[solved]can't start gnome as user

I can't start gnome as user  only as root.
error message: failed to create file /tmp/gconf-test-locking-file-kx6h6t:Permission denied (error=13)
I think this is an pacman error (permissions)
I made an clean install  because   last pacman -Syu  crash my os.
And i  get the error as above so i can't get it to work.
I also tried to run enlightment but several applications don't start.
How to solve this?
Solution was i wiki :chmod 1777 /tmp

error message: failed to create file /tmp/gconf-test-locking-file-kx6h6t:Permission denied (error=13)
this is the problem, it states that it can't create a file because of a lack of permissions to do so. Its trying to create the file in /tmp, so that tells us that /tmp directory has permissions that aren't correct or gnome would work. What u need to do is
ls -ld /tmp
and post the results here so someone can tell u how to put the correct permissions up.
edit: I see u found the answer yourself.

    and when I am trying to create new xorg file I got an error message telling me that the number of screens detected is not matched , I am using a laptop .
    I checked ~/.xinitrc and /etc/rc.conf and everything is right.

    How silly of me.....first of all...I entered 'mysqld start', I should have just entered 'mysqld', second of all, I didn't change the file permission on /var/run/mysqld. I change /var/run/mysqld file permission into 'chmod 777 /var/run/mysqld -R', after that mysql works!

  • [Solved] Can't start GParted from XFCE menu

    Hi,
    I have polkit installed but I can't start GParted from the XFCE menu. Do I need to edit any configuration files to make this work? The wiki isn't very clear about what to do after installing polkit. Thanks.
    Last edited by kaixi (2012-11-02 15:09:12)

    In my Xfce4 installation, it's /usr/share/applications/GParted, which I copied over to ~/.local/share/applications/, as kaixi suggested, and it appeared there as gparted.desktop.  Right-click for Properties > Launcher > Command, and in that field (not wanting to install gksu) I put sudo gparted, which works, thanks.

  • [SOLVED] Can't start pulseaudio with other users?

    I am having trouble getting pulseaudio to start using a different user. The user "corey" can run pulse just fine. After logging out and logging in on user "tv", running pulseaudio --start returns this error message:
    E [autospawn] core-util.c: Failed to create secure directory: Operation not permitted
    W [autospawn] lock-autospawn.c: Cannot access autospawn lock.
    E [pulseaudio] main.c: Failed to acquire autospawn lock
    So it seems this user does not have permission? I can't imagine why, both corey and tv are in the audio group and both had active consolekit sessions at the time.
    I don't know if this is relative information but I'll throw it out there anyway. I have a multiseat configuration with 2 seats, 1 at my desktop the other for my tv however for right now I am just logging into the display at my desktop. I followed most of the relative information about pulseaudio and multiseat from this page on the gentoo wiki (including editing the config files Xstartup and Xreset): here
    consolekit though seems to be acting wierd, right now ck-list-sessions produces this:
    Session3:
    unix-user = '1000'
    realname = 'Corey Teetor'
    seat = 'Seat1'
    session-type = ''
    active = FALSE
    x11-display = ':0'
    x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
    display-device = ''
    remote-host-name = ''
    is-local = TRUE
    on-since = '2012-02-17T06:19:44.835923Z'
    login-session-id = '4294967295'
    Session1:
    unix-user = '1001'
    realname = 'The Television'
    seat = 'Seat1'
    session-type = ''
    active = TRUE
    x11-display = ''
    x11-display-device = ''
    display-device = '/dev/tty1'
    remote-host-name = ''
    is-local = TRUE
    on-since = '2012-02-17T06:13:33.618814Z'
    login-session-id = '1'
    it says that the session for corey is not active even though i am logged in right now and pulse is running. I am a bit confused...please share your wisdom with me!

    Ok, there's your problem. When you're running "$ conky -c ~/AccuW_2/accuw.Toronto.conky", you're effectively running:
    $ <insert 'conky' alias here> -c ~/AccuW_2/accuw.Toronto.conky
    Or in other words:
    $ killall conky && conky -c ~/AccuW_2/accuw.Toronto.conky & -c ~/AccuW_2/accuw.Toronto.conky
    Heh. Told you this belongs in the newbie section.
    There's an "-c ~/AccuW_2/accuw.Toronto.conky" appendage at the end that Bash doesn't know how to interpret.
    I guess I never noticed the problem because conky always autostarted. I deleted the line and restarted and everything works now. Thanks!
    Mods. move this to newbie or better yet delete it, it's embarassing.

  • [SOLVED] Can't start compiz with gnome

    When I set up gnome initially, I used the following wiki guide:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … k_Users.29
    I had some issues after upgrading to gnome 3.8 that have now since been solved.  I wen't through quite a bit trying to fix it and now somehow compiz isn't starting with my gnome/compiz session.  It starts just fine if I run
    $ compiz ccp --replace
    after logging into the session.  I think I'm simply not understanding how this session that I've installed works (or .session files in general).
    here is my /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gnome-compiz.session:
    [GNOME Session]
    Name=GNOME Compiz
    RequiredComponents=compiz;cairo-dock;gnome-settings-daemon;
    RequiredProviders=notifications;
    DefaultProvider-windowmanager=compiz
    DefaultProvider-notifications=notification-daemon
    I tried removing cairo-dock from the above file just to make sure that this is the file actually being used and it did start up without the dock as I guessed.  Obviously this file is being used.  Why won't compiz start as well?  I also tried adding gnome-panel to the file and gnome-panel did not start.  Is this because it needs a .desktop file as well?  I assume so.
    Here is my /usr/share/xsessions/gnome-compiz.desktop:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Name=GNOME/Compiz
    Comment=This session logs you into the GNOME desktop environment with Compiz and Cairo-Dock
    Exec=/usr/bin/gnome-session --session=gnome-compiz
    Icon=compiz
    Type=XSession
    and here is my /usr/share/applications/compiz.desktop:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Application
    Encoding=UTF-8
    Name=Compiz
    Exec=bash -c 'compiz --replace --sm-client-id $DESKTOP_AUTOSTART_ID --keep-desktop-hints ccp decoration'
    NoDisplay=true
    # name of loadable control center module
    X-GNOME-WMSettingsModule=compiz
    # autostart phase
    X-GNOME-Autostart-Phase=WindowManager
    X-GNOME-Provides=windowmanager
    # name we put on the WM spec check window
    X-GNOME-WMName=compiz
    # back compat only
    X-GnomeWMSettingsLibrary=compiz

    So I started to think that maybe compiz was actually starting up but the ccp argument wasn't taking.  I ran
    $ pgrep -l compiz
    and got no output.  So compiz really isn't starting at all.  What gives?

  • Can't start gnome [SOLVED]

    I now can't open these programmes, and probably more. I had updated pacman, and looked at packages I needed to update. I then force-upgraded firefox, but that was after shaman wouldn't open.
    I reboot, and gnome won't start. It gives an error like the ones below.
    [duncan@duncan-arch ~]$ gedit

    Wow. libgnutls.so.13? The current version in the 64 bit repos is so.26. That's quite a so bump. I'm assuming that you did a full upgrade? If so, you may want to force update the pacman database with pacman -Syy and then do a full upgrade again.

  • Can't start gnome 3 session

    When I login either from gdm or lxdm the screen sits blue for 1~2min then a message pops up like "Oh no! Something has gone wrong... Please logout and try again" and I can only logout and nothing else.
    A couple of days ago I installed arch and started to learn how to use pacman and I managed to install gnome 3 with no trouble, everything running smooth. Then I met the AUR, and the bleeding edge stuff, then I installed packer and this brilliant idea came up: why gnome 3, I want unity! And I started installing things mentioned in the Ayatana wiki page, I always rebooted after installing a few packages to check if everything was going well, but after I install compiz-core-unity-git something went wrong, the problem is that I'm not really sure if it was that package, but things collapsed when I ran a compiz command which I can't remember. I tried uninstalling all the packages I could think of being related to the problem, didn't work. I even uninstalled the whole gnome, gdm and xorg, and installing everything again, didn't work either. Here is what everything.log is saying about the error:

    I have hope that somebody has had this issue and that it has a trivial solution which just happend to skip my thoughts.
    Seriously I'm considering reinstalling arch from scratch.

    Sounds very familiar... I got all excited about aur and all the bleeding edge software out there for arch when I first switched and ended up messing my system up in much the same way.
    Anyways, for starters you can post the output of
    pacman -Qm
    here to see if anyone spots something bogus that you've installed from aur.
    I'm sure there are those that would disagree with me, but if I were you I would just save the output of
    pacman -Q
    and reinstall your system from scratch... Also, I don't know if you're using yaourt, but I would advise against it in the beginning since it makes it so easy to install unsupported software... I think it's better to download the package and makepkg it by hand because it makes you think more about what you're doing (at most use something like cower). That's just my opinion though...

    I've read the wiki page and I've been changing my config files accordingly. When I try to start it I get the following error (from journalctl):

    I found out what was wrong though. I had suspended the computer, which caused GNOME or whatever to mess with my session data. A reboot fixed the problem, although I'm sure a relog would've done the same.

    the lua warning you had was about grilo-pllugins, which optionally depends on lua for some plugins, and it probably wasn't anything critical.
    I don't think the tracker message is any kind of critical error either. Looks like it just reports that it was able to connect with tracker service, and everything should be ok.
    It's hard to guess why it can't find your mp3 files though, as there's no error messages or anything, but I have few ideas:
    - it could be that your missing whatever library gnome-music uses for decoding mp3 files. I looked at the dependecy tree but couldn't figure out what that library could be, but since pretty much all gnome media applications are using gstreamer for that purpose, you could be just missing some gst-plugins. Also you could try if gnome-music can load any .wav .ogg or .flac files for example from your music dir.
    - I'm not sure you're allowed to set XDG_MUSIC_DIR outside of your /home. Try creating music directory in your home, copy a few files in it, and change the directory in user-dirs.dirs accordingly.
    I think gnome-music 3.12 isn't considered 100% production ready yet, as it is still in early development stages and there could still be some issues and missing features. For now rhythmbox is still the 'default' audio player for gnome.
    about the bug reporting. If the bug is something arch linux specific, like missing dependencies, you should report it to arch bug tracker.
    if it's a bug in the application itself, like the issue in your first post, it would make more sense to report it directly to gnome bugzilla. Although in that case it might be good idea to test the latest development snapshot (i.e. gnome-music-git from AUR) to check that the bug hasn't been fixed already.

  • How can i start a new user profile service in ordre to replace an old one ?

    hi
    i create a new user profile service in ordre to replace an old one
    when i use : Get-SPServiceApplication i can see that hi is created but
    when i use Get-SPServiceInstance i can see it i can see only the old one

    Hi,
    The Get-SPServiceInstance returns the services instance for a specific server or the entire farm. The service instance GUID is unique to every farm and cannot be changed.
    For starting a fresh with the User Profile Service configuration, you can unprovision and re-provision the User Profile Service:

    I assume you're running nm-applet --sm-disable once you get a window manager session up?
    Try starting networkmanager after hal. From the wiki:
    You must also "disable" the default network daemon, and add the hal, dhcdbd and networkmanager daemons in this order:
    DAEMONS=( ... !network hal dhcdbd networkmanager ... )
