[SOLVED]Choppy to no sound

I have a strange problem with my Toshiba/intel laptop. If I play a mp3 in XMMS there is no sound. If I jump out in the song there is a 1.5 sec sound (the mp3) witch repeats 2 times rapidly. Then there is silence until I jump in the song again. What could cause this? Also I have to unmute with gnome alsa mixer after every restart.

Solved it with
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba
in /etc/modprobe.conf
Man I love making stuff work!

  • [SOLVED] ASUS F3JC - no sound in headphones

    Hi,
I successfully solved problem with no sound at all (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=31960), but still have no sound in my headphones. When I plug them in, laptop speakers get muted, but headphones play no sound. I'm using KMix to control volume.

    Hi,
what you mean by that "sense" word? Or what it means... Theres that yellow led above... It's turned on, I double checked all of that. Plugging headphones in just mutes speakers. Whats going on? I need to use skype and without headphones its bit annoying... Could it be something with snd_hda_intel module's model option?
If only certain aspects of your hardware work, e.g. the headphones but not line out, then you can try passing the model argument:
    modprobe snd_hda_intel model=asus
I've got exactly the opposite .

  • [SOLVED] Choppy sound with Intel audio card

Ever since I bought this laptop and installed Arch, I have experienced this annoying choppiness.
What happens is that when I highlight other windows, under the minimum memory/cpu load the sound is truncated. I can't listen to music pleasantly on my laptop, and I can't stand it.
My laptop is a HP 530, with an integrated Intel audio card. This is the output from hwd -s:
    Sound(a) : 82801G ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller module: snd-hda-intel
I have 1Gb of RAM, and the processor doesn't seem very busy when the sound is truncated. This happens under any DE/WM - even in tty!
For what is worth, I had problems with the speakers not muting when the headphones were plugged in, and I have followed the method indicated here.
    Thanks for your time.

Auto is the default, it might not be resolving the model correctly (that's the case with my laptop).  Try model=hp.
If that doesn't work, you could try turning off power saving:
    options snd-hda-intel power_save=0

  • [SOLVED]New Build, no sound, Alsa unable to open slave

I've been happily using Arch on an old laptop I had lying around for 4/5  months, alongside ARM on my Raspberry Pi for a year or so. Being more than happy with it I decided to sell my 2011 i5 iMac, build a pc and hopefully learn something along the way. I mention this as it's my first build and the issue may be hardware realted, or more likely my assembly of the hardware, I've updated my sig to reflect the new parts.
The first decision I made two days ago upon putting the system together. I had two plugs, one for HD audio, another for Realtek audio, I went with the HD option. The other variable that is new to me is an audio option in the Gigabyte uefi/bios for audio which has options for enabled, disabled & auto - I've tried all three. I thought at first going with HD option may have meant sound only via hdmi, I'm using an old vga monitor, but after a little reading it seems the HD option should work with the standard audio out's on the motherboard & case too.
I've got a 3.5mm jack plugged into the line out on the back of the motherboard going to a phono connection on my stereo, I've also tried the headphone out on the front of the case, Zalman Z9.
    I've installed alsa-plugins and alsa-utils. Upon running speaker-test, or speaker-test -c 2 I'm getting:
    speaker-test -c 2
    speaker-test 1.0.27.2
    Playback device is default

The above is all without any .asoundrc in my home directory or anything in /etc.modprobe.d/*.conf
From the wiki I've tried putting
    options snd slots=snd_mia,snd_hda_intel
    options snd_mia index=0
    options snd_hda_intel index=1
in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf, and tried reversing the 1 and 0, both 0's, both 1's to no avail.
I've tried a few variations in .asoundrc based on the wiki example with no luck.
I'm lost, this is the first time I've had sound issues with linux and I'm really not sure if it's rooted in the hardware, my first attempt at building a pc or a simple alsa config issue.
Googling for unable to open slave in alsa seems to bring up mainly conflicting programm issues whic I don't think is my issue as I have no sound at all.
    *edit*
perhaps this should be in newbie corner? my linux sound knowledge is definitely newbie status.

Solved, not sure where I was going wrong in my initial attempts but a simple .asoundrc has my speakers singing. Could have sworn this was tried to death in the first half hour or so, oh well.
On the plus side I spent my lunch hour today getting a rough idea of sound on linux and alsa preparing for a fight with my new build, ten minutes after booting up the new machine on my return home & all is well.

  • [SOLVED] vlc: sometimes no sound after jump

When jumping to random places during video playback in vlc (e.g., to look for a particular scene), I notice that sometimes sound playback quits. Jumping around some more often restores sound playback, but sometimes it takes several jumps to get the sound back. How many jumps it takes to reproduce the problem or make it go away seems to be random. This is happening on all video files I've tried.
I never had this problem before I upgraded my system on 3/1/15. My current vlc version is 2.2.0-1. I tried downgrading just vlc to the version I had before the upgrade (2.1.5-5) and the problem is still there. I also tried installing phonon-qt5-vlc (since during the upgrade pacman asked me whether to install phonon-qt5-gstreamer or phonon-qt5-vlc and I chose pacman's recommendation, which was phonon-qt5-gstreamer) and that did not solve the problem, either.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Can someone please help me troubleshoot further?
Last edited by bdantas (2015-03-12 21:22:50)

This is a little off-topic, but I did a little research on vlc alternatives and found that mplayer and vlc are very similar projects (both are extremely versatile, fairly self-contained, licensed under GPL). Main difference between the two seems to be that vlc is bundled with its own gui, while mplayer is just the backend--gui frontends include GNOME Mplayer, KMplayer, and SMplayer (the latter is written in qt and seems to be more DE-independent).
I'll give SMplayer a try to see if it has the same problem, then I'll report back.

Just tryed playing a wav with aplay and it didn't give me any errors, but I didn't hear anything if that helps anymore. Running a amixer set MASTER 70% unmute also gives me the unable to find simple control 'MASTER',0 error too, though I can change the volume fine with alsamixer so I'm not sure why that is. The correct module is loaded (snd-hda-intel). Otherwise I'm at a complete loss.
edit: amixer set MASTER 70% gives me the same error on an ubuntu livecd where sound does work so that seems normal. I don't know what changed, but I can now open the volume control so the gstreamer error goes away, however I still can't get any sound, be it with aplay or something else. I'm starting to think the solution may be to pass on arch and move to something better.

  • [Solved] Strange error with sound modules

If i modprobe any sound modules, i get strange errors which tell me to lookup dmesg.
    The error output looks like
WARNING: Error inserting snd_mixer_oss (/lib/modules/2.6.13-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/snd-pcm.ko): unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting snd_pcm_oss (/lib/modules/2.6.13-ARCH/kernel/sound/core/oss/snd-pcm-oss.ko): Unknown symbol in modules or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
The same for my soundcard drivers etc, simply any alsa module.
    My modprobe.conf looks as follows.
    install snd-pcm modprobe -i snd-pcm; modprobe snd-pcm-oss; true
    install snd-seq modprobe -i snd-seq; modprobe snd-seq-oss; true
    options snd device_mode=666
    alias snd-card-0 snd-ens1397
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-ens1371
Well, this should work fine (as i know). Looking up dmesg i get the following:
    snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_info_unregister
    snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_info_get_line
    snd_pcm_oss: Unknown symbol snd_pcm_format_width
I've got this problem since i updated to 2.6.13-ARCH.
Since this problem causes hotplug to take 10 minutes to start, it's annoying. I'd appreciate any hint what i could try.
    Thank you,
    STiAT

    That did solve my problem.
    Thank you alot!

Please mark this thread as solved by prepending [SOLVED] to the title in the first post.

  • MP3's not playable, songs won't play on pandora, video on youtube is choppy with no sound.

Over the past couple of months my L355 Satellite laptop has been shutting itself down, usualy after a couple of hours. A week ago it did this and it would not start back up. I bought some dust-removal canned air and cleaned it out the best I could without removing the case. This made it so that it would start back up, but now it was freezing after 5 - 60 minutes of use (at this time though, video and audio were still working.) I ran a virus check and it found four files, three of which were from an old video game I had installed and one that was java related. I deleted them. It seems to be since this time that when I attempt to plan an MP3 in windows media player it states "windows media player encountered a problem while trying to play file" and web help shows error code C00D11B1. It is not just windows media player as I have attempted to play mp3 files in winamp and itunes, both will not play. It shows the selected song and 0.00 for the time of the song... I tried to open the Pandora website and this happened on their site as well. I opened youtube and while the video would start, it was very choppy and there was no sound. I have re-installed the sound driver and I am not getting any errors in the device manager. I have tried a good amount of troubleshooting to no avail. Please help! Thank you.

anyone with any kind of suggestion... please?

  • [SOLVED] "alsaconf" broke my sound.

Hi, I've been having problems some strange background noises for a while, so I did a quick search and found this thread, which to my knowledge fixed the problem. So, I rebooted and the noises were still there, then I checked out the ALSA Arch wiki and read the configuration section. Realising what I may have just done I tested my sound only to find I had killed it.
As far as I know it has broken udev and modprobe.conf (which for some reason is empty). I tried to solve the problem myself but I'm feeling  a little lost and a little out of my depth.
    Can anyone please help?

  • [SOLVED][KDE4]Only system sounds will play

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the DE section, so please move it if you see fit.
I'm having a bit of a tricky issue with KDE, all the system sounds will play, but nothing else. I'm currently using the gstreamer phonon backend with ALSA. I've seen some forum posts from the gentoo wiki with similar problems but it seems it was just a mixed mess of deleting .folders and other configuration files. I've also tried to use the VLC phonon backend but to no avail either. I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and has a coherent solution.
So far I've tested playing audio files in VLC and videos on youtube. My alsa device is fully configured and will play audio, just not output from programs that are not part of the plasma environment. I have also looked to the wiki for a solution but it only seems like it has solutions for audio conflict problems, which is all sorted out for me.

i recently had a gstreamer issue that i solved today as well.  run a pacman -Ss gstreamer0.10 to see which packages you have installed.  you might need to install the gstreamer0.10-plugins group of packages, as i did.
this might be completely different from what i went through, since i'm not using phonon or kde, but it's worth a shot.  worst case scenario is you uninstall the extra packages afterwards.
another option to try (which didn't help me, but was a solution for SOMEONE i found through my searches) was to compile and reinstall a fresh version of the gstreamer0.10 package.  abs makes it so simple to do, it's also worth trying.

  • DVD Sound choppy with onboard sound

Okay, I have this problem with playing any dvd's through any version of power DVD.
With the onboard sound chip with the latest realtec drivers, any dvd (especially high fidelity funny enough) plays with the sound really choppy and nasty. If I switch to my second soundblaster soundcard, the sound is really perfect. So i'm just wondering what is causing the A97 chip to output choppy sound when playing dvd's, wheras normal mp3's play fine
    Thanks
    Dan

Cant think of much though have you enabled DMA on your DVD drive?
Because I had somany problems with my onboard sound card I went and got my self a creative live sound card.

  • Itunes + Gaming = choppy, scratchy, icky sound.

I consider myself a proud owner of an ipod. I chose the best I could get imo for my listening pleasure. Up untill the latest itunes version I was pretty satisfied with itunes. I could easily buy new music without having to leave the home. I even bought some music after I upgraded. Now i'm also hooked on one of the best known MMORPGs.... before I had no trouble playing music while gaming. Yet since this last version It seems impossible to do so.
I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2nx, (the usb thing with the 24bit sound). 5.1 surround. Before there was no trouble running my game and itunes together and still be able to listen to both the sounds. Now if I play my music in itunes without the game running, nothing happens. Even better: before I can even have the game running, switch to desktop open itunes play my music but !the moment! i switch to the game. The sounds gets choppy, scratchy, icky. And only the itunes part. The sounds within the game remains unaffected. I've tried all the solutions apple has handed to us users. 16-bit, 24-bit, stereo, 5.1, 44.1khz, 48khz, Lowering the sounds output of windows and raising the sounds output in itunes. ENABLING enhanced sound ( it was off to begin with on my comp), Turning on safe mode within quicktime prefs. All to no avail. Even tried looking for additional plugins which I had none...
So can somebody plz confirm that they have no troubles playing music (newly bought, and bought before) untill they switch to a game (that uses direct sound of course) and the trouble starts there?
I know apple is real handy in saying.... well u shouldn't use that game then.... NO, it worked before, I paid money for the songs I'm trying to play, I paid money for the ipod I have and that is the reason I use itunes. So plz fix it.
So another topic to add to the endless list of problems

I am having the same problem...yet the recorded music on the ipod sounds great. I just cant listen to any of the tunes while recording or just playing the cd. Its weird!
I have reset the Ipod what a job, plus gone in and made some speaker changes etc;, but nothing seems to work, and then some times it will play perfectly.
I have Windows Media, so naturally It opens when I put a cd in, so I have to turn it off on Mute and mute itunes and the it records great.
Help, I would like to listen to music while downloading and working on the computer..So does anyone out there have the same problem and a fix?
    Thank YOU

  • [SOLVED?] KDE4: Removed sound devices popup appears when sfx is played

edit: Marked as solved because this problem hasn't occurred for a while. Will be re-opened if it occurs again.
When doing something that triggers a KDE desktop sound effect, such as emptying the trash or searching for something in Kate, this popup appears:
This happens only once per boot. After closing the window it doesn't reappear until the system is rebooted. All sounds work well, without any problems. ALSA is used, no Pulseaudio or other sound servers.
Any ideas what to do? Should I click "yes" when it wants to "forget" sound devices? There are multiple reports about this problem at the KDE bug tracker but I'm not sure if this is a bug or just a configuration error.

There were some duplicate devices listed in the Phonon settings panel so I let it forget those. Now it only complains about one device.
This doesn't have duplicates and it won't go away even if I let it forget it. It appears again after reboot.
