[Solved] "Clean" font for other distros

as mentioned in this thread, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=69155 and a few others, the font called "Clean" can be installed from xorg-fonts-misc... but i want this font in debian based crunchbang as well as my arch and gentoo installs.  though i have the font in gentoo and arch, i cannot seem to find a font file to copy to my debian.
where can i acquire this font to take with me to my other distros?
or does it simply not exist anywhere as a regular font file?

thnx whitehorn, that was the first thing i tried, and i got the same.  i too have proggyclean (and several other prog* fonts), but it's not the one i'm looking for.
thnx karol.  xlsfonts seems handy.    still cant seem to find "Clean" though.
thnx thisoldman.  i'm not looking for "one of the clean fonts".  i'm looking for "the font called "Clean"", of which, there's only one i'm aware of.  from what i could tell, from putting clB6x10.pfc (+.gz)  in my fonts directory, it's not the one.
the specific font i'm looking for, shows up in font selection lists, simply named as "Clean".  it never changes size (8pt i think), is mono-spaced, and is always pixel perfect.
i've found http://dev-sham.blogspot.com/2011/02/using.html (after searching "font called clean"), but it didnt seem to work.
... i think i'll take this to a more relevent forum... i thought it'd be a simple case of someone telling me "you can get it from /usr/share/somewherelessobvious".

  • [SOLVED] PKGBUILD equivalents for other distros

I'd like to package some of my tools for other distros - mainly .deb and .rpm based for now.  Ideally, I'd like to not have to build full packages for each distro, but instead host build scripts or equivalents of PKGBUILDs for other distros.  As I am not nearly as well versed in other distros as I am with arch, I'm not sure how to find the needed information to accomplish this.
To take .deb as an example, the pacman rosetta page suggests debuild is the equivalent tool to makepkg.  However, the debuild man page indicates that debuild can simply be run within the source tree to build a package.  Certainly this can't be the case, unless there are distro-specific files within that source tree that debuild finds and uses.  That man page does not indicate what these files are and how they are written.
I have found documentation for creating full binary packages for debian-based distros, but is there an equivalent to a PKGBUILD?  I know for Gentoo, ebuilds are well documented and should be quite doable.  But frankly I'm pretty sure most gentoo users wouldn't need my help with those.  I'm currently primarily targeting .deb as many novice linux users that I'd like to make a couple of my tools available to seem to use ubuntoo.
I suspect I may just be missing the proper documentation and/or am not using the right search terms.  Any nudges in the right direction would be appreciated.
(edit: marked 'solved' as I now have the information I needed to get started working on this - but more input can always be handy.)

I recently discovered Debian's `checkinstall` which is very close to what I was looking for.  One can easily create a script that will download and install a "non-debianized" source package as a .deb that can be managed by dpkg/apt-get.
Allegedly it can also create rpm packages, but I'm not going to worry about trying that out for a while.
A simple example of a script to allow debian/*buntu users to install one of my packages can be seen here.  There is an executable script called `makedeb` - guess what it does.  There is also a package-specific file called DEBBUILD - guess what that's for .  With just those two files, a debian user could run the script which would get the needed info from the DEBUILD to install the needed dependencies, download and build the source, install under the watch of checkinstall to a temp directory, have checkinstall build a .deb package, remove the builddeps (and optionally all deps installed during the build), and leave them with a *.deb file ready for dpkg.
This instance of makedeb was intentionally made generic so it could work for other packages, however it is also *very* simple and so will not work for all other packages.  A DEBBUILD is nearly identical to a PKGBUILD, except the dependency names need to be converted to the debian deps (and there may be many more deps needed as you cannot assume our base/base-devel components are there ... and split -dev packages suck).
Making this DEBBUILD + makedeb made me wonder how hard it would be to convert our own makepkg over to work on top of apt-get/dpkg.  I've installed debian (crunchbang) on one of my systems to experiment with this.  I've realized there may not be much to it really.  I've just completed my revision to the actual makepkg script (and makepkg.conf) to make a full featured makedeb and makedeb.conf.  It is not yet tested - and once I test it I may find it is not nearly as complete as I had hoped.  But the goal is to allow PKGBUILD -> DEBBUILD conversions to be quite easy (just change the deps).
I may post my full featured makedeb in "community contributions" if/when it passes a few basic tests.  It will not run on arch, but it is suited for archers who need to make debs.  It may eventually run on arch (there are dpkg is in the AUR, and so is checkinstall, though it is very broken ATM), but this is not a goal of mine.

  • Packaging for other distros

    Hi all,
Does anyone create packages for other linux distros exclusively on Arch?
I use cmake's cpack functionality to create windows installers, debs, rpms, and source packages (all on Arch).  I've been able able so far to also make debian repos also.  Lately I've been trying to see if it's even possible to make PPA's on Arch, but all the tutorials I've come across requires Ubuntu's debuild tool? Has anyone ever tried to do PPA's on Arch?

PirateJonno wrote:Not sure if this is relevant, but I use Arch to make .deb packages for my n900, inside a chroot. However, I have no idea how the thing is actually set up (there is a script that does it automatically). You might be able to just compile the sources you need, but it could become complicated very quickly.
Could you elaborate on this? I have to make and update .deb packages, but being quite the novice at this sort of thing, I use VirtualBox with Debian in it. If there's a way to do that in Arch, that would be an enormous improvement over the current situation

  • How can i set different font for different tabs/pages

I want to set different fonts for different tabs/pages?
is it possible to do the same? If yes how?
I can change the fonts under tools>options>contents>advanced. but that changes global settings.
tried some add ons too- but that too changes the global settings.
some pages like tweetdeck do not display icons etc properly under custom fonts.
when i check "allow pages to select their own font" tweetdeck shows up fine but a number of other pages show fonts that are too big or some non standard fonts.
Is there a way where i can select site default fonts for some sites/tabs, and custom fonts for other sites/tabs?
otherwise i have to open different sites in different browsers- say i use my custom fonts- which apply globally, and open tweetdeck etc in Internet Explorer or Chrome etc. if i can have all tabs in one window/browser, that would be great.

It's not a built-in feature to override a page's styles on a tab-by-tab or site-by-site basis, but perhaps someone has created an add-on for this?
It also is possible to create style rules for particular sites and to apply them using either a userContent.css file or the Stylish extension. The Greasemonkey extension allows you to use JavaScript on a site-by-site basis, which provides further opportunity for customization. But these would take time and lots of testing to develop and perfect (and perfection might not be possible)...
Regarding size, does the zoom feature help solve that part? In case you aren't familiar with the keyboard and mouse shortcuts for quickly changing the zoom level on a page, this article might be useful: [[Font size and zoom - increase the size of web pages]].

  • [Solved] Clean reinstall and partioning choice

    Hi,
I have 2 computer, 1 desktop and 1 HTPC (server, NAS, ...). I will move a 1To HDD from my desktop computer to the HTPC (for mirroring) and replace it by a 160Go HDD.
So I will make 2 clean installations.
    Actual desktop partitions :
    1To HDD
    |_ some place for Win7 (will be lost in the new install)
    |_ Old and unused ext2 boot partition
    |_ LVM2 for the rest
        |_ 4.3Gb for swap (maybe too much)
        |_ 818Gb for /home (ext4)
        |_ 5.4Gb used as "live usb key" when I install other distro for testing
        |_ 35Gb for / (ext4)
        |_ 32Gb for other distro root (ext4)
My HTPC is disconnect right now, but the partioning is something like :
    1To HDD
    |_ Old and unused ext2 boot partition
    |_ LVM2 for the rest
        |_ 35Gb / (ext4)
        |_ The rest for / (ext4)
I have few questions for the new installation.
What is the advantage of a dedicated /var partition (idem with /usr, ...) ?
One of the goal is to use different filesystems I suppose, so I need advise to choose which one depending on the usage.
I have no experience with btrfs and subvolumes, Is it going to replace LVM2 ?
Of course I understand that these questions will have different anwsers for my desktop and HTPC computer.
For the HTPC, is there a way to create a RAID1 array with only one disk, copy data from another to the RAID and then append it to the array (am I clear ?)
    Thanks
ps: For the desktop partioning, I make some android, web and C development.
For the HTPC, it will be used as a server too (web, git, ...) and NAS (nfs, upnp, ...) and HTPC with xbmc

You realize that 30GB for your rootfs is not at all necessary.  Unless you plan to install every DE you can, you are just wasting the space.  With rotational disks too, there is the chance that spreading stuff out too much can cause unnecessary amounts of movement with the drive heads while they seek over that mass amount of space.
The idea with LVM is that it makes it so that partitions can be grown and shrunk as needed.  So I think it is best to start with only what you need, and if in the future, your needs change (read: you need more space) you can expand the logical volumes.  LVM2 provides the convenience of a partition being able to use any available space as well.  So that means that if you have a logical volume 'a' which is followed immediately by logical volume 'b', if they were normal partitions, you would have to move 'b' over so that you could expand 'a'.  But LVM will simply use whatever disk space it sees fit and available (extents actually), helping you avoid all that.

  • Cannot change font for UTF-8 pages in FF 4.0.1

No matter whether I change Options > Content > Default font, or go to Options > Content > Advanced and set Sans Serif for Other Languages, nothing changes—for instance, on this forum. Everything's still Times New Roman from the looks of it.
The Sans Serif font for Other Languages is set to Arial.
There's no Unicode entry in the list. The Other Languages is the closest I could find.
I have Options > Content > Advanced > Allow pages to choose their own fonts… unchecked.
I made similar changes for Western, and that worked—for pages detected as having ISO-8859-1 encoding.
Is this a bug? Or am I doing something wrong?
    <rant>
On a more general note, I think that the font setup in Firefox is so over-complicated. I personally want all my pages in a single font, and I don't care if some weird languages are displayed incorrectly with it. I bet that most people do want the same, even them who speak those weird languages. It's just a matter of picking one font that works for the languages you care about.
Now that might not work perfectly for everybody so there should be an advanced option—an ability to add overrides. It should be similar to how it works now but the list of overrides should be user-customizable and '''empty by default.''' So that we regular people don't bother ourselves with encodings and languages we're never going to use.
I wonder if I'm the only one who's disappointed with FF's font settings. Couldn't find anything on this topic on the 'net.
    </rant>

'''Xircal:''' this does not seem to be the case. When I go to Options > Content > Advanced > Other Languages I can see that Proportional is set to Sans Serif, and that Sans-Serif is set to Arial. The following line is also in my about:config:
    font.default.x-unicode user set string sans-serif
'''cor-el:''' yes this is the address. While on this page, if I go to View > Character Encoding, the active selection is Unicode (UTF-8).
'''Edit:''' if I manually change this site's encoding to Western (ISO-8859-1) the font changes to that I specified for Western encoding in Advanced font options.

  • Set a standard font for Outlook through group policy

    Dear All,
We are using exchange 2010 and domain 2008 server in our company. For outlook we are using 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013. Now we are plans to set a standard font and default font size for sending and replaying through
outlook. We need to set this one through group policy.
Your support will be highly appreciated

    Hi,
We can deploy default font for same version of Outlook, I haven’t found a way to change the font among different versions. The only way to achieve this is deploy font for each version of Outlook separately:
Set default font for Outlook 2003, please refer:
    http://thommck.wordpress.com/2009/05/28/standardising-outlook-fonts-using-group-policy-preferences/
To set default font for other versions of Outlook, please refer to the steps below:
    1. Set the font you want in one computer.
Outlook 2007: click Tools > Options > Mail Format > Stationary and Fonts.
Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013: File > Options > Mail > Stationary and Fonts.
    2. Export the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\XX.0\Common\MailSettings
XX.0 is the version of your Office. 12.0 for Outlook 2007, 14.0 for Outlook 2010 and 15.0 for Outlook 2013.
    3. Distribute the .reg file via Group Policy.
For more information, please refer to the following article and look at the “Changing Default Font for Outlook 2007” section:

  • [solved] os-prober doesn't find my other distro anymore (for grub2)

Yesterday, I added the lts-kernel to my system.
Doing a grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg found both arch kernels, but it can't find my backup distro anymore. (That worked before! Haven't changed anything regarding that.)
The kernel of the other distro is on /dev/sda5 which is mounted, readable and accessible.
    Output of:
    # os-prober
    No volume groups found
The "No volume groups found" message isn't bad, as on my other system, this message appears, too, and the other distro is mentioned after that message.
I know there are many threads about such things here, but nothing helped me. (using grub-customizer, rebooting, updating)
    Any ideas?

OK, as os-prober doesn't want to work here, I did it the manual way:
    I edited /etc/grub.d/40_custom by hand and run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg afterwards.
If it is useful for someone, here is my custom /etc/grub.d/40_custom:
    #!/bin/sh
    exec tail -n +3 $0
    # This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
    # menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
    # the 'exec tail' line above.
    menuentry 'Ubuntu, mit Linux 3.8.0-20-generic' {
    set root='hd0,msdos5'
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.8.0-20-generic root=UUID=090171f7-aff2-45d8-a4eb-2e22280ad7bc rw quiet
    initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-20-generic
I got the values from the /boot/grub/grub.cfg of my old ubuntu (yeah, kill me! ;-) ) installation.

  • [Solved]urxvt does not search the font for emojis while gnome-terminal

Hi, I'm using urxvt and am having some problems setting up fonts. These are my URxvt parameters specifying the fonts
    URxvt*font: xft:Inconsolata-dz for Powerline:style=Semibold:pixelsize=14:antialias=true:hinting=slight, \
    xft:PowerlineSymbols:pixelsize=14:antialias=true:hinting=slight, \
    xft:Symbola:pixelsize=14:antialias=true:hinting=slight
Now, the emojis from Symbola does not appear and it only appears as a box
The same thing when opened in Gnome-terminal properly displays the emojis
Also, I have tried starting urxvt with the following options
    urxvt -fn "xft:Symbola"
and it works but as you see Symbola is not a font for your terminal.
What am I doing wrong here? I've check my previous lines and it is right. Do you guys have any ideas? Much appreciated. I have also tried with other posts stating that Urxvt cannot display symbols properly and have tried them all. If I've missed any please let me know. The strange thing is that it works for Gnome-terminal and Urxvt with only Symbola fonts

Make sure the System Locale is set to utf-8 locale.
    This sometimes is the issue.
Many thanks for your reply, I've checked the system locale is proper. I think I have found the solution.
I think the official rxvt-unicode faq and documentation here states that rxvt-unicode drops pixels while showing some fonts because different fonts use different height and width. In this particular case, Symbola font is too wide and the default letterSpace does not allow it to display correct. If -letsp parameter is set to 4, it is displaying but with about a half pixel missing
    The specific parameters for .Xresources
    URxvt*font: xft:Inconsolata-dz for Powerline,xft:Symbola
    URxvt*letterSpace: 4
And this gives this which technically solves the issue
The documentation clearly states the following
All of this requires that fonts do not lie about character sizes, however: Xft fonts often draw glyphs larger than their acclaimed bounding box, and rxvt-unicode has no way of detecting this (the correct way is to ask for the character bounding box, which unfortunately is wrong in these cases).
I guess the first thing one should do is to check the documentation thoroughly of the official project page rather than searching countless forums where people have discussed stuff based on trial and error. I guess that's a classic rookie mistake and I feel very good that I'm moving past the rookie phase

  • If exporting images for backup, to reimport into a clean aperture or other program, is it best to use 72 dpi or 300 dpi, or does it matter?

If exporting images for backup, to reimport into a clean aperture or other program, is it better to use 72 dpi or 300 dpi, or does it matter?  I want the best quality for any future unforeseen use.

I am somewhat reluctant to answer your questions after Frank Caggiano's excellent advice, but I really do not like to leave the question open, for there will be many occasions when you will need to export images and to understand how it works.
But please, follow Frank's advice, right now you do not need to worry about pixels and dpi. That is exactly what I meant, when I suggested to you to make sure you keep a copy of your Aperture Library and to back it up with all your other data, before you erase your disk for a clean reinstall.
    DPI revisited:
So, is the dpi setting only for exporting to print?
The dpi settings are necessary to define the size of a digital image, since pixels don't have any dimensions. And since you cannot print or display an image without knowing its width and height, you will need to specify dpi when you are printing or scanning.
If I leave it at the default 72dpi will there be any problems getting quality prints in the future from jpeg versions exported with that setting?
Not if you export with the original size - the maximum number of pixels available. That will ensure the maximum print quality.
The dpi settings are required to export versions; versions are derived from the masters and new image files are computed. When you export masters you get a copy of the original file that already may have a dpi setting.
If I choose "export masters", will aperture will export my masters just as they are?
yes, and  you may add IPICT data if you choose
Pardon my thick skull--I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks in this digital world!
No apologies necessary, we were all beginners once
Here is another example, maybe that helps a little:
I exported an image (jpeg) with three different setting: export masters, a version with 72dpi, a version with 300dpi and inspected the files in Graphic Converter:
The master was exported like this:
Notice, the master had already dpi settings, although I did not specify any on export.
The size is 51,48 cm x 38,61 cm.
The 72 dpi Version has larger dimensions, but also 10 Megapixels.
and here the 300 dpi version: smaller dimensions, same amount of pixels.

What I did (in this order) was, set YouTube to HTML 5, bring Flash up to date, fontrestore, clean font cache with Fusion, reboot.
So far it has now remained fixed for me.  I have Mavericks and it is up to date.
    by ‘fontrestore’ I mean
         sudo fontrestore default
in terminal as described on http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/113107/how-to-restore-default-fonts-on- mavericks
fontrestore removed some of my fonts from my System and Library, but I moved them all back in on the theory that I might want to add fonts, but was not looking to remove them.
I don’t know which of these steps solved the problem.  All I know is what I did and what the result was for me.  As always, use ‘sudo’ at your own risk.
