[SOLVED] Black screen when starting GNOME via GDM

Hey guys,
I'm a bit of a Linux newb, so apologies in advance for any stupidity on my part.
I've just installed Arch in VirtualBox by following the beginner's guide, plus sudo, and now I'm trying to set up GNOME.
I've installed the following packages, with all of the extra packages for GNOME selected:
gnome
xf86-video-fbdev
xf86-video-vesa
virtualbox-guest-modules
virtualbox-guest-utils
Since I want GNOME to start, I've run systemctl enable gdm. I haven't made any changes to any configuration files related to X, GDM, or GNOME.
When I boot GNOME seems to load, and the display size scales to fit the size of the VirtualBox window, but it freezes on a black screen.
Here is the journalctl output for the boot:

Thanks for the response.
I disabled gdm, installed xorg-xinit, and ran startx. It briefly switches to a black window at the correct resolution for the VirtualBox window, then exits.
There's no journalctl entries for it, but there was an X log in /var/log:

I resolved this by installing xterm, but that just loads X into a bunch of white terminal windows; GNOME doesn't seem to be starting at all. Is there some configuration step I skipped?

    It was the PRAM.

  • Not able to start Gnome via GDM

I have just installed Archlinux on an old laptop (HP ZV5000), which I want to bring back to life as there is always a long queue to us the other PC in the family
Everything went smooth, except the last step: when I try to login via GDM, the screen becomes gry (as if it is entering the Gnome environment, but then it is stuck there.
Strange thing is that If I disable GDM and run Gnome with startx from the command line, then everything is working fine
Currently I am anyway using the laptop that way, but I still feel uncomfortable as this is not the way it should work
I have tried to ssh to the machine while stuck into the grey screen and this is what I've got while checking the status of the GDM service:
    # systemctl status gdm.service

Does anybody have a clue on what the problem could be?

    Sorry for the late reply.
Yes, I did, but there are no differences between the Xorg.0.log that is created when I (unsuccessfully) start Gnome via GDM or when I start it with startx. There is an error in both cases, but Gnome fails only in one of those two.
    This is what I get

  • [SOLVED] black screen when connecting rdesktop to localhost

I am trying to set up my machine so I can remote into it via RDP.
    When I run the command
    rdesktop localhost
from my terminal rdesktop pops up.  I choose sesman-Xvnc and type in my password and a plain black screen is all I get.  Sometimes I'll get a message that says "Oh no Something has gone wrong.  A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. All extensions have been disabled as a precaution." It also gives me a log out button.
I have installed xrdp from the AUR via yaourt.  I am using xrdp version 0.6.1-1,  tigervnc 1.4.0-1, and rdesktop 1.8.3-1.

I've tried restarting vncserver.service with systemctl and I get the same error.
Per the vncserver wiki I created a vncserver@:1.service file in /etc/systemd/system and enabled it.  It starts and runs without a problem.
I have tried using the nouveau video drivers instead of the nvidia driver that I'm currently using and that produced a similar result but with a white square at the upper left hand corner of the rdesktop window.
I'm new to arch-linux and linux in general.  I've been using it for about a month now and I've been able to solve all of my problems through using this forum, reading wikis and the man pages of command line programs.  This one has me completely stumped.
I have no reason to believe the problem is related to xrdp or to rdesktop because the only errors or decent information I have been able to find about what could be going wrong has been the vncserver.service error shown above.

Ok.  I finally got this working.  What I did was I created a file at /etc/systemd/system called vncserver@:4.service and set the user in the file to my username.  Then I went into xrdp.ini which is located at /etc/xrdp and under [xrdp1], (which is for sesman-Xvnc ) I set the port value to 5904 which is the port that my vncserver@:4 service uses when its running.
Since xrdp uses tigervnc as its back end it was just a matter of pointing it to a running vncserver.
    Don't I feel silly
Thanks Knute for your help.  Your idea led me to the right answer.

  • No back light or black screen when starting, no back light or black screen when starting

My screen on my MacBook Pro went black on me last night while working on the computer. I'm wanting to know how to fix it. I tried starting it in safe mode by holding down the Shift key when starting it but that did not work. I unplugged everything..just the power cord and still nothing. I also tried control, option PR and still nothing. I went to remove the battery but saw it takes a special three pronged screw driver. Which I will get if that is the issue. Can anyone offer any other suggestions.. I don't want to spend the money on repairs if someone could help.

try doing an SMC reset the following article tells how:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
if there is still nothing on the display i would take to apple store or service provider so they can see if it's a video or graphics card issue on the mac.

  • [solved] Black screen when booting installation

The basic problem. I have a HD6870, my monitor is connected through DVI (& my second one through HDMI). No integrated graphics.
After I try to boot the x64_86 version, the screen goes black after 'booting kernel'.
    Things I've tried:
radeon.modeset=0 (gives drm:radeon_init [radeon]] *ERROR* no UMS suppot in radeon module)
    radeon.modeset=1 (black screen)
nomodeset (drm:radeon_init [radeon]] *ERROR* no UMS suppot in radeon module)
    disconnected second screen (black screen)
    video=SVIDEO-1:d (black screen)
i915.modeset=0 (I have no intel, but black screen)
    acpi=off (doesn't work either).
It is driving me crazy. Can someone help me?
    EDIT:
    Solved by upgrading BIOS

Should this be on or off?
Edit: Only thing remotely close I could find was legacy USB settings, but those just disable my keyboard in the arch install.
Lone_Wolf wrote:Your video card does have crossfire capabilities, do you have 2 videocards in your machine ?
    1 videocard
    Lone_Wolf wrote:Another possibility :
Maybe linux does send output to a wrong monitor. Could you try booting with only 1 monitor connected ?
I initially thought the same, tried with DVI, HDMI single and double monitor, but it didn't work.
    Lone_Wolf wrote:if still black screen with 1 monitor , try a different connection (your card has 4 it seems : hdmi, display port, dvi-d & dvi-i ).
    See above.
EDIT 2: putting HD in AHCI mode makes just the screen black. Backlight stays on. In Knoppix and Ubuntu it makes the kernel hang at booting kernel _

  • [SOLVED] black screen when resuming from suspend

    Hi all,
I've got this new laptop and I can't get it to resume from sleep. The screen is black, probably not even powered. When I resume I am still logged into my session and can type commands (espeak for example, which works), and I can use my other computer to ssh and get the logs.
This new computer has got hybrid graphics card from AMD. I think this is relevant, as I've read some stuff about the GPU not being powered after sleep.
    $ lspci
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Richland [Radeon HD 8650G]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Neptune XT [Radeon HD 8970M] (rev ff)
I'm using the open source drivers because I'd like to use bumblebee to switch between graphic cards. It's not working yet, though.
Also I've read some topics concerning similar issues, but most of them were solved by upgrading to a newer kernel, like 3.8 or 3.9 at that time. I am running 3.16.7 (these topics were from 2013, I found nothing more recent).
To suspend, I close the lid of the computer or use
    systemctl suspend
I tried switching to pm-utils for suspend and resume, it still didn't work, event with all the troubleshooting tips on the wiki.
I'd be glad to provide any logs you would need in order to help me.
    Thank you for your help
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the brightness keys work well before suspend but have no effect afterwards.

I found this post, but I don't know if this is relevant or not.
    It says:
ps: if you use this method, before suspending or hybernating make sure that the intel card is the one in use, or when you recover the pc the display won't show anything (or at least that's how it work on my laptop)
It is about AMD/Intel hybrid graphics with vga switcheroo, and I'm on AMD/AMD and not using switcheroo, but I don't know enough to say if this is the same problem or not.

  • BLACK SCREEN on start up with 3 beeps, FREEZES when power unplugged, IF IT BOOTS splash screen freezes, OVERHEATING REQUIRED TO BOOT - 0x7B, Event 41 kernel-power

Issue: One day I unplug the power, the screen freezes and I get frozen music sound. I shut down, start up, I get 3 beeps (1 short 2 long), which indicates a Video failure according to the Thinkpad Laptop beep code list.
How I solve the issue day-to-day: I turn the heat up - I disconnect the battery and hard drive and plug in the power then turn it on. I will wait until the underneath is searing hot with a blanket blocking the fan's flow of air, I mean way hot because any
cooler and it won't start. Plug stuff back in, Hard drive first, Battery second, turn off with power button hold, unplug power, replug power.
I turn it on, no beeps, it goes past the first Lenovo screen, then gives me a prompt because it "didn't shut down properly" and continue regular startup. What happens next is the Windows logo appears,
and just as the animated windows logo starts to move (you see 2 small colored dots on the screen), it freezes. I see this every time, I know naturally that it means that the laptop is still too hot to go past that point, so I shut it down and try again. After
about 5 - 10 tries it will go past the splash screen and into the login area, then it's all fine.
Sometimes when I unplug the power from the back by accident it will freeze. By accident I mean that the connector wiggles it's self out easily. This unplug freezing thing started happening about 1 week before the 3 beep black screen problem started rolling,
    so I'm putting 2 together.

I got a Blue Screen of Death the first time I started it up with the overheating ritual, but I never got it since. It was 0X7B.
I got another Blue Screen of Death about a week ago, but came as it was on already and I had been using it, and said something about disabling Cache or Shadowing in BIOS. I never got it since.
           Event Viewer events found:
    1. Kernel-Power, Summary page.
There are critical events for a few things like Kernel-Power, Event ID 41, Task Category (63). There are 19 of them, each day 1 or 2 of them but mostly 1, so this maybe corresponds to my daily ritual.

    3. LMS - HCMI - Event ID 2, Task Category: none
"LMS Service cannot connect to HECI driver".
I came across a very sluggish performing control panel for Nvidia before and after this problem, and I tried installing a newer version, which I had to jump through a few hoops to do, like uninstalling first, not just updating. At first it said that the
driver wasnt for the system, which was wrong. I made it work somehow, but it was still sluggish. I rolled it back to an earlier driver, and now it works fine. No sluggish performance / slight freeze window thing going on.
MSCONFIG.exe, Boot Advanced Options: I have tried twice to change this 1 setting, check box "Number of processors" and change to 2 processors, because I do have 2 processors. I have been able to change
this in the past, but it does not save the setting now, and I believe this option was selected before I started having problems, and settings did not disappear then.
What could this be. The small round BIOS battery? The video card like everyone presumes? (I.E. the entire motherboard replacement), Software? The wiggly power input area? (Not enough power getting in?), Firmware of some sort? The BIOS software being wrong?

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • 970 GAMING black screen when boot on cold start, have to clear CMOS everytime

I have 970 GAMING w/ FX8320, it shows black screen when boot on cold start, have to clear CMOS everytime to enter default.
I have updated it to the up to date M11 bios. Once it boot up, it functions OK no matter whether you reboot or reset it. But after turned off a few hours (cooled down), it shows on black screen again on boot, all LED lights up OK, but I can hear the fan like keep rebooting, any idea?

In what DIMM slots did you insert your memory?  I just got and at this moment building a new computer with a 970.
A horrible experience I had with my last build reminded me of it.  My board was am MSI A88XM-E45.  DIMM1 is blue, DIMM2 is black, DIMM3 is blue, & DIMM4 is black.  When using two sticks of RAM, it says to install one on DIMM1 & the other in DIMM3 (Makes sense... After all, it's color colored that way).
Well it would not boot.  I reseated every component and for HOURS tried almost everything.  Finally I decided to place my two sticks of RAM in the first two DIMMS and viola!
I think I will begin this build the same way.

  • AIR - black screen when packaged

When I run the application from Flash Develop everything is fine, both in Debug and Release.
After the application is packaged and installed, I just get a black screen when run.
However if I add a 'debug' file to applicationDirecty\META-INF\AIR\debug the application runs normally.
What could be causing this? and how can it be solved?

A debugging utility seemed to be causing the problem in the release build... removing calls to this solved the issue.

  • Black screen when opening in .pdf

I'm having problems with opening the C5-project in .pdf. Some people get a black screen when opening the .pdf file (version 9 or higher), most of the time it goes well, but 1 out of 10 times it doesn't work. I have know idea what could be the cause of the black screen (use of laptop?).
Now it is impossible to send this project to our stakeholders, because I don't know whether it works or not.
Does anyone recognize this and knows why this happens, and how to solve this?

There was a recent patch released by Adobe for Captivate 5 that addressed a similar black screen issue in Captivate SWFs.
You can get the patch here: http://www.adobe.com/support/captivate/downloads.html
It may turn out to fix your issue as well.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.
