[Solved]Black Screen! Help me :(

Hi,
my Arch installed on Toshiba Portege M100 can't start xfce 4 or slim.
But from beginning:
Firstly I used kdemod 3.5 for 1 year. But my Toshiba got slower and slower.
So I decided to switch to xfce4 due to performance benefits.
So I installed xfce 4 with a
# pacman -S xfce4
# pacman -S xfce4-goodies
Then I started it with
startxfce4
And it came... NOTHING. Only Black Screen.
After that I read on archwiki that I should install DBUS :
# pacman -S dbus
Anyway, I restarted.
Then I installed slim as my new Loginmanager.
I added Slim to /etc/rc.d as a daemon.
But unfortunately I didn't create a ~/.xinitrc file (didn't know).
So, after that I restarted again and it started Slim but only a black screen appeared.
And I can do nothing such as ALT + F2,F3...
So my question is how to get to console?

Try CTL+ALT F2/3/4/5/6 - F7 to get back to your black screen

  • [SOLVED] black screen when connecting rdesktop to localhost

I am trying to set up my machine so I can remote into it via RDP.
    When I run the command
    rdesktop localhost
from my terminal rdesktop pops up.  I choose sesman-Xvnc and type in my password and a plain black screen is all I get.  Sometimes I'll get a message that says "Oh no Something has gone wrong.  A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. When I run printenv it shows that my HOME variable is indeed set: HOME=/home/will
I've tried restarting vncserver.service with systemctl and I get the same error.
Per the vncserver wiki I created a vncserver@:1.service file in /etc/systemd/system and enabled it.  It starts and runs without a problem.
I have tried using the nouveau video drivers instead of the nvidia driver that I'm currently using and that produced a similar result but with a white square at the upper left hand corner of the rdesktop window.
I'm new to arch-linux and linux in general.  I've been using it for about a month now and I've been able to solve all of my problems through using this forum, reading wikis and the man pages of command line programs.  This one has me completely stumped.
I have no reason to believe the problem is related to xrdp or to rdesktop because the only errors or decent information I have been able to find about what could be going wrong has been the vncserver.service error shown above.

Ok.  I finally got this working.  What I did was I created a file at /etc/systemd/system called vncserver@:4.service and set the user in the file to my username.  Then I went into xrdp.ini which is located at /etc/xrdp and under [xrdp1], (which is for sesman-Xvnc ) I set the port value to 5904 which is the port that my vncserver@:4 service uses when its running.
Since xrdp uses tigervnc as its back end it was just a matter of pointing it to a running vncserver.
    Don't I feel silly
Thanks Knute for your help.  Your idea led me to the right answer.

  • [Solved] Black screen - Installation issues on Dell Inspiron 1720

    Hi,
I'm new to Archlinux, and i want to post my experience/issues of my first installation:
I performance the core installation (base + devel packages and wireless tools as extra package)
    relevant hardware/drivers used:
    b44 for broadcom nic (wired)
    iwl3945 for my wireless nic
intel g965 graphics card (intel GM965 express chipset - xf86-video-intel driver)
Installation went ok till i had to upgrade the system:
    pacman -Suy (after package synchronization)
    glibc: /usr/bin/tzselect exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/sbin/zdump exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/sbin/zic exists in filesystem
After some research on the wiki i found that i had to query the packages to know if those files are owned by a program or not (if no pakcage owns those i could remove them, but it was not the case)
    pacman -Qo tzselect
    pacman -Qo zdump
    pacman -Qo zic
All were owned by the package tzdata:
so i reinstalled the package tzdata:
    pacman -S tzdata
Has this to be filed as a bug or is this a stupid newbie error? (did the installation on a virtual machine, on a laptop (twice) and always got this error)
After that i was able to upgrade the system.
Following that i installed the video card drivers:
pacman -S xf86-video-intel and i rebooted the system.
After reboot i got the grub screen, booted the system and got a black screen (last thing i saw as something like loading udevevents..)
Googling again and looking the forums here, i read that i had to chroot my environment and update the system again (pacman -Suy -> which did not help).
Soo after some more searching i found 2 things:
    - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KM … odesetting  : i added this in menu.lst: nomodeset
    - i blacklisted the intel driver
Rebooted and i my graphics were working again.
So later on i'll test if the parameter solved my problem, or blacklisting the driver.
    - i'll unblacklist the driver and reboot -> if it works then i know it's that parameter
    - if not ok, i'll blacklist the driver and remove the parameter from the menu.lst
I hope to find what's causing the issue.
Anyone having issues with the intel driver?
    Thanks for sharing your experience/info.

Getting a little bit further, it requires a lot of configuration to get what you want..
    - I just installed fluxbox
    - added my user to the sudo group (allowing to reboot)
    - installed Slim
What's i've noticed also is that when you select an interface in etc/rc.conf, for example, eth0, and it's not connected at bootup, you lose like 10 seconds before the boot process proceeds.
If you out-comment that line, you get a red line (error) saying that no interface is definded.
I guess i'll just have to disable the network daemon at startup and install some kind of network connection manager for my wireless at logon.

  • [solved] Black screen when booting installation

The basic problem. I have a HD6870, my monitor is connected through DVI (& my second one through HDMI). No integrated graphics.
After I try to boot the x64_86 version, the screen goes black after 'booting kernel'.
    Things I've tried:
radeon.modeset=0 (gives drm:radeon_init [radeon]] *ERROR* no UMS suppot in radeon module)
    radeon.modeset=1 (black screen)
nomodeset (drm:radeon_init [radeon]] *ERROR* no UMS suppot in radeon module)
    disconnected second screen (black screen)
    video=SVIDEO-1:d (black screen)
i915.modeset=0 (I have no intel, but black screen)
    acpi=off (doesn't work either).
It is driving me crazy. Can someone help me?
    EDIT:
    Solved by upgrading BIOS

I initially thought the same, tried with DVI, HDMI single and double monitor, but it didn't work.

    See above.
EDIT 2: putting HD in AHCI mode makes just the screen black. Backlight stays on. In Knoppix and Ubuntu it makes the kernel hang at booting kernel _

  • [SOLVED]black screen after installing nvidia driver from official repo

    Hi!
I have just made a clean install this afternoon and I really can not get the drivers from nvidia in the official rep to work. After booting it just gives me blackscreen.
    What I have tried:
    1. Blacklisted nouveau.
    2. Doublechecked mkinitcpio.conf for nouveao under "MODULES" section.
    3. Rebuilt initramfs by doing
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    4. i tried with a "nomodeset" by entering it in grub.
    5. Last I tried to remove nouveau by doing
    pacman -Ss nouevau
    pacman -R mesa
pacman -Rc mesa (here I double checked the packages and nothing really vital for a full boot of a non-graphical interface (TTY1) is gone)
After Pressing enter from grub I can not see anythin,  except from some text that flashes by, Something about checking /dev/sda6 for any errors... Except from that, nothing. Just a black screen.
I am writing this from my phone right now, please understand if I am doing any spelling errors    (too lazy to chroot ehen in my bed and PC turned off for the night )

But it's not over I started X but the mause and keyboard are not responding (they are dead).
Before when i got this I just try hwd -xa and this solved my problem.
Now i use xorg.conf generated by hwd -xa and it's happening (mouse and keyboard are not responding).
    I got "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true"

    Hi,
You can try all the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the links below and check.
It might help or it'll atleast help you to identify the cause of the problem..
DO THIS FIRST - Perform a hard reset
If hard reset doesnt work then try the steps from this link:
Symptom: LEDs glow, fan noise is heard, but display is black or blank
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after boot

    Hello,
I've been running Arch for a while now successfully, and decided to give Windows 10 a go, so I installed it on the side. Naturally, Windows overwrote the Grub2 bootloader, but I knew that was going to happen.
So after playing with Windows 10 for a while, I decided to go back to Arch. I put in the Arch Live CD, chrooted into my Arch installation, and ran the grub-install commands
    # grub-install --target=i386-pc --recheck=/dev/sdc
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Grub reported no errors, other than something "invading" block 32. But nevertheless reported "success".
I reboot, and sure enough Grub is there, but when I try to load Arch, the first time I got a message that it was re-checking the /dev/sdc3 (which is where Arch is installed, /dev/sdc2 is where Windows is) because it's mount time is "in the future". That check ran for about 10 seconds, then proceeded with "normal" boot. The problem is... I see the message "/dev/sdc3 is clean" after which the SDDM (former KDM, the display manager) should load.
But all I see is black screen (not screen turned off, just black). I tried going to tty's (Alt+F1 to F5), but couldn't. I erased the Xorg.0.log (through another chroot) and rebooted with the same problem, then accessed the log later only to find them empty. I tried disabling SDDM and enabling GDM which I had installed, same problem.
What could it be? I don't even know where to look, as I don't really see any error messages anywhere.
    Thanks!

Once again duck programming, err, problem solving to the rescue.
I chrooted again and removed the nvidia drivers and disabled sddm. Installed xf86-video-noevau drivers and rebooted. This time I was greeted with tty1. Success!
Did some more fiddling, but I think it was the SDDM that was the culprit. I uninstalled it, and installed LightDM (with kde-greeter). Enabled the lightdm using systemctl, also removed the noevau with nvidia (back to proprietary), rebooted, and voila, it works! I am greeted with the login screen.

  • [solved] Black screen after upgrade

Hi, I upgraded arch on my old laptop about a week ago and after reboot all I got was a black screen. The problem is ctrl+alt+backspace doesn't do anything, nor does ctrl+alt+f*. So I tried to boot using "arch fallback" and my own arch runlevel 3 grub entry, but got the same problem - I can see the text running during boot, but at some point I get a black screen. I already downloaded puppy linux, but I have no idea where to look. I looked in x.org.log and found a warning about fbdev not found, but I thought I don't need that anyway because afaik xorg was using the intel module, I'm not sure however, because I used hardware auto detection. Without being able to boot I have no idea if there is any way to install it. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm guessing you have an Intel graphic card. You can try the following to deactivate KMS which is now default for Intel graphics cards:
You can add "i915.modeset=0" to your kernel options in your grub config. This may, however, result in a hard crash on starting X. Maybe this helps, but this is only a workaround. KMS will be the only way in the future (upstream choice).
    EDIT:
    News item is here: http://www.archlinux.org/news/477/
As I have seen from your pacman.log you have upgrade the kernel to .32, so I think my advice should help.

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after GRUB

    Hello everyone
I was setting up a machine with E17 and was trying various DM's since none seemed to work. After attempting to use LightDM, I get a black screen after GRUB. I was trying to read the various logs at /var/log/ but I cannot understand them properly. I tried reinstalling entrance and LightDM with no luck. I even tried editing grub's entry appending '1' or 's' and still no dice. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi tnx for both answers.
I missed something important in Xorg.log. As you can see, fbdev and modesetting aren't loading as usual. I didn't check grub stuff, I don't think it's related, since loading in level 3 (text mode) I get a black screen but I can login as root and turn off the computer blindlessly.

Should have done that earlier... renaming .kde4

So if anybody else runs in this problem too, my advice: check your aur-plasmoids!

Hi! First a little gripping out. Both your messages leave a lot to be desired. Second neither of you posted your model number, so we don't even know what OS you are using. Third, you need to start your own message, not post on someone else's.
Now after gripping you out, start here.
