[Solved by moving to Ubuntu] VirtualBox freezes the entire system

Hello everyone,
I have some major issues with VirtualBox, I have recently installed it for the first time, but it just randomly freezes my entire system. There shouldn't be any load on the processor for this to happen. I don't really know what the cause is. I tried both Windows XP and Windows 7 as guest systems with the same sad outcome. The host and guest freeze and I have to do a hard restart. There always is some noise that comes from the sound card and, in the case of VMWare, from the case speaker.
I tried disabling AMD-V - using a Phenom II x4 955 - but it didn't work. I also tried adding nohz=off to the grub line but it also didn't work. I have recompiled the kernel modules after the last kernel update - 2.6.32. I can't really say whether it's only related to the last kernel update or not as I only started using it after the update.
It seems that I have similar issues with VMWare player.
Here's my system information:
Arch64
Kernel 2.6.32
Phenom II x4 955
4 GB of ram
Virtualbox 3.1.2-2 from the AUR
This only issue occurs with VirtualBox and VMWare, I did test the memory and it's okay. I also have plenty of fans - 2x120mm + 2x80mm - and my system temperature (using k10temp) never goes above 48 c under load. So, it isn't an issue with overheating.
Does anyone have any similar issues? Do you have any suggestions for this?
Thanks!

Should I ask to have this thread moved to the 'Pacman & Package Upgrade Issues'? Will anyone be able to help there? I am seriously starting to consider downgrading the kernel once again and seeing whether it will work.
Does anyone have a machine with another 64-bit distro with this kernel version? If so, can the problem be replicated there? I don't know whether this is really related to Arch or the kernel. Should I file a bug report somewhere? and if so, where can I do it?
http://www.archlinux.org/news/477/
May it be related to the xen support that has been added to Arch64?

  • Safari pinwheels and freezes the entire system.

Safari pinwheels and freezes the entire system.
I've read numerous threads with this Safari pinwheeling theme, but none of the posted solutions I've found work for me.
    The problem:
Safari will almost always on opening, and frequently when filling in forms on websites, start pinwheeling. The whole system then slows down, and then eventually freezes. Even the dock bar freezes. When this happens, I can't even bring up the Force Quit bar. The freezing will often last several minutes, then all of a sudden, all my various previously ignored mouse and key clicks cycle through. When Force Quit finally starts, then everything freezes again. Eventually, Force Quit will show Safari as not responding, and once in a while the system then will start responding, but usually I have to kill Safari.
The problem subsided a little bit on the opening the application problem when I switched my start page from Apple.com to Google.com, thinking that maybe it was just too much graphics crap coming in on the Apple site.
The problem happens on both my Airport and cell modem network connections.
I may have seen this behavior once with Firefox, but haven't been able to reproduce it.
Generally I only have a few things running: Excel, Messenger, Safari.
Things I've tried to fix this:
    Reset Safari
    Clear Safari Cache
Delete Safari folder in the system cache folder
Went into the Energy Saver in Preferences and unchecked, "put disk to sleep when not in use" for both the battery and power adpater settings
    Limit number of tabs open
I'd try restarting Safari occasionally, but the problem usually happens on opening.
I've emptied the trash, and made sure there is ample open disk space (10gb right now).
    Resolved duplicate fonts.
I have no third party apps to affect Safari or networking.
I've reset the machine by unplugging it and holding the power button.
My computer is a MacBookPro 15" with all the latest software and firmware updates and 2gb RAM. This has become so frustrating, it's been very tempting to just throw the laptop at the wall and go back to my Windows laptop...

I'd say the bad blocks were behind the problems you were seeing. Their existence points to either a defective HD, or directory corruption. The latter usually can be repaired by using a Utility such as Disk Warrior, or as you did, reformatting the drive.
Best approach to minimizing directory problems is to do routine maintenance twice a month. Have a look at this MacWorld article for suggestions.
For routine maintenance I use OnyX. There is no charge for the software, but I believe the developer asks for a donation.
It's very easy to use. I run it twice a month. Once it is installed, you would double click on the OnyX icon in your application folder (or drag an icon to your dock for quick access) to open the application. After entering your administrator password, you would select "automation". The panel looks like this:
Select the same items I have checked. The program takes about 5 to 10 minutes to run. Leave your computer alone, that is, don't use it for anything else until OnyX is finished. Once complete, restart the computer and you're good to go.
Lastly, the most effective maintenance is having a full backup of your system on an external hard drive. All machines fail eventually, despite the best maintenance. If you had a hard drive failure without any backup, then you would lose all your information, including documents, images, songs, etc. Not a pretty picture.
For your system, you would purchase either a USB or Firewire Drive for your new Intel Machine. The key here is creating a "clone" backup on the drive, which you back up regularly, or at least once a week. For the backup process I use SuperDuper. Very easy to use. The initial backup takes about 1 to 2 hours. Subsequent backups take 5 to 10 minutes. Total $$$ investment can be anywhere between $100 - $250 depending on the size of your Hard Drive.
Post back if you need any other information relative to your questions here.

  • Premiere Pro CC2014 freezes the entire system

New Mac Pro - late 2013
    PP CC 2014
    OS 10.9.3
Recent convert from FCP7.  Basically can't get any work done.  PP hangs up and causes the entire machine to hang up, requiring a hard restart.  This sometimes happens as previews are being loaded, sometimes when doing actual work, somethings when just moving the playhead around.  Working with Red footage from 4-6k.  I have trashed prefs multiple times and followed the 13 step process regarding sharing and permissions posted here and on Cow.  I have unplugged every peripheral device except for the monitors and a 24TB Pegasus.  Sometimes the machine will be stable for a bit, sometimes it hangs as soon as it is opened.  Getting in 15 minutes of uninterrupted work is a reason to celebrate.  Appreciate your help.

I too recently converted from FCP to Premiere. I was using the the previous version of Premiere Pro CC and it worked great! When I update to Premiere Pro CC 2014, it started crashing routinely. I'm on a Win7 machine with no plug in's and 2014 has not worked on it. I went back to the previous version and all is well .If you are under the gun and need to get some serious work done, I  recommend uninstalling 2014 and downloading the previous version of Premiere.

  • Wicd hangs, freezing the entire system

    Hi everybody.
So, i just installed Arch on my laptop, and everything went fine, more or less. during the installation process, i was using the manual connection method using netcfg which works pretty well. but once i got a desktop manager installed and working (LXDE, in case it matters which i doubt), i thought it would be nice to have a gui front end to make things quicker.
i installed and then network manager (nm applet et al) but there were a bunch of issues so i just uninstalled it and got wicd.
wicd works mostly, but it VERY frequently hangs the system. when i boot up into a gui, it freezes entirely for a few seconds, but then unfreezes again and i'm able to log in. if i open the gui tray thing for it and ask it to scan, disconnect from all, or connect, four times out of five the CPU usage will skyrocket to a hundred percent and i wont even be able to move the mouse or switch to a virtual terminal and i have to power down with the physical switch.
the (/var/log/wicd/wicd.log) shows nothing interesting when its doing that but when i reboot it has a line "Exception KeyError(140400652642048,) in <module 'threading' from '/usr/lib/python2.7/threading.pyo'> ignored". probably nothing.
if i take it out of my daemons array everything is fine. i can connect without it using only the wireless tools package but it would be nice to have it working.
sorry for the long post. anybody know anything about this? the problem also happens when i use wicdcurses too, so it's not just the frontend.

realteck (spelling is wrong) 8188 is the card. i think i was using nm-applet for a very brief while, but it didnt work either (wouldnt connect to wireless) so instead of dealing with it i just went to netcfg, which works quite well indeed.
as for the freezes, occasionally i would be able to get top open before it happened and it said that wicd was using obscene amounts of CPU time right before the system locked up. for whatever that's worth. not much, really. yeah i've never known a linux machine to crash in that way before.
anyway, i would suggest, if you're down with command lines, that you might give netcfg a try for a while. i cant really call that a solution to the problem, but it did work for me and i didnt have to do anything with new kernels or the like.
    good luck

  • Apple Mail freezes the entire system

This just started today after absolutely no problems with my system in the last 20 months of ownership.
This morning I got the spinning beach ball and my computer became completely unresponsive. I could not force quit any apps or switch between them. I thought it was something to do with iTunes because it tends to be less than snappy at start up due to a lot of music and video however, that wasn't the issue. After a few hours of messing about, disconnecting peripherals and turning off time machine it became evident that Apple Mail was causing the trouble.
I'm pretty good at pruning my mail and emptying the trash and I've also used disk tools to repair the disk permissions. I don't save drafts to the server and I don't add invitations to iCal.
I haven't added any new applications and the only recent update was the iTunes update that I installed after the trouble started.
As long as I don't launch Mail, the computer is golden. If I do launch it there is a minimum of 5 minutes of innactivity and at any time it might go awry and cause another 3 - 5 minute period of completely useless innactivity.
Any thoughts? I know Mozilla will take over quite nicely but I don't want to switch mail clients because Apple Mail has been just fine since I started using it with exception to today.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Hi, I haven't actually tried this in 10.6.x, or maybe I have & forgot!
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

  • FCPX crashes the entire system when applying Ken Burns

When applying Ken Burns to an image, when repositioning the start and/or end frame the entire system locks up, not just FCPX. The cursor can still be moved, but other than that the entire system is unresponsive and the only solution is turning off my iMac and rebooting. That is how the problem started, a few days later during the same process the entire screen turns black and rebooting is once again the only way out.
Is anyone else familiar with this problem?

There's a little icon that appears in the Project on top of each picture that has Ken Burns applied, click on that icon (it's a cropping square icon). that will bring up the Inspector and show you the red/green boxes that indicate the area where the zoom starts and ends for Ken Burns. If you drag the edges of both the red/green boxes individually to fit the entire picture, I think you will get the effect of not cropping. But it won't really be Ken Burns either because it won't zoom/pan across the image as it plays back.

  • XMMS freezes the wholw system

xmms plays fine but when i  select the opengl visualization plugin then it freezes the whole system.  NO i can't even do the "C-M-F2/3/4" everything just freezes to hell and the only option is the "Restart button" of cabinet.
though i am using bmp now but i want to know why it happened. earlier i had similar system-freezes when i tried to access any floppy on Voodo.
Voodo i686       ->   floppy access = system Freeze
    Duke x86_64    ->   xmms opengl visulazation-plugin  = system-freeze
only one solution = Restart button of Cabinet  (this way it feels WindowsXP :-(
    any ideas ?

  • Safari and Firefox are FREEZING the entire OS requiring hard reboot.

    Hello new user here.
I have been working on a client computer:
Dual 2.7 G5 Tower with 8GB Ram (early 2005), only mouse and keyboard plugged into USB port.
Installed on new HD with clean install from Leopard 10.5.6 Install Disk. Updated to OS X 10.5.8, all apple updates and firmware updates applied.
ASD for the system PASSED all tests and on multiple loops.
    MEMTEST Passed, no errors
Temperature monitor within safe ranges under 70C for everything.
Temperature Calibration of the chips completed through ASD
No dust in the case, no leaks detected, no evidence of leaks either.
Through diagnostics and testing original components by using replacing with known good components show that the hardware is SOLID. All the tower components passed the Apple Diagnostics and tested as WORKING in other towers.
    Permissions Fix = completed
Deleted the browser preferences, deleted caches, etc etc.
The system is CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN
So when I got to run Safari, it crashes within 1 minute and takes out the entire system with it. Firefox will do the same but in 5 minutes or so. Opera browser WORKS. (But that doesn't solve the problem of why Safari and Firefox are hosing the system.
I also tried this on wired lan, and a wireless lan, and a USB data modem (AT&T), and changed MTU, etc etc etc. The network is SOLID.
I am a 15 year experienced desktop IT tech working on PCs and MACs and I am completely stumped.
I can duplicate it each and every time. Browsing on google, cnn, yahoo, will crash the system.
Here is something odd too. I ran folding at home for > 48 hours on this machine and came back over the weekend and it was FINE. The second I started up a Safari, it crashed that a reboot was required to recover.
    Any ideas? Any help appreciated.

Hi stantony1, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Wow, great work so far!
Temperature monitor within safe ranges under 70C for everything.
Hopefully way under, like under 60°C.?
    MEMTEST Passed, no errors
The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.
    Memtest OS X...
    http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php
Rember is a freeware GUI for the memtest ...
    http://tech.kateva.org/2005/10/rember-freeware-memory-test-utility.html
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Does ȃfari crash it in Safe Mode???
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport in 10.4 & below.

  • How to delay the audio to lip sync? (of the entire system)

I`m using a LED 32" LG screen via hdmi, but the audio is outputing directly via usb to my Mbox Mini, and the image have a small delay (5 frames) but the audio not, so the result is out of sync videos.
Of course there`s tons of apps that can solve the problem by compensating, like VLC and MPlayer X, but the problem is that i`m a video editor and use FCP and Motion all the time. For playbacking with these apps (after making the 5 frames compensation) turns into a perfect results, but during video editing it`s a pain to lip sync.
Of course as i know that the delay is 5 frames, when i output i could delay the entire audio, but it would be a pain making this everytime and for internet streaming the videos would still off sync.
There`s anyway i can delay the audio of the entire system?
    PS: I`m using Lion 10.7,

If you want other activity to take place, you could use a
    timeout object:
    dialogue = window().new("D_XML_Test (Greek2)")
    dialogue.filename = "path to file"
    t = timeout().new("mOpenWindow", 60000, #mOpenWindow,
    dialogue)
    -- #movie script:
    on mOpenWindow aWindow, aTimeout
    if ilk(aTimeout, #timeout) then aTimeout.forget()
    if ilk(aWindow, #window) then aWindow.open()
    end
If you don't mind locking out activity, you could use the
    delay()
function, but I wouldn't recommend that approach

  • I have an Apple Macbook and will be backing up the entire system to an external hard drive utilizing the Time Machine application. when I am doing this, will the data on the external drive that I am using be erased?

I have an Apple Macbook and will be backing up the entire system in order to upgrade to a newer OS. I will be using an external hard drive to do this and there is already data on it. To complete the backup, i will be using the Time Machine application. Does this application wipe out all of the existing data on the external hard drive, or will it create a new "folder" for the backup?
    thank you

No, but as steve359 states you should use a dedicated hard drive for backups. It you need a temporary backup then you can use the drive provided it has sufficient space for all your data on the hard drive.
When Time Machine finds that the drive has data on it already it may decide to erase the drive before continuing, which is another reason to use a dedicated drive.

  • GuiXT  valid throughout the entire system

    <b>GuiXT</b>
I need to customize my VA01 transaction using GuiXT. But I dont want it
to be user-specific on user's PC but throughout the entire system.
The document that i have seen says that put the GuiXT script file on application server
    for the same.
But I have seen that for every user there is Script1 . . Script4
directory setting and this is where the VA01 will look before loading.
So even if I keep the script file on the server, if these Script directory
is not set to the required path, it will not reflect any changes that i have
    made.
SO will i have to go on each user machine and give the path
or is there a way out.

    Hi Flora,
Have you looked transaction code <b>SHD0</b> to create transaction variant to customize SAP screen?
This transaction variant can be applied for user group or individual user.

  • Arch Linux freezes the whole system in VMware

    Hi,
I use Windows Vista as main OS and I'm trying to install Arch on VMware, the problem is, when I log in into the console and try to type anything else, it will crash my host system (Vista).
    This is very weird because:
    a) I'm running a virtual Gentoo on VMware and it doesn't freeze as Arch.
    b) Arch Linux doesn't freeze the system if I use VirtualBox instead of VMware
    c) I did a clean install of XP (just for testing purposes) and virtual Arch also crashed the system.
    This is confusing me because:
    a) Why does Gentoo work and Arch doesn't? Are there base configurations/software so different that one works and the other doesn't?
    b) Why can VirtualBox handle Arch and VMware can't?
    c) Even a clean install can't handle Arch on VMware? Does this mean it's something wrong in my hardware? How come if Gentoo works on VMware and VirtualBox handles Arch?
Please note that I can't use VirtualBox, I must use VMware and I would really like to use Arch instead of Gentoo. I'm trying to ditch Gentoo and use Arch but this problem is leaving me no choice than to keep using Gentoo...
    Any ideas?

Ranguvar wrote:Is it that you can't use VBox, or you must use VMware? There are still other virtual machine apps.
I know, but I want to use VMware. I don't like VirtualBox that much and VMware is better for me. The other virtual machine apps don't even come close to VMware, at least in my point of view. But it doesn't matter, I want to use VMware.
Ranguvar wrote:Anyways, is it the Arch install CD that crashes, or is it Arch after it has been installed? Have you read http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ins … _in_VMWare ?
After installation, it never crashed during the install as far as I remember.
Ranguvar wrote:Do you get any specific error messages from Windows? Are you using the latest version of VMware? Can you at least try VirtualBox to help isolate the problem?
No specific error messages, nothing in the log files, there's nothing anywhere... Yes, I'm using the latest version. What do you mean try VirtualBox to help isolate the problem? I've already used VirtualBox, installed Arch fine and it didn't freeze.
Ranguvar wrote:This is very odd, and may actually indicate a problem with hardware, or something... a virtual machine should NOT be able to bring down the host, under any circumstances. If it can, both the OS and the virtual machine are bugged. Not too much of a surprise, but yeah.
My thoughts exactly but how can be an hardware problem if VirtualBox works just fine? How can it be a virtual machine problem if Gentoo works fine on VMware?
fumbles wrote:Sounds like a problem with VMware (or maybe Vista?) not Arch. Try reinstalling VMware, make sure it is at the lastest version (maybe try even roll back to the previous version), make sure Vista is updated. When you say crash, do you mean BSoD? Or does it just freeze? If it is a BSoD then what is the specific error?
It just freezes, not a BSOD. It is not a problem with Vista because it also happens on XP. Like I said on my first post, I did a clean install of XP, update all drivers and did all Windows updates, installed latest VMware version and the same thing still happened.
Joe_Arch wrote:How much ram are you allocating to Arch? Counterintuitively, you might want to try lowering it. If you allocate too much your host OS freaks out.
I have 2Gb (2x1024Mb) installed on my laptop and I'm using just 256Mb for Arch.
jacko wrote:someone else was having this issue the other day on irc. the fact is a guest OS should NEVER even come close to crashing the host OS. So more then likely this is a bug in VMware and not arch. What arch packages that is causing the conflict with VMware is unapparent, but it's not likely a bug arch can fix.
That was me... I'm not saying it's a bug on Arch, but it's weird that Gentoo doesn't have a problem and Arch does. They must differ somehow, one must use some package where the other doesn't or some global system configuration is different from one to the other, there must be some difference, otherwise, they both would freeze or they both would work...

  • IDVD 4 now freezes the entire computer during burning

    Hello,
iDVD 4 now freezes my entire computer during burning somewhere around stage 3. I can't even force quit. This never happened before - it does so while burning a project that had been burned successfully many times in the past and also new projects. I did have a bad RAM problem weeks ago - which is fixed now. Tried fixing permissions and cleared out enough free space. This is wierd - it has been working for years.
    Thanks very much,
    NIck M.

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

  • Mavericks Issues: Comodo Free-Antivirus Crashing/Freezing the Whole System and Intuos4 Wireless Bluetooth Not Detecting

Hi. Has anyone successfully run Comodo free-anti-virus for the Mac? It crashes, freezes the whole Mavericks that I need to shut the iMac (late 2009) down using the 5 second power button turn off. It would boot and show the desktop and Dock then the beachball just keeps spining and you can't click the Dock nor the icons on the desktop or use the menu.
Also, the bluetooth Wacom4 Wireless used to work fine on Mountain Lion, now Mavericks can't detect it the Intuos4 is in wireless mode (it works fins when the cable's plugged in). Has anyone successfully run the Intuos4 Wireless with Mavericks?
Thank you in advance. Have a great upcoming sunday mass/great upcoming weekend.
    God bless.

Just get rid of Comodo. It didn't do very well when I tested it back in January:
    http://www.thesafemac.com/mac-anti-virus-testing-01-2013/
As for the Wacom issue, you should probably contact the company to see if they have updated drivers. They're probably not fully compatible with Mavericks, for some reason.
