[solved] claws-mail pop hanging on certain messages

Hi!
Anyone noticed something like this? Not entirely sure what's happening yet and what to do...
claws-mail seems to hang when trying to retrieve certain messages via pop3(ssl). If I remove a certain mail from the /cur folder on the server, all the other messages get pop'ed just fine (I'm not sure, if the mail that needs to be deleted is the same as the one where claws-mail hangs!). Thunderbird manages to "pop" all messages. I haven't been able to figure out, what kind of messages make claws-mail hang. Seems not to be content related though (I've have lots of identical ones, only a few trigger the bug) - and it's about one in 10 messages that cause the problem. Might be something with missing uidl's caused by the server spam filter - I could find the "buggy one" that made clawsmail hang in the filesize cache on the server, but not in the /cur directory.  But I might have messed that up...
Well, I'm stuck & my head hurts. Maybe more investigating tomorrow... -.-"

Had the same problem. POP3 with SSL hangs on receive. Went down to 3.7.5, no avail. I just read here (http://claws-mail.org/pipermail/users/2 … 04032.html) about gnutls and downgraded to cached 2.10.4-1 now it seems to work.

  • Mail.app crashes when certain messages are selected

I recently migrated a user from OS X 10.4 to 10.5. When we run Mail.app, it will crash when certain messages are clicked.
I've tried everything I could to get the mail in in a different way -- importing it in different ways, deleting ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist, and re-importing, etc.
It certainly seems that the problem is tied to the individual message, as clicking on a certain message, even if it is in different folders (because of the way it was imported) causes the crash.
Most of the dozen-or-so crash logs start like this:

My guess, the email(s) are from windos users?
I had this problem, until I switched to thunderbird. A few people, using a version (don't remember the version number) of outlook/outlook express, would send multimedia attachments.
As soon as I would select the email, Mail would crash.
I would copy the offending email to a folder with no other contents, and then open it up with TextEdit, to view the non-attachment portion.

  • Mail won't download certain messages

    Hi all
I'm having a problem retrieving mail that I send from my iBook G4 (using Mail 3.5) to my iMac, i.e., I'm sending messages to myself. The messages make it to the gmail server (I can see them there) but Mail (also 3.5) on the iMac will not download them. It retrieves all other messages, either before or after, but not the ones I sent to myself from the iBook. It's like Mail doesn't see them. Anybody ever hear of this?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
I am in the process of testing for another poster in the topic at the link below:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1769402&tstart=0
The tests have not yet pointed to any problem, so still looking.
Are you accessing your Gmail account as POP or IMAP?

  • Mac Mail POP Account Not Receiving Messages

Using Mac Mail, I am suddenly not receiving messages in a POP account. The gmail account I use is working normally. Under connection doctor both accounts are green. Help, please?

Same problem here since upgrading to Mail 7.1 (1827). All the settings are seemingly correct. The emails are marked as 'Read' on the server but are not downloaded.
The emails are also deleted a week later as set in preferences.
Thinking the emails may have gone elsewhere I used Spotlight to look for them. No success there.
Real puzzle and yet another glitch on the latest Apple Mail.
Come on Apple, get your act together.

  • Mail freezes when opening certain messages

I have a few messages that I cannot open on mail , when I click on them the searching wheel starts to spin and freezes there and I need to force quit mail.

I've had the same problem for a while and I think I might have found a solution. I posted the below in a different forum. Let us know if it works for you:
So, I was reading the following document:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25717
and this got me thinking that it might be a font issue. So I followed the instructions and looked at the font I have set as my default font, in my case Trebuchet MS, using Font Book (in your applications folder). Anyway, I noticed that there were two copies of "regular" installed. I disabled one of them and then I was able to respond to an email that was hanging all morning!!!!
So, look at your fonts for anything that looks suspicious like corrupted fonts (see document link) or duplicate fonts, etc....
I will report back if my Mail problems comes back again.

  • Mail hangs when receiving messages

This past week, without any recent software/hardware changes or updates, Mail started hanging while new messages were coming in. I have three accounts set up-- two MobileMe which seem to not be the problem-- and one POP mail account with MSN. At first I thought the problem was a firewall issue because it happened on my laptop at work. However, when I bring the laptop (MBP) home and run it off Airport WiFi there, the problem persists, even though my home MacPro, set up the same way, works fine. Now, the only way to get out of Mail on my MBP is to force-quit. I've tried repairing permissions, replacing plists, deleting and re-creating mail accounts-- even transferring the working plist from my MacPro to my MBP. Regardless, incoming messages hang at "Incoming Message 16 of XX" with the kb/sec eventually slowing to 0.0 in the Mail Activity window. Anyone with a similar problem or luck with a fix? I'm running latest Mail and Snow Leopard versions.

I have exactly the same problem. I have two laptops, one running OS 10.6.2 and the other a G4 Powerbook running !0.5.8. On the Snow Leopard machine the iMap accounts (x4) are working fine, but hotmail mail and one Pop3 account both behave the same way - hanging indefinitely exactly half way through completion of the download of a couple of dozen emails, with download speed dropping to 0k. It has not been possible to download anything from either account now since November 6th. I have to check the mail on these two accounts via a web interface. The only solutions I have heard so far seem quite hit and miss. I am not particularly keen to do anything so radical as back up, reformat the hard drive, and re-instal the System / buy a new computer, or any of those other drastic fix-all-solutions sometims proposed when people cannot guess what is wrong. An informed work around would be very much appreciated.

  • Mail not displaying certain messages

Mail is suddenly not displaying certain messages in mailboxes. I can see and select the message in the center pane, but when I click on it to display, I get the "Loading" text and the spinner. This continues without resolution, though sometimes the messages will display after quitting Mail and/or rebuilding the Mailbox.
It is not random messages that do this, but always the same ones that refuse to display. But they will display sometimes after a rebuild, so I know they aren't gone.
Some have image attachtments, others do not.
This just started this morning, following running Disk Utility to repair some HD corruption last night. Prior to that, Mail (and Safari) had been running very slowly for about three weeks.
I have already repaired permissions on this drive.

    Acutab,
I had the same problem. I took your advice and rebuilt the mailbox-voila. The problem was solved. I have also noticed Safari running slow. I will try and run Disk Utility

  • Mail hang during large message download

I've noticed several times when I get emails that either exceed the auto download size threshold, or have large attachments on them that Mail will 'hang' during the download. I can exit out of the message but it's still spinning away and won't get any more email from the server.
I'm using a Pop email account. The only fix I've found is to "magic power cycle" the mail app using the sleep button / home key hold down. Once mail starts after this the message will fully download. It's been happening for a while, but I wanted to be sure it wasn't a fluke.
Anyone else run across this & find an easier workaround?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I have been having no end of problems with email since upgrading to 10.5 about a month ago.
Generally, after some time, various activities hang around in the Activity window (such as "evaluating message n of m") and prevent normal email updates and quitting. Neither Apple support nor the local Apple Genius were able to assist. Even reinstalling the OS (10.5.2, 10.5.3, or 10.5.4) and rebuilding the user account manually did not work. I tried running "Sample Process" in Activity Monitor on Mail.app and noticed a lot of "semaphorewait_signaltrap"s that seemed to be related to AddressBook. This led me to the following process which has (at least for now) fixed my problem:
    1. Quit (or Force Quit) Mail.
    2. In Address Book, use File>Export>Address Book Archive... to dump the contents of the address book.
    3. Quit Address Book
    4. Rename your ~/Library/Application Support/Address Book folder to something else (in case you want to restore it later)
    5. Start Address Book
    6. Use File>Import>Address Book Archive... to restore the contents of the address book
It may be voodoo, but it worked for me.

  • Displaying certain messages by e-mail

Is it possible to display certain e-mails by e-mail instead of name, if that makes sense? I am forwarding e-mails from a hotmail account and since it is registered under the same name as my mail account, it displays my name in the from section when I want it to display my e-mail. Thanks.

I don't think this is something you can control by account.
If you are just trying to keep the messages separate so you can identify them, then you can create a new mail box, and build a message rule that says if the message is from a certain address to move the message to the new mailbox.

Your icloud storage must be full, from emails, backups, and other data.
    Go to
Settings>General>Usage.  This tells how much storage is used on both iCloud and on the device.

  • HT1277 I can recieve emails but I can't send them out.  The blue bar at the bottom left of the Mail page gets half way across and then the pop-up "Cannot send message using the server" comes up?  What do I do?

I have my Yahoo Mail "poped" over to Apple Mail.  I can recieve emails but I can't send them out.  The blue bar at the bottom left of the Mail page gets half way across and then the pop-up "Cannot send message using the server" comes up?  What do I do?

Your outgoing mail server is different than your incoming server. Usually the outgoing mail server will have smtp in it. I noticed yours said "cannot send message using the server mail.wavecable.com". That sounds like an incoming mail server. Try setting your outgoing mail server to smtp.wavecable.com
    I hope that helps.

  • Mac Mail Pop Up Message

I recently reactivated my Road Runner cable internet service after a four month hiatus. As far as I know all my Preferences for the email account were the same as when I shut off the service in June. All I changed was under Advanced Tab where I checked the Enable Acct. box. When I open Mac Mail I get the following pop up message:
The mailbox “~/Library/Mail/[email protected]/Deleted Messages.mbox” is currently locked by “John Cuddeback” on host “cpe-66-25-148-214.austin.res.rr.com”. If you open a mailbox that already is in use, you may damage its contents.
If I select the Open Anyway radio button, I can go the one of the mail boxes where a new message is indicated and open the box and see the mail. However, I keep getting additional copies of the email every time the Mac Mail checks the Road Runner server. The only way I can stop getting copies of the same email is to go to the Road Runner server and delete them.
I have contacted the ISP and when I say Mac they start scratching various parts and say check with apple.com. Any suggestions??

First off, I suggest you not post this kind of
account info in the clear in a public forum for
    security & anti-spam reasons.
Regarding the message itself, do you have the web
mail interface for this account open at the same time
you are using Mail to access the account? Have you
logged out of the web mail version before using Mail?
It sounds like some other client app or possibly the
web mail interface has opened a session with the
account & hasn't closed it, preventing Mail from
setting its own lock with the server for its own
    session.
Thanks. I just went into Road Runner and changed all the account passwords then made corresponding changes in the Mail Account passwords. This seems to have worked.

  • After Yosemite, a new email message causes Mail to hang

After upgrading to Yosemite last evening, opening a "compose new message" window in Mail causes Mail to hang (crash?). I'm able to receive email messages, but  I can only send messages by booting my MacBook Air in "Safe" mode. (Opening Mail in "safe" mode does not keep Mail from crashing when I open a "compose new message" window.)
I haven't been able to get far enough to see if trying to "send" a message will make Mail crash. Just opening a "compose new message" window and trying to put the cursor in the address line, subject line, or message area will cause Mail to spin away into infinity.
I do use three Mail add-ins: MailTags, Mail Act-On and the Daylite Mail Assistant; but all of those are the most current versions and their developers claim that they are compatible with Yosemite.

Welcome to Yosemite beta. I havent been able to use Mail since I "upgraded" 4 days ago. Apparently the solution is to wait until Apple figures out what went wrong.

  • Certain messages crash Mail

I've had this problem with a couple of emails. It started the last couple of days. I can't open or preview the messages, can't forward to another email or do anything, when I click on these messages mail just crashes. Both messages are sent from another Mac and appear to be just plain and simple text.
Mail is opening other messages just fine.

BACK UP YOUR EMAIL IMMEDIATELY. I'm not sure if you are using FileVault, but this recently happened to me and shortly there after, I opened my mail one morning and it was all gone.....everything! It turned out that my FileVault was corrupt. I spent the better part of 2 days at my local Apple store with the staff at the Genius bar getting back up and running. Hope this helps.
PS: I am still having a problem with Mail "unexpectedly quitting"....very frustrating still.
