    Hi
I  Installed plasma-next kf5 and so on today. Since the kde base apps like dolphin and kate and konsole weren't available on qt5 I install ed the kde4 versions of them. No matter what I change the theme to those qt4 apps are stuck on oxygen. I have breeze-kde4 installed. Gtk2 and Gtk3 have no issues. Whenever I open dolphin it sticks out like a sore thumb.
I have tried deleting the .kde folder to no effect.

    Hello,
With /usr/bin/qtconfig-qt4  you can choose "Breeze" as GUI Style for qt4 apps.

  • Can I maually check for updates but prevent them from being automatically installed if it turns out one is available?

Can I maually check for updates but prevent them from being automatically installed if it turns out one is available?
    Background:
In options I have "check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them" ticked. This works fine, in that I periodically receive a notice of an available update, and it will ask me whether I want to I want to install it.
But there are certain times -- for reasons I won't go into here (unless requested as part of seeking a solution) -- where I want to manually check for new versions, but RETAIN the ability to decide whether or not to install it. But if I click Help/About Firefox/Check for Updates, and it finds an update, it will immediately proceed to install it without asking for permission. While that seems quite inconsistent with my update preferences in Options, it is apparently normal behavior as described in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/update-firefox-latest-version#w_how-do-i-manually-check-for-updates.
So is there any way I can manually check for new-update availability but then refuse the update if I so choose? Once an unwanted install begins, I'm concerned that if I click cancel I could end up with a partial installation or some "messed up," duplicated or corrupted FF files (e.g., multiple versions appended with (1), (2) etc, similar to what sometimes confusingly happens when I do an XP System Restore).
    Thanks.

I think what needs to be made very clear here is that when a user clicks on "check for updates" the software should bloody well CHECK for updates and most certainly SHOULD NOT proceed to download and apply any updates. this is misleading and intrusive.
I just wanted to check if there was an updated version but I DID NOT want to actually update at that moment. the software downloaded data, costing me money and tried to apply the update which could have potentially messed up my settings if I had not checked everything was ok first.
I actually discovered how to prevent the update by searching through windows and manually deleting the files but why should anyone have to go to such lengths?
the software should simply do as it is asked, not do things that have most certainly not been asked.

  • [PARTIALLY SOLVED] Arch on MacBook4: can't install GRUB

I've been running Arch on my MacBook4 (4 years old now) for quite some time in dualboot mode and have already set up GRUB sucessfully several times. I therefore feel kinda bad that I have to open a new thread this time, but after wasting the whole morning on Google, I don't see another solution.
What has happened is that I had to resize my Linux partitions because there was no space left on my system partition. I have the following partitions:
    sda1 - fat32 EFI partition
    sda2 - hfs+ Mac partition
    sda3 - ext4 Arch system partition
    sda4 - ext4 Arch home partition
As mentioned, when I first organized my Arch partitions this way, I could successfully set up GRUB, but it was GRUB1 which I had to set up via grub shell. Now, as it looks to me, GRUB1 is not available anymore but only GRUB2 which doesn't use the grub shell anymore. I've not been able to install GRUB2 the last time (that's why I ended up using GRUB1) and I'm still not able to install it this time!
When I start the MacBook and choose the Linux partition in rEFIt, I get to a black screen displaying GRUB_ and doing nothing more (because I don't have GRUB set up). That's how far I am right now.
Now can anyone help me with setting up GRUB(2)? Thanks in advance for any help!
Last edited by cryptkeeper (2012-09-05 06:13:14)

I've succeeded in working around the problem of installing GRUB2 after I found out that grub-legary is nothing else but GRUB1. So all I had to do to get back a running system was:
    - removing the GRUB2 installation
    - installing grub-legacy
    - copying my old menu.lst to /boot/grub/
    - grub shell: root (hd0,2); setup (hd0); quit
Now it works like a charm again.
Still I only consider this thread half solved because I still don't know how to install GRUB2 on my system. It's not of vital interest to me anymore (I don't care too much why, that is, due to which boot loader, my system boots, as long as it boots), but a solution would nonetheless be nice since this thread is opened anyway.
So: How can GRUB2 be installed on a MacBook dualboot system with rEFIt such as mine?

  • Please help-cant add apps from ipod can buy them but they dont install

i have a ipod touch, but i cant get apps on my ipod if i buy them on there, i can pay for them but it wont install them. If  plug it in to the comp they will normally go on, but i used to be able to get them straight from the ipod??

    I would try:
    - Resetting the iPod:
Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next reset network settings on the iPod: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings.
    - Next would be to restore the iPod.  However, I would wait on that since maybe Apple is having a server problem.

I need to rebuild my computer which has iTunes synced with my iPhone and iPad.  How do I export all the settings from iTunes so I can import them into the new install and not have to go through all the setup again?  My music library is my own and on a NAS drive so not going to lose it.  I am mainly concerned about setup parameters.  Thank you for any assistance.

    There's nothing to export.
The iTunesLibrary.itl file contains all the settings, playlists, and playcounts.
Copy or backup all your important files including the ENTIRE iTunes folder, then restore all your data including the ENTIRE iTunes folder once the system is formatted and rebuilt/reloaded.

  • Aperture can't be installed on "Macintosh HD" because Mac OS X version 10.10 or later is required.

    Hi
I have two MacBookPro, and Installed Yosemite to the other of them.
Since my Mac stopped working well, I do not attend to install Yosemite to the other Mac, but I keep my old Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63).
    So here is the problem:
"Aperture can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because Mac OS X version 10.10 or later is required."
What is the workaround for this problem?
    Thanks!

Re: How do I reinstall an older version of Aperture from the App Store?in response to léonie | This solved my question
    @léonie
Thanks for your help with this. I've downloaded the latest RAW support updates supported on my machine - V4.09 that seems to contain all of the RAW formats for previous updated including V4.06, which includes the NEX 3N, my camera. After a short while (there seemed to be some sort of background processing ging on in Aperture) it started to allow my NEX 3N photos to be viewed. Some of the thumbnails were corrupted, but if I made a slight edit in each of these files, the thumbnails updated and all was well.
Prior to this, I raised a call with Apple, because the inability to reinstall software from the App Store that I've purchased from in App Store to a machine that supports OSX 10.7.5 and no later strikes me as a problem. I need to know that if my Time Machine backup fails and I need to reinstall, I've got somewhere I can go.
The support people at Apple were very helpful, and it feels like they recognise this as a problem, and are working to resolve it behind the scenes. The App Store will not allow me to download the last version that works on my machine at the moment, but it sounds like Apple is thinking about how to do this. In the meantime, they are shipping me a copy of Aperture 3.0 on CD, and sending me a registration code. This will solve my immediate problem.
This does make me wary about using the App Store for purchases in the future. I don't upgrade my hardware that frequently - I have no real need to as it just keeps working - and so not having physical copies of installation media for when the applications stop supporting my OS is a worry. On the face of it, maintaining prior versions of the software for older machines to download from the App Store seems like a reasonable solution, but they are not there yet, and there is no real commitment for them to do this. Anyone who doesn't back up their Apps in Time Machine (probably the majority of users) could loose them altogether when Apple moves on, and cuts app support for older OS versions.
Thanks to @léonie and @Frank Cagianno for your help.
