[solved] beryl messes up my windows

I use beryl with "AIGLX' and use --use-copy parameter at startup, because otherwise I get a White Cube and can't see anything. But now beryl messes up my application windows. On starting a new application everything is fine, but when moving the window or typing something, for example on an xterm, the application becomes somewhat 'distorted' and it's not possible to read something there anymore. What can I do?
Btw, my 'Device' is "Intel i810 (generic)" and I configured for AIGLX according to the Arch beryl wiki. Maybe anyone can tell me how I might get the direct rendering path working as well. Probably this might solve the other problem, too.

I got it running with the help of another thread here. Seems, that it's necessary to intall 'beryl-setting' package, too, for beryl to run correctly. Now I do not have to use 'copy' anymore and windows do not get messed up. Everything's just fine.

  • [solved] Beryl messes up my screen - I don't know why!

    I tried to configure beryl on my new Thinkpad X60 (which has an Intel GMA950). I use the very same settings that worked on my old notebook, too (it had an i810 graphics device, so I use the same driver), AIGLX, to be more precise.
    I can start Beryl with 'beryl-manager', that's no problem and it almost works as it's supposed to be. But if I move windows, occasionally their content get's messed up and is unreadable. If I use the manager to switch back to metacity everything looks neat again.
    Any ideas where I might have failed in configuring correctly?

    Ok, it's solved... The problem was I didn't get it working at all on first tries. So I copied all the settings from my old laptop, which made it working but caused the mess. Now, in "Advanced Beryl Settings" I switched everything back to "Automatic" and it works out better... but: I still got that mess beneath the active window. Switching of "blur" in 'Beryl Settings Manager' did the job, there. So everything is neat again!

    can someone help me with this issue?

    Two suggestions:  the first one is a workaround. You just have to drill down your program file tree to Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer and find the .exe file - the one specifically for Organizer, not Elements.  Make a shortcut to that file on your desktop and it will open Organizer. The second suggestion resolved the problem altogether for me. I actually called Dell and after working with several different techs over several different days, I talked to a tech in premium support who was excellent. I discovered from them that it is actually a problem with the windows system files. I have 8.1.  I went through a "refresh" on my computer which rebuilt all the files. Then reinstalled Adobe as well as my other programs again and Photoshop Elements Organizer works from the standard desktop shortcut.

    i solved it downgrading emerald and emerald-themes to version 0.2.1
    it was a problem with the version of beryl-plugin that doesn't support the last version of emerald

    Edit: Btw, you should have left this thread as [SOLVED] and created a new thread for the new problem. Please read: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … ow_to_Post
    Edit2: This problem might not have anything to do with mouse sensitivity and may just be a bug in Wine or the Game, however it's worth a try to eliminate the possibility. (Wine had a similar issue with CS:S and erratic mouse movement (just jumpy) and was patched (wine 1.3.35 to 1.3.36 iirc))
    Righto,
    So your mouse is either "PS/2 Generic Mouse" or "OM". Whichever it is we'll only be paying attention to the id=#.
    Before I start, I'll assume that you've turned off mouse acceleration, which is ideal for games. You also might have to tweak these settings to find a happy medium.
    I'm also assuming that device 16 is your mouse (PS/2 Generic Mouse).
    My idea is to temporarily lower the mouse sensitivity when you launch the game, and then return it to default when you close the game.
    Firstly list current properties for your mouse, make note of the numbers in the parentheses. Most of the options are self explanatory.
    $ xinput --list-props 16
    [snip]
    Device Accel Profile (252): 0 #Change this to "-1" to completely disable acceleration
    Device Accel Constant Deceleration (253): 1.000000
    Device Accel Adaptive Deceleration (254): 1.000000
    Device Accel Velocity Scaling (255): 10.000000
    [snip]
    Disable mouse acceleration (I have this set by default)
    $ xinput --set-prop 16 "Device Accel Profile" -1
    # Or, if you paid attention to the number in parentheses, you can use:
    $ xinput --set-prop 16 252 -1 # less typing
    To lower your mouse sensitivity, simply do
    $ xinput --set-prop 16 "Device Accel Constant Deceleration" 4 #The higher the slower
    # Or
    $ xinput --set-prop 16 253 4
    Then you simply use a bit of shell script to launch your game (e.g.
    # cd to dir of game's .exe | lower mouse sens | launch game | restore mouse sens to default
    cd ~/.wine_rack/witcher_2/drive_c/The\ Witcher\ 2/bin; xinput --set-prop 16 253 4; WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_rack/witcher_2 WINEDEBUG=-all wine witcher2.exe; xinput --set-prop 16 253 1
    This solution is a little hacky but it should work
    You can probably find out more on your own from here on out, good luck with it.
    (My personal solution to mouse issues was to just disable mouse acceleration, it's fine for me.)
    I actually thought about creating a new thread but momentarily felt I had to write here itself because everything regarding troubleshooting witcher 2 will be here.
    your solution did decrease the mouse sensitivity but, the mouse continues to be jumpy in the game while moving it from left to right or top to bottom.
    Witcher 2 has a mouse emulator built in and some ppl(even windows users) have experienced this problem but for most of them, editing this file called 'user.ini' and setting smoothness = 0 worked. But not for me. Strangely many ppl playing witcher 2 in wine didn't experience this problem at all.
    I think this can be a bug in witcher 2 which can make only some models of mice jumpy.
    I also have an 'enter gamepad' and the game doesn't support it but one joystick works very smoothly (unlike the mouse) so presently I'm searching online for ways to get the gamepad working with the game

  • [SOLVED!] KDE 4.11 - Window Manager seems not to be running?

    Greetings,
    I still seem unable to fix the fact that systemsettings will run. However it will run if you do kdesu systemsettings.
    Doing so I started checking around in it and thought I'd look at the desktop effects, when I was greeted with this:
    So, I am guessing that the window borders and buttons are a figment of my imagination....
    This is after me pretty much starting over with KDE, removing the .kde and .kde4 folders.
    Help?
    Edit: That pic seems to not link right. Yay. Basically it says that effects can not be activated or whatever because a window manager seems not to be running. The irony of it is you can see the fact that there are window borders and buttons and such, evidence of a WM...
    I wonder if there is something here that is related to me not being able to run systemsettings... yet systemsettings will run fine in any other environment - including Gnome Shell.
    Another thing, KDE 4.11 ran great in testing and kde_unstable. Once it went to extra, things happened. I find that odd. Maybe something is missing on my end that most archers already have?
    Edit2: fixed image link

    No omeringen, Nvidia user.
    I can try again Thaodan since I've had some updates come through (and weeded out some dot files). Last time I tried I saw OpenGL 2 selected. Trying to change to 3 or anything else also got the screenshot in my OP.
    I'll log into KDE and see if it still does the same, after a brief check for last minute updates.
    EDIT: OK, so I can mark this as solved. I found an odd dot file, who's name excapes me but deals with kde sessions, just sitting around in the home folder. Once I deleted it and restarted, I found that not only System Settings finally ran again as a user, but I could also change and apply desktop effects. Peculiar. I thought that maybe it was a dot file that was causing the problem, that wasn't in the .kde or .kde4 folder. It just took finding it and removing it.
    I wish I knew more to tell, but this at least solves my issue, and the issue with the non-running-as-user system settings I had posted in another thread (thinking that they were separate events. Thanks again for all your help guys!

  • [SOLVED] help needed with active window script

    I am trying to receive the current window from a script. it works fine, but when no window is open i get an error.
    i am using this command:
    xprop -id $(xprop -root 32x '\t$0' _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW | cut -f 2) _NET_WM_NAME | cut -d '=' -f 2 | cut -b 1-2 --complement | rev | cut -c 2- | rev
    error message is "Invalid Window id format: 0x0"
    I tried working around this by using this script:
    #!/bin/bash
    title_window () {
    xprop -id $(xprop -root 32x '\t$0' _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW | cut -f 2) _NET_WM_NAME | cut -d '=' -f 2 | cut -b 1-2 --complement | rev | cut -c 2- | rev
    title_root () {
    title_window | grep 0x0
    if [[ -z title_root ]]
    then
    title_window
    else
    echo "Desktop"
    fi
    But now it shows "Desktop" for every window.

    When I saw this, I decided to save the diffrent files that were conflicting, copy them in a zip file and run the following command
    sudo pacman -Syuf
    After a reboot, the language turned from French to English. Now that the system is in english there are some french characters that don't display correctly. But when I went on the ArchLinux website, I saw that we had to manually delete the files before updating (that's when I felt stupid a little bit..).
    But now that this is done, there may be other things buggy . First of all, I want to fix the language issue (it may be has to do with the fact that archlinux moved from initscript to systemd?). Then if anyone has any idea about what could have been messed up, let me know (and if you have a fix, I'd love to be whistled about that ).

    I think there's nothing new for me in what Tom posted. I already had the configuration set up in /etc/locale.conf.
    LANG=fr_CA.UTF-8
    LC_TIME=fr_CA.UTF-8
    However I noticed that when i shutdown my pc, some daemons fail to stop/execute themselves:

    This option should be used with care, ideally not at all.
    You just forced 80 updates at once. Don't do that. The fontconfig update has it's own news post: News: Fontconfig 2.10.1 update - manual intervention required.
    You should have read that.
    Hopefully Tom's post will help you fix your language problem. In the future, don't force anything unless you're explicitly told to via news post.
    I realize I shouldn't have done this, but it's by making errors you learn, isn't it? Now, Tom's post doesn't look useful since it seems it doesn't differ from my own configuration.
    There's actually a person who had a similar problem (I think) as we can see in Tom's post comments since he has this too:
    LANG=
    LC_CTYPE="POSIX"
    LC_NUMERIC="POSIX"
    LC_TIME="POSIX"
    LC_COLLATE="POSIX"
    LC_MONETARY="POSIX"
    LC_MESSAGES="POSIX"
    LC_PAPER="POSIX"
    LC_NAME="POSIX"
    LC_ADDRESS="POSIX"
    LC_TELEPHONE="POSIX"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="POSIX"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="POSIX"
    LC_ALL=
    But his system is configured with systemd when my configuration is with initscripts... So the problem isn't solved yet!

  • I believe I found the fix solving home sharing issues with Windows 7

    I was having a problem with my Windows 7 PC while trying to connect iTunes home sharing and my Apple TV.  While speaking to Apple support, the tech told me that home sharing uses port 3689.  I searched the web and found this link explaining how to open a port on your PC.  The issue seems to be with Windows firewall, or the anti virus software controlling the Windows firewall.  I use Norton anti virus so when I opened the Windows firewall selection in the control panel, the Norton window opened and the fix was identical to the one shown in this link.  http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-7/open-a-port-in-windows-7s-firewall/
    Follow the instructions on the page and for step #7, enter 3689.  When you get to step #10, I typed in "Apple TV Home Sharing" so I could identify the port later on.  I made these changes, rebooted the computer, started iTunes, turned on the Apple TV and everything worked.  Try it and this should solve what seems to be a common problem.

    Solved - at least all good so far.
    I had to add rules to my firewall software (Symantec Endpoint Protection) for Bonjour (UDP 5353) and DAAP (TCP 3689).  Once I did that, the other librares were shown in SHARING and the Apple TV reliably connects.
    What I don't understand was why it worked at all without the rules in place.

  • [Solved] No sound from VM (Windows 7) on qemu with virt-manager

    I posted this in Newbie corner,
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=176131
    but let me re-post here becase it is about sound matter.
    I have installed Windows 7 (64bit) on qemu with virt-manager.
    It seems that audio works fine inside the guest os, but I can hear no sound.

    I did as follow before launch the VM, but it doesn't solve the problem.

    What shoud I check and do?
    Followings are some additional information:
    * If I put the same command above
    % /usr/sbin/qemu-system-x86_64 -name win7qemu002...
    It produces error.

    Self reply.
    Finally, I got to hear sound from windows 7 as guest OS.
    I gave up to use virt-manager and launches OS image by command line
    like follows.
    % export QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=alsa
    % qemu-system-x86_64 /mnt/win/win7qemu002 -cpu kvm64,+nx -enable-kvm -m 1536 -soundhw hda -usb
    Then, sounds works good.
    # However, the quality is bad because of heavy CPU load.
    Virt-manager may make things complex..
    Sorry for the duplicated post.

  • [Solved]Slow samba mount of Windows 8

    I'm trying to mount a samba share of a windows 8 machine.  Connection works and I can mount it, but it rather slow.  The wiki page suggests adding vers= to the options, and the man page for mount.cifs says that windows 8 is 3.0.  However I get an error when attempting to add that option I get the following error:
    # sudo mount.cifs //NAS/Media /mnt/NAS -o vers=3.0
    mount error(112): Host is down
    Is this a syntax error, or something else?
    Solved it, ahould be vers=3

    Slowness is most likely caused by the Packages and/or drivers added to the MDT console. If you don't need the patches at boot time, remove them from the MDT console, and add a WSUS server instead. See if that speeds things up...Otherwise, yea look at the
    dism logs to determine what is slowing down the machine, share the logs on OneDrive if you still need help.

  • SOLVED:Beryl works; But white cube with XGL :(

    Well, Beryl works with nVidia drivers, but lacks the extra "smoothness" that xgl can give. So I tried using xgl with KDE via method 1 and I also tried method 2, but it gives me the dreaded "white cube". (Seems to be a popular trouble, but googling it yields no useful info)
    Any idea as to what I am doing wrong?

    I cannot thank you enough for this small, yet priceless bit of information. Please accept my thanks, I was battling with this for hours!
    EDIT: An important setting to regard is to select window manager/Beryl (right click on Beryl gem in panel). The default seems to be Kwin, which gives slightly laggy/choppy movement.

  • (SOMEWHAT SOLVED) grub2 finds and boots windows 7 but NOT arch

    I installed arch on a new system. I have 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate. I installed arch skipped bootloader, chrooted into system and installed grub2 and installed. My system is btrfs. I do not have a seperate swap or home partition. OS-prober is installed.  I have another system with btrfs and grub2 and all works fine. When I run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg I get this
    Keyboard is not working properly on other computer so I cannot insert code brackets.
    Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-linux
    Found initrd image: /boot/initramfs-linux.img
        No volume groups found   (what does this mean)
    Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1
    done
    Again boot and root partitions are btrfs. Grub2 is the bootloader and it does support btrfs at least the version in the repos a month ago did. I have feeling this might be the problem but I do not know why. Windows 7 boots successfully by the way. No Arch Linux
    Edit: Backed up boot partition. Made the partition ext4 and cp'd it all back and still no luck. I converted it because ran the grub-mkconfig again and I got everything above but also I got an unknown filesystem error.  Converting it back to btrfs...
    Edit 2: I am writing this from within windows but grub2 now shows Arch in the the menu. (no gui on this install yet) After what feels like 100 grub-installs and grub-mkconfigs it is all working. I still have two questions. For like half a second I see a file not found and I think it is a *.mod in /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc directory. (i have good eyes). What could this be? Secondly, what does no volume groups mean? Marking this somewhat solved.

    I'd just ask checking the grub.cfg file to see if the device id entries for arch in the grub menu are correct.
    In my case, I use ubuntu's grub2 and each time I have to update grub for some reason, it wont get the partition right for the arch entry.
