[Solved] Cinnamon desktop quirks

Hey, I installed the cinnamon desktop, but I can only see my usb drive under the root acount, not under the my user account. I've looked in the wiki, but nothing.  I've got myself added to the groups, but nothing either.
I also can't seem to shutdown from within the menu.
Any help would be great, thanks.

    Hi, I'm running Archlinux with the cinnamon desktop, does anyone know how to achieve the desktop dragging? (Dragging a selection box on the desktop)
    I know it's possible as I've seen Manjaro do it, and Manjaro is based off of Archlinux. I'm going to assume it is a package, or maybe a config file. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Thank you, I have used openbox for about four years now, so I never played with gnome that much, but the recent xorg update broke openbox's logout, so I switched to cinnamon. Overall happy with it, now that I have control over my desktop. Thanks again!

    Sorry, I feel like I should have done some more googling but it only occured to me while writing this post that other universities use eduroam. With a quick google search I found a solution.I will redeam myself by posting my solution.
    1. ip link set wlan0 up where wlan0 is your wireless interface you are trying to connect from.
    2. Create/edit /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf to look like:
    ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
    network={
    ssid="eduroam"
    scan_ssid="eduroam"
    proto=RSN
    key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
    pairwise=CCMP
    group=CCMP
    eap=PEAP
    identity="abc1@university_name.ac.uk"
    password="PASSWORD"
    ca_cert="/usr/share/ca-certificates/mozilla/GlobalSign_Root_CA.crt"
    phase2="auth=MSCHAPV2"
    3. As root:
    wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    4. then dhcpcd wlan0 again where wlan0 is the interface you are trying to connect from.

  • [SOLVED] Cinnamon 2.0.6-2 crashes with pulseaudio-4.0.5

    Hello
    After yesterdays cinnamon update issue have been solved I've proceeded with full system update only to find Cinnamon crashing again, though error comes from different package this time.
    After starting X with startx Cinnamon opens up, then pops message like "Cinnamon has crashed and is running in fallback mode, do you want to restart?" if I restart same thing happens if I don't environment hangs up.
    I have concluded that culprit is libpulse-4.0.5 and/or pulseaudio-4.0.5 since one cant be installed without other there is no way telling witch it is - I've everything else up to date except for these 2 packages and everything is working.

  • [SOLVED] Cinnamon cannot set background in settings

    1. There aren't any wallpapers in background settings.
    2. I cannot add any wallpapers (jpg, png) to the background settings.
    3. My wallpaper now is a default blue color.
    This is a newly installed Cinnamon desktop. I searched related questions, is it because of nautilus? I didn't get a clear solution for this issue. Thank you very much.

  • Cinnamon Desktop GVFS Timeout

    I use the cinnamon desktop. I just did a system update, and now, I get a behavior where after I log in there is a delay before conky and the icons on the desktop appear.
    There are messages in the journal the would appear to be relevant, but I don't quite understand what they mean.
    org.gtk.vfs.Daemon[476]: ** (process:577): WARNING **
    : send_done_cb: Timeout was reached (g-io-error-quark, 24)
    cinnamon-session[468]: WARNING: Application 'cinnamon.desktop' failed to register before timeout
    cinnamon-session[468]: CRITICAL: We failed, but the fail whale is dead. Sorry....
    These messages only appear once per login.
    So it seems this indicates that gvfs is timing out for some reason, but I don't know how to diagnose that any further. Any suggestions for how I could dig into this more?
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • [SOLVED] Cinnamon appearance settings not working.

    I have a strange problem concerning Cinnamon 2.2.0-1 from [community-testing], in which some appearance settings simply do not work. Specifically, I can't change icons or gtk theme, and making any change in cinnamon-settings has no effect whatsoever on the system. I've tried changing the appearance with lxappearance to some success - now the panel and some Gnome3 applications show the selected theme and icons, but the rest of the applications keep the old appearance settings. I have no .gtkrc files in my home folder and I start Cinnamon from LightDM.

    I've got a whole raft of problems with the latest update, which I've listed here.
    EDIT: I'm going to wait until these two are updated before I start reporting bugs, purely because it may just be that not all the updates have been pushed at the same time.

  • [SOLVED] How change language in Cinnamon Desktop Environment

    Hi,

    Things changed recently with the introduction of the "mintlocale" package in Linux Mint, which now handles this in Cinnamon.
    For now, to add new locales you need to still use the /etc/locale.gen and locale-gen way of adding them.
    To change language used, you need the mintlocale package installed.

  • [Solved] KDE Desktop Effects no longer working

    Hello,
    I just did an update, (I didn't think it was a major one, I don't recall seeing graphics update, though I'm not sure how to confirm - is there a way to see recently updated packages in yaourt?) and after a brief issue with powertop that was solved by a restart (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=179789 - it may be unrelated though) I found that when I restarted, KWin Crashed, and since then, my desktop effects are not working.
    I have gone to the KDE Desktop Effects Settings Menu, and under the advanced menu, set the compositing type back to OpenGL 3.1, clicked apply, and confirmed that I wanted to try it even though it had evidently crashed Kwin. I then received a message stating "21 desktop effects could not be loaded". When I clicked details, a popup window said:
    "For technical reasons it is not possible to determine all possible error causes.
    Desktop effect system is not running."
    For the record, I am on a Thinkpad X201 with intel graphics.
    Any ideas?

    Some Extra information:
    I just tried a restart, that didn't work.
    I then went back into effect settings, and saw that "enable effects at startup" was not checked. I also saw that under the advanced settings, Qt Graphics system was set to raster. Since I'm not sure which it was supposed to be on originally, but the current configuration wasn't working, I also set that to Native, and then clicked apply. KWin then crashed, here is the output:
    Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Aborted
    Using host libthread_db library "/usr/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
    To enable execution of this file add
    add-auto-load-safe-path /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.19-gdb.py
    line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
    To completely disable this security protection add
    set auto-load safe-path /
    line to your configuration file "/home/perry/.gdbinit".
    For more information about this security protection see the
    "Auto-loading safe path" section in the GDB manual. E.g., run from the shell:

  • SOLVED: BlackBerry Desktop Manager Has Stopped Working

    Good morning.
    Let me start off by saying I have a Dell laptop runing Vista 64 bit with 4 gig ram.  I have Desktop Manager v 4.7 installed and has been working great synching my Outlook calender and my Blackberry.
    Starting about a week ago, the synch process gets all the way to the end and I get a message saying:
    "BlackBerry Desktop Manager Has Stopped Working" and I have the choice to "check online for a solution and close the program" or "close the program".  When I click on "view problem details I get this:

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I found this on another site:
    1.) Start the Desktop Manager software
    2.) Connect the blackberry using USB Connector
    3.) Select "back-up and restore"
    4.) Select "advanced"
    5.) Look at the list of information showing in the "device memory" window on your computer
    6.) Select "calender all" and DELETE it
    7.) Go back to the main screen and syncronize.
    8.) Everything should work fine!
    In essence it was a corrupt calendar data file on the Blackberry device, apparently.

  • [SOLVED] Cinnamon 2.2.8: Extensions not working

    1. -- Configuring Cinnamon extensions
    NOTE! This problem has been solved. See message #13 for details.
    The first problem I have is that I'm not able to configure any extensions in the recent Cinnamon 2.2.8 in Arch Linux.
    http://s29.postimg.org/v2ierpco7/cinnam … onsbug.png
    When clicking Configure button (either one showed in the picture above or the other on bottom of the main window), I get the following terminal output. On this example, I clicked the button twice:
    Loading Extensions module
    Could not find any instance settings data for this extension - are you sure it is loaded, and supports settings?
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "/usr/lib/cinnamon-settings/bin/ExtensionCore.py", line 475, in <lambda>
    item.connect('activate', lambda x: self._configure_extension())
    File "/usr/lib/cinnamon-settings/bin/ExtensionCore.py", line 1009, in _configure_extension
    settingContainer = XletSettings.XletSetting(uuid, self, self.collection_type)
    File "/usr/lib/cinnamon-settings/bin/XletSettings.py", line 53, in __init__
    self.build_single()
    File "/usr/lib/cinnamon-settings/bin/XletSettings.py", line 145, in build_single
    self.current_id = instance_key
    UnboundLocalError: local variable 'instance_key' referenced before assignment

    My gcc version is:
    gcc (GCC) 4.9.0 20140507 (prerelease)
    and python version:
    Python 3.4.0
    I installed a fresh Arch Linux two days ago so there should not be old configurations etc. in the system.
    2. -- Missing several Cinnamon modules
    NOTE! This problem has been fixed by loqs & clfarron4. It was caused by a missing mintlocale package. Thank you for your attention!
    The second problem I have is lack of the following Cinnamon settings in GUI (cinnamon-settings):
    - region (Regional Settings)
    - Languages
    Output when trying to load, for example, region module:
    [fincer@fincer-laptop ~]$ cinnamon-settings region
    Unknown module region, using cinnamon-control-center
    I already checked folders
    /usr/lib/cinnamon-settings/modules/
    /usr/lib64/cinnamon-settings/modules/
    /usr/lib/cinnamon-control-center-1/panels/
    /usr/lib64/cinnamon-control-center-1/panels/
    I have libregion.so in panels folder but I couldn't find more relevant information related to the problem.
    Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

    Thanks clfarron4. I voted for the package.
    I needed to re-open this topic since it seems that issue number 1 is still alive.
    To be more detailed, I can currently access extension configurations via configure button in cinnamon-settings. However, I noticed that I'm not able to actually change any extension settings and thus, these extensions are not working. In my Linux Mint installation (Cinnamon 2.0.6), they are working perfectly fine.
    So, I still have GUI access to extension configurations but the settings affect nothing, no matter of my customizations. They simply do not run.
    I get this terminal output while running cinnamon-settings and entering to configuration tab:
    Opacify plugin:
    __init__ took 236.561 ms
    Loading Extensions module
    Could not find tooltip for key 'opacity' in xlet '[email protected]'
    Could not find tooltip for key 'beginTime' in xlet '[email protected]'
    Could not find tooltip for key 'beginEffect' in xlet '[email protected]'
    Could not find tooltip for key 'endTime' in xlet '[email protected]'
    Could not find tooltip for key 'endEffect' in xlet '[email protected]'
    Backgrounds plugin:
    __init__ took 309.628 ms
    Loading Extensions module
    Could not find tooltip for key 'path' in xlet 'backgrounds@mohammad-sn'
    Could not find tooltip for key 'time' in xlet 'backgrounds@mohammad-sn'
    My basic question is: what in Earth could I miss here? I have correct extension files & subfolders in both ./.local/share/cinnamon/extensions and ./.cinnamon/configs/.

  • [SOLVED] Plasma Desktop segfaults after recent KDE update to ver. 4.6

    Today after upgrading some amount of packages, including the new KDE 4.6, my Plasma Desktop "segfaults" every single time I login into my account. I tried to send some information regarding this issue using KDE's internal reporting system, but unfortunately it tells me, that those information are irrelevant. Does anyone experience "segfaulting" of the Plasma Desktop after recent KDE upgrade? I'm looking for some help on how to solve this issue, as for the moment my Arch is dead...

    Actually, it is KDE that is giving you trouble, not the OS . When you reach the kdm login screen, don't login. Instead, switch to a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1, for example) and login from there. Then, you can see a list with all your plasmoids with
    plasmapkg -l
    If you find the culprit plasmoid, and it is a plasmoid downloaded outside Arch's repos (from kde-look.org, for example), remove it with
    plasmapkg -r plasmoid_name
    If the plasmoid is installed as a package, it is probably better to uninstall/upgrade it using pacman.
    panosk wrote:do you use some extra plasmoid? if so, you need to rebuild them.
    Hi all,
    I have the same problem. I tried using tty, but I got  "cannot access to X server". Than I tried
    Alt+F2 to run Terminal, I used
    plasmapkg -l
    in order to see the list of all the plasmoids, but I couldn't find the "culprit" plasmoid. I don't know if I am doing it right. Here the list of my plasmapkg:
    [encho@x~]$ plasmapkg -l
    plasmapkg(1986)/libplasma Plasma::PackageStructurePrivate::createPackageMetadata: No metadata file in the package, expected it at: "/home/encho//metadata.desktop"
