[Solved] /bin/mount hanging, preventing shutdown

Hi,
Upgraded my system today - got a problem with symbolic links to /var/run and /var/somethingelse which I solved using the solution in another post. But now mount shows a continuous 100% system load, and I am unable to kill (even -9) it. It also prevents me to shutdown the machine.
I just have two HDs in the computer, no USB disks or sticks. Booting seems OK, except for the message that /bin/mount is timing out (or something) and will be killed (which I guess it isn't).
Any ideas?

I am not sure if the mount showing 100% and not being able to shutdown are related or not.
but here's another thread -- not being able to shutdown. :: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=143113
As for your mount issue -- are you using any nfs shares? if so, do you have the netfs daemon in your DAEMONS array?

    Thank you for your response, i haven't been able to replicate the fault again on the mid 2011 iMacs but i have had the problem on a number of mid 2007 iMacs. Please find attached log.

  • Backupd-helper is preventing shutdown.

    When I shut down my MacBook (Mid-2010 13" Unibody), It hangs for a minute or so and then displays the message that Backupd-helper is preventing shutdown. The only way I can shut down is holding down the power button for a couple of seconds before it powers down.
    This started happening after I update to 10.8.1

    Same problem. I have a late 2011 i7 macbook running 10.8.1. With Safari running, I close the lid to sleep it and that's where I think my problem starts. After I open it, I will press command-option-esc to bring up force quit, and there it is! Backupd-helper
    I don't like weird stuff happening on my brand new machine so I took drastic action, as suggested on another thread dealing with shutdown problems. I did a complete reinstall of 10.8.1 from a usb stick. I wiped my drive, twice. Then I reinstalled the os and brought my mac back to life. Basically back to square one when I originally uprgraded from 10.7. (I've read that's the best way to install the OS, from a usb stick doing a drive wipe.)
    The same problem occurred after I wiped the drive and reinstalled everything. Same exact thing with sleeping, safari, etc.
    My fix is to check the force quit dialogue before shutting down. Hmmm, that's silly seeing as 10.8 is excellent and fast. 10.8.2 ?

  • Rc.shutdown hangs on shutdown/reboot

    Hi,
    I installed Arch two weeks ago. Unfortunately it hangs at shutdown/reboot. It stopps succesfully the network-daemon and stops at this point. Keyboard and Mouse are responding but I'm unable to log in via a different console.
    The daemon that should be stopped after network is syslog-ng.
    My daemons:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !hotplug !pcmcia network nscd portmap fam nfslock netfs ypbind autofs crond gdm)
    I was able to reboot the system succesfully by disabling syslog-ng in the rc.conf and commenting out following lines of the rc.shutdown:
    #!/bin/bash
    # /etc/rc.shutdown
    . /etc/rc.conf
    . /etc/rc.d/functions
    # avoid staircase effect
    /bin/stty onlcr
    echo " "
    printhl "Initiating Shutdown..."
    echo " "
    if [ -x /etc/rc.local.shutdown ]; then
    /etc/rc.local.shutdown
    fi
    if [ "$PREVLEVEL" = "3" -o "$PREVLEVEL" = "5" ]; then
    # Shutdown daemons
    let i=${#DAEMONS[@]}
    while [[ i -ge 0 ]]; do
    if [[ `echo ${DAEMONS[$i]} | grep '^[^!]' | wc -l` -eq 1 ]]; then
    /etc/rc.d/${DAEMONS[$i]#@} stop
    fi
    let i=i-1
    done
    # find any leftover daemons and shut them down
    # these lines cause my system to stop the shutdown
    #if [ -d /var/run/daemons ]; then
    # for daemon in `ls /var/run/daemons`; do
    # /etc/rc.d/$daemon stop
    # done
    #fi
    fi
    # Terminate all processes
    stat_busy "Sending SIGTERM To Processes"
    /sbin/killall5 -15 &> /dev/null
    /bin/sleep 5
    stat_done
    I have absolutely no idea why my system is acting this way.
    [UPDATE]
    I tried using syslogd instead of syslog-ng but there's still the same problem. Why does my system dislike a system-logger this much?

    *bump*
    I have an almost identical problem to this one.  Which would be the most pertinent system, and log files one would need to help me trouble shoot this?

    Status is fine, it just hangs on shutdown. A couple of months I think, don't quite remember. I cleared the pacman caches too since I thought everything was working ok at startup, so not sure what the previous version was.

  • How to find out the info regarding Solaris, server hang or shutdown.

    Hi
    As I am handling the Solaris 9 Server remotely.
    As in last week the server has stopped to respond suddenly, we have tried to ping, ssh which was not working. As ultimately we have asked the Data Centre Team to hard reboot the same, to resolve the issue.
    In the same ref I would like to know how we come to know the reason, what caused to reboot the same, i.e . any log file, etc..
    I have check /var/adm/messages, but not found any detail for the same.
    Thanks
    Rajan
    I

    No core files?
    No hope for an answer.
    As you learned in the other Internet forum.
    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/solaris-opensolaris-20/how-to-find-out-the-info-regarding-solaris-server-hang-or-shutdown.-621500/
    To get such corefiles analyzed,
    you would need to use your service contract and log a support case with Sun.
    They have the special software tools to do that.

  • Mail is preventing shutdown

    Every time I try to shut down I get told that Mail is preventing shutdown, I know how to force quit but how do I prevent it from happening in the first place?

    Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
    from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
    Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
    Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • [SOLVED] USB mount weird problem.

    So, I have this weird problem - udev automounting does not allow normal user to write to usb device.
    /etc/fstab:
    /dev/sdc1 /media/usbhd-sdc1 vfat users,exec,dev,suid 0 1
    /etc/rules.d/10-my-udev.rules:
    KERNEL!="sd[a-z][0-9]", GOTO="mnt_auto_mount_end"
    ACTION=="add", RUN+="/bin/mkdir /media/usbhd-%k", RUN+="/bin/mount /dev/%k"
    ACTION=="remove", RUN+="/bin/umount -l /media/usbhd-%k", RUN+="/bin/rmdir /media/usbhd-%k"
    LABEL="mnt_auto_mount_end"
    When I manually do:
    $ mount /dev/sdxy
    it works nicely, but when i do it with 'sudo' it's the same as udev. So I guess that's something with udev. Can any1 help me?

    What filesystem is on your flash drive?  If it's FAT, there's no concept of ownership, so linux will just make the user running mount own everything, hence permissions problems when root mounts it.  I believe RUN+="/bin/mount -o uid=<your uid>,gid=<your gid> /dev/%k" or RUN+="/bin/mount -o umask=000 /dev/%k" will make it writeable by you and the world, respectively.  If the second solution is too insecure but you need multiple users to be able to access mounted flash drives, check out HAL.

  • Mac Pro 5,1 hangs on shutdown

    I use a 2012 3.33 GHz 6-core Mac Pro 5,1 in my recording studio, running OS 10.9.2 with 16 GB RAM. I use all of the PCIe slots:  slot #1 is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, #2 is a Universal Audio UAD-2 Quad card for my powered-plugin library, #3 is the Avid Pro Tools HD-Native card and #4 is an OWC Accelsior 120GB 6G SSD which I use as my primary Pro Tools production drive.
    Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks and added the Accelsior SSD (this January) the computer hangs on shutdown and occasionally on startup. With shutdown it's the same every time - when I shut it down I get a blank gray screen with only the cursor arrow showing, and I can still move the arrow around. After a few minutes I hit the power button to force it to shut off.
    The machine also runs very sluggishly and takes forever to boot up.  It almost as if there are a ton of hidden processes bogging it down.
    I've checked and re-checked for viruses, I've reset the SMC and PRAM, I use Disk Utility to verify all my drives and repair all the disk permissions about 3 times per week, and I do daily diagnostics with Tech Tool Pro 7.  I'm about to pull all the PCIe cards except the graphics card and disconnect all peripherals except keyboard and mouse and then reconnect everything in steps but before I do all that I was wondering if any forum participants have dealt with a similar problem ?

    You could try a different SSD than the Mercury model from OWC.
    Also, any and even the ones from OWC should have TRIM enabled and you do not.
    I have a number of Samsung SSD and just noticed one $110 250GB

    Different firmware can matter.

  • Random crashes of different programs and it hangs at shutdown

    For the last 2 weeks I have had problems with random crashes of different programs and that it hangs at shutdown. Not everyday, for 2-3 days everything is working fine, then comes "that kind of day" when everything crash (segmentation fault). It could be Firefox, Chromium, Spotify and other programs, dropbox and nm-applet has disappeared from systray in panel. Usually it happen when I see flash video, but it has happened without that. Once Firefox had crashed when I was away from the computer. "Those days" always end with that it hangs at shutdown.
    I don't know how to find out what is the cause of this, or if there is a relationship with those diffrent programs that crash and that it can't shutdown properly.

    The next day it was a long list of items like this
    Feb 27 08:14:31 localhost kernel: [ 7.693636] EXT4-fs (sda7): ext4_orphan_cleanup: deleting unreferenced inode 1069038
    I'm getting worried, because this has happened so many times now. Is there a risk it can damage the hardware?
    I just installed the lts-kernel but I don't know yet if that help, or if it has anything to do with the kernel.
    I found very strange in errors.log, one day it was lots of lines like
    Feb 29 21:37:44 localhost udevd[198]: wrong type 0
    More than 13 millions of lines like that! That log file is 678 MB.

    Here is from kernel.log

  • [SOLVED] fstab, cifs, and a shutdown delay

    I have the following manual /etc/fstab entry:
    //server/audio /server/audio cifs ro,guest,noauto 0 0
    It mounts fine.  However, when it's mounted and I shutdown/reboot with systemctl I get a ~60 second delay while the shutdown process unmounts it.  Unmounting manually prior to shutdown is instantaneous.
    Any ideas to resolve my shutdown delay?

    It seems that your network might be coming down before the share is unmounted. You should probably see if you can verify in you logs, but basically you need to ensure that the remote-fs.target is dep'ed after any network service you use.  After implies it will start after, but also that it will shut down in the reverse.

  • Why is my macbook pro hanging on shutdown?

    Hi,
         For the last few weeks my MBP has been hanging at shutdown or restart on the gray screen with the grey loading wheel. I tried leaving it on this stage for a day with an outcome of it still hanging.
          I read a thread on apple support that mentioned the same problem with a solution of uninstalling kaspersky anit virus which i had quite recently installed myself but after uninstalling the problem ceased for just one  shutdown cycle.
         Additionally, I am able to shutdown or restart at the login screen and I have tried shutting down with the "reopen windows when logging back in" box both checked and unchecked and with windows open or closed of multiple programs.
         The list of programs currently installed are: Parellels Desktop (with windows 7 proffesional with every default installed windows program), memorex expressit label design studio for windows (the only non default windows program installed on my computer), Adobe CS5.5 Master Collection, Microsoft Office 2011 for mac os, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, the Messages beta, Vuze, Tuneup, iBooks author, HP photosmart printer (and extensions), Adobe AIR and flash, and every default program that comes pre-installed on the late 2011 macbook pro. Every one of these programs is fully updated.
    Please Help:)

    Boot into the Lion Recovery disk (command-r) and select Disk Utility. Then run Repair Disk.

    This happened a long time ago when I was still using XP. There were a few possibilities, but unfortunately unable to help much as we cannot see your screen, setup, programs etc.
    Suggestion, in order of what I think is possible reasons
    1) If you have 2xRam, swap their locations and run ram diagnostic, faulty memory?
    2) Plug out your network cable and turn off wifi and do the shutdown, sympton remains?
    3) Check your firefox addson for anything that syncs, eg bookmark syncing, backup etc
    4) Download ccleaner, clean the registry and empty all the trash etc
    5) Download and use a free tool call ProcessTamer, this one works for XP, it sometimes helps regulate those CPU usuage, "idling process" or something
    6) Uninstall your java, download the latest and reinstall it. There was an add on that fouls up IE that casue all the slowness, unsure if your installation of firefox has it.
