[Solved] Cannot poweroff/reboot in urxvt

Hi all,
I'm running StumpWM with no desktop environment, and in the past was able to shut down the machine from within an xterm as a regular user using 'systemctl poweroff' (or systemctl reboot to reboot, etc). I recently started using urxvt in daemon mode as my console program because it seemed like a clean solution to having multiple consoles open. From within urxvt, when I try to run systemctl poweroff, I get the following error:
$ systemctl poweroff
Failed to execute operation: Interactive authentication required.
Failed to start poweroff.target: Interactive authentication required.
I can start an xterm and shutdown from there, or use Ctrl-Alt-F2 and log in to a non-X tty and shut down there, all as a regular user.
I've seen other posts where the information in loginctl session-status c1 was requested, so here it is:
$ loginctl session-status c1

It doesn't look like I'm showing up as a remote user. And the output is the same when run from an xterm. Any idea what I'm doing wrong in urxvt?
Thanks!

The wiki page doesn't mention starting the daemon using .xinitrc at all. The section about using the daemon mode only describes two ways to start it through systemd (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/rx … gh_systemd).
At the very least, it looks like I should add a section on using the daemon/client setup in a single user system (through .xinitrc).
Is there a reason someone would _not_ want to run it this way? Does it cause problems for multi-user systems?
EDIT: I updated the page to include .xinitrc instructions and to add a note to the systemd section mentioning the problem with power on/power off. If anyone has more information about why the systemd configuration is desirable I would be happy to add that information as well.

  • [SOLVED] Kernel panic on poweroff/reboot only in X

    Hi guys,
    Another day, another noob. I've been enjoying my arch experience so far and looking forward to continuing the journey! I've hit a small roadblock along the way however, I seem to get a kernel panic (system hang/caps lock blinking) upon trying to poweroff/reboot in the terminal. This seems to be since I updated linux from 3.19.2-1 > 3.19.3-1. Interestingly enough the hangs only occur when trying to poweroff/shutdown from X. I have no issue with either command at the initial tty console.
    *Possibly related - during the upgrade I got 2 warnings - Possibly missing firmware for module: aic94xx and Possibly missing firmware for module: wd719xx
    I went hunting for log files but wasn't 100% sure what I was looking for tbh.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Exactly: quoting the person who closed the original bug report
    This is fixed upstream, and the relevant commit is cc: stable, i.e. should find its way to some v3.19.y. Closing, thanks for the report.
    -- edit: the patch has been added in the package linux 3.19.3-3, the speed of Archlinux developers is awesome (and this should go also in the 'ooh, nice!' thread).
    Issue still occurring. No change with 3-3. It's a strange one.

  • [SOLVED] What is preventing Poweroff/Reboot?

    My Arch box is running beautifully--but for a problem with poweroff/reboot.   I have to manually hold the power button for a few seconds before it will actually shutdown (see image)
    It's been doing that since I did a clean install 18 months ago...

    Jesus.  What are the odds?
    It's working now.
    I *DID* run an -Syu this morning, so maybe something (systemd??) updated that addressed the issue.  I also removed an lirc-i2c-module package...

    Maybe just *posting* something in the forum was enough to scare it into working again!  ;-)

  • [SOLVED] Cannot print anymore after last reboot

    HP Officejet 8100 Pro network printer doesn't print anymore but gives obscure error messages:
    /var/log/cups/error_log says "broken pipe", printing dialogue says "can't detect file type", the print dialogue says to the right of the printer "Can't copy stdin to temporary file", and the Document Print Status window gives a message box "There was a problem processing document...". The "diagnose" function offered by the message box leads nowhere (test page cannot be printed either).
    Tried to print from web browser, open office and evince.
    Any ideas? Did something fundamentally change in the recent Archlinux updates?
    Edit: Root partition was full, clearing the package cache to make some room fixed it. ("pacman -Sc")

    I did try to set up auto-mounting but that was after some previous tinkering.. I may give it another shot and I'll report back here if it is still failing.

  • [Solved] No graphical poweroff, reboot with a fresh Arch/E17

    Hi,
    I finalised an arch/E17 install & all is in the topic title...
    Commands works in terminal but not in graphical way (they are greyed in graphical syscon module from ctrl+alt+del, suspend/hibernate too)?
    I turn around that with keybinds, but it's a bit annoying...
    Any idea ?

    Hi,
    Thanks for reply, I have a "cousin" E17 distrib. on the same DD working fine & the two sysactions.conf are identicals...
    But I think about a forgotten permission group issue for my user after install ?

    The first code block contains my Xorg.0.log however I just tryed modprove nvidia and recieved FATAL: Module nvidia not found. which I discovered was solved by someone here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=961852 however when I tryed to do a pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils I get a unresolved confilict with nvidia-304xx-utils which after trying to remove with pacman -Rs shows dependencies with cario, Im not sure how far back I should start removing things to solve this conflict or how to go abouts solving it
    +++++++++
    Update: Solved
    +++++++++
    I did some more looking and found I could force the uninstall of nvidia-304xx-lts with pacman -Rdds nvidia-304xx-lts and after revisiting the Nvidia page on the wiki for the dozenth time I started thinking maybe I needed nvidia-304xx oposed to the lts release as google as kindly pointed out lts is long term support and maybe my kernel was not lts and thus conflicting.  This turned out to be the case, after removing the ofending lts version of the driver, replacing with the correct nvidia-304xx , another nvidia-xconfig and reboot followed by modprobe nvida and startxfce4 my wounderfull xfce is now running as I type this messsage in firefox.  Thank you for you help, as you asking about the modprobe output caused the chain of events leading to the success.

  • [SOLVED] cannot run Conky on KDE4

    I cannot start Conky on KDE4.
    Arch Linux Conky Manual says FEH must be installed and ~/.kde/share/autostart/fehconky must be created as follows:
    #!/bin/bash
    feh --bg-scale `dcop kdesktop KBackgroundIface currentWallpaper 1`
    I have installed FEH. Then I have created the links into .kde4 directory, because KDE4 supports this one. However Arch Linux installation with KDE4 does not include dcop but dbus. And there is no web link / information I could find, which states that how dbus must be started accordingly.
    I have also created a symlink (as stated in the page above):
    ln -s /usr/bin/conky ~/.kde4/share/autostart/conkylink
    , however when I reboot or relogin, KDE does not seem to start these programs. As a root I have not found any log file in /var/log containing why these programs cannot be started.
    For experiment, I have copied both files into ~/.kde4/Autostart, but in this case KDE4 cannot find dcop and Desktop Environment aborts to login prompt again.
    How can I start feh? Do I need it in KDE4? DBUS daemons seem to be running
    [arutku@hostarchlinux ~]$ ps -ef | grep dbus
    dbus 2999 1 0 Sep05 ? 00:00:01 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system
    root 3715 1 0 Sep05 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session
    root 3716 1 0 Sep05 ? 00:00:00 dbus-launch --autolaunch 559d1c801aa546c24bf5f91048c00573 --binary-syntax --close-stderr
    arutku 3764 1 0 Sep05 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session
    arutku 3765 1 0 Sep05 ? 00:00:00 dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session
    arutku 4104 3870 0 00:29 pts/1 00:00:00 grep dbus
    [arutku@hostarchlinux ~]$
    Do I really need to start FEH then?
    Any help appreciated because there is no information in web I could find.
    dbus is not in DAEMONS list in /etc/rc.conf. And, maybe it helps:
    [arutku@hostarchlinux ~]$ uname -a
    Linux hostarchlinux 2.6.26-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Aug 26 21:15:43 UTC 2008 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
    EDIT: Fixed typos

    I have solved the problem by running
    update-desktop-database
    both for the user and the root. I don't know for which user solved this utility the problem but it solved. I think it corrected MIME settings of the operating system. Before I had run this utility, icons for the files could not be shown, files could not be associated and KDE complained inode/* MIME types in /usr/share/packages/kde.xml.
    However this utility solved the problems. Without any FEH installation/scripting stated in Conky Wiki of Arch Linux, Conky runs automatically now.
    ~/.kde4/Autostart for KDE4 is the correct directory now to autostart Conky or any other application.
    HTH.

    I'm using a 2006 32 bit MacBook, with KDE Plasma 5.2 as my GUI. The problem began about 2 weeks ago, but I'm unable to pinpoint the software update that started this.
    Suspending has also become a problem because when my laptop wakes up from sleep mode, nothing happens (the system is inaccessible over the network, display never comes on, no log entries are added to the journal). The usual solution, hold down the power button. I can say that this isn't a hardware problem because suspend/wakeup works perfectly on OSX and Windows.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Either keep trying the new kernel versions as they filter down or switch to the 3.14 LTS kernel (if that works).
    I'll do that, thanks for the help.

  • [Solved] Cannot "su" properly in a terminal due to a .bashrc error

    The problem is simple:  I cannot su to my root account properly.  I can do so successfully in that I can become "root" but I get no output on the screen after typing in a command.  E.g., this is what my terminal shows after su'ing to root and typing the "ls" command:
    : ~ : su
    Password:
    :root:~: ls -a
    :root:~:
    Even trying to bring up a nano window gives the same result:
    :root:~: nano .bashrc
    :root:~:
    I get this behaviour in RoxTerm but in Xfce-Terminal I get this error instead:
    : ~ : su
    Password:
    -bash: printf: write error: Broken pipe
    Broken pipe (core dumped)

    I have received the same error in the past in RoxTerm but it seems to have gone away today.  I did Google that error but I found nothing that seemed to point to a solution for this issue.  And, after a lot of experimentation and troubleshooting, I've narrowed down my issue to an error in my .bashrc file.  However, despite combing through it several times, and finding other errors, I still can't locate what is causing this issue.
    My .bashrc:

    Thank you very much for the response Jason and I am sorry for the late reply but as usual life got in the way.
    I ended up doing some more experimentation and I did fix the bug you pointed out.  When this didn't solve the problem I started to look at other files.  It turned out that my .bash_aliases file was the real culprit.  The offending line was:
    alias su='su -l | cd ~/' # invokes a login shell then changes to root's home directory
    I fixed the issue by changing that line to read:
    alias su='su -l ' # invokes a login shell then changes to root's home directory
    As always thank you for the help,

  • [SOLVED] "cannot open shared object file" but library is installed

    I'm trying to run a digital logic simulation tool called "atanua" but I'm getting a missing library error:
    $ atanua
    /opt/atanua101120/atanua: error while loading shared libraries: libSDL_image-1.2.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    I tried re-installing both atanua (from AUR) and sdl_image (from repos) but the error remains.
    $ ldd /opt/atanua101120/atanua | grep sdl_image
    libSDL_image-1.2.so.0 => not found
    I can find the "missing" library though:
    $ locate libsdl_image
    /usr/lib/libSDL_image-1.2.so.0
    /usr/lib/libSDL_image-1.2.so.0.8.2
    /usr/lib/libSDL_image.a
    /usr/lib/libSDL_image.so
    And so can the loader:
    $ ldconfig -v | grep sdl_image
    libSDL_image-1.2.so.0 -> libSDL_image.so
    My initial thought is that the problem is a name mismatch between the program and the system, but I don't know the proper way to fix this.  Does anyone know what I should try next?
    Here's my system specs:
    $ uname -a
    Linux 3.0-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Oct 19 10:27:51 CEST 2011 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
    Thanks for your help.

    You're right. Some how [multilib] got disabled in my pacman.conf so I didn't spot a 32-bit version of the library.  I uncommented the [multilib] lines, searched again, and found it.  Problem solved.  Thank you.

  • [SOLVED]Cannot copy/cut/paste files in Konqueror

    Hi all, I am using KDE4.1.2 (official version). My konqueror cannot copy/cut/paste files in 'file manager' mode, the copy/cut/paste items in the right click menu are always faded out, and C-x/C-c/C-v hotkeys do not work either. However, it can read/write/rename/delete files normally. In fact, 'Move to' and 'Copy to' menu works too. Meanwhile, dolphin does not have this problem. I am a little confused.:mad:
    Last edited by hk2717 (2008-10-08 01:35:56)

    Hello,
    I'm using kdemod, konqueror 4.1.4 in i686, and the paste is always greyed out (same happens with the button in the taskbar). The "copy" action seems to be enabled through ctrl-c and the right-click, but there is no way to say, because no paste can be done. Deleting files works, so it does not seem to be related to permissions.
    Regarding the post
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57749
    I installed konq-plugins, but it did not help. The paste is also greyed out in dolphin.
    I wonder if anyone is having this same issue? I thought this was solved in 4.1.3
    Thanks!
    Eduardo

    you have that problem because you updated the kernel to 2.6.34 and you didn't rebooted. because we replace the old kernel, the modules are gone.
    the only solution is to reboot
    Thanks @wonder. After the reboot, everything is fine.. But, I think, pacman should better give a message after the kernel upgrade to reboot..
