[SOLVED] Cannot start JACK as normal user

Hello,
I cannot start JACK as non-root user. As root, everything works as expected.  The user is a member of the audio group, but apparently this system is deprecated anyway.
$ jack_control start

This is shown in the "Messages" window of qjackctl:

This is the "Settings" part of ~/.config/rncbc.org/QJackCtl.conf, but I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the problem, since starting JACK with jack_control doesn't work either:

I have found similar threads, but all differ from my situation and the solutions suggested do not seem to work for me. Some people suspect PulseAudio to be the culprit, I tried to redirect ALSA to PulseAudio, and that to JACK without any effect. I don't think I use PulseAudio, but then again, I run Gnome, and gnome-settings-daemon seems to depend on it.
Any suggestions are much appreciated!
Thank you.

ids1024 wrote:I believe Gnome starts pulseaudio automatically. I think you can disable it by setting autospawn to "no" in /etc/pulse/client.conf.  The wiki mentions another way to have pulseaudio use jack.
Hey ids1024,
thank you for your answer. I am now using PulseAudio (which was indeed installed before, but somehow didn't start at boot), and it works very well, also with JACK - as long as I run jack_control as root. As a normal user, it's the same issue as before. I'm not sure if PulseAudio has anything to do with that at all.
EDIT: I installed pulseaudio-alsa. Now I can start JACK as non-root user! However, JACK - although it registers with PulseAudio, as shown by pavucontrol -  doesn't output any sound. Unless I'm root, of course.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot mount usb (as normal user)

    Hello
I'm facing this problem for the first time, but can't tell if it came after an update or an unexpected reboot (light went out).
I'm using latest kde (4.9.2?), and the latest kernel,
    Linux gantz 3.6.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Nov 5 11:57:22 CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
When I plug any usb device, kde ask me what to do. When trying to mount it, either from the kde "mount" plasmoid or from dolphin, I get a "Not authorized" error. Mounting via cli with sudo works fine.
After doing some research, I found that I need to be in the storage group in order to be able to mount, so I checked, and I was already on the storage group. Next.
More research sent me to lots of pages talking abour .xinitrc, wich doesn't exists (on my home, at least). Also tons of pages where talking about somethin like "exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch session-manager" (I login via kdm), but the ck-launch-session is not found on my computer either.
So i'm stucked right now, and don't know how to proceed, any clues? Thanks

pd @Raynman: removing myself from the storage group did not change anything.
that's not a fix, it's a crappy workaround. You are not supposed to touch these files, they will be overwritten on an upgrade. My guess is that you are simply not using systemd and therefore you are not in an active logind session. You have to boot with systemd, as mentioned in the news. Everything should then just work out of the box.

  • [Solved] Cannot start wireless network as user, only as root

    Hi All,
I have just made the move from Ubuntu Hardy as I couldn't stand all the constant freezing. I have followed the Beginners Guide to installing Arch and found it to be a very interesting learning experience. However, as the post title says, although I can get a working internet connection as rot, he moment I login as a user, I cannot get access, and get the error message "SIOCGIFFLAGS error: No such device".
I have added my user account to network and wheel etc, but to no avail. I still have to open a root terminal and manually bring the network up every time. As a side issue, I cannot sudo as my user account even though I am in the wheel group.
Can anyone help please? Let m know what you need to see from my conf files. I am running 64 bit as well.
    Many thanks,
    Igzilla

For the first question... what are you trying to use to configure the network. Typically network connection is a root only thing and you shouldnt need to do it as a user directly.
For sudo, you need to configure sudo. Run 'visudo' as root.

1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot start i3/ X Server

    Hi,
I cannot start my x server or i3 and I have no clue why. My setup is up to date. I am running arch inside vmware and probably there lies the problem.
I normally start i3 using the .xinitrc ("exec i3") if I login from tty1. Doing this now will throw me back to the login screen.
If I login from another tty and enter "i3" or "X" or "startx" the VM will hang-up. It does not start the xserver nor can I Ctr+C or switch ttys.
The particular line where it hangs is "Loading extension GLX". On the last successful login (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) directly after this line would be "LoadModule: vmware".
So my guess is that it's a vmware issue. But I do not know where to look to track down the source of this error.
I know, that I didn't give you much information. But I didn't find anything suspicious in my logfiles. So if you need something pasted here, please let me know.

i added :/usr/bin but there is no change, even if i comment that line, nothing changes
    with MANPATH /usr/profile i have
    export MANPATH="/usr/man:/usr/X11R6/man"
my manual pages are in /usr/man, but one more time even if i comment that line, nothing changes
sudo man ls -> the man page appears
man ls -> "no hay ninugna pagina sobre ls"
one thing i realized, is that before i made any changes, i try to man as normal user anything on /usr/man subfolders, and that man pages do appear, both sudo and normal user.
but ls vi sudo and other man pages only appear as root.

  • [SOLVED] Cannot start Virtual Network: "out of memory"

I am attempting to use KVM, Qemu and libvirt to run Windows VM's to test websites in IE. I have gotten everything to work fine except guest to host communication, which obviously is crucial for testing the websites.
Currently i am using macvtap to setup networking, which works beautifully for everything except host to guest networking. The easiest way seems to be to use isolated virtual networks. However, i cannot start any virtual networks. I have tried from inside virtual manager and inside virsh command prompt. I always get "out of memory". I have googled the error and nobody seems to have this problem.
One note, I do NOT have a swap drive. Is this needed for virtual networks?
    EDIT:
I have now tried exactly the same on another, identical computer but with swap drive (16gb) and it did not work there either. Both computers have 8gb ram. Seems to be loads free in tops.

  • [solved] cannot start firefox after xulrunner update on oct 4

since upgrading yesterday i cannot start firefox.
the console gives the following error message:
Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.0.1 and 1.9.0.1.
A quick google search shows a gentoo bug with the same symptoms - the solution was recompiling firefox. Is anybody else having this problem?
edit: apparently i had firefox-branded installed and therefore didn't get the upgraded pacman package - could somebody please delete this post? thanks

  • Cannot start weblogic 8.1 User is not permitted to boot the server

    Hi,
Sorry to cross-post, but I didn't seem to get any feedback on this in the 'security' newsgroup.
I have installed Weblogic 8.1SP3 on two identical workstations as well as deployed our application. On one server WL8.1 starts up fine. On another, it says "BEA-090404 user weblogic 8.1 is not permitted to boot the server".
The OS'es are identical: Windows XP Pro SP2.
The only difference I can think of: one is logged into a windows-domain, the other directly onto the PC.
I've ran diffs-ignoring-whitespace (i.e. diff -w) on the important-looking files (.ldift and config.xml) and don't see any differences that would warrant such difference.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    bill

when you installed the WLS , which admin user did you >create ?Admin user 'weblogic'. Actually someon did this long ago and checked in the generated config files (boot.properties) into our source tree?
So, in which mode do you start the WLS ? development or >production ?This I don't know.
    Our setup is as follows:
    1) We install weblogic (server only)
    2) Run our ant scripts
    3) Ant populates and deploys the config files and pe.ear file to a new domain.
    4) we start weblogic from a script in that domain: startWeblogic.cmd
    <Jul 20, 2007 8:17:35 AM CDT> <Info> <Configuration Management> <BEA-150016> <This server is being started as the administration server.>
    <Jul 20, 2007 8:17:35 AM CDT> <Info> <Management>
We use a few app servers and use a similar paradigm: install, deploy from build tree, start from script.
My question: where do you specify that 'user weblogic is member of the administrator group' ?

  • [SOLVED] Cannot start a virtual terminal in KDE

    Hi people,
I'm having an annoying issue with konsole : when started, the app starts, but it doesn't give me the prompt... All I have is a white cursor in the top left corner, and I can't type anything.
Switching to vc/1 using ctrl+alt+F1 works fine, and is fully usable.
I installed yakuake : same issue. I then installed gtkterm : same issue, but this time I get an error message :
Can not open /dev/ttyS0 : Permission not granted
Ain't ttyS0 the serial port ? Is there any chance that might be the problem ?
As suggested on the chakra forum, I checked permissions on :
    * /bin/bash : root root 755
    * /dev/tty1 : root root 777
On a maybe related note, I'm also having issues with kdesu : launching "kdesu kate" in krunner asks for root passwd, but then fails telling me "su" is not a recognized command. Similarly, I can only launch arxin, kuser, etc... as a regular user, giving the root passwd when required fails with that same error. I can use "su" when using vc/1, it works fine.
It looks like I've broken something bad, but I don't know what...Any idea, anyone ? I could go the easy way and reinstall, but I like to understand things...

    Thanks for helping !
@jelly : yes, but I had the issue before. Can it be xorg related ?
@Chrysalis : yes but it is commented. Should I uncomment it ?
