[SOLVED] Broken backlight brightness adjustment on x220 after recent-

Hi.
I'm no longer able to adjust backlight brightness with hotkeys and xbacklight.
I believe issue appeared after update to linux-3.16.
Brightness adjustment keys are detected correctly in xev.
Echoing brightness value to /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness does adjust brightness.
But xbacklight and hotkeys won't do a thing.
I already tried some magic I don't understand: acpi_backlight=vendor and acpi_osi=linux. No luck here.
Anyone else with the same issue? Are there any fixes for this?
Thanks in advance.

I saw a brief mention in the arch wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Backlight
that says the kernel parameter: video.use_native_backlight=1 is now default in 3.16,
so I added video.use_native_backlight=0 to my kernel parameters and my backlight functionality is back.
awesome thx, worked for me as well. I used the -u option of efibootmgr
efibootmgr -c -d /dev/sda -p 1 -L Gentoo3.16.3-rev1 -l "\efi\boot\kernel_3.16.3-rev1.efi" -u "video.use_native_backlight=0"

Hi, i recently updated to Windows 10 and immediately noticed that the brightness of my laptop could not be adjusted. i had a similar problem when updating to Windows 8.1 but managed to solve it by downloading video drivers from the following link: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds031547  I tried the same method to solve my current problem but it only works temporarily, as the next time i turn my laptop on, i have the same problem. Is anyone experiencing the same problem and has anyone found a permanent fix, because it's getting quite annoying. Thank you.

The intel HD graphics bundled with windows 10 seems to be buggy and in beta for now. so i guess we just have to wait for intel/microsoft to make a final release

Not the case. HAL still works fine with the latest udev. The issue must have been elsewhere.

  • [SOLVED] Thinkpad T430 brightness keys broken after firmware upgrade

    Hi.
I've upgraded the firmware on my Thinkpad to version 2.51. Since that I'm unable to change the display brightness via the Fn-Keys on the keyboard. What still works is writing values to /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness but of course that's not how it should be.
    Here's some dmesg output:

Any idea why it's broken and how it can be fixed?

Awesome, the acpi_backlight=vendor kernel command line parameter actually fixed it.
Does anybody know what exactly has changed and why this in necessary now?
Update: If you do this, you'll get error messages like this in your log/dmesg every time you press a brightness key:
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: unknown possible thermal alarm or keyboard event received
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: unhandled HKEY event 0x6050
kernel: thinkpad_acpi: please report the conditions when this event happened to [email protected]
The kernel command line parameter acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" also works and seems to be the better way to fix this.
    Bugreport at kernel.org: https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51231
tl;dr: Firmware update introduced 101 brightness levels even though the hardware only supports 16 but Windows 8 requires this. Reducing or increasing the brightness by one doesn't change anything at all so the firmware will still report the old value as the new brightness thus it'll never actually change the brightness. But if you explicitly tell the firmware that you're not Windows 8, it will only report 16 brightness levels and everything works fine. Lenovo, seriously?

  • Backlight brightness acting strange after 10.5.3 update...

After I upgraded my MBP to 10.5.3 the backlight brightness has been acting very strange, is like it has its own life and change the brightness when ever it feels like. Its very annoying from have full brightness and then all of a sudden it reduces to half.
Anyone got any idea what could be the problem? I've tried without the "automatically adjust brightness as ambivalent light changes but its no good.
Also Safari.app is acting very slow and crashes all the time after the 10.5.3
    Thanks in advance

Yes, You should have a previous system folder after an archive and install.
Can you backup everything to a second HD? Or, were you running Time Machine (a good idea). If you can, then you can safely delete many things from the previous system folder. Or, at least enough to begin testing to see if your apps work.
I routinely do and A&I when I upgrade. Then I test all my apps (or at least the important ones and a sample of the lesser ones). I move the previous system folder to a spare disk and keep it around for a few weeks incase I need to copy something over (like fonts).
BTW, I suspect your start up disk is out of space, not memory. Again backing stuff up, particularly on a laptop is a very sound idea and also allows you to manage your stuff better -- older stuff goes on the backup. Despite some problems, Time Machine works well for this as do a number of commercial products.

  • Windows 8 Pro Upgrade Problems (Switchable Graphics, Screen Brightness Adjustment, etc.)

Hi guys! I hope you can help me with this.
My laptop is a Lenovo U400 bought last April. I upgraded it yesterday to Windows 8 Pro.
The Upgrade Assistant detected incompatibilities on the following softwares (I'll be mentioning only those I had problems with after the update.)
    -AMD Catalyst Install Manager
    -Catalyst Control Center
    -Lenovo Energy Management
    -Cypress Trackpad
After the update, the following problems occurred
-Windows kept prompting me about the incompatibility of Catalyst Control Center and Lenovo Energy Management
-When I check the Device Manager -->Display Adapters, My AMD Radeon HD 6470M was changed to HD 7400M and has an exclamation point on it indicating a problem. When check Properties it says, "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
-I can't manage switchable graphics because the AMD Radeon driver has been stopped by the OS and Catalyst Control Center doesn't work. It says, "Catalyst Control Center cannot be started. There are currently no settings that can be configured using Catalyst Control Center."
-My touchpad works but does not support multitouch functions.
-Screen brightness adjustment stopped working both on hotkeys and Power Options.
I tried the following actions to fix the problems:
-Downloaded the new softwares from Lenovo Support but the Catalyst Control Center and Cypress Trackpad still doesn't work. I also tried installing driver software from the AMD site but it still didn't work. [FAILED]
-I tried to use the Cypress Trackpad software for U300s/e and it fixed the problem with the touchpad [FIXED]
-Installed the Energy Management software for Windows 8 but when I click the 'Optimized Battery Health' button, it keeps reverting back to 'Maximum Battery Life'. [PARTIALLY FIXED]
-Resorted to 3rd party software to fix the Switchable Graphics (Catalyst 12.11 Beta from leshcatlabs.net) and it fixed the switchable graphics problem as well as the Catalyst Control Center problem. This is temporary until a working solution or update is available. [TEMPORARILY FIXED]
-All actions trying to fix the Screen brightness adjustment didn't work. [FAILED]
Please do help me on this. Thanks in advance!!!

Yes I own U400 too and I'm using it now. To many forums been read, can't remember which one. Basically, u have to clean AMD and Intel drivers that come along with Win 8. Why? Because the Win8 driver database will lead the device ID "DEV_6760" (if you looking at display adapter device properties) to HD 7400 series instead of HD 6470M, again why? At the bigining only the HD 7400 series already "certified" by Microsoft, while the 6470M out of somewhere. Current CCC (or else) + 6470 drivers, contain also driver for 7400 series in same packages (at least until now, hopefully near future they will release an update). So you can gues where the windows will lead to? Yes 7400 series (certified one). This will explain also why the Energy Management didn't work to= "missing identifier" or we can say "hardware not match".
You have to find a "fix" driver which contain only HD 6470M and install it manually trhu "Have Disk" option, after you claan all AMD and Intel driver. If you success, then install the CCC from Lenovo Support and from ATI ( I use 12.11 Beta8 Net4 CCC - this is a must), but remember to unchek the AMD Display driver when you install both CCC, and leave the rest checked including Intel Component. Then you can download install anything you want =).
Leschat's driver did't work on my and "harm" the system. Believe it or not, I found the AMD 6470M standalone driver on HP website. They call it "SoftPack", which actually contain CCC software.
It's quite tricky thing, that's why not everyone willing to try. But I think it's worth to try, as the risk is not too deep, just backup anything befor you do it. Cheer

  • No Brightness Adjustment, F1 & F2 No Longer Work

I'm puzzled because my PB 17" 1.67ghz display preference pane and F1 and F2 keys will no longer work to adjust the LCD screen brightness. When I purchased the laptop used, Leopard was installed and the brightness adjustment worked. To save hard disk space and run classic, I wiped the hard drive and installed Tiger (10.4) and then ran updates (10.4.11). When I boot in Leopard, the keys work, in Tiger they don't. I don't have the original restore CDs. Is there any thing that I can do to get the pb to recognize the LCD and offer brightness adjustment? Thanks.

I have a dual-boot black MacBook where F1-F2 adjusts brightness just fine in 10.5, but if I boot 10.4 pressing F1 or F2 (or fn-F1 or fn-F2) all do absolutely nothing.
Details below. I did the keyboard-firmware update in 10.5 by the way. Details below.
Does anyone have a work-around for adjusting screen brightness, even a commad-line method?
Details and steps taken: newly-arrived black macbook April 2008 with 10.5 factory installed.
    1. Booted 10.5, ran all updates, including the keyboard-firmware update, fixed perms, and verified boot disk.
    2. Using 10.5 disk-util, did non-destructive resize of 10.5 partition from entire drive (120gig) down to 76gig. Created 2 new partitions: tiger (50gig), and TimeMach (22gig). After reboot leopard is running find from resized partition, and I zeroed-out the other (Erase, writing zeroes in 10.5-disk-util).
    3. Booted new macbook in target mode. From another black mac-book running 10.4.11 with ALL updates, ran CCC-3.1 to copy tiger to empty tiger partition on new mb.
    4. Booted new mb, holding down option, and selected tiger partition. Everything works in Tiger as far as I can tell except I can't adjust brightness.)
    Go figure.

  • Brightness adjustment in Windows 8 does not work properly on rMBP

Finally Apple has released 10.8.3 and the new bootcamp officially supports Windows 8. I have used it for several days but only one little thing. I don't know if this happens to other users.
The brightness adjustment just has three levels. Dark, level 1 brightness and level 2 brightness. The screen cannot be brighter after these levels. Also there is no Apple brightness level figure showing, instead the windows 8 brighness level figure shows, and the screen goes dark when the brightness level bar goes only half way down.
Here is the example. If I hit the brightness minus button again, the screen goes dark.

Oh I know what the problem is. I tried to uninstall the light sensor driver and everything works fine! In Windows 7 I used to disable the light sensor feature so there was no such problem. I tried to find such setting option in Windows 8 but nothing found so I just uninstall the driver.

  • Brightness adjustment in Final Cut Express HD.

    Dear members;
I have a clip that is a little dark and I would like to make it brighter. I've tried the levels adjustments for the black and white points. While it has improved a bit I still feel that I need to improve it more.
After trying the brightness adjustment in Final Cut Express I found that the clip looked too washed out and the colors became somewhat lifeless. The contrast and brightness adjustments combined didn't produced very good results either. This is the route I would have taken with a digital still photo but it doesn't seem to be working with my clip.
What am I doing wrong ? Is there a way to improve the brightness so that the clip doesn't look washed out and the colors still look good ? How can I make this adjustment ?
    Thank you in advance,
    Joseph Chamberlain

    Hi Ian:
I haven't tried the gamma filters yet. I will give it a try.
This may be the case you describe (a shot that can't be saved or improved) but I would like to think that it can. The footage is from a movie and I extracted a 20 sec clip to include in a presentation.
Since you mention both, what are the differences between the Gamma and Gamma correction filters ?
Also, how can I post a screenshot to this list as you suggested ? Is there a page on this web site where photos can be posted for members of this discussion groups ?
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Under Tiger 10.4 Brightness Adjustment Doesn't Work, Powerbook 17"

After trying Leopard, I decided to go back to Tiger. After installing 10.4 on my Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz the brightness adjustment in the system preferences and the F1 F2 keys do not work. Brightness adjustment is not available even after running all the updates through 10.4.11. If I return to Leopard, the brightness adjustment works again. Any one have any ideas on how to fix it in 10.4? [I don't have the original restore disks]. Thanks.

Not certain, but PRAM or NVRAM resets might do it...

  • IPhone 5 brightness adjustment

Since short, iPhone 5 does not allow to change the brightness, neither in general settings nor inside the app like e.g. iBOOKS (although AUTO brightness in settings disabled). Screen stays very bright and the battery is drained fast. Strange enough - if I open the KINDLE app, I can adjust the screen brightness to very dark. Recently changed battery. Currently on IOS 8.0.2., reading the community I was a bit afraid to update to 8.1.1. Tried restart, reset, back to the factory settings. Anyone has an idea about where the problem can be resp. how to solve it? Thanks, Ales

No current way to adjust the gain. I hope this will be added really soon since I am unable to use my new phone at work becuase people complain about the backgorund noise.

  • Zen Xtra Backlighting Brightness Prob

The backlighting on my new Zen Xtra seems to be woefully dark. I have changed the contrast again and again, but it does nothing to brighten up the screen. It does adjust the contrast between the background and the text, but the lighting itself is very dim. I have gone page by page in the cd manual and there is nothing that addresses backlighting brightness.
Is there something I am missing? Or is the screen very dark for everyone?

Well, it's not as bright as an iPod's screen, for example.
I searched around for some pics about what it should look like (since I don't have access to a digital cam to photograph mine)
