[SOLVED] Clamav Desktop file???

I am looking for help in creating a desktop file for the KDE4 service menu,
that will allow me to scan a file/folder, with clamav by right clicking on it.
For me its no problem using the terminal to do this. However, my
girlfriend, is completely terminal phobic. So I need a way for her to scan
files and folders easily.
Any help would be great.
By the way, Using 64bit and Kde4 not kdemod

There are some GUIs for clamav, including this in the AUR:

I use gnome so I've never used this, but it's worth a shot.

  • Quicklaunch opens desktop files with kate [SOLVED]

    Hi guys,
Since a few weeks ago, I'm suffering a pretty weird problem related to Quickalunch plasmoid. Whenever a click on an icon it opens the desktop file I have clicked on with Kate, rather than the selected application itself. I have waited for sometime just in case it was something that gets fixed by upgrading the system, but it doesn't. Out of curiosity, I have removed the whole home directory content of my test user, including hidden ones, log-in and see whether the problem happens with it too, and surprisingly guys, it happens the pretty same weird thing!!
What I have noticed, and I think this might be the root of the problem, that if I go to the /usr/share/applications/ directory and click on any desktop file, it gets opened by Kate. So, I have checked out in System Config ---> File Associtions whether Kate or anything else is bound to *.desktop files, but 'None' is shown. Thus, do you know how I could solve this problem?
Thanks you very much for your support.

    Hi guys,
In the end I have found the solution here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 89#p465989
All I have had to do is to reinstall the shared-mime-info package
    pacman -S shared-mime-info
Somehow, mimes files got messed up!
I hope it helps anyone else!

  • Nautilus and Display of x-desktop files [SOLVED]

    Hello everyone.
For some time now, nautilus has not been properly displaying the icons and name of .desktop files, whereas PCManFM does this properly both in its file manager and on the desktop.  Thus my guess is that it's not a mime-type issue, but an issue with nautilus.
Mostly the issue is regarding Wine desktop shortcuts.  Any thoughts?

Sorry.  I solved this problem by performing chmod +x on all .desktop files.  Nautilus will not display them properly unless they are executable!

I've got a .desktop file that I created in ~/.local/share/applications but is not showing up.  I thought I remembered how to do this but apparently forgot.  By putting it in ~/.local/share/applications it should show in the menu, right?  I created this, and made it executable:

  • [SOLVED]Can't edit .desktop files with Gnome 3. Application disappears

I've been trying to edit the desktop file for gimp so that I can run a custom command when it loads.
Basically I want to run GTK_MODULES= gimp instead of just straight gimp, because the global menu doesn't work well with gimp and running it in this way forces gimp to use the normal menus.
As soon as I edit the file, gimp disappears from my applications menu. If I click on the .desktop file through nautilus, it says there is a problem and it cannot run the application. I'm not sure how to open a .desktop file from the terminal, so I can't look for more specific error messages.
I tried creating a script and pointing the desktop file to that instead, and I tried using GTK_MODULES= && gimp, but both give the same problem. As soon as I click save, it becomes unusable, only fixable by reinstalling gimp.
Do you think it's possible to do what I'm wanting to do?

  • [solved] Hiding certain .desktop files in the XFCE menu?

Is there a way to hide .desktop menu entries in the XFCE menu without removing them from the system?
For example, there is an entry called "Recording Level Monitor" after installing some gnome dependencies for rhythmbox.  It's a useless app to me and I'd like to have it hidden for good.  I suppose I could delete the .desktop file, and I wouldn't hesitate to do so, but I have the feeling it'll keep coming back on -Syu's.

  • On Finder Freeze/Relaunch All my desktop files & icons disappear

    The title sums it up.
When ever my mac decides to go into spinning wheel mode and I have to force quit/relaunch finder, when I relaunch finder every desktop file & icon disappear.
At that point I'm forced to push the shutdown button on the tower and reboot, then all is well until the next time.
And the next time could be a day or a few days or a week. No rhyme or reason why.
Please help me solve this frustrating problem.
    Thanks

Cloud backup plans can slow your Mac down, and if used simultaneously with your Mac's networking, or you have an unreliable internet connection, could be the cause of your freezes.  You may be better off seeing if turning off iCloud temporarily helps.   This can especially be a problem with non-Apple routers whose firmware may not be up to date.   Multitasking with backups can lead to corruption of your backups.  Time Machine should only backup to hard drives twice the capacity of the original, otherwise it spends a lot of time trying to discover which archives to eraes to maintain room.  Here are some other options:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
Energy Saver can also create problems for backups, as it takes a moment for the Mac to recognize the connection.  Use screen saver instead of Energy Saver when backing up.  System Preferences lets you control both.   Putting hard drives to sleep when backing up is ill advised.

  • Documents open in reader XI, then go blank after 8 seconds. whether in IE 11, desktop file, or email

Documents open in reader XI, then go blank after 8 seconds. whether in IE 11, desktop file, or email. This happens at home or at work.  I would expect that this is a common problem with a simple (to other eyes) answer

    Mystery solved.
My .pdf files had been defaulting to Acrobat to open.  I just designated Reader as the default for opening .pdf, and am now able to open those files normally.
Apparently, I installed Acrobat but had not yet confirmed my subscription.  The installation automatically made Acrobat the default for opening .pdf files, then wouldn't allow documents to be displayed for more than a few seconds before closing itself.  I assume that will no longer be the case once the bill is paid.
    Thanks for your responses, Pat.

  • Desktop files disappearing ?

I have a 2010 white Macbook with OS 10.6, and halfway through this morning 85% of my desktop files and icons disappeared while I was elsewhere. I've looked in Spotlight for them, checked the trash, and they are nowhere to be seen - has anyone any idea what has happened and where they might have gone to ? It is bizarre, and even slightly amusing for a moment, but I've looked high and low for them on the machine and can't find them anywhere. Most of my work is contained in those files, so that is worrying, and 40GB's of iPhoto has also gone missing. I have backups, so not a problem, but I'd like to find out what has happened - or is happening - before I reload my desktop, especially if the same thing is going to happen again.

[1] MacDropAny has been busy working for me for months. The way I have it set up it simply syncs my desktop to a copy on the Dropbox server. It's never deleted anything, until yesterday, when it synced a nearly empty desktop back to itself, which as I said, and you then agreed, explains the disappearance on Dropbox.
[2] I'm unsure as to what you mean about Dropbox and copies. If I sync something on my computer to my Desktop, I can still access the file on the laptop with no internet connection, and indeed, often do so. I'm pretty sure you simply have the file on both ends. You can, after syncing, delete the file on either your computer or on your Dropbox without it affecting the other - unless you are using MacDropAny which simply syncs your chosen files instantaneously.
[3} "Business account" simply refers to the size of my Dropbox. I'm a one man band, no one else accesses it.
    CountDOWN
[3] gottit Interesting - leads us to suspect #[1] is perpetrator.
[2] Can you turn MacDropAny off temporarily? If so, run a test. Make a Test.txt file - save to desktop.. Drag/Drop from Mac Desktop to Dropbox icon. What happens to the original test.txt file on your Desktop?
In my experience with such an act, the original 'DIS'appears from the Desktop and 'A'ppears on Dropbox - i.e., as if you moved it on your Mac from one folder to another folder - NOT copied from one HD to another HD. The latter is actually what is happening is it not?
Be interesting to know if MacDropAny prevents  the normal Dropbox behavior I just described.
Dropbox was intended to behave just like another folder on your Mac. No need to SYNC cuz you are working on the file from the Dropbox folder
[1] I am now trying to figger out why you need this syncing App to be involved? Why not just use Dropbox normally? Doesn't solve the mystery....
[0] BLAST OFF !! It is clear that the files/folders on Dropbox disappeared first. MacDropAny then synced that fact. We are back to
Why did they disappear from Dropbox? Not quite square one, but I'll bet that Dropbox support could have some input. Bet they have it all backed up to where they could restore Dropbox to ±the time before the poltergeist struck.

Thanks for the link, unfortunately p7zip-extra didn't add anything to the context-menu. Will continue searching, since I liked the 7zip menu. Anyways - my main problem is now solved - shouldn't be a big problem to manually add that menu back again.
Edit: For future readers - just got back the context-menu entries by re-installing following:
    pacman -S p7zip desktop-file-utils wxgtk

  • Classic2 System-7 desktop file is rebuild every start

    Hi,
I polished my good old Classic2 with a new PRAM battery and a new 2GB HDD. I copied the content of the 80MB Quantum old HDD completely via the SCSI connector to the new 2GB IBM HDD by dragging it with the mouse. With the new HDD everything works fine also the different versions of System-7 I have installed.
However: After each startup the desktop file is rebuilt. How can I stop it?
Any idea how to fix it?
    Thanks!

Been a l-o-n-g time since I used System 7. Look at this link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2344 I'm thinking that you have a "bad" extension. You might try an intentional Rebuild of the Desktop at startup & see if that solves the problem. Another thing to try. Startup with the Shift key depressed. This turns Off extensions - now do you get the rebuild message. If not, use the Extension Manager to turn Off extensions until you find the offending one.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Desktop files are sometimes disappearing.

When I start my computer my desktop files are sometimes disappearing and when I tell the computer to organize the desktop they will return.  I have been using Mac's for 15 years and never have I had this problem until I updated to OS X Mountain Lion.  Can anyone tell me how to fix this.  Is it possible this problem is because I use two monitors?
    Thank you for any help.
    Mark

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

    Hi,
    Try these 3 solutions
    1. Did you start vncserver services as:
    service vncserver start
2.Check that port 5901 has not been blocked by a firewall:
    # nc -vz localhost 5901
You should get a connection and a termination. If you get an error, fix the firewall.
    3. service iptables stop
    Hope This Helps
    Regards,
    -DK

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • You know that whole .desktop file security scare?

    It goes something like this:
    1) Open a malicious email attachment or go to a website with malicious javascript or whatever...
    2) A program is downloaded and executed with your permissions
    3) It edits ~/.local/applications/synaptic.desktop or whatever other popular program.
    4) In the new .desktop file it adds to the run command some nasty key logger, so now when you launch Synaptic (or pacman if someone were to attack Archers) it logs your keystrokes.
    5) Now it has your root password and can do whatever it wants.
I just want to know: How likely is this, really??
Can a website seriously just download and run a file without me knowing? I doubt Firefox would let that happen... Or could an email attachment be executed without me being able to read it first? I'm pretty sure it can't...
I don't understand why people seem to be concerned about .desktop files...
I'm not even worried about my Windows machine on my home network. My router is set to reject as much stuff as it can and all computers have remote log-ins disabled. The only security problem I worry about is that my Fiancee's online courses actually send .doc's through the net, which I've heard is bad practice.

What I've read about it has a nasty tweak, a properly crafted .desktop file could launch a dialog asking for your/root password, at that time it wrecks havoc in the system and open the add/remove software, updates or whatever is it disguised to do and the user doesn't realize what just happened.
Of course there is always the other option of running as user and do whatever it can, if the creator is smart and lucky enough he/she will be able to put a nasty payload on the autostart list and the user can have a zombie machine without even knowing.
It doesn't need to break the system to do a lot of damage, wiping or stealing data from the user account is enough. Of course, this has a higher probability of happening if you run and/or install everything you find in untrusted places without proper review first.
The thing is that there are so many distros and so many versions of each distro, each with slightly different settings, DEs, browsers and whatnot that I guess it still isn't worth the bother unlike with platforms where everyone uses the same browser, possibly the default settings that come with a clean system install and worse, no security updates/patches.
Add to this the complete lack of good sense and the common (and somewhat accepted I guess) practice of using cracks and keygens for you know what and you start to understand how come at least some users keep getting the same problems over and over again.
These days with linux it is extremely easy to keep the system up to date with the latest security fixes, users tend to look free alternatives to payed programs and look first in the package manager to see if it is already available, this alone helps a lot, add a dose of good sense and you should be good to go.
