[Solved] Cannot delete folder in Gnome

I get an error when trying to delete some folders that are in the trash.  The error states it is a permission problem.  Do I need to add my user to another group?
I took a look at the groups wiki and didn't find anything relating to deleting files, I guess I have to delete them as root right?
What I was wondering was, where are the folders on my filesystem so I can rm them as root.  In Gnome I right click on the file and it says the location is trash:///
I tried searching for them but no success.

They _should_ be under your XDG_DATA_DIR I think. But I don't know if Gnome does that.

  • Cannot delete folder from Finder

I installed Logic Pro X, but then later uninstalled the program. It left a folder called "Audio Music Apps" in the Music folder, which I cannot delete. Anytime I try to delete it, it asks for my password, makes the trash bin sound, but doesn't go anywhere. I can't move the folder anywhere else either.
I reinstalled Logic and did a clean uninstall of every file from the software, but the folder is still there and cannot be deleted.
    Any suggestions?

  • [SOLVED]cannot share folder in home directory with SAMBA

My problem is relatively small as I can use a workaround but I would like to be able to discern whether or not my troubles  stem from a bug or my own incompetence.
Basically it seems I can share just about anything I want EXCEPT for a file or folder in my home directory.  I  have two primary users on my box, root & dunce, and what I am unable to do is share "/home/dunce/shared".  I've tried quite a few different configs based on what I could find online but nothing works.  Initially I followed the SAMBA instrucions on the Arch Wiki and that was fine for other items I wanted to share.  I feel like I'm kinda'   makin' a mountain out of a molehill here but I would really like to understand WHY I can't share from "/home/dunce/shared".  I really don't think it's a problem in smb.conf but then again . . .  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

The option browseable if not defined is per default set to yes.
Excerpt from The definitive guide to samba 3
browseable: This parameter determines whether a share appears in browse lists on clients. The default value of YES causes a share to appear and is usually appropriate. You can hide a share by setting this parameter to NO; however, be aware that this setting doesn't make a share unavailable, only hidden from casual browsing.
Another thing I stumbled upon is that samba can get confused if security=share is used. It will try different usernames until it finds one that can be used, or will deny access if none can be used. The following list is the order it tries to access the share:
Guest, Client provided username, Prior login, Share name, Client name, User list (if defined).
    You can try to set
    guest ok = yes
and see if that changes the behaviour. You will need
    guest account = nobody
or something similar in you global configuration to make this work.
Whatever user you set as guest need to exist in the samba database. And must be a existing linux username as well.
Another option is to set the guest account in the share definition and only allow guest access.
    [share]
    path = /home/dunce/sharefolder
    browseable = yes
    writable = yes
    guest account = dunce
    guest ok = yes
    guest only = yes
Again the username (dunce) need to exist in the samba database. Depending on your setup this can be set with the command pdbedit.
There is a samba book available online from O'Reilly. It is a bit dated, but the info on shares should still be valid. I think chapter 6 is especially interesting for you in your scenario.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot delete LibreOffice completely!

I post the same problem in the german forum a few hours ago, but there seems no easy and quick solution.
Since last week a button appeared at the right top corner in Libre Office. It wants to update my LO from Version 4.4.2.to Version 4.4.3.
So i wonder a little bit, because I am sure,  i have installed libre-office-fresh with version 4.4.3. (I have set up my system 4 weeks ago so i am really sure)
So i have deleted it with pacman, but it is still there available in the Whisker Menu (XFCE is my DE)
. I have repeated everything with the same result... I dont understand that... I can neither delete or update it...

I wonder what your computing environment is. Is your account being administrated by another account? Are you working in an account subject to "Parental Controls"?

  • Cannot delete .PDF files from a shared folder.

    Hello,
I am having issues with deleting/renaming PDF files!
Permissions is not an issue as even logged in as the Network Administrator of the Domain, I still can't delete the file.
The error message I'm recieving is:  cannot delete xxxx.pdf It is being used by another person or program.  Close any programs that might be using this file and try again.
There are only 1 or 2 users that would have access to the files and neither of them are using them.  I can also reset the security permissions for the file and take ownership, but even after doing these things it doesn't make a difference?
I've tried various unlocking tools (Unlocker) and none of them report that the file is open or that there are any locks on them.  This only happens with PDF files. If I reboot the sever the problem will go away, but this server needs to be 99.999% of the
    time!
    Help please!

    Hi,
Windows is somehow accessing Thumbs.db during the time of the folder move/delete attempt.  Please go into Folder options > View > Always show icons, never thumbnails to check if you can delete .PDF files.
For more detailed information, please refer to the thread below:

  • Cannot delete photos from panorama folder

Even though I have a 5c, I never tried the panorama feature until after upgrading to iOS 8. After taking the panorama, I wasn't pleased with it, and deleted it. The photo was moved to the new "Recently Deleted" folder, but also to the "Panoramas" folder. I know I can't delete the folder, but now I can't delete the panorama from the folder. In fact, since the original photo was "not editable," I created a duplicate in the folder, which I also can't delete. (Both have since been deleted permanently from the "Recently Deleted" folder.) No matter what method I try, I can't delete these photos, and only these two photos.
Please tell me they're not stuck there forever.

Not only was this design change an extremely bad idea, after updating my phone, it moved all the pics from my camera roll into a photos album that cannot be edited.  I can no longer delete any of these pics from my phone or from the USB connection, except from the camera roll which was added back. Now what??
How am I supposed to get rid of all the pics I don't want? This idiotic change created a big mess for me that there appears to be no way out of...

  • [SOLVED] Different delete permissions on one folder

My friends ask me to run a server for our small neighborhood, for purposes like files share and things like that.
I learned Here that the user permission to delete any file is inherited only from the "father" folder.
As for the files share, I would like that each user will be able to upload his own files, and while any user will be able to read and download any file (read permission only),
only the owner user will have the ability to delete his own files.
At the moment there is main folder with 777 permissions for everyone, and within it each user opened his own directory.
This way when some files exist in the folder of another user you cannot delete his folder/files.
But this is bad for sorting needs, I want that any user who provide installation file will be able to put it in the "Installations" folder...
Most of the users are using ms-smb client to manage their files through my Samba server, and like that when one attempts to delete another-user's file from the main-full-permissions-for-everyone folder he even not receive that Linux warning: "remove write-protected file ‘file_name’? y"
Is there a way to do that on one directory?
I tried to learn about the ext filesystem "flags" just to find some flag to make the file delete-able only by the root, that not a solution.
Sorry for my bad English, not my native language...

    Thank you all very much,
I will read that all when I'll got the time, but for my purpose the Sticky Bit thing is very much enough.
Since I think it is very useful for multi-user use of the system, why there is not some simple Arch-Wiki about it?
Or maybe there is, but I am no good in searching?

  • Cannot delete or rename own folder called Trash

While cleaning up files in a large folder, I created a subfolder which I called Trash not realizing that this would lead to problems down the road. Now I cannot delete this Trash folder and I cannot rename this Trash folder to another deleteable name.
I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone might have. I really don't want to keep the folder around and I don't want to reformat the whole volume.
    Thanks, folks.

it shouldn't lead to any problems. where exactly is this folder located? select it and enter command+i. read off the permissions in the resulting popup. what are they?

  • HT1751 I copied my iTunes folder to an external HD and now I cannot delete it. When I try to move it to the trash it displays The item "iTunes" can't be moved to the Trash because it can't be deleted.

I copied my iTunes folder to an external HD and now I cannot delete it. When I try to move it to the trash it displays: The item “iTunes” can’t be moved to the Trash because it can’t be deleted.

Close iTunes. Click the icon to start it, then press and hold down the left shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Choose the iTunes folder on your external drive. That should bring back all your playlists, ratings, play counts etc. You may have to settle for removing and reloading the media onto the device again. That's not too bad, but what you don't want to have happen is your apps being removed and reloaded as then you can lose settings and data. If that looks likely backup and then restore the device rather than sync it.
If for some reason rebuilding the library the way you did has moved files around then the restored library may have trouble finding things. If so post back and I'll explain what to do...
