[Solved] Bootup Freezes

Hi all, been using Gentoo for a very long time and now I'm starting to transition to Arch. Loving it quite a lot.
I have a problem on a new install I'm doing on my ancient Macbook Pro.
I got everything setup with rEFInd and grub seems to be working ok.
I get to the bootup chooser in grub and choose the Arch Linux option (I went in and took off the quiet option for this screenshot)
It seems to be working ok until it gets to 'Reached target Local File Sytems (Pre)' and then it just hangs.
I have my hdd setup as
/dev/sda1 is the /boot/efi partition
/dev/sda2 is the /boot/ partition
/dev/sda3 is the swap partition.
/dev/sda4 is the / partition.
I have tried reinstalling systemd, mkinitcpio, and the kernel. I found something online that said to add 'ahci sd_mod' to the modules in mkinitcpio.conf but it didn't seem to help.
Any ideas?

Yes it is an older Macbook Pro (april 2008). Yes I have read that I can use rEFInd to go directly to the kernel, but it took me ~12 hours just to get a working bootloader setup this far. It may not be pretty but it works so I'm not super worried about that.
So I commented out a couple of lines in fstab and that seems to have helped
# /etc/fstab: static file system information

Now it seems to hang at "Started Trigger Flushing of Journal to Persistent Storage"
One time it got past there to where it complains I don't have the firmware for my b43 wireless card and froze there, but now it seems to stop at this point every time.

  • [Solved] Random freezes on a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q888

    Hi guys,
My laptop has been freezing randomly, about once per day, during the last 2 or 3 weeks. The system freezes completely, i.e. the display freezes, I cannot move the mouse, I cannot use the keyboard, the CAPS LOCK light starts blinking, and if there is any music playing, it enters an infinite loop of 2-3 seconds. I cannot use any keyboard combination such as Ctrl+Alt+F1 to switch into a terminal. Then I have no choice but to press and hold the power button.
The freezes seem to happen in a completely random fashion, independently from what programs/applications I am running, for how long the computer has been on, how much memory I am using, CPU temperature, etc. Also, I cannot find any clue in the log files. Everything seems to be OK just before the freeze (except for some random, annoying, but apparently unrelated messages such as "[system] Failed to activate service 'org.freedesktop.Avahi': timed out"). The only clue is that the CAPS LOCK key is blinking during the freeze, which means... kernel panic?
I am running 64-bit Arch Linux on a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q888. My current kernel is 3.4.2-2, but this has been happening since at least 3.3.7-1. I know another person with exactly the same laptop model as me, who is having the same issues. I am lost here. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your reply! Actually, yesterday I upgraded to the new kernel (version 3.4.3-1) and my laptop has not freezed since then. So, maybe I will wait for a couple of days and hopefully mark this as solved.

  • [solved] Arch freezes before login

    Hello there,
today I restarted my computer after about 4 days uptime to clean the dust and reconnect my DVD derive. For this I removed my radeon graphics card and a usb device I didn't need.
After cleaning and reconnecting everything I tried to start my computer. My BIOS didn't let me and told me that my hard disk drive was failing and I should back it up and insert a 'proper' boot medium. I didn't really believe it because not so a long time ago I checked this device and it was completly fine. I disconnected the DVD drive and indeed my BIOS let me pass without any trouble.
But now Arch boots to the login shell and just freezes. I only get enough time to enter the first few letters of my username. Before the boot screen clears for the login screen I always get a glance on a error about my graphics card (a radeon hd 6850, I use the radeon driver) and another device and that they are initialized in a generic mode or something. Couldn't find anything in the logs about that.
Here are they and I hope someone is able to help:

Hm, dis- and reconnecting the graphics card solved the problem. Did this because I figured a hardware problem after freezes in three different live systems.

  • [SOLVED] Laptop freezes at startup after kernel upgrade to 3.13.6

Some days ago I got a new Dell Sputnik 3 Laptop and installed Arch Linux with UEFI Boot and gummiboot as bootloader. The installation was successful.
However two days ago there was an upgrade for the Linux Kernel from 3.13.5 to 3.13.6. When I restarted the Laptop after the upgrade of the kernel the Laptop freezed directly after pushing the power button (never got ahead of the initial DELL logo).
I ran the DELL hardware diagnostics to identify a possible damage of the SSD but everything was ok. Than I booted into a live system ad mounted the root partition and there was no problem work on it. Additionally I change the value of timeout in gummiboots loader.conf (it was commented out before). Since than I got the gummiboot boot menu at least. So narrowing down, I think something happened during the kernel upgrade. Unfortunately I have no clue what could it be since I am convinced that at the installation process some days before I did everything like it was described at the beginners guide so automatic gummiboot update had to be possible.
The drive is partitioned in the live system looks like this (look at sda):
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot
    └─sda2 8:2 0 235G 0 part /
    fstab like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=3f216fdb-f4c6-459a-856f-6f246d7a5bff / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=0F8F-2A3B /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
    # swap
    /swapfile none swap defaults 0 0
I have and arch.conf in gummiboot looking like this:
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 rw
and the loader.conf of gumiboot looking like this:
    timeout 5
    default 56cccedc29f1418ab2d8f1762ea09471-*
Now, I don't know anymore how to proceed to identify the problem and hopefully solve it

looks like this issue might be the same:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=172961&p=1
If I find time I might try using an alternative to gummiboot to see if this works.
Update: There also seems to be a reopened bug report on this https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33745

  • [Solved] System freezes

I successfully put Arch on my new desktop computer last night.  It wasn't difficult, coming from gentoo, and thus far I'm quite pleased with the system!  This is excellent work.
I do have an issue I'm not sure how to deal with, or where to start looking.  It seems my system completely freezes on occasion, forcing my to do a hard reboot.  So far it seems to happen principally when accessing the network-- downloading through pacman, syncing abs, or opening the occasional webpage in firefox.  It locks up both in console and in X.  I've been searching the forums for clues, but so far I'm stumped.  Can anyone help me?
I installed from the 2008.4 RC x86_64 core iso.  Network is accessed through a Linksys WUSB54GC, which loads perfectly with the rt73 modules.  Is there any other information that might be useful?

There's no evidence of anything at all in any kind of log, nothing that looks funny.  In the mean time, I've put in a custom kernel with 2.6.25, and the freezing has stopped.  It made for an awkward work-around to get NVIDIA working again, but the system is finally up and running.  Now I can put in the needed software, and enjoy learning this new system!
I don't know why the freezing was happening, but I'll mark this as solved since I'm satisfied with the current solution.

  • [SOLVED] System freeze after upgrade linux-3.12.9-2 to linux-3.13.4-1

After upgrading from kernel 3.12.9 to 3.13.4 (booth x86_64 architecture) i detected system freeze after round about 0.5s of the login screen about 80% of the time.
So i first thought it coulbe be the the ati driver and uninstalled that via livecd/chroot.
But the same thing happens in comand line only mode.
Afterwards i setup at ssh server to get into the maschine if it is still running, but is was also not responding to that.
Downgrading to 3.12.9 solved the issue. In journalctl i could not find any usefull information.

  • [SOLVED] Xfce freezes (maybe gtk-engine-murrine)

I'm just installed Xfce in a fresh Arch installation. The problem is that when I choose, for exemple, the Greybird gtk theme the environment totally freezes. This doesn't happen if I choose a theme that don't need gtk-engine-murrine. Anybody can help me? Sorry for my bad english.
Last edited by WretchedEgg (2013-02-10 04:08:24)

It's solved. I removed gtk-engine-murrine and cleaned the pacman cache. Then reinstalled the engine and now all works. I don't know what happened but now it's ok. Excuse me for the post.

  • [solved] Nautilus freezes when opening "properties"

    Heya,
unfortunately I can no longer open the "Properties" dialogue when right-clicking on any file in Nautilus. Nautilus just freezes and sometimes Mutter notifies me about the freeze and asks if I want to kill nautilus.
When opening Nautilus in a shell I don't get any specific error messages...
    Any ideas?

Ok, I did some further research:
The problem is definitely related to tracker and can (temporarily) solved by uninstalling tracker. There are two corresponding bug reports on the bugzillas of Novell and GNOME.
Although one post on the Novell bugzilla claims
JFYI, the tracker patch has been included in GNOME:Apps. I think it'll be in
    GNOME:STABLE:3.0 soon.
the corresponding bug report at the GNOME tracker is still "UNCONFIRMED".
So hopefully a future update will fix the problem...

Any ideads how this can be fixed or what's the problem?

  • [SOLVED] Random freeze at poweroff / suspend.

«poweroff» command works from time to time.
When it does not work, it goes all the way to the end, prints „[42…] Power down.“ (looks like dmesg message), parks harddrive heads, and stays on (with screen on and this message shown).
«pm-suspend» (and «s2ram») also works sometimes, but most of the time it turns off the screen, parks harddrive heads, and stays on with fan spinning and leds in normal (working) state.
It depends on something (luck?), sometimes suspend and resume works with pm-suspend. But most of the time it hangs on suspend, so it is not usable.

Solved by updating to linux 3.0 and disabling plymouth (via removing „splash“ from grub.cfg).
This didn't work separately. kernel26 2.6.39.3 without plymouth gave a freeze, and linux 3.0 with plymouth gave a freeze.
    Everyone, thanks for help.

  • [SOLVED]lxappearance freezing

    Hi!
I had a problem with lxappearance and lxde. Even if I install it on the clean installation of arch, it made desktop to freeze if I start it with lxsession, but works fine with other desktop enviroments. Is it a bug? I tested to start openbox and then lxsession after that lxappearance... freeze, but when I start openbox -> lxappearance -> lxsession then no problems untill I reopen lxappearance. When it freezes I could go to another tty and kill lxappearance and go back, but if I wait too long time untill I kill it... then it doesn't help. I wrote much more details about this problem in another linux forum with no answers. Just try my username+lxappearance in a search engine. There are too many steps and details about everything I did. I hope the referense is not violating the policy. And thank you for any help you can provide.

Yes, it maked it as solved because I did it on the clean Arch installation with no positive result, then I decided that it is a bug and closed thread, it was too long wating time for answers there anyway for this big problem for me. I should be writng about that problem here from the begin because it's related to Arch and probably a bug and it's is better to solve Arch bug problems here. It is only a few days ago I became a member of the Arch forum and I hope you can help me more with this problem. link
I might told too much when I refered to other forum. I will never more refer or write about Arch problems in other forums.
Short way to describe the problem is:
Arch clean install -> lxappearance in lxsession = freezing = bug?

  • Solved Safari Freeze Issue

A lot of people have posted here about having certain myspace pages freeze in Safari, and I came across a solution that works for me. Open Windows Media Player/Preferences, and under the Security tab, check "Do not run script commands when running in web page". Big problem solved!!

    Hey y'all!
I got the solution! Just restart you mac in safe mode once (holding down shift key while startup), try some of the sites that would've freezed your mac, they should work now.. then restart again!! That's it!
    found here:

  • [SOLVED]System freezes when trying to suspend

    Hi everyone,
I have a hard time to make suspend-to-ram working. Under Debian a
    echo mem > /sys/power/state
would put my computer to sleep without any problems. On Arch the same command freezes the system. Both screens stay on and show exactly the same picture as before entering the command, but the system is completely unresponsive and the only way to use it again is to turn off the power and reboot.
I then tried to suspend using uswsusp (s2ram), after installing it as described in the wiki. This yields exactly the same results. I have also tried all of the options for s2ram (-f -p -s etc.) listed here.
    My system is as follows:
    Arch x86_64
Mainboard: EP43-S3L (Note: the options listed here don't work either)
Graphics card: ATI RADEON HD 5800 (using the catalyst driver)
I suspect that I have overlooked something and that it isn't really a problem with my hardware, as (like I said) suspend worked flawlessly under Debian.
Thank you very much for your help!

Problem solved. Turns out, there was nothing wrong with the suspend process itself, rather it was the catalyst driver causing the trouble.
I fixed this by adding nomodeset and vga=0 to my start-up options in GRUB's menu.lst.
    kernel /vmlinuz-linux root=/dev/sda6 ro nomodeset vga=0
nomodeset disables KMS which was responsible for freezing my system when trying to suspend. As I found out, it also froze when trying to shutdown or to switch from X to a Terminal.
vga=0 disables the framebuffer. When the framebuffer is activated with catalyst, the system will suspend properly but show a black screen on resume.

  • Unplugging peripheral solved my freezing on startup/not sleeping problem

I just wanted to give a heads up to those that are having problems with 10.6 freezing on startup or not going to sleep.
My iMac was freezing on startup--gray screen with the apple logo then freeze. I also found that it wasn't going to sleep--the screen would sleep but the computer would still be running.
I tried everything to solve it, from starting in safe mode to repairing the disk and disk permissions to reinstalling 10.6. I checked my startup folder and nothing was there.
Before doing an archive and install, I simply unplugged my iPhone dock that I had plugged into a USB port on the back.
That seems to have been the problem. Whether it was the dock itself or something is wrong with the USB port, my iMac now starts up and shuts down without incident (and fast too).
Also, I have found that the system will sleep.
So, I guess unplugging a peripheral solved my issue (so far).
Now, when I want to update my iPhone, I simply plug it into the keyboard and unplug it when I'm done.

Several things it could be, but I'd suggest a new hD to start with...

Then a Fresh install of OS9.
