I remove or disable the gnome shell screen lock for good.
    I already tried:
    setting the "screen lock" to OFF under gnome setting > Privacy (gnome 3.10 appears to ignore this, or "screen lock" refers to something else)
    the Disable Screen Shield extension - this has  not been updated to gnome 3.10
    Last edited by marko2010 (2013-11-19 18:04:06)

    I think I finally found a way to disable the inactivity curtain in gnome 3.10. Launch dconf-editor then drill down org > gnome > desktop> session. Find the key for idle-delay and change it's value to 0 .
    Or  you can do it in once step by running the command:
    gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session idle-delay 0
    Note you would think that going into the gnome control center and moving Privacy > Screen Lock to "OFF" would completely disable the screen curtain, but this never worked for me. The curtain would still come up after periods of inactivity, but would no longer ask for a password. Adding the fix above, completely gets rid of this pesky thing.

  • [SOLVED] fglrx + xorg = black screen / freeze

    Hi,
    I simply can't run
    startx
    When I try, everything freezes, screen goes blank.
    I've done clean install, and done just this:
    # pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils xterm
    # pacman -S catalyst catalyst-utils /* added catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo in pacman.conf */
    # aticonfig --initial
    # reboot
    # startx
    --> FREEZE
    I'm confused as this worked on my other machine. I have empty Xorg.log file and I've tried
    aticonfig --acpi-services=off
    as advised on wiki - but nothing changed.
    Please help

    Thanks for the reply!
    No, keyboard indicators are not blinking (no num lock light or anything).
    Of course, we are talking about /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
    I've realized that it is even not created now.
    (I've tried with empty xorg.conf, just to get some log errors, and after I returned fglrx version of xorg.conf and run startx log was empty)
    I haven't made any ~/.xinitrc (I think that it should run default one from /etc/X11, right?)
    I've tried with ~/.xinitrc that has just "exec xterm"
    nothing worked...

  • [SOLVED] Google Earth - grey screen

    More GE problems.
    Now, when I start GE, I get nothing displayed.  Just a blank, black screen where the Earth image should be and a blank, grey screen when I zoom in.  (Just to make it clear, all the menus, sidebars etc are displayed correctly, it's just the Earth display that's affected.)
    Googling the issue shows that a number of people are experiencing this problem with Intel graphics drivers, but I have nvidia (nvidia-304xx driver) and the only suggested fix, to untick 'atmosphere' in the View menu, does not work.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do?
    Many thanks,
    David Shaw

    I experience the same problem with Google earth 7. I have "fixed" it by installing google-earth6 (available from the AUR).

  • [Solved] GS60 - Windows 8 - Screen Goes Blank But Sound Continues

    Typically about 1-2 seconds after the windows signup screen, the screen goes blank but you can still hear beeps of the pc loading. Then, only sometimes, white lines flash horizontally across the screen.  My only choice at this point is to do a hard shutdown. The "MSI" logo pops up on reboot and process continues. Eventually (like after 5-10 mins. and several restarts/shutdowns from the windows login screen), the screen will work again. The screen will continue working for hours uninterrupted but may encounter the same issue. Then, it takes 5-10 mins to get the screen operational again!
    Bios is latest version .106

    Hey lbman14,
    Try updating your VBIOS if yours are not 80.04.EF.00.21, and use the latest graphics driver from MSI website first.
