[SOLVED] chrome / chromium high gpu usage leads to overheating laptop

My laptop overheated a few times recently due to high gpu temperature. Tried different drivers (nouveau and nvidia) and kernel and that didn't help. So, today when it started heating up I went through the options in chrome:/flags in chromium to disable all gpu accelerated options I could find (hardware acceleration was already disabled). Then I noticed in the task manager that the gpu process was still there (also it was still getting hot). So, I went through all the switches for chromium and started it like this:
chromium --diable-gpu --disable-accelerated-2d-canvas --disable-accelerated-jpeg-decoding --disable-accelerated-video-decode --disable-gpu-compositing --disable-gpu-program-cache --disable-gpu-rasterization --disable-gpu-shader-disk-cache --disable-gpu-vsync --disable-one-copy --disable-threaded-compositing --disable-threaded-animation
and now the cpu heats up a little but that is throttled through thermald so no big deal there. No gpu process anymore in the built in task manager for chromium.
Has anyone else experienced this issue or have any different ideas? Is there a way to throttle gpu based on temperature for nvidia cards? I have some new thermal paste coming and got some compressed air to clean out my machine and then reapply the paste (probably needed to be done anyways). Just curious if anyone else had any alternate thoughts or if maybe it was just a couple things I could disable in chromium instead of everything. I noticed it heats up a lot when viewing long pages with lots of images especially.
Edit: The card is a Nvidia GTX560M. I just tried nouveau and messing around with some variables for temperature threshold in /sys/ but it didn't seem to help (I don't think my gpu fan is that compatible anyways).
Update: The only option needed to get rid of GPU Process tab is  "--disable-gpu-compositing"

I do not entirely understand your post. I have looked into throttling gpu. I think in order to underclock and manipulate these settings coolbits needs to be set to 8 is what I am reading. Will post back when I find out more.
Edit: Enabled coolbits and tried changing clock speed but when I hit enter screen just blacked out. Guess I'll just leave gpu off for chromium.
Edit: Cleaned out computer and replaced thermal paste and no more heat issues.

  • [SOLVED] qemu-kvm high cpu usage when using pulseaudio alsa-plugin

My Arch system is configured to use pulseaudio. When an application connects to the sound server it will use either a native pulseaudio driver, or the pulseaudio alsa-plugin if it using a alsa driver.
qemu-kvm in 'extra' is not compiled with native pulseaudio support. When running guests with sound hardware support, qemu-kvm connects to the sound server using the pulseaudio alsa-plugin.
The problem I'm seeing is high cpu usage on the Arch host even though cpu usage on the guest is low. Also, the guest is often unresponsive for a period of time when opening sound applications like the mixer or playing audio.
My solution is to recompile qemu-kvm with native pulseaudio support. This eliminates the use of the pulseaudio alsa-plugin on the Arch host and fixes the above problems.
An easy was to do this is run:
    yaourt -S qemu-kvm --build
And edit the PKGBUILD changing the line:
    --audio-drv-list=alsa,sdl,oss,esd \
    To:
    --audio-drv-list=pa,alsa,sdl,oss,esd \
Finish building and install. Don't forget to add yourself to the kvm group.

    Problem disappeared.
I'm not sure, but i think installing xf86-video-modesetting helped to fix this issue.
I had an error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log like this:
(EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)

    Hi Xarik1,
After some very brief google searching, it seems that bugs similar to this occur from time to time within chromium.  As a workaround you might try installing a different version, as listed here.  I'm assuming your issue won't be consistent across other browsers, if it is, that would indicate an issue beyond chromium itself, and would help in further problem solving.

  • Firefox causing high GPU usage and fluctuations

I have an NVIDIA GTX 440 graphics card and I like to monitor its speeds and tempratures.
Ive noticed whenever using firefox even when im just scrolling down a page my gpu clock will shoot up to max (822 mhz) and this will of course cause the fan to speed up and make noise.
Its kind of annoying cause when im not scrolling its on idle and quiet, and then I scroll down and suddenly it shoots up. Basically its making my gpu go from max to low constantly and I dont think thats very good for my gpu.
Is there anyway to fix this? I dont see why firefox needs max speed from the GPU.

There should be an issue in bugzilla for this. It's obvioulsy coding defects. Chrome utilize GPU 3-4 times less than Firefox and works smoother. IE10 utilize GPU 10-13 times less than Firefox and works even more smoother than Chrome.

  • [SOLVED] low speed & high CPU usage copying files between two HDD

Both HDD are connected by SATA to the MB. One is in NTFS format (shared with windows 7) and the other one has different partitions.
I'm trying to copy one file (230 MB) from an ext4 partition to the NTFS HDD. The speed is about 40 kB/s and on the system monitor, I can see how one of the cores is about 100 % of usage!
I have done these operations lot of times and never happened something like that.
What should I have to look?

Why are you mounting a flash drive on your fstab? (unless its always in your PC when you boot....or you never want to remove it?)
    unmount the usb (/dev/sdb1)

  • Kswapd0 almost constant high CPU usage

    Hello,
On my Eagle M2, I see kswapd0 using almost constant 50% CPU usage with the latest AOSP.
Can this be related to the big battery drain I'm having? An older AOSP build (end of march with another 3.10 kernel branch) does not have this kswapd0 issue and has a far better battery life.

  • GPU usage at high load

    HI!
Is it normal for the GPU to be at high load when working with Premiere Pro? I understand the app uses GPU but even when idle, not doing anything, it won't drop. Premiere just constantly using GPU.
I uses OpenHWMonitor to see CPU and GPU usages. CPU has varying clock usage, depending what I'm doing in Premiere. But it's at stable 888MHz for my GTX 780 and 1114MHz with GTX 970. Those GPUs' core clocks are constant, no deltas, just fixed values at that speed. It got to a chassis temperature like when I'm playing heavy games. Has anyone checked? Is this normal?

Hello, I subscribed because I also want to share this too.
Yes high gpu load, no rest. Not max load but 3/4 load (idle too), max load only when render effects.
I also use Edius and usage is better because gpu rests when doing nothing unlike Premiere. Even games at loading screen or map or static the gpu have min load. No problem working with Premiere with this condition but bad for gpu life and other components long term.
In one hour use i measure gpu temp, premiere 70c and edius 50c. When render for 10min, premiere 75c edius 73c. The same for render but for working Premiere is bad, if you put electrical component at high temp all the time it will degrades.
Can you measure gpu vrm? I read vrm have even higher temp.

Not doing -Syu leaves you with a broken system.
Using --force on a general -Syu also leaves you with a broken system.
'The mtab conflict' and other such issues are almost always discussed here on the forums, simply running your whole -Syu with --force isn't the best way of dealing with them.

  • Flash player in Chrome high CPU usage

    Laptop Specs:
    Windows 7  64-bit
    Lenovo Thinkpad T410
    Intel Core i5 CPU  m 520 @2.4 GHz
    8.00 GB RAM
This started happening a couple months back (September ish). My laptop run perfectly fine with game play, watching HD movies, running photoshop, etc. It's only when I start up Google Chrome that the CPU usage would spike. It remains under 80% though. With normal internet surfing my CPU usage will teader around 30-40%. When I watch videos via chrome, that's when I have problems. For example, when I watch a "Walking Dead" episode from AMC.com, my CPU usage will spike to 90-100%. After a minute or two my computer will do a hard shut down, as if I pulled the battery out. I'm guessing it is because my CPU is being overworked and over heated. I thought this problem was only with Chrome but when I pulled up the video with internet explorer the same thing happened. I've cleaned my CPU & fan and bought a laptop cooling fan, no help. I've disabled the multiple flash plugins on chrome, no help. I've updated chrome and flash, no help. What should I do? I've read online that this is a common issue. Has there been a solution yet?

    Same problem here:
         - x86 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 5 GenuineIntel ~3000 Mhz.
         - Intel 82945G Express Chipset Family/128MB
         - 4gb RAM
         - Windows XP
The problem is obvious on pages with Flash ads, YouTube (auto resolution), etc. I have the same problem with IE 8; I am guessing, it is not related to the browser.
Ordinary pages with Flash ads keep the CPU at 15%, at least, when not visible; when visible it oscillates from 15% to 90%.
In YouTube the CPU goes to 80% when the video is visible and decreases to 20% when not visible, but it spikes to 30%.
My other, I7, computer has no problem.
Adobe, I hope you will come with a solution. An algorithm should not rely on computer's power.

  • I get daily messages stating high memory usage exists on my firefox. How do I solve this?

A rectangular box shows up once a day on lower right corner of screen. Has a graph on it and says high memory usage. What do I do to lower it?

Thanks, but answers that begin with the word "try", in my experience, are usually just vague guesses.
I found the solution on my own...
Rip out everything Firefox and Mozilla from your computer, including in both Library folders. Throw it all in the trash and empty the trash.
Then download and install a fresh copy of Firefox.
Next time, I will simply rip everything out and LEAVE it out, because this esnips crap is a longstanding MAJOR invasion, mozilla knows it, and they do NOTHING about it. WORSE, it is not possible to contact mozilla in any way. Obviously, they DO NOT CARE!! Otherwise any attempt by esnips to sneak their crap onto a computer would be spotted and INTERRUPTED by Firefox, which obviously, is not the case.
Esnips turns FIrefox into useless crap software. I recommend Googlechrome.
And why on Earth is Mozilla not suing the people who force this esnips junk on their users? Esnips is USING Firefox to sneak into Firefox cusomters' computers and take a big dump in their machines.

  • [SOLVED] Arch64 high RAM usage...

I recently installed Arch64 on my MacBook and everything works fine, however I noticed its using very much RAM in comparison to my 32 bit workstation system (which has 4GB, not all seen o/c in 32 bit, while my laptop has only 2GB). Right now, with only X, musca, firefox and 3 urxvt terms open its using about 25% of it. which comes down to about 500MB. I didn't mind that much until just now I've seen it going up to 64% after I've launched matlab and it remained at this number after I closed it. My system is still responsive and fast, but I'm afraid I'm running out of RAM quite fast this way...thus if this cannot be explained or fixed I'm forced to go back to Arch32.
Is anybody else experiencing this ? I'm running kernel version 2.6.33.4-1 btw, and xorg 1.7.6-3.

    Unused RAM is wasted RAM.
And firefox is KNOWN to be a memory grubby hog.
Let the kernel do it's job. Unless you are specifically having issues(100% ram usages and high swap usage) there is little to worry about.
Also relating to Arch32 v Arch64.64 has a larger memory address(64 against 32) apps will use more RAM.

When loading a page with many hires images, Firefox becomes really slow and scrolling becomes jumpy then eventually becomes completely unresponsive. Unusual high memory usage of up to 2gigs just for firefox when loading these pages. This was never a problem with v3.6.

I encountered the same type of problem. Firefox running terribly slowly and slowing down my entire machine (Core i5 with 256GB SSD). Searching the forums, I found a couple of things about troubleshooting performance issues, one of which was to use '''hardware acceleration''', that is on by default. It was turned on on my PC, '''so I tried deactivating it, and it worked!'''
So doing the exact opposite as Mozilla support said solved the problem. It is really a pain now to work with Firefox. I'm using it because I have no choice, but I'd recommend IE and Chrome over Firefox... Whatever, the market will decide once Firefox has become to crappy...

  • PC with slow boot and pc speed, sudden high pc usage, delay-freeze when opening/performing something

    Hi,
    Before everything, two things:
    1. I'm not a native english speaker so i may have some problems to speak properly/as objective as i'd like to.
2 . I'm writing in this section because i don't know the cause of my pc issues so i can't categorize them.
Now, my computer is a Toshiba satellite L755-S5244, Windows 7 Home premium 64 bits, Intel pentium CPU B940 2Ghz, 4 Gb RAM, and I'm writing this message using it.
I bought the laptop in December of 2011 and at the beggining it was working normally. Someone else used the computer these last months and he left the pc without antivirus protection; when i installed one (Avast) and start to analyze the pc it suddenly shutted down. It wasn't able to boot, so after some trys to restore/enter in safe mode I finally used the Toshiba Recovery Wizard to get the pc to the original factory settings. The process was sucessfull, so the first thing i did after finish the process was install a new antivirus (this time i used Kaspersky Pure) and the the analysis showed no threats as i expected.
However, before the recovery process i realized of some slow performance on the computer, like talking a bit too long to opening files or menus, control panel... almost anything was opening with a little delay even just after start the pc. This problem continued even after the recovery process. Also, an online game -League of legends- which was working fine when i just bought the pc, developed some issue: the screen and the audio randomly frezees for like 3-5 seconds. These problems seems to be related between each other.
But that wasn't all. After the recovery to the original factory settings, i just installed a few things:
-Kaspersky Pure 2.0, CCleaner (free), Mozila Firefox, and League of legends.
Later I also installed Microsoft Office 2010.
The antivirus showed no threats. The game kept with the freeze thing.
And 2 days ago i was playing league of legends and downloading Skype when the pc suddenly got too slow. I restarted it. After the restart it took a long time to boot, and before the windows login screen loaded there was a black screen where only the mouse was showed; the start-up was slow too, (this one showed a blue screen with the mouse too -but not BSOD-) all this took like 15-20 minutes; that never happened before so i restarted the computer again but the problem was the same: slow boot, slow desktop start-up (let's not even talk about opening something).
I went to the repair menu (f8) and try to restore the system but it didn't change anything. I checked for memory issues but there wasn't. I looked also for starting problems but the repair didn't find anything. All in there was saying: "the computer performance seems normal", but it wasn't. Like entering to windows in normal mode was talking to long, i tried the safe mode. It was also slow but not that much. When i entered, a system restore which i wasn't able to performance before in normal mode popped-up and said that the system was restored sucessfully to the first restore point -just after the factory recovery, but it apparently didn't fix the slow bot issue.
Even in safe mode the software was working slow so i decided to go for the toshiba recovery wizard again, and looked in here, the forums -and the rest of the net- for problems like mine.
This time the Toshiba Recovery Wizard took like ages to finish. 3 hours just for recovering, and like 7 more hours just installing the drivers. The boot/start-up was still slow, so i think this was the cause of the slow recovery because the wizard restarts the computer a lot.
When the factory settings recovery finished, the first boot was slow, also the start up, the programs, the start menu, the control panel, ... everything was slow the first time i opened it. If i keep using the same program, it seems normal, but randomly freezes if i select some option, of press something (like this browser, google chrome, even now when i'm writing this message or before where i was registering into the forums). As obvious, because this slow performance i'm really not comfortable using this computer.
I used the HDD SDD Alert but it says the HDD is working fine (the hard drive doesn't make weirds sounds, i almost don't hear it at all); also i did a PC Diagnostic with the PC diagnostic tool and everything passed the test. I can't think of virus/malware because i did the recovery wizard, twice. I just installed Avast again and it didn't find anything. With the task manager i noticed of a high pc usage (almost always 100%) was showing for a really short moment when/after the computer freezes.
So, i don't know how to solve this slow performance.
The last thing i did was download those speed-up softwares: SpeedUpMyPc, RegCurePro, SpeedyPC pro and Pareto logic Health Advisor. They scanned the pc for free and found like 100 system performance issues, but I'm not able to use these programms to fix the issues if i dont buy them. Also i'm not even sure if that will fix my problems.
That's why i'm here, looking for a way to identify/fix them. One last thing: all this time i've been checking the temperature of the laptop but is never hot -now is not even warm. Now i'm afraid of restarting the PC again cuz i know it will take a long time to get into a kinda stable performance like right now.
So that's all.  If you read all this, have my thanks. Also, any help would be really appreciated it.
    EDIT:
A new thing happened. When i try to installed league of legends, the setup told me that my hard drive may be corrupted and the file won't copy, i skip it a few times but the installation took a long of time (half hour) and the error kept ocurring.  I hope this can may be a clue about what is happening to my pc.

    Satellite L755-S5244
If you restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media and still have trouble, then you know it's not due to software.
the setup told me that my hard drive may be corrupted and the file won't copy, i skip it a few times but the installation took a long of time (half hour) and the error kept ocurring.
In particular, that sort of thing occurs when a hard drive is failing. Time to call Toshiba's tech support at 1-800-457-7777 (from the US) or 1-949-859-4273 (from outside the US).

  • Sudden high memory usage, can't find cause

I did a big update yesterday, and today I've started to notice very high memory usage. I wasn't keeping track before so I can't say how much it increased, but I've never had problems before, and the slowness and lack of responsiveness have been noticeable, though I haven't ruled out other possible causes for that. Here's the output of 'free -m':

It wasn't as bad as that right after startup, though usage still seemed suspiciously high. What makes this whole thing a mystery to me is that none of my running processes seem to be using that much memory!  Here's the output of 'top -b -n 1':

Okay, so it turns out that this was caused by the Catalyst bug described in this post. Reverting to the 13.6 version solved the problem. Lesson learned: if there's a ton of memory being used that isn't owned by a running process, start looking for bug reports involving drivers. Especially drivers known for being, well, pretty bad. Was there any method I could have used that would have told me that Catalyst was using all my ram, or is kernel-space memory usage pretty much a black box?

  • High CPU usage while buffering a video

I have a high CPU usage (over 40%) while only buffering this video.
    IE10pre1
Firefox Nightly 20121229, protected mode enabled
Firefox Nightly 20121229, protected mode disabled
    Opera Next
    Chrome Canary
    a) open this url: http://www.wimp.com/marsearth/
    b) pause the video if it starts automatically
    c) use task manager or process explorer to view the cpu/gpu usage
    reproducible: mostly
    Windows 7 SP1
Flash Player 11.6.602.108 / HWA enabled
    TestPC: Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro; AMD Athlon 64 Venice 3200+; 2x 1GB MDT DDR-400-CL2; Club3D HD4670 AGP; Samsung HD103SJ, SyncMaster 204BM

While we're aware of the issue, there's not much we can do about it.  The modern security realities facing web browsers have made sandboxing a necessity.
    There's a good explanation of what's happening here: http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2012/06/inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox.html
Long story short, each video packet has to be passed from the browser to a medium-integrity broker process, then to the low-integrity flash player process for rendering.  If an attacker manages to hijack the Flash Player thread, the process is low-integrity, which prevents the attacker from doing much with it.  While it's not an absolute guarantee (nothing in security is), it raises the bar significantly for attackers.
The downside is that all of that extra message-passing consumes CPU cycles, especially if you're trying to fill an exceptionally large buffer as fast as possible.  There's not a lot of opportunity to optimize this.
If you're fine with the risk, you can manually disable ProtectedMode on your machine.  If you're only dealing with trusted sites, and you're not doing anything critical with the machine (work, banking, etc), then it's probably not a huge deal.
Ultimately, ProtectedMode is like a vaccine -- it's a herd-immunity thing.  If the majority of people run it, exploits targeting machines without it are inconsistent and probably not worth pursuing when you look at the effort involved in developing an end-to-end exploit.  If a large number of people disable it, it becomes economically attractive for people building botnets, and you'll have a problem if you're not using it.
To disable Protected Mode, add the following line to your mms.cfg file located in:
    Windows 32bit: C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash
    Windows 64bit: C:\windows\syswow64\macromed\flash
    ProtectedMode=0
If the mms.cfg file does not exist, create one using any standard text editor (e.g.. notepad)
Depending on your operating system, you might need to first save the mms.cfg file to a writable location (such as your documents or desktop folder) and then copy the file into the destination folder using Windows Explorer.
To re-enable Protected Mode, simply remove the line from the mms.cfg file.
