[SOLVED] Can't change laptop screen brightness.

I'm using GNOME and can't seem to change my laptop screen brightness. The slider in settings will work by changing the value in intel_backlight between 0 and 4882 but the actual brightness of the screen will not change.
If I use the kernel line acpi_video = vendor all it does is create another interface called dell_backlight alongside intel_backlight which changes from 0 to 15 by changing the slider or pressing fn  + f5 and fn + f4.
I have nouveau and intel graphics drivers installed and I'm running arch on a Dell XPS15 (L521x).
Any help would be appreciated.
EDIT: Solved this by adding the kernel parameter video.use_native_backlight=0

Yes I have tried this, unfortunately GDM will not start if this is enabled.

I am unable to change my screen brightness using the fn+F2/fn+F3 keys. I understand that it can still be adjusted differently but I want this way to work. Also whenever I change my volume using the fn+F7/fn+F8/fn+F9 keys, the little on-screen display doesn't pop-up any more. I would like to fix this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

and you'll see I'm still waiting and that it's still this way after being assured it would be fixed.
It's not so much it wasn't done but that I was told it would be and it wasn't.

  • Random changes in screen brightness every few minutes (while working)

I am beginning to become unhappy with my new Thinkpad Twist. The laptop was just delivered and no changes to the setup were made.
The screen brightness changes while I use the device in an unpredictable way which is just annoying to me.
I prefer to work with full screen brightness and disabled the energy saving settings that would dim the screen after some minutes of inactivity. Still the screen just dims from time to time (also while I a am working) and also changes back to full brightness in a similarly unpredictable way. Those changes in brightness might take some minutes between them...
Do you have any ideas what software settings I should consider?
Also, the laptop appears to have an ambient light sensor. Could those changes in screen brightness be related to this sensor? FYI: Light conditions remained the same, no turning on or off the lights. Covering the position of the sensor did not induce any reaction.
    Any ideas?

Is the screen-rotation lock on? If it is then there is a padlock shown in the upper right by the battery icon. To turn off double click the Home button and fully swipe the bottom row fully right past the music controls and tap the padlock.
    Otherwise

EDIT: never mind, it seems to of gone away now...i have no idea what happened, it stopped working randomly then started working just as randomly.....whatever...
Just yesterday i was using my laptop with arch linux with the brightness turned all the way down, as of course it saves battery
but now i turn it on today and the screen is at maximum brightness, and every time i try to change it it just says (in kernel.log) :
Sep  8 10:28:46 Polygon kernel: ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness
Sep  8 10:28:46 Polygon kernel: ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness
so...what got upgraded that broke this? does anyone else have this problem?
here is the past few days of my pacman.log: (it has some entries for kernel-my, a custom compiled kernel, but i get no screen brightness control on my custom compiled kernel, or the default arch one)

  • [SOLVED] Can't Change Brightness on Intel VGA

    Hey,
I can't change brightness, either from the buttons on laptop or the slider in power management (default KDE applet). When I try it, the OSD shows brightness changing but there is no actual change of brightness.
    Some info about my laptop:
It's HP Probook 4540s, which has Intel and ATI Radeo hybrid/dual VGA cards. After reading https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hybrid_graphics , I disabled my discrete (ATI) graphic card from BIOS, now:
    $ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Though, I couldn't change the brightness when I hadn't disabled ATI card either. I also have both xf86-video-ati and xf86-video-intel installed.
    Any suggestions?
    Edit: Updated thread title.

In any case, I have the same hardware according to lspci, and I have to use acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" on the kernel command line.  Some people report that using acpi_osi=Linux works as well.  acpi_backlight=vendor somewhat improves the situation, but apparently this is very very strongly discouraged by the acpi people.
If you try the not-windows acpi_osi parameter, you need to make sure you adhere to your bootloader's way of handling double quotes.  If it is grub2, you can simply escape them with backslashes... so it would be acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\".  You might also have to escape the ! as well, but I can't remember, as I don't actually use grub2.  The one that is particularly odd is rEFInd though, as it specifies the use of double double-quotes.
By kernel command line, I am assuming you mean the 'linux' line in grub boot list.
I tried both acpi_osi=\"!Windows 2012\" and acpi_osi=Linux, neither worked. I added them after ro quiet, and pressed F10 to boot, it should boot with the edited entry, right?
Also, there are lots of repetitions of the following messages in dmesg, not sure if they were present before too, or are just appearing after adding that !Windows:
    [ 8427.949528] atkbd serio0: Unknown key pressed (translated set 2, code 0xa7 on isa0060/serio0).
    [ 8427.949537] atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e027 <keycode>' to make it known.
As far as I can figure out, they are for each time I press the Fn+brightness-low/brightnes-high key, or move the brightness slider in applet.

  • Random changes in screen brightness

I just bought a New GT72 last Monday , and today i notice that when i watching video with full screen my screen brightness suddenly changes to darker and when i close my full screen , it became brighter .Anythings that can i adjust ?

Battery saver will sometimes kick in and lower the screen brightness when the laptop is not plugged into electrical plug. If you would rather not plug your laptop in then just press down on the FN key just to the left of the ALT key and then press the up or down arrow to adjust your screen brightness. thanks

    Hi:
Did you install the Intel chipset driver and the applicable graphics driver for your model?
Normally the reason you can't adjust the brightness is due to one or both of those drivers not being installed.

  • Tab & Backspace Keys are changing my screen brightness how do I change this?

I have an iMac that I have had for a couple of years. Suddenly the backspace key and tab key are adjusting the screen brightness and I can't seem to change this, any ideas why this has happened and how I just get screen brightness adjusted by using F1 & F2 keys? I have tried kedyboard shortcuts from system preferences but this doesn't seem to make any difference. Any help really appreciated

As far as I know the language of the two stores on the iPad (iTunes and the App Store) can't be changed - they should be in the language of the country where your account is based (if they aren't correct then try logging out of your account by tapping on your id in Settings > Store and then log back in).
