[SOLVED]Cannot run iptables probably after doing pacman -Syu

Hi guyz, help me solving this issue.
[shadyabhi@ArchLinux ~/redsocks]$ sudo iptables -L
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.33-ARCH/modules.dep: No such file or directory
iptables v1.4.8: can't initialize iptables table `filter': iptables who? (do you need to insmod?)
Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.
[shadyabhi@ArchLinux ~/redsocks]$

you have that problem because you updated the kernel to 2.6.34 and you didn't rebooted. because we replace the old kernel, the modules are gone.
the only solution is to reboot
Thanks @wonder. After the reboot, everything is fine.. But, I think, pacman should better give a message after the kernel upgrade to reboot..

SOLUTION: had to re-install NVIDIA driver
I think this has something to do with the fact that i had NVIDIA proprietary driver installed. I fixed it before by re-installing it however now it's giving me an error about GCC version 4.8 being used instead of 4.9 and I've tried installing 4.9 but every time I -Ss I only see 4.8...

Well then it seems there is a gcc version mismatch.
According to this, we are still on gcc 4.8 unless you are using testing. And if you are, you probably selectively installed the kernel from the testing repo without doing -Syu ??
Also you say you tried installing gcc 4.9. How did you install it? was the installation successful or did it fail ?
You can check your gcc version by
    pacman -Q gcc
Yea, I was on 4.8 before not sure why it's throwing this error now...and I didn't say I installed 4.9 I said I was trying to search for it but couldn't find it and I'm not on testing so that would stand to reason. I am on gcc 4.8

  • [SOLVED] cannot find root device after pacman -Syu

Today I had a problem after pacman -Syu. Of course, my problem stemmed from not paying attention to the following (from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57205):
    <b>Read pacman's output while upgrading.</b>
I could no longer boot. I received a message "cannot find root device" or something similar indicating a device with the appropriate UUID had not been found and I was being dropped into a recovery shell, then, when I typed exit, an emergency shell, followed shortly by a freeze.
After some investigation it appeared my initramfs was broken/non-existent/something after the install. I booted into a live CD and found that updating pacman again, and mkinitcpio -p linux both displayed the following error: "Failed to create temporary working directory in /tmp". Long story short: mktemp was segfaulting. This should be extremely easy to check if you're having a similar problem. I replaced it with the version on the live CD and ran the pacman update again. Success. If you do this, you may need to make sure your live cd architecture and installed kernel architecture are the same.
I'm not sure of the etiquette here, so I'm posting this in case someone else has the same problem I did; and benefits from a similar solution. I have checked the etiquette post and I don't think it's clear whether it's kosher to post things that don't actually require a solution. However, if I have misinterpreted the rules/etiquette and/or this type of post is considered extraneous please remove it.

You have to use lvm first.  As all those vg*, lv*, and pv* commands are actually links to the lvm command, you should have to do something like "lvm vgscan" instead of just "vgscan".
Edit: oh and at that point in the boot process, you are actually in the initramfs still (ash to be specific).
Edit2: I was having issues with a USB keyboard and a new machine (actually just a new bios), and found out that because of windows 8's requriement for a fast POST, the default is to turn off the scanning for usb devices.  Though this was for UEFI, and I am not sure if the same would apply for a bios booting machine...

  • Cannot run firefox 5 after running system restore

ran system restore after installing version 5, and now cannot run firefox or uninstall it.

Windows' System Restore usually doesn't break Firefox, but it usually doesn't fix it either.
I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong during the next few steps. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, try reinstalling Firefox 5 over the existing installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
    Does it work?

  • [SOLVED] Cannot run kdenlive as user

Does anyone else have the problem of running kdenlive as a regular user? I can run it as root, but not as a user. I have the same problem as this thread:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=110402
Any clues? (FWIW, I tried the svn version of kdenlive from AUR with the same issue.)

I found the problem. If I use the Oxygen-Transparent theme, kdenlive cannot run. If I use the regular Oxygen theme, all is well. Go figure!

  • [solved]Cannot detect SD card after update

    Hello all,
I frequently mount an SD card using:
    $ sudo mount -t vfat -o uid=me,gid=users /dev/sdd1 /media/SD
However, after my latest pacman -Syu, my SD card isn't being detected by fdisk -l.
I tried hooking up an external USB SD card reader, but the result was exactly the same.
I'm terribly sorry that I don't have any idea what broke it (udisks perhaps?)
I'm using 2.6.33-ARCH, and Openbox. The SD card is a Kingston 4 GB SD HC that has always worked in the past and can still be detected on my uIEC/SD device.
Does anybody know how I can fix this?
EDIT: Today's update seems to have fixed the problem (ntfs-3g perhaps?).

  • No network after first pacman -Syu, don't know why

    Hi All,
I've been lurking on the boards since I installed Arch on a old Pentium II machine last summer.  I was pretty impressed how well it ran on crappy old hardware, so I am trying to put it on a much nicer Athlon 1200 box I recently aquired.  But I am having problems with the internet connection after the install.
The new system doesn't have a ethernet card, so I am using a Linksys usb-to-ethernet adapter.  According to this website:
    http://www.linuxcompatible.org/cdetail10700.html
this adapter should work with Linux and uses a module called CDCEther.
After installing off the base CD I burned back in about June and fiddling with rc.conf to get it set up for dhcp, I was able to get on the internet.  So I proceeded to do a pacman -Syu and rebooted once it was finished.  After that boot I can no longer get to the internet at all.  I can't even ping my linksys router which is the gateway.  If I do ifconfig eth0 it says device not found, and if I do netstat -r it returns nothing at all.
I didn't add kernel26 to my IgnorePkg line in pacman.conf.  Is it possible that the kernel got upgraded and now it can't load the module for my adapter?  When I do a uname -a it says the kernel rev is 2.6.10, while before the pacman -Syu I think it was 2.6.3.  I notice if I do modprobe CDCEther it says there is no such thing.  I didn't try that before it broke though, I didn't have any reason to check it out since everything was working.  But I assume it would have found the module then since I could get on the network just fine. . .
What is my best option here?  Does anybody know how I can fix this situation, or should I just reinstall?  And if I do reinstall should I use the ftp install instead of going off the CD like I did this time?
    Thanks,
    Ralph

I have nailed down the problem more and found a workaround for now.  I'll add the info here in case somebody else finds this post when working on a similar problem.
I tried changing CDCEther to usbnet in both modprobe.conf and rc.conf as that link I posted above suggested.  That didn't help.  After rebooting I still had no network connection even though lsmod showed the usbnet module was running.
So I left those files with usbnet in them and downgraded the kernel to the 2.6.3 version on my base install CD from last summer.  After doing that and booting the USB to ethernet adapter is fine and I can get to the internet.  So clearly it was the pacman -Syu upgrading the kernel that broke it, I just don't know why.
For now I have put kernel26 in my IgnorePkg line of pacman.conf so this won't happen again.  I would guess if I figure out why it broke I could upgrade the kernel by recompiling or using ABS as people suggested above.  But I'll wait till I have a little more experience and know more about why the newer kernel didn't work before I try that.
Thanks again to iBertus and sarah31 for the help.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot startup properly after recent pacman -Syu

I'm having a bit of trouble starting up my system after a recent upgrade (6-6-13).  I ran into some issues beforehand with the error
    filesystem: /bin exists in filesystem
    filesystem: /sbin exists in filesystem
but resolved that by following the steps highlighted on the recent news section on the home page.  I use rEFInd and I get the normal boot menu and everything seems normal, but I get this message when loading up the OS
    [FAILED] Failed to mount /boot.
See 'systemctl status boot.mount' for details.
[DEPEND] Dependency failed for Local File Systems.
So I run the command mentioned above and get this
    boot.mount - /boot

I'm still new and getting used to this but it looks like my filesystem is not loading properly (obviously) and I do not know how to resolve my issue.  Any help?  You guys were great helping with my install issues.

I'm happy to say that I was able to successfully boot thanks to some research into the Arch boot sequence and adding MODULES="vfat" to my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf!  I ran
    mkinitcpio -p linux
to create the initramfs-linux.img and initramfs-linux-fallback.img in my /boot directory.  I tried to reboot, however it did not work because I did not have what rEFInd needed to boot successfully.  I then ran
    cp /boot/vmlinuz-linux /boot/EFI/arch/vmlinuz-arch.efi
    cp /boot/initramfs-linux.img /boot/EFI/arch/initramfs-arch.img
    cp /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img /boot/EFI/arch/initramfs-arch-fallback.img
to place the images and the kernel in my rEFInd directory so that rEFInd could find those things in order to boot successfully.  So basically I had the right files in the wrong place!
Anyways, thanks for all the help everyone!  The Arch community is great when noobs like me get stuck!
One more small question from me... I'm supposed to mark the topic as SOLVED when it is in fact solved.  How do I change the title of this topic?  Thanks

  • [SOLVED] cannot run Conky on KDE4

I cannot start Conky on KDE4.
Arch Linux Conky Manual says FEH must be installed and ~/.kde/share/autostart/fehconky must be created as follows:
    #!/bin/bash
    feh --bg-scale `dcop kdesktop KBackgroundIface currentWallpaper 1`
I have installed FEH. Then I have created the links into .kde4 directory, because KDE4 supports this one. However Arch Linux installation with KDE4 does not include dcop but dbus. And there is no web link / information I could find, which states that how dbus must be started accordingly.
I have also created a symlink (as stated in the page above):
    ln -s /usr/bin/conky ~/.kde4/share/autostart/conkylink
, however when I reboot or relogin, KDE does not seem to start these programs. As a root I have not found any log file in /var/log containing why these programs cannot be started.
For experiment, I have copied both files into ~/.kde4/Autostart, but in this case KDE4 cannot find dcop and Desktop Environment aborts to login prompt again.
How can I start feh? Do I need it in KDE4? DBUS daemons seem to be running
    [arutku@hostarchlinux ~]$ ps -ef | grep dbus
    dbus 2999 1 0 Sep05 ? 00:00:01 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system

    arutku 4104 3870 0 00:29 pts/1 00:00:00 grep dbus
    [arutku@hostarchlinux ~]$
Do I really need to start FEH then?
Any help appreciated because there is no information in web I could find.
dbus is not in DAEMONS list in /etc/rc.conf. And, maybe it helps:
    [arutku@hostarchlinux ~]$ uname -a

I have solved the problem by running
    update-desktop-database
both for the user and the root. I don't know for which user solved this utility the problem but it solved. I think it corrected MIME settings of the operating system. Before I had run this utility, icons for the files could not be shown, files could not be associated and KDE complained inode/* MIME types in /usr/share/packages/kde.xml.
However this utility solved the problems. Without any FEH installation/scripting stated in Conky Wiki of Arch Linux, Conky runs automatically now.
~/.kde4/Autostart for KDE4 is the correct directory now to autostart Conky or any other application.
    HTH.

  • [SOLVED] cannot run gnome-terminal or rxvt

I am running Arch 64 with GNOME. Every time that I try to run gnome-terminal, it simply flashes for a split second and disappears. it does not seem that rxvt is even invoked when I click on it, and I am not sure how to proceed.
Here is what I have done:
1.The problem started when I got openbox under GNOME up and running. I thought that openbox did something odd, so I removed it. (I don't think a window manager would damage applications, but I'm kinda knew to swapping them around)
    2. I went ahead and got metacity running again.
    3. I reinstalled GNOME.
    4. I double checked previous forum posts, and I indeed have a default shell (now zsh, see below)
    5. I went ahead and installed zsh. It works just fine in tty, and 'echo #SHELL' properly returns '/bin/zsh'
    Ideas?
Last edited by electricaltape (2010-05-17 23:28:38)

The only problem is with terminals; all other applications in X work fine. I don't think it is a driver problem since the terminal only began to misbehave after I installed/uninstalled openbox. I am not sure where to look for error messages; is there some logfile I can check?
I think kazuo is on to something.
    DISPLAY=:0 gnome-terminal
    has the output (in tty1)
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyFailed to parse arguments: Cannot open display:
UPDATE : The install I had was pretty fresh anyway, so I just reformatted. Therefore, no more problem.

  • Cannot run javascript - options/content does not even show javascript

try using options/content - does not even show javascript option. i uninstalled program and re-installed and get the same result. using xp.

Is this a global problem that JavaScript is not running on any site? The on/off setting is still available in the about:config preferences editor.
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''java''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) if '''javascript.enabled''' is bolded and set to false, double-click it to switch it back to true. This takes effect right away, but you'll need to reload the problem pages so Firefox re-reads the scripts.
Does that fix it or are particular sites still problematic?
One way that your normal default preferences could be changed is by an extension, and another is by external software creating a user.js file. If this problem recurs, you can investigate both of those.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot boot from raid1 after upgrade

My system cannot boot from software raid(1) after upgrading the kernel to version 3.2.13-1. I realized then, that mkinitcpio.conf was overwritten (probably missed that in a previous upgrade). So I put back "mdadm" to HOOKS and "raid1" to MODULES. Unfortunately it didn't help. This is the boot-up screen:
    Any ideas?
Last edited by dito (2012-03-28 13:10:52)

Thank you for your answer. I replaced the mdadm hook with mdadm_udev and updated my mdadm.conf. Removing the hd configuration stuff from grub then finally did the trick. Works again!

  • [SOLVED]Cannot run own program since last update : malloc.c:3096 error

    Hi all,
It seems that due to a recent update a program that I am working on doesn't run any more.
It doesn't rely on any external libraries and compiles fine, but when it gets to a : "pointer = new class_object[4096];" it crashes with the error:
    malloc.c:3096: sYSMALLOc: Assertion `(old_top == (((mbinptr) (((char *) &((av)->bins[((1) - 1) * 2])) - __builtin_offsetof (struct malloc_chunk, fd)))) && old_size == 0) || ((unsigned long) (old_size) >= (unsigned long)((((__builtin_offsetof (struct malloc_chunk, fd_nextsize))+((2 * (sizeof(size_t))) - 1)) & ~((2 * (sizeof(size_t))) - 1))) && ((old_top)->size & 0x1) && ((unsigned long)old_end & pagemask) == 0)' failed.
    Aborted
I've done some searching but have been unable to find much other than this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=654908 which leads me to believe that it might be a library version conflict. I am unsure how to debug this though. I also own an nvidia card running nvidia drivers, and the nvidia drivers were updated in the last update but I do not have the same file that the previous poster had a conflict with. I am also not sure how the nvidia drivers would cause problems as I'm not linking with OpenGL or any library other than the standard library.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks!
Last edited by neutrix (2010-02-17 15:05:01)

Well this problem works both in debug and release builds. I've got the bug down to the individual line that it crashes at, I create an instance of a class like this:
    Vec3 *vectorlist;
vectorlist = new Vec3[5012]; //CRASHES ON THIS LINE
Vec3 is a class that I've defined for 3D vectors. It doesn't do anything complicated or special, the constructor simply initializes the 3 components of the vector to 0. I am happy to post the full code (it isn't very complex) if someone else wants to try compiling it to see if it works on their computer.
I think the problem might not be in my code (considering it worked before the update), but instead might be some clash between library versions as in the thread that I linked to in my first post. I am not sure how to go about debugging a problem like this though.
