[SOLVED] Can't get sound working.

The system has onboard sound (EliteGroup GeForce6100SM-M motherboard) which I am not interested in, instead I would like to use my PCI card (Sound Blaster Live! 5.1), but I cannot get either working. And yes, I've already confirmed I am in the "audio" group, and logged out and in since...
I get the following during boot:
[ 4.173534] emu10k1-gp: unable to grab region 0xfdf00020-0xfdf0002f
[ 5.453359] AC'97 0 access is not valid [0xffffffff], removing mixer.
Here's what happens when I try setting up ALSA, along with the troubleshooting output as requested on the Arch Wiki's ALSA page:
$ alsamixer

$ alsaconf
alsaconf: command not found
$ amixer

$ ls -l /dev/snd

crw-rw----+ 1 root audio 116, 33 Mar 26 21:40 timer
$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:252: no soundcards found...
I have tried manually loading the appropriate modules, adding the ALSA Wiki's "Setting up modprobe" block o' text to my modprobe.conf, and reinstalling alsa-utils/alsa-oss/linux. I've tried every bit of troubleshooting I can find, at least the ones that don't already assume I can start alsamixer in the first place. Anything obvious I've missed?
Thanks!
EDIT: Disregard, moved the card to my other PCI slot and it works fine now.

    Hey

    When I enter Audio Setup in KMix and test the "hw: 0,1" option I get playback.
    But I haven't gottten any sound except that. Tried a video in MPlayer and Youtube video in Firefox.
    I'm still abit new to Arch and linux.

    Did what you said. PCM was the only one muted.
    Oddly, I recently started having the opposite problem.  KDE startup and other systems sounds have stopped playing.  All my other sound (mplayer, flash, etc) work fine.  I can play the startup sound fine when opening it via dolphin.  It just doesn't play on startup, or any other system sound.  I know this happened after a recent update but I am not sure what or when caused it.  Startup sound isn't that important to me but fixing it is.  No luck so far.

  • Can't get sound working

    I've been using iChat + iSight to speak to a PC user on AOL.
    When we start a chat, I can see her, and she can see me. Also, she can hear me, but I can't hear her. She's checked her mic is working, and I have my mic setting as iSight, but we can't seem to work out the error.
    I have to confess I'm at work, so don't know the actual version of iChat I'm using - my software updates are up to date, but I bought my mac about 2 years ago, so it might be an older version. I can check this point tonight if its possibly relevant.
    We did chat when she was on a different (older) PC, where we both had video and audio working, but much worse quality - which makes me think the problem is her end.
    Any thoughts/suggestions very welcome - if anyone can at least tell me the obvious settings to use, or downloads to do, I'd appreciate.
    Cheers
    Justin

    Hi Justin,
    If when you open the Connection Doctor in the Video menu and she has a bit rate that is low and a framerate of about 1 fps she will need to do this:
    Click on the tab at the video pic at the rear (her preview)
    Thien she should click the small icon on the right
    Then slide the slider that appears to the left.
    You should see he bit rate and framerate increase.
    Get her to stiop when you can hear her.

  • Can't get sound working on my Pavilion DV7-1245dx! Please Help!

    To start, I do have (fail) Vista,
    For a while now, my touch buttons for the volume on my laptop have stopped working and the mute button is stuck on (ie. it is constantly lit up) and I get no sound. I click the unmute button from the volume control and still no sound. I've tried to uninstall the one sound driver and reinstall it but the sound driver/ ( or whatever) was no longer there after I rebooted the computer and attempted to reinstall. Before I uninstalled the one sound driver I had 3 different devices in the sound portion of the device manager. Now I only have 2, which are: (1) High Definition Audio Device and (2) IDT High Definition Audio CODEC. I have tried to "ADD Legacy Hardware" from the Device Manager in hopes to reinstall the missing device I need but every IDT sound option I tried to install resulted in "My computer was denied the install" or something lame like that.
    Can anyone (or possibly a HP support whom I don't have to pay because I am out of warranty) could help me solve this problem?
    Thank you very much.

    Try reinstalling the Microsoft UAA Driver.

    I solved the problem by replacing
    /etc/systemd/system/netctl\@ethernet\\x2ddhcp.service
    .include /usr/lib/systemd/system/[email protected]
    [Unit]
    Description=A basic dhcp ethernet connection

    with

    Description=A basic dhcp ethernet connection
    BindsTo=sys-subsystem-net-devices-enp0s25.device
    After=sys-subsystem-net-devices-enp0s25.device
    I'm not sure whether this is the best way to solve the problem. If somebody knows a better solution it would not hurt to post it here.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get grub working on UEFI system

    This is for a friend's computer, he wants to keep his Windows 8 installation and dual-boot with Arch.  I installed Arch and followed the wiki to set up GRUB.  Now there is an option for grub in the boot menu, but when I touch it it boots Windows instead of opening GRUB.
    I've never worked with UEFI before, any idea how to go about diagnosing this?

    WonderWoofy wrote:It may be that you have one of the old v1 UEFI firmwares.  If that is the case, it is no surprise that you cannot use the shellx64_v2.efi.  Can you try the v1 shell and see if that works?
    It can happen with early v2 firmwares, too. (e.g. mine.) And the v1 shell doesn't support the command.
    If the computer came with a Windows 8 sticker and is x86 architecture, it certainly ought to be able to disable Secure Boot as this is a requirement MS imposes on OEMs who want to use that sticker on their machines. Have you checked to see if there's a firmware update available?
    The author of rEFInd has a site which I believe includes instructions for different approaches to dealing with Secure Boot.
    EDIT: I don't agree that posts #6-8 are off-topic. I don't think that aspect should be pursued further but if a user comes along and asks "how do I make my own user own the contents of /bin?' it is not off-topic to respond by pointing out that the user ought not be trying to do that. I think it is wrong to install Arch for somebody who could not install it for themselves, and while I could not comment at all, I could not have posted the second part of #6 without posting the first part. This, however, definitely is off-topic.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get ddclient working

    Hi,
    I currently have trouble with configuring ddclient. I have edited the /etc/conf.d/ddclient to the following
    ## ddclient configuration file
    daemon=600
    # check every 600 seconds
    syslog=yes
    # log update msgs to syslog
    mail-failure=xxxx # Mail failed updates to user
    pid=/var/run/ddclient.pid
    # record PID in file.
    ## Detect IP with our CheckIP server

    ## DynDNS username and password here
    login=xxxx
    password=xxxx
    ## Default options
    protocol=dyndns2
    server=members.dyndns.org
    ## Dynamic DNS hosts
    xxxx.dyndns.org
    When i try to start the daemon i get the following output
    >sudo /etc/rc.d/ddclient start
    /etc/conf.d/ddclient: line 6: mail-failure=xxxx: command not found
    /etc/conf.d/ddclient: line 10: web-skip=IP Address: command not found
    /etc/conf.d/ddclient: line 18: xxxx.dyndns.org: command not found
    :: Starting ddclient [FAIL]
    Anyone know how to configure ddclient with dyndns?
    Last edited by munkoil (2010-09-26 12:50:51)

    Indeed, you are not editing the right file. You must edit /etc/ddclient/ddclient.conf and not /etc/conf.d/ddclient (well, you can edit it too, but this is where you add extra args to be passed to the daemon when you start it via the script in /etc/rc.d).
    For example, these are my files:
    /etc/conf.d/ddclient
    # Parameters passed to ddclient
    #EXTRA_ARGS="-debug -verbose"
    EXTRA_ARGS=""
    /etc/ddclient/ddclient.conf
    ## ddclient configuration file
    daemon=1500 # check every 25 minutes
    syslog=yes # log update msgs to syslog
    mail-failure=root # Mail failed updates to user
    pid=/var/run/ddclient.pid # record PID in file.
    ssl=yes # use ssl support
    cache=/var/cache/ddclient/ddclient.cache # cache file
    #use=web, web=checkip.dyndns.com/, web-skip='IP Address'
    use=cmd, cmd=/usr/local/bin/pubip
    ## DynDNS username and password here
    login=my_login
    password=my_password
    ## Default options
    protocol=dyndns2
    server=members.dyndns.org
    wildcard=no
    ## Dynamic DNS hosts
    my-host-name.dyndns.org
    Your 'use' line will be different since I myself wrote a 2 line script to extract the IP address on the web page of my router.

  • [SOLVED] Can't get Ajax working - help

    I am trying to set Ajax up for a media server (hosting professor lectures).
    I am trying to update my mysql, if someone likes a particular lecture.
    However, I am not able to get any response what so ever. I am using an onclick - however, nothing happens. Check the code below - I have set up an if-else, with onreadyState, and for both the conditions (exhaustive), no change happens. Please suggest what I am doing wrong.
    function show_jw()
    var filepath=jwplayer('container').getPlaylistItem().file;
    var xmlhttp;
    xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=function()
    if (xmlhttp.readyState==4 && xmlhttp.status==200)
    document.getElementById("like").innerHTML="file found";
    else
    document.getElementById("like").innerHTML="file not found";
    xmlhttp.open("GET","ajaxphp.php?f="+filepath,true);
    xmlhttp.send();
    </script>
    <input type="button" onclick=show_jw() value="like" />
    on clicking the button, I should either see "file found" or "file not found". I see nothing (on chrome or firefox).
    Last edited by devadittya (2012-01-22 18:33:24)

    Also note that the else statement gets executed even if readyState != 4 which is probably not what you want. Better to implement it as:
    xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=function()
    if (xmlhttp.readyState==4)
    if (xmlhttp.status==200)
    document.getElementById("like").innerHTML="file found";
    else
    document.getElementById("like").innerHTML="file not found";
    More info here: http://www.w3.org/TR/2012/WD-XMLHttpReq … readystate. The entire page is a good read actually.

    I also had a problem at the start of my new install. Unless I put nomodeset on my kernel paramaters, my screen locks up on the login screen. However, the ATI page states that the radeon driver _requires_ kernel mode-setting but if i don't add the nomodeset paramater on booting up my system locks up on the login screen.

  • Can't get sound to work - no /dev/dsp !!!

    I could really do with some help here, this is the first time I have tried to get sound working under linux. I am using a Abit VT6X4 board with on-board sound (VT82C686A) AC97 compliant chipset. I am using Kernel 2.6 which uses the config from the 2.6 package but with added SCSI support. I created the audio group as per FAQ but with ^snd as well as ^sound in the devfsd.conf. I installed all of the ALSA packages, I added snd_via82xx and snd-pcm-oss to /rc.conf, I added the following to /etc/modules.conf
    # ALSA portion
            alias char-major-116 snd
            alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
            # module options should go here
            # OSS/Free portion
            alias char-major-14 soundcore
            alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
            # card #1
            alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
            alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
            alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
            alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
            alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
    When I login (as user or root) I get the dreaded no dev/dsp error.
    Now if I ls -la in /dev, I see no dsp file/directory, however, if i touch /dev/dsp I get an access denied error (as root).
    If I lsmod I get the following listed, so the modules appear to load ok.

    snd_mixer_oss 17056 1 snd_pcm_oss
    snd_via82xx 22688 0
    snd_pcm 91168 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx
    snd_timer 22532 1 snd_pcm
    snd_ac97_codec 52900 1 snd_via82xx
    snd_page_alloc 9220 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm
    snd_mpu401_uart 6432 1 snd_via82xx
    snd_rawmidi 20768 1 snd_mpu401_uart
    snd_seq_device 6504 1 snd_rawmidi
    snd 46596 9 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device
    soundcore 7456 1 snd

    Still having no luck here. I added snd-mixer-oss snd-seq-oss  to the /etc/rc.conf.  Farphel, you mentioned setting up the /etc/devfsd.conf to link /dev/dsp to the appropriate devfs entry, could you please give me an example of which lines do this.
    I also inserted the following into /etc/modprobe.conf
    (i take it modules.conf is now ignored with Kernel 2.6?).
    alias char-major-116* snd
    options snd cards_limit=1
    alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
    alias char-major-14* soundcore
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
    alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
    alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
    alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
    alias /dev/sound/dsp snd-pcm-oss
    alias /dev/sound/sequencer snd-seq-oss
    alias /dev/sound/mixer snd-mixer-oss
    install snd-via82xx /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-via82xx && { /usr/sbin/alsactl restore; }

  • Can't get sound from Insignia BT headphones w/ BT-equipped dv3t

    Both are brand-new, I charged the headphones and downloaded the updated drivers from www.broadcom.com (actually Vista seemed to do it automatically) and the device is paired but I can't get any sound out of it (it's turned on:-)).
    Under the Playback tab in the Sound control panel there are three items:
    Speakers: Bluetooth Hands-free Audio
    Speakers and Headphones: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
    Independent Headphones: IDT High Definition Audio CODEC
    All say they are working, but when I test the sound of each one I only get sound from the notebook speakers using the second option. The only weird thing I can think of is that I had the USB adapter plugged in when I downloaded the drivers, so maybe it downloaded drivers designed to work through USB? (I can't get sound with the adapter plugged in, though, either).
    Any suggestions welcome, I really want to get this to work and not have to send the headphones back to seller (which is what Insignia tech support told me to do).
    P.S. I know I have BT turned on because I'm also connected to a wireless home network, they go together.

    Hello again,
    oops, I must have missed your last message... sorry for that!
    I have to say, that I don t have my digital sound system that long, that I can answer this question for sure. However...
    You re right, that it should be possible, although I wasn t able to find a way to do that... yet... Somewhere (don t know if it was this forum or another place) I ve read, that the SPDIF support for Windows Vista isn t that nice at this time... perhaps a new driver will solve this
    Furthermore... I don t use the Media Center that much. So I don t even know if there is any option to set the output device (within the application Media Center). That would be important to realize "the best of both worlds". Explanation: If you want headphones support, you (always) have to leave the Speakers device as default. Other applications (such as Winamp,...) allow us to set the output device (in Winamp for example you can set it under the preferences Output -> Directsound device) to the SPDIF device, although we have selected "Speakers" as default in the control panel... nice, isn t it's For sure... if it would work...
    That way you don t get a(n) AC3/DTS signal via SPDIF... so, if you use Windows Vista (I can't answer your question related to other operating systems, because of my newly purchased system -> I haven t used it on XP) the only way that I know ( til now) is to select the SPDIF device as default...
