[SOLVED] Compiz fusion-icon won't run

Hello,
I'm new to Arch Linux and I've just installed it on my laptop. I want to run Compiz on XFCE: I tried the methods on the Arch Wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … icon.22.29) on replacing XFWM with Compiz. The second method doesn't work, only the first one works, but I don't want to use that one.
I've tried the third method, but when I followed the instructions and I rebooted my computer, I've got no window manager at all: I have to manually load Compiz.
The only thing that works right now is following the third method and also do the first one at together.
But I just want to do either the second or the third method. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Thank you in advance.
(Sorry for bad English).

Hi, I didn't mean running Compiz as root: I just edited this file: "/etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml" to make Compiz start for all users. I followed the method without the fusion icon this time (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … icon.22.29) and everything works now.
Thank you very much for the help.
(P.S.: I don't know how to mark this thread as SOLVED).

    I searched in the repos, but I coulnd't find a package called "glxinfo".

  • [SOLVED]Compiz Fusion doesn't start!

    Hello,
    After an upgrade Compiz Fusion doesn't start. Normally I start Compiz Fusion with the command:
    fusion-icon
    But now it gives on a terminal the following output:
    fusion-icon
    * Detected Session: gnome
    * execution of "which glxinfo" failed
    * Error: glxinfo not installed!
    I searched with Yaourt on "glxinfo", but there is no package called "glxinfo".

    Hello,
    The problem is solved. Instead of
    fusion-icon
    I use
    compiz-manager

  • KDE4 question - Built-in effects compared to compiz/fusion icon/emeral

    Hello i am new to the forums and i've been using Arch for a few months now, but i have a couple of questions.
    I was a hardcore KDE user in the 3.X days, but when 4.0 first launched i was confused and shocked, so i decided to give Gnome a try and its pretty darn nice, and i have been using it for awhile now.  I just did a fresh install with KDEmod 4.2.1 to see if things have changed and i'm a bit confused.
    1. What is the relationship between the effects in kde4 and the old-school method still used in Gnome (fusion-icon, emerald, compiz-config settings manager)?  In gnome i managed to get 99% of everthing working with my Nvidia card on this same pc, but KDE4 i am confused about how to set these options from the CCSM.  These options were essential on Gnome to get the effects tear-free and to get video output tear-free.
    2. Can I use the old method on KDE4?  The old method has 20X more effects to choose from.  Any drawbacks to that method?
    I won't hesitate to go back to Gnome if i can't get everything working, but it would be nice to use KDE again, as this release seems to be less buggy.
    Thanks!

    They are not the same. Although many of the effects are similar, the native effects are provided by kwin and do not require compiz at all. Hence you can't use ccsm to set these.
    2. Can I use the old method on KDE4?  The old method has 20X more effects to choose from.  Any drawbacks to that method?
    Yes you can. In systemsettings under standard applications there is also an option for you to set whether kde should use kwin or another installed window manager (such as compiz) as the standard window manager. You can also use fusion-icon.
    The drawbacks are that the integretation is not as smooth. You won't be able to get the same integrated miniature preview of launchers and open apps in the panel and the pager plasmoid doesn't recognise compiz workspaces. If your taskbar as sorted by desktops, that might also be problematic.

  • [SOLVED] Compiz-Fusion and mouse pointers

    Hello,
    I am having a bit of trouble using Gnome with Compiz-Fusion and trying to use the Vienna 3 Rapture mouse theme, or any non-default theme for that matter. Said theme worked fine for me in Fluxbox, but since I started using Gnome/Compiz it isn't working right.
    I have my TV as a dual monitor, and the Vienna pointer works fine on it. On my main monitor though I get the standard black cursor. I can change it to red or white glass, but I can't get Vienna or any other cursor to appear on the list of pointers to change too. My mouse does switch to Vienna in Google Earth, but that's the only app I've seen so far that it works in.
    Sometimes when I start X the Vienna cursor will appear for a moment before being overridden and sometimes it goes straight from the 'X' pointer to the default Gnome pointer. Perhaps on those occasions it just happens to fast for me to see.
    I found a tip on a forum (that I can't find now to link to unfortunately....) that mentioned adding 'xsetrroot -cursor_name something something' (sorry I can't remember the exact command) to ~/.xinitrc before gnome-session. That didn't help at all. One thing I wasn't sure of though is whether to actually type '-cursor_name' or whether I should type the name of my cursor. I know that sounds stupid but the tip on the forum said to type it EXACTLY as shown. Generally they make a note of saying 'use your real path instead' or something of the like.
    I have my mouse themes, several of them, not just this one, and all of which worked in Fluxbox, setting in ~/.icons but they don't show up in the list of cursors available. My Vienna cursor is still set apparently since it works on the TV, which is of course running Gnome/Compiz also.
    Does anyone have any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong here? Thanks for any advice.

    While I haven't figured this out yet, oddly enough after a restart (which I have done before) the cursor is 'kind of' working. It shows on the desktop and on the window borders, but not IN apps like Firefox or Pidgin.
    It does however still work in Oxine. So I'm at a loss as to what's wrong and why it suddenly started partially working. Any ideas any one?
    ***I also noticed that the cursor is working in the 'Appearance' window, as well as some other config windows like the one for avant window navigator. It works in 'calculator' on the buttons, but if I were to hover over the display then it reverts to the default cursor.

  • [SOLVED]Compiz-fusion wallpaper plugin!!!

    Hello!
         i'm a newbie in linux, i would like to have 4 different wallpapers on each side of the cube, i tried wallpapoz, but im not satisfied. Finally i figured out that there is a plugin in compiz fusion, named wallaper plugin what can do this trick for me, but because Nautilus does not natively support multiple wallpapers, a patch is required for this plugin to work correctly when using Nautilus. And here is the problem. I found these patches:
    http://www.russ.co.il/patch/02_compiz_background.patch
    http://www.russ.co.il/patch/30_rgba_colormap.patch
    But these patches are made for nautilus & eel ver. 2.20.0, and i have ver 2.24.2-1 so i removed my eel and nautilus and made these operations:
    tar -xvzf nautilus-2.20.0.tar.gz
    tar -xvzf eel-2.20.0.tar.gz
    mv 02_compiz_background.patch eel-2.20.0
    mv 30_rgba_colormap.patch nautilus-2.20.0
    cd eel-2.20.0
    patch -p1 <02_compiz_background.patch
    ./configure && make && make install
    cd ../nautilus-2.20.0
    patch -p1 <30_rgba_colormap.patch
    ./configure && make && make install
    but after make install i get an error message. I tried with higher versions of eel but without success.
    Somebody can help me, how to use compiz-fusion wallpaper plugin on my Arch/GNOME sistem?
    THX
    After make install eel i get this error:

  • [SOLVED]Ruby on Rails won't run with apache/passenger

    Hi I want to run Redmine, a Ruby on Rails application, on a personal server using MariaDB as the database and Apache with the Phusion Passenger module as the application platform. So far I am able to run Redmine with the default WeBrick server, but if I try to run it via Apache (http://192.168.1.5/redmine) I just get the directory index of  /usr/share/webapps/redmine. I've been running various php webapps using this apache installation without issues but my unfamiliarity with Ruby on Rails makes me unsure how to fix this. If I create a Ruby on Rails test  application as described at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ru … figuration I get the same issue.
    Using the arch wiki articles on Ruby on Rails and Redmine, This is basically how I installed things:
    $ yaourt -S ruby1.9 rubygems1.9 nodejs redmine
    # gem-1.9 install rails
    # gem-1.9 install passenger
    /opt/ruby-1-9/ and subfolders ended up having no read/exexute permissions for 'other', probably because of my umask settings, so I changed the permissions, also because apache runs as user/group 'apache'.
    Ran the script that installs the passenger apache module:
    # /opt/ruby1.9/bin/passenger-install-apache2-module
    added to httpd.conf:
    LoadModule passenger_module /opt/ruby1.9/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-4.0.5/libout/apache2/mod_passenger.so
    PassengerRoot /opt/ruby1.9/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-4.0.5
    PassengerDefaultRuby /opt/ruby1.9/bin/ruby
    ServerName arch-server
    DocumentRoot /usr/share/webapps
    <Directory "/usr/share/webapps">

    AllowOverride all
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
    # MultiViews must be turned off.
    Options -MultiViews
    </Directory>
    I checked if the passenger module is loaded, and judging from /var/log/httpd/error_log that seems the case:
    [ 2013-07-03 22:52:22.8947 28902/b7407700 agents/Watchdog/Main.cpp:440 ]: Options: { 'analytics_log_user' => 'nobody', 'default_group' => 'nobody', 'default_python' => 'python', 'default_ruby' => '/opt/ruby1.9/bin/ruby', 'default_user' => 'nobody', 'log_level' => '0', 'max_instances_per_app' => '0', 'max_pool_size' => '6', 'passenger_root' => '/opt/ruby1.9/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-4.0.5', 'pool_idle_time' => '300', 'temp_dir' => '/tmp', 'union_station_gateway_address' => 'gateway.unionstationapp.com', 'union_station_gateway_port' => '443', 'user_switching' => 'true', 'web_server_pid' => '28901', 'web_server_type' => 'apache', 'web_server_worker_gid' => '1001', 'web_server_worker_uid' => '1006' }

    'apachectl configtest' gives 'Syntax OK'.
    I followed the wiki on redmine (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Redmine), chose to use "bundle install" to install the required gems with only a 'production' environment. What worried me is that those gems are now in /root/.gems while the webserver runs as user 'apache'.
    I can run Redmine at 192.168.1.5:3000 without errors using:
    # ruby script/rails server webrick -e production
    But if I kill it and try via apache http://192.168.1.5/redmine I get a directory content listing.

    Thanks markocz, my use of sub-url was indeed the problem. With help from the linked article I did the following:
    # mkdir /usr/share/webapps/phusion-passenger/
    # ln -s /usr/share/webapps/redmine/public /usr/share/webapps/phusion-passenger/redmine
    # chown -R root:http /usr/share/webapps/
    # chmod -R g+rx /usr/share/webapps/
    httpd.conf now looks like this:
    LoadModule passenger_module /opt/ruby1.9/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-4.0.5/libout/apache2/mod_passenger.so
    PassengerRoot /opt/ruby1.9/lib/ruby/gems/1.9.1/gems/passenger-4.0.5
    PassengerDefaultRuby /opt/ruby1.9/bin/ruby
    ServerName arch-server
    DocumentRoot /usr/share/webapps/phusion-passenger
    <Directory "/usr/share/webapps/phusion-passenger">
    # This relaxes Apache security settings.
    AllowOverride all
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
    # MultiViews must be turned off.
    Options +FollowSymLinks
    </Directory>
    RailsBaseURI /redmine
    <Directory "/usr/share/webapps/phusion-passenger/redmine">
    Options -MultiViews
    </Directory>
    Redmine now works via passenger.

    You can't run iPad/iPhone apps on any Mac - it's a completely different operating system and you have to use applications designed for it. There is no equivalent app in the App Store which is available in your Applications folder, which is one way of obtaining Mac applications.

    I know this is not a new issue but... let's try again.
    The title is pretty much the situation. I reinstalled the whole system recently and installed Catalyst which worked good except for a delay on maximizing/resizing windows. Yesterday I saw the new about Catalyst going to AUR and all that stuff so I decided to switch to open source drivers. They work pretty good but the wiki-way to start compiz without fusion-icon which used to work with catalyst does not work anymore.

    It should be:
    Exec=compiz --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp --indirect-rendering
    Edit:
    If you still have problems after that you need to export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1, which is what fusion-icon is doing.

    Any idea what this 'compiz-fusion/compiz' is?

    Downloaded latest update 7-27 and all I can say is it is the most pitiful piece of feces I have ever seen. Letters are blue with black background and you can't read **** because of the contrast . What was wrong with the white letters and black background, nothing except some idiot has to justify his miserable existence by making changes on a system that was just fine. Contacts are another issue now that it takes anywhere from 3 to 5 steps to get there. Unlocking the phone is another one , why should I have to unlock it just to have another screen to ask me where to go. I have been on the phone with Verizon as well as going to the store for help in deciphering this new pitiful update. The answers from the help at the stores is to email Google or Verizon about these issues .I purchased the original droid in dec. of 2009 and was happy with it. then upgraded to the razr jan 2012 and have been pleased with it till this latest update and now If I could get anything else  I would, another thing is I would NOT recommend the droid to anyone for purchase.I have even tought about getting the iphone at this point because I am so dissatisfied . when I decided to post this I tried the user name of irked , it was taken as well as ******, so apparently I'm not the only disgusted user.

  • [SOLVED] Want to use gnome decorate in Compiz-Fusion

    Hello,
    I am a convert from Ubuntu. I have succesfully installed Compiz Fusion. However, I don't like the Emerald theme manager. I would like to use the gtk decorator instead. How is that possible ? I am currently running Compiz by start the Fusion-icon
    Thanks

    There is a package in the community repository that provides this functionality.  I think it's called compiz-decorator-gtk.
    And welcome to arch!

  • Fusion-icon error: glxinfo not installed. [SOLVED]

    Hi,  I am running gnome at the moment and I am trying to get compiz and emerald started.  I type into the terminal:
    [semperfiguy: ~]$ fusion-icon
    * Detected Session: gnome
    * execution of "which glxinfo" failed
    * Error: glxinfo not installed!
    And I get that error.  Now when I run glxinfo from the it spits out a whole bunch of stuff.  So it is obviously installed correct?  So why is it giving me this problem?

    This is what I get:
    [semperfiguy: ~]$ which glxinfo
    bash: which: command not found
    Installed "which" and it works fine.. thank you!

  • 5800: apps missing / won't run / "key icon" overla...

    A few apps went missing on my 5800, also under Application manager. They're on the SD, and I think all Java. Some apps also started showing a small key icon overlayed at the corner of each app's icon. These apps can't be run.
    A restart didn't help, nor a restart without the card and a live reinsertion. After another restart the key icon overlays disappeared but these apps still won't run. They could only be reinstalled after an uninstall, but those that disappeared are stuck in limbo.
    Besides the above, one app that was preloaded on the card now has an empty icon, and after two restarts its name shows as a 9 digit number (see below). It can't be run.
    All of this on firmware v31. As far as I can tell I didn't do anything to trigger it.
    Are there any non-destructive ways to fix it?
    Is there a way to use Symbian without all these strange problems popping up all the time (with the usual solution seemingly being total reset/format)?

    ur symptoms lead to a diagnosis of corrupt memory card.. Have u installed any of those java programs from free game sites tht, while installin, says ur phone could be harmed? Coz those java games r a bit unstable on nokia5800.. I knw it shouldn't be.. But... It is.. Sometimes there's a read/write error and then they show key icons..
    Whatever to solve this, do this..
    Connect with computer
    When asked choose mass storage mode
    Open my computer
    U'l find ur memory card listed
    Right click, goto properties
    There's an option for check disc for errors
    Select tht and let it scan and fix errors
    After u r done, see if u can uninstall those in limbo.
    If not connect again in mass storage mode
    Go to ur computer settings and as to show hidden files, and also show important windows files
    Open ur memory card
    U'l find a FOUND.000 folder.. Delete it
    It's unusable by symbian os and it takes on space
    Restore ur hidden file settings to normal.
    Hope this helps..

    Dr. Shoubhik

  • Fusion-icons error(solved)

    After I install compiz-fusion and compiz-fusion-extra, I run the command fusion-icons
    But I get wrong answer, the information is below:
    compiz (dbus) - Error: dbus_bus_get error: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
    compiz (core) - Error: Couldn't activate plugin 'dbus'
    Do I really miss something like "dbus"?
    Someone helps me
    Thanks()

    It seems not the dbus's problem, it's the panel's problem.
    After the fusion-icon starts, the panel doesn't show the funsion-icon's icon on the panel, so I just make a wrong impression that the fusion-icon does not start.
    Now I use xfce4, it seems OK.
    Thanks All of U
