[SOLVED] Cannot format flashdisk to FAT/NTFS

Hello,
I wanted to format my flashdisk, so I run the gnome partition editor, but when I tried to format a partition to FAT or NTFS (other filesystems worked well), I got an error message: "Error creating filesystem, filesystem tools not installed" (or something like that)  and "Error creating file system: Cannot run mkfs: cannot spawn 'mkfs.vfat -I /dev/sdc': Failed to execute child process "mkfs.vfat" (No such file or directory)
I have installed ntfs-3g some time ago, could this be causing the error? How to fix this?

Or pkgtools
[karol@black ~]$ pkgfile mkfs.vfat
extra/dosfstools
pkgfile will tell you what package has the file you need.

  • Cannot format hard drive on macbook pro.

Hi, I am trying to run bootcamp and install Windows but am having no luck. When I try to partition the drive through bootcamp it tells me that it cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. The message also says to format the drive after backing it up and partition after that. I have backed up my drive and am trying to erase the disk but the erase disk option is grayed out when I click on my disk to be formatted.
Also, I tried to partition the hard drive without using bootcamp, and it will not allow me to format the partition to FAT, or anything other than OSX Extended Journaled.
What am I doing wrong? Also, if I try to verify the disk for repairing it, Disk Utility freezes and I have to force quit it. My only thought in reading this is that maybe I should partition through Disk Utility if it will work, format to OSX Extended, and then format the partition to NTFS after. Is this the best way to do this.

this happens because your drive is too fragmented and bootcamp assistant can't find a contiguous piece of free space to make the bootcamp partition.

you can't erase a drive while you are booted from it. how did you back up the drive? you need to make a bootable clone and test that it works. boot from the clone and repartition (not erase) your main hard drive using the partition disk utility. then clone the clone back. boot from the internal and try using bootacmp assistant again. keep in mind that you need to leave plenty of free space on the OS X partition after you create the bootcamp partition. at least 15% of the OS X partition should be free to avoid disk fragmentation issues.

  • Formatting a drive in NTFS with OSX

i got a mediaplayer harddrive which requires to be formated in NTFS.
How can this be done with OSX?

Will VirtualPC be able to format my disk to NTFS then?
I don't know for sure, but I can't see why not.
It is still Windows at the end of the day so should work.
Edit: It's an old article (2002) but [this link|http://www.macwrite.com/critical-mass/virtual-pc-mac-os-x] mentions:
I installed Windows NT on a fresh 2GB virtual disk, the default maximum within Virtual PC for this operating system. I even formatted the disk as NTFS, an advanced directory structure that is a vast improvement over FAT in many ways, including security and stability. Works like a jet!

  • Bootcamp problem cannot format windows partition

I have tried numerous times to run bootcamp to install Windows on new Macbook 13" Retina.  It always hangs at the stage where windows tries to format the BOOTCAMP partition.  It says it cannot format it
I contacted Apple support who said that I could use disk Utilities to format the Bootcamp partition - no I can't!  I have the partition shown in Disk Utility but there is no option to format it.  There is an option to erase it with NTFS greyed out and it says in the info that it is in Windows NT file system
Any ideas - I have been trying this for weeks now
I bought Parallels but that was useless - even after giving over most of the 8GB memory to Windows it kep freezing / going slow?
How do I persuade my Windows install disk that the drive - called Untitled - is NTFS and that it can install (Windows 7) on it
Very frustrated as all this worked first time on both my iMacs
    Help please

Personally I have had no experience with this problem but maybe these urls will have some useful info.

  • Cannot format "WD My Book" external drive

I cannot format my Western Digital My Book 750GB external drive with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I have booted the computer with the Leopard DVD and used Disk Utility. I cannot repair the drive because I get an error. I cannot delete the partition because I get an error. I cannot format the drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) because I get an error.
I can only format the drive as FAT. It's like the drive will not accept anything being done to it except formatting in FAT.
Anyone know what's going on? Thanks!

Yes same issue here I had to format in dosFAT (not happy about it but only choice it would allow). Then when I went to turn on Timemachine it said I had to reformat the disk in order to use it - I told it to go ahead and it did it (not using the disk utility though) so I checked the format with Disk Utility to see what it formatted it as and it says 'Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)'. That's good enough for me.
It may just be a case of the Disk utility having an issue with it from it's original format. I should have tried to reformat again from there to see if there was a difference but I'm happy enough it's working.

  • Formatting Hard Drive with NTFS instead of FAT32 on E1550

Is there a way to format the storage hard drive plugged into the USB port using the NTFS format.
When  using FAT32 the backup software chunks backup files into 4GB blocks.  I am told to avoid that I need format the drive with NTFS format to avoid this.
However, the Cisco Connect does not offer a choice on how to format the hard drive.
It was originally formatted with NTFS, but then I had permission problems and it would not allow me to add the "admin" administrator.
Is there a way I can format the drive using NTFS and still keep the correct permissions configured?
    Thank you,
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have seen those instructions and I am not getting the same information on the screen they say I should.
I plugged the storage drive into my computer and reformatted it to the NTFS format.  I even created a folder under the root called "Backup."
But when I plug that drive back into the E1550 and go to the "Disk" tab it shows:
    Detecting...
    Partition
    File System
    Capacity
    Free Space
    Create Share
    Total
    232.885 GB
    232.885 GB
It sees something there but it is not recognizing it and as such I do not have permissions to create shared storage.
If I select the FORMAT option at the bottom of the page, then it reformats it to FAT32 and is accessable, but it is not the correct format I need for the backup program.  I need NTFS.

    Merry Christmas

Repartition and format the drive for a Mac:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • How to format external drive as NTFS?

I have a lot of files on my mac, and my external drive is formatted in FAT32. I can't put files larger the 4 GB on there. How can I format the drive as NTFS? All help appreciated!

Also note that even if you do use a Windows computer to format the drive as NTFS and then put it back in your Mac, you can't write to it without installing third party software. As installed, OS X can only read NTFS.
As Niel noted, Mac OS Extended is the best choice, as long as there's no reason for the drive to be accessible from a Windows computer. If it must be NTFS, then you have these choices for the Mac to enable write access.
A commercial product is Paragon NTFS for Mac.
There are now two versions of the open source NTFS-3G software for OS X. NTFS-3G is the free version, which only works with the 32 bit boot kernel. This version also requires installing MacFUSE. A separate component needed for the free NTFS-3G software.
Tuxera, which provides the funding for the free NTFS-3G has their own paid version. Tuxera NTFS for Mac. This version supports both 32 and 64 bit boot kernels. But NOT the newer 64 bit only kernel of some newer Macs. Tuxera's version eliminates the need for the separate MacFUSE installation, and is faster at accessing NTFS drives.
Edit: Checking Tuxera's site, it looks like they've fixed the issue with the newer Macs which will only boot 64 bit. The note they had on their site at one time about it not working seems to be gone.

  • Cannot Format Hard Drive in Recovery Mode

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to perform a fresh OS X install on my MacBook Pro Mid-2012 13." I booted into internet recovery mode (to install Mountain Lion instead of Mavericks), but when I try and partition my hard drive, Disk Utility gives an error that reads "Partition failed with the error: File system formatter failed." Disk Utility then leaves me with a greyed-out volume labeled disk1s1. My MacBook Pro has the stock 500 GB HDD.
As an experiment, I successfully formatted the disk as NTFS with a Windows 7 boot CD, and also as FAT32 from Disk Utility, so I don't think the disk is failing. Also, verify disk runs without errors before I try and partition the disk. After partitioning, it tells me that I need to reformat.
I think the problem can be narrowed down to partitioning the drive with Disk Utility as JHFS+ (I also tried HFS+ via DiskUtil). Does anyone have any advice or suggestions?
    Thank you in advance.

You can not use the recovery drive itself to reinstall OS X, but you can reinstall OS X without de-encrypting the drive.
WARNING: following these steps will remove all data from your harddrive. This process will in all likelyness not be reversible. Use at your own risk.
    1. Prepare a recovery USB stick [1].
    2. Boot from this stick
    3. Start Disk Utility
    4. Select the hard drive
    5. Select the Partition tab
    6. Change Volume Scheme to 1 Partition
    7. Enter Macintosh HD in the name field
    8. Click Apply
Your hard drive is now empty, you can use the installer on the same USB stick to re-install a clean OS X on your machine.

  • Cannot format my iMac. Problem with partition's file

I cannot format my iMac because Disk Utility sends an error: The partition map needs to be repaired because there's a problem with the EFI system partition's file system. Any suggestions?

The problem began when the Time machine excluded my home folder of the backup.  I could not include it again in the process (not in system preferences, nor anything else), so I decided to format the HD and make a fresh install of OSX Mavericks.  I could not do this because Disk Utility cannot unmount the partition when formatting the HD, and the error arose.  I simply cannot fix this, and before giving up and take it to a Mac repair shop, I would like to try by myself.

  • Cannot format micro sd, believe me, i tried everything

the same happened to me 4 days ago with my gopro 3 black edition.
I tryed format it on the camera, on the laptop with adapter, i tryed almost everything... I still see the files and i can access them and copy to my pc as well, but i can't delete them or format the card, windows not allow.
I've tryed some recovery programs, i recover lot of old files that i had deleted already from the card and the last ones before it stops working...
So it means that can have a chance to fix this i think, because aparently it's working..
I contact sandisk and i'm waiting for the answer

i have a 64gb micro sd card class 10 sdxc. im using it on my note 2. ill give you a summary of what happens. when i take pictures and store it on my memory card its ok, but when i restart my phone all the files i have it dissapears. i tried using numerous types of file explorers but it just dissapears. now im formatting the card in my note 2, but after it formats the card, after i restart my phone, all the files that was formatted comes back as if it wasnt formatted at all. i tried doing this more than 5 times still same result. i connected my note 2 on my laptop and tried formatting it there, after it formats and shows that it is succesful and formatted my card, after i rstart my computer or phone, or simply close the dialog box, it reverts back to the original state as if it wasnt formatted at all. i tried connecting my micro sd to its sd adapter, inserted the card directly to my laptop, buy it keeps saying that it is write protected. i know how to unlock the adapter (the switch on the left side), i even tried putting the switch both in opposite sides (up and down), but it still says that it is write protected. i tried using different adapters yet it says that it is still write protected and cannot format the card. i tried putting scotch tape on the side of the adapter, still it says it is write protected and cannot format the card. i tried go into the administrative tools>disk management>micro sd and formatted thru there, yet it says cannot format disk drive. ive tried formatting thru run>cmd>diskpart>list disk>select my card>format fs etc, it says cannot format card due to an error. i would lkike tothink that the card is broken and corrupted, but the thing is, i can still access my pictures and videos inside and can copy files without a problem so i know the card still works and is not broken. the only thing is there is NO WAY in formatting the card, it either shows an error that it is write protected, even in using different adapters and toggling the lock switch, or it formats but after restart of phone/computer or reinserting to other device, it reverts back to the state where it wasnt formatted at all. please, with all the things ive done, i need your help.
    PS
i tried scanning using different antiviruses (kaspersky, avg, avast, malware removals etc) and it shows no viruses or malwares or spywares. please do help

  • Satellite 2450-201: Cannot format 4GB card in SD card slot

    Hello,
    I´m a Satellite 2450-201 owner and I have a big problem.
I just bought a 4GB SD memory card and nice, it fits on the side slot on my notebook.
It's the first time using the memory card, so a needs-to-format window appears when I try to access.
The Window has the right information : 3.78Gb, Fat32, ...
I Click "OK" and the Windows (XP SP2) informs : cannot complete format (here is portuguese, so it's translated to english)
If the right size is informed , 3.78Gb, why the Windows cannot format ?
My notebook is spyware and virus free (just 23 tasks running and under control), I Have SP2, Bios 1.50 (newer), My SD controller drivers is up-to-date (the last and the only one was released in 2003).
Also tried third party "Panasonic SDFormatter 2.0". It's reporting the unit (hardware) or the mem stick SD is not compatible with the program. And the same effect happens : the Sd unit lost the nice icon and I need to remove/insert the SD to see the same story again.
    Help me please, friends.

    Hi
Its very strange that youre possible to see the SD card after plug-in. some people has suggested that this SD card slot supports only 256MB, 512MB cards and additionally with no MMC support.
I dont know if you have Toshiba SD card format utility installed on the laptop but on many Tosh notebooks such utility is preinstalled and could be used for the card formatting.
According to some posting in this forum the format utility of Portg M400 could handle the 2GB SD cards but not sure about 4GB.
If possible you could try to install this utility on your notebook but you know you have not big chances that this will work.
I think in such case only a external SD card reader will help you.

  • Can i format the drive to ntfs - cant save large files

i bought the TimeCapsole Extreeme AC but i cant save large files - can i format the drives to NTFS??
is there any other soultion to this?
    Tx

The thing is that in windows its a map drive that i can see the files but cant save large files(more then 4GB)
Ok.. I am rather shocked but of course the problem is entirely windows.. The drive is formatted HFS+ and a 3TB drive has no file size limitation other than the drive size.
Windows for some stupid reason when it maps drives has decided it must be FAT32 and applied that.
Get rid of the drive mapping.. !!
Try accessing it via network.. ie
\\TCIPaddress and see if you can get around the 4GB file size barrier. If not I will take another look at the problem.. although I have to say windows is windows..
It should see the TC as a NT Server and have no file size limitation at all.
