[Solved]Brightness changing by itself / Samsung brightness

Hello friends,
I have a rather strange issue with my laptop (Samsung NP300V5Z). GNOME or KDE, no difference at all, so I presume it's kernel/hardware related. My brightness maxes out when:
1. In KDE, when I click on the battery widget in systray (which is a known KDE bug) OR totally random.
2. In GNOME 3, totally random.
Using laptop-mode-tools helps a bit, because I choose it over KDE's powerdevil, so the bug is not so visible. One other thing worth mentioning. My Fn keys for brightness work half-way; they will only decrease/increase brightness by 1 (out of 7 max). Sound, wlan, touchpad Fn keys work without problem.
I will provide whatever info you might need.
Arch x64 latest, KDE 4.8, Gnome 3.2.1 kernel 3.2.2-1

Something happened and brightness is doing fine now, changing when I want it (except for a known KDE bug). One more thing still bothers me; my hotkeys for brightness are not working.
I opened xev and pressed the combinations, here is the output:

  • Macbook Pro 15" volume level changes by itself

    Hi all!
    About a month ago I have upgraded my rock-solid Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2012) from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. All seemed fine (with the exception of some known annoyances with WIFI) until last week when all of a sudden the volume level started to change by itself. It started going up and down, turning mute and turning on again and so on, just like an invisible hand or a remote access have taken control of my machine (it wouldn't even let me change the the volume using the volume buttons while this weirdness is happening). This has never happened before. To make things worse, I have then upgraded to Yosemite and all seemed fine but then the weird volume changes appeared again and I now am stuck with no straight forward way of reverting all the way back to the original Lion (which worked perfectly since Mac purchase back in 2012).
    Can anyone help?
    I have googled for similar issues and have seen  some answers (mostly not that relevant) including a thread on this forum suggesting to reset the SMC. I have tried that using the suggested key-combination press, but it did not seam to have solved the problem, as the volime changes continue when I least expect it.
    Is this a hardware problem? If so, would a change of the keyboard resolve things?   [ At some stage I thought maybe the problem was caused by the fact the I have fiddled a little bit with the keyboard by lifting the :; key (next to L and under P) and applying a bit of WD40 to clean a tiny spil of sugary liqid that caused the key to get sticky.  But the volume keys are way far on top of keybord so my assumtion was/is that the volume changes would not be related to the cleaning. ]
    is this a software problem? Some thread on similar (not identical) issues had suggested there are some bugs in soft and Apple is aware. For this reason I gave Yosemite a go but the problem continues. Would reverting to Lion sole the problem you think?  [ Maybe I should ask here if anyone can suggest how to go about this downgrade as Option-Cmd-R key-combination press at start up does not give me the Interner Recovery scree anymore, but keeps taking me (just like Cmd-R) straight to the OSX Utilities where can wipe of the disk (which I did) and reinstall Yosemite only. ]
    I would very much apreciate any replies that might help me solve this issue.

    The keyboard of my MacBook changed by itself.
    I have a US keyboard, now i do not know to what it changed.
    I never connected an external keyboard or even changed the setting.
    Since then, the NumLock does not lit anymore as well.
    Anybody has an idea what it can be???

    Just to kill my couriousity:
    Did you do another installation or you still using the original installation out from the box.
    If you did do another OS installation which country you select and which keyboard layout you choose?
    Try to go to system preference > Keyboard and mouse > Keyboard short cut > Restore default.
    system preference > international > input menu > click on :use one input menu in all document
    (US -- keyboard -- Unicode should be the only on that checked)
    system preference > format > Region : United States
    currency > US dollar
    Hope that will sort things out.

  • Will the penfailure be solved after changing the cartridges? Installing printer again did not help.

    Yes, I did try it.
    I completely uninstalled Firefox (including personal settings, bookmarks, add-ons etc.) and then I installed Firefox 24 from scratch. The outcome is unchanged. Namely, it installs it and then right when it is about to start for the very first time, it hangs. If I run the task manager I can see the process firefox32. It shows as if it is running. But in fact it is hanging doing nothing. It is almost as if the process is waiting for something to happen and that never occurs. Note that this should not have anything to do with, say, an incompatible add-on/plug in because I had them all removed. I also removed adobe flash prior to the installation and run the malware removal program too.

    Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts - select the account, then go to Advanced and deselect "Automatically detect and maintain account settings".

    Go to supportprofile.apple.com and remove your device. Alternatively you can call in to apple and have Apple look up your phone number. They may be able to remove it from their end.
    If it does not show up in either of these places, have the people whe own the other iPhone send you a message> this message will be blue for an iMessage> have them push an hold on that message and select the option "send as text"> this should send the message as green> do this two - four time till it starts sending as green on its own.> this should fix it.

    I would like to avoid itunes change by itself metadata such artist album, writer,comments,cover artwork. I don't want to use these informations but itunes provide to fill them even I didn't check the "find name tracks nor get album artwork". Thank you very much

    Perhaps I wasn't clear. iTunes does not get info from the internet unless you are ripping from a CD and it queries the Gracenote/CDDB database. Itunes is too stupid to update songs automatically once they have been added to your library.
    I saw the exact same thing as you described, hex numbers in the comments field such as "000B 0A4D  302C...."and it was caused by a WMP update and the settings going back to default. It also filled in composer information, Album Artist, and deleted the track x of y information.
    You may think itunes is doing it because these changes also show in itunes after WMP has done its work.
    If WMP is still doing this, make sure those options are turned off for all Windows user logins on the PC.

    Since installing 10.9 the dashboard background changes by itself between a checkered one and a plain gray one. What gives? Is this a bug? Anyone know how to fix this?

    You can go around that, if you don't like those grey variations. You could put a wallpaper, maybe the same one you use as your desktop wallpaper. Looks much better.
    Simply find a picture that you like (in png format) duplicate it. You need two of the same picture.
    Name one dbgrid.png and name the other [email protected]
    Drop those into the folder: system/library/coreservices/Dock (right click and click show package contents)/contents/resources. You will have to input your password to verify.
    Then open Terminal and type:" killall Dock " (no quotes) and return.
    A three finger sweep up should show you your new dashboard background.

    Hi,
    My current system keeps changing the brightness on a number of system events:
    - wake-up from suspend
    - power cable inserted
    - power cable removed
    So every time I keep changing my brightness back to a usable level.
    There is some activity in upowerd, so I assume upowerd is either responsible or used by some other system component.
    Can you tell me where and how I can change this behavior?

    So here's what I did:
    Disable Upowerd by moving the config out of  /etc/dbus-1/system.d & restart
    => On the events mentioned, the brightness still get's updated, but to a different--much more acceptable--level.
    So let's be sure:
    Activate Upowerd again, by moving config back & restart
    => The brightness is still on the same acceptable level.
    Yay, problem solved! Or is it?
    Some hours later, my brightness was again updated to darkness on any of the events. -.-'
    So I assume that somewhere under the hood, there is an "update-brightness" that is used for any of the events mentioned. And somewhere else there is a "mysterious process" changing the "update-brightness" on some events (possibly on low battery power).
    At this point I have no idea where either "update-brightness" or "mysterious process" are, but I would assume that it is related to systemd. (The developer of my WM, qtile made it clear that they are not changing the levels. The BIOS also does not have any configurable brightness option.)
    If you have any hints on "update-brightness" or "mysterious process", I would be happy to try them .
    @Name Taken: Yeah hacking the thing would be a possiblity. Not my favourite, though. It s-h-o-u-l-d be so simple.
    EDIT: So it's definitely independent of UPowerd. And it is not related with low battery levels.

  • [Solved]Brightness control doesn`t work anymore

    I`ve made my 3rd update of Arch since installation, and... where previous two succeeded, the third one failed. It messed up my system
    The problem is, i cannot change brightness any more through my function keys (and since i`m using Openbox as my DE, i cannot change it at all ). The brightness now is so low that i can barely see what i am typing. And it is not only in my Arch, it also messed up Windows and everything else: grub, bootup screen where i can select bios properties - everything.  I ran xev and now i see that FN+Right/Left are not detected anymore as brightness keys. It says:

The problem is that the system is completely unusable at this point, since i barely see anything on the monitor, and that sucks

    I can't see what you did in Arch affecting your windows installation at all.  If you try to boot into windows and increase the brightness (since most laptops store the brightness level of the laptop as it was set, on battery, at least my 2 laptops do), does the new brightness level "stick" for all things?  If so, the only issue you have is to re-map the function keys properly, and to configure a script or something to increase/decrease lcd brightness.  You can make a simple script that echoes a value into your /proc/acpi/video/LCD/brightness file (the file path will vary, so it may be under UVGA or so).  If, however, it doesn't increase again, it may very well be a hardware issue, and not a software (since, as I said above, it's highly unlikely that an Arch update has affected Windows in any way).

    Almost everything works perfectly, but I have one weird issue.
    I can control backlight of my display via ACPI; I wrote a simple script for it:

    among others like touchpad toggling, volume control, etc (which are working without issues)
    And now, guess what... Those keys fire that script, change the brightness and after second or less - it comes back to old value! You can see that display blinks (for example gets brighter and moment after - it goes back to previous state).
    I tried to debug it, putting to the script something like:

    echo $((ACT+STEP)) > $DEV
    cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness >> /tmp/br.log
    sleep 1

    And the first entry was that what it was supposed to be, while te other (second after) Was again the old value.
    Does anybody have any idea what "reverts" my changes to the /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness and why it works without issues when simply run from a terminal?

    I think that I've found partial answer.
    When I changed key binds to another keys - it works!
    But even then, when I press XF86MonBrightnessUp or XF86MonBrightnessDown, the brightness level gets reset. And now they are not bind to anything (at last not explicit).
    So it looks that I have to found how to decouple the internal, not working as expected, bind to these keys.
