["solved"]Compiz refuses to work.

Hello,
I'm trying to get some effects going on in my DE, using Xfce4.
I've followed the instructions on the Wiki page, using the compiz-fusion-gtk group to install the packages and furthermore I ran ccsm to enable Window Decoration and Move/Resize Windows.
When I type emerald --replace however, nothing happens; even though I did install Emerald. When running fusion-icon Compiz starts running, but I do not have window decorations nor can I resize/move windows. What's going on here and how can I fix this?
A piece of info that you might need is that I'm using an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5470 video card and that I'm using the xf86-video-ati drivers. (The Xfce4 compositor works and I've used Cairo-compmgr + xcompmgr too)
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Here are some errors when running compiz --replace:
[jente@Lappy ~]$ compiz --replace
compiz (core) - Error: Could not acquire compositing manager selection on screen 0 display ":0.0"
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

  • [SOLVED] Compiz emerald not working

    Hi , I recently reinstalled Arch, previously compiz with emerald was working fine under Mate desktop.
    Now I can't get them to work properly.
    If i run:
    emerald --replace
    nothing happens
    If i run:
    compiz --replace &
    I lose the window borders and can't move the windows.
    In my ccsm I have enabled move windows, window decoration
    and in window decoration i have in command emerald --replace
    the packages i have installed :
    compiz-bcop 0.8.8-2
    compiz-core 0.8.9-3
    compiz-fusion-plugins-extra 0.8.8-2
    compiz-fusion-plugins-main 0.8.8-3
    compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported 0.8.8-1
    compizconfig-python 0.8.4-5
    emerald 0.8.8-2
    emerald-themes 0.6.0-4
    as compiz-core is not working if i try to install compiz-core-mate i get:
    compiz-core-mate and compiz-core are in conflict.
    if i remove compiz-core and everything that depends on compiz-core (compiz plugins, emerald, ccsm) and install compiz-core-mate then i can't install ccsm , compiz plugins nor emeral as all of them requiere compiz-core.
    at the end in one way or another I can't get compiz and emerald working. any help would be appreciated
    ps. i also tried compiz-gtk-standalone with the same problem that the other packages needed compiz-core  and had a compatibility problem.

    In the OP you were using compiz 0.8x and that version is very out of date. I can't comment on compiz-mate, but the easiest and the semi-official way to run compiz on Arch is with the compiz-bzr (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/compiz-bzr/) package in the AUR. If you want emerald with it, then install emerald-git (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/emerald-git/).
    Those should be the only two packages you install. compiz-bzr and (optionally) emerald-git. No fusion-icon or compiz-fusion-plugins or anything like that. Fusion icon is dead and all the plugins and everything else you need is bundled into compiz.
    Now there has been a bit a trouble with compiz lately and the gtk-window-decorator. You need to downgrade your version of metacity to 3.12.0 (found here: http://seblu.net/a/arm/2014/08/05/commu … kg.tar.xz). I stumbled across this thread because of the problem you're having with ccsm and the error "ImportError: libprotobuf.so.8." In the compiz spinoff package called compiz-manjaro (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/compiz-manjaro/) I found the comment "FYI: Recent update to protobuf package means this package needs to be rebuilt to get CCSM working again." So I rebuilt compiz-bzr and now ccsm is working for me again. That last part doesn't apply to you because you're installing compiz-bzr for the first time, but it might help someone else who finds this thread like I did.
    As for your problem where you say "if i run compiz --replace i can't move the windows and i get no window borders." If you hold Alt, can you click and drag the windows around? Not having window borders is a common issue because the window border plugin isn't enabled. You can read more about that here - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … nt_plugins
    EDIT:
    There's the package compiz (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/compiz/) which you can use instead of compiz-bzr. It's the release version instead of the development version. The release version apparently requires metacity2 (which you can find in the AUR), so if you pick this package then ignore my earlier comments about downgrade metacity.

  • [SOLVED] Compiz config not working

    It seems my Compiz suddenly stopped reading it's config files.
    When running CompizConfig everything is set up fine, the decorations, moving, resizing, my commands etc, but when I do 'compiz --replace' compiz starts with no plugins.
    I looked into my ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig and I found two files:
    ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig/config
    [general]
    profile =
    integration = true
    ~/.config/compiz/compizconfig/Default.ini
    This one seems to store everything I set up in compizconfig.

    Ok, self-solved. I must append ccp to the compiz command for it to take config files into consideration:
    compiz --replace ccp

  • [SOLVED] Cups refuses to work: "bad file descriptor"

    I am not getting CUPS to work on a new installation.
    I need to use cups as a client printing to a printer attached to a separate server. What I did:
    1. I installed  the cups package and started/enabled the service in systemd.
    2. The remote server has a working CUPS installation (accessible and working from other computers)
    3. I can see the remote printer listed among the printers in CUPS's local  web interface
    However, every job sent to the printer (from the GUI: KDE based apps such as Okular, etcetera) silently fails.
    No job is ever listed on the CUPS web interface.
    If I try to check on CUPS status with lstat I get the following error:
    $> lpstat
    lpstat: bad file descriptor
    Any suggestion on how to fix the problem?
    Edit: more info
    It seems that cups is running fine according to systemd:
    [stefano@gorgias ~]$ systemctl status cups
    ● cups.service - CUPS Printing Service
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/cups.service; enabled)
    Active: active (running) since Mon 2014-08-04 17:56:32 CDT; 16h ago
    Main PID: 2832 (cupsd)
    Status: "Scheduler is running..."
    CGroup: /system.slice/cups.service
    └─2832 /usr/bin/cupsd -f
    Aug 04 17:56:32 gorgias systemd[1]: Started CUPS Printing Service.
    but not so according to CUPS itself:
    [stefano@gorgias ~]$ lpstat -t
    scheduler is not running
    no system default destination
    lpstat: Bad file descriptor
    lpstat: Bad file descriptor
    lpstat: Bad file descriptor
    lpstat: Bad file descriptor
    lpstat: Bad file descriptor
    So systemd tells me the scheduler is running, while CUPS claims it is not

    Stefano,
    I can't thank you enough for posting your solution! I have spent the last several days trying to get libreoffice and evince to even see my printer. I've been up and down so many cups web interface sessions, I lost count long ago. Finally, I came across some commands I'd never seen before, in particular 'lpstat' which also gave me the 'bad file descriptor' message. Googling provided next to nothing in help, but it did produce a link to your post, which is like finding a needle in a haystack! Anyway, I updated /etc/cups/client.conf as you suggested, and now my applications can finally see my Brother HL-2280DW.
    For what it's worth, I'm running a fresh archlinux install (as of a week or two ago), and just installed cups a few days ago:
    root<t1>@benito:/etc/cups# uname -a
    Linux benito 3.16.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Aug 14 07:40:19 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    root<t1>@benito:/etc/cups# pacman -Qs cups
    local/brother-hl2280dw 2.0.4_2-3
        Brother HL-2280DW CUPS Driver
    local/cups 1.7.5-1
        The CUPS Printing System - daemon package
    local/cups-filters 1.0.57-1
        OpenPrinting CUPS Filters
    local/cups-pdf 2.6.1-2
        PDF printer for cups
    local/libcups 1.7.5-1
        The CUPS Printing System - client libraries and headers
    local/python2-pycups 1.9.66-2
        Python CUPS Bindings
    local/system-config-printer 1.4.4-1
        A CUPS printer configuration tool and status applet
    Again, my sincere thanks!!
    (BTW, I'd also like to know why /etc/cups/client.conf doesn't work as advertised...)

    I'll just address the backup issue, iCloud is NOT a backup system, you still need one.

When I attempt to use Adobe Update Manager I get the same messages as above. You will see that my products are properly licensed and up to date. Have you any solution?

  • Thread refuses to work

    Ok, this is the weirdest thing ever happened to me ever since i started working with cellphone programming.
    Lately, one of my thread refuses to activate. I have this thread that communicates with a thermal printer to print something right. Well, i have been working developing the interpretative code for it (since the SDK won't do any good for my needs) for about 4 weeks and been working perfectly. But then i tried to implement it on my application i was working on and it refused to work. Well, i though something was wrong with my code so i went back to my test program and tried to invoke de print thread and now it also refuses to work, but i noticed on the device log (i'm developing on blackberry) a IllegalMonitorStateException was thrown in the wait() method of my thread.
    My thread is running all the time expecting for me to call it to work so it has this structure
    class printThread implements Thread
        private boolean sleep = true;
        printThread(){} // Constructor
        public void run()
             while(sleep)
                 try
                     wait();
                 catch(InterruptedException e){}
                 if(sleep)
                    // Do the work when notifyed
        public void work()
             notify();
    }Thats my basic thread structure, and been working like a charm for ages already (my application has 4 thread running backward, one of it works every 5 minutes in the background) but then i added the print thread and this problem started to appear. then i went back to my test program for the printer and the problem followed me there.
    What might this be causing the problem? I could understand this problem happening in my application with the other 4 threads working there, but on the test program there's only 1 thread!!!

    hm it looks like you lost synchronized keyword while making changes in the code.
    IllegalMonitorStateException is definitely a WYSIWYC (What You See Is What You Coded). I mean, this exception is indeed the correct behavior for the code you posted.
    Consider changing *while(sleep){...}* to something like *synchronized(this){while(sleep){...}}* - that will probably make exception go away, but...
    ... on the test program there's only 1 thread!!!...but given above, after fixing the exception you can get into the next problem - your application will hang.
    You know, it takes two to tango. While one thread waits, there should be another one to notify.
    If there's only one thread waiting, it can wait forever. I won't guarantee that this is your case though because from your explanation it is not clear if there's indeed only one thread.
    I would also recommend you to consider studying Sun's [online tutorial on concurrency|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/concurrency/]. +"...This lesson introduces the platform's basic concurrency support..."+ - studying it can help fix problems faster than waiting for the answer at the forum. :)

  • Volume adjust refuses to work unless FN is pressed

    I didn't start having this problem until a week or so ago. My volume refuses to work unless FN is pressed while f9 or f10 is as well. That or I have to open the function key app and then it will work without the key.
    I have windows 8 and my model is the satellite s855-s5378

    Try checking the UEFI settings for a function key mode setting. Most models have a toggle that allows you to choose wheter you want to have to hold down the FN key to access the "special" keys or hold down the FN key to access the F# keys. Try switching it.

  • Curve 9300 Browser refuses to work?!

    Hi guys!
    Yet another fault with my BlackBerry 9300, the browser refuses to work, I have full 3G coverage and I am connected to my home wifi with an excellent connection, yet my Blackberry just refuses to connect to any websites, all I get is a message saying Unable to connect to server, have had the problem for a few days, tried the usual battery pull, turned of my network coverage and tried running off my wifi and vice versa yet ive had no luck...
    Would be so grateful if someone had a solution, cos i really dont have the time or the energy to contact my network provider..
    Thanks

    Hi there!
    I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
    1) Register HRT
    KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
    2) Delete and Resend Service Books
    KB05000Delete the service book for the BlackBerry Internet Service email account from the BlackBerry smartphone
    KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
    3) Batt Pull Reboot
    Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
    Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should contact your wireless service provider for formal support.
    Good luck!

  • Messges often refuses to work

    I seem to have this problen all too often as Messages refuses to work. I am trying to send a message to a iOS user and it does not work and I get the red Exlamation point. I have attempted to reboot the Mac, log in and out of iMessage but it does not fix the problem. Perhaps this is a system wide issue on Apples end.

    Hi John,
    I had the iMessages arrive on my iPhone early this morning.   (Thanks Apple).
    The Mac appeared to sync this evening (my time) at 21.08.
    However I have not go the "Are you reading this" that may have been the prompt for the sync.
    As you can see I have yesterday's AIM chat still "open".
    I have not reported it.
    The Status page Apple run says there have been no issues
    http://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/
    We are currently on British Summer Time which is GMT+ 1 hour if this helps explain what happend at 4.41 BST for me or the sync time this evening.

    I think you should try installing the software from the website:
    iTunes - http://www.apple.com/itunes/download
    iPod Updater - http://www.apple.com/ipod/download
    Try downloading/installing both of those.
    Also, the website for a repair would be: http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod but I wouldn't recommend going there for a replacement unless you know that there is a problem with the iPod, but it seems like an issue with the computer itself (or there software on the computer).
    You could also, if my two websites didn't help you, try phoning the Apple tech support - 1-800-275-2273

  • Embed fonts in folio?

    From the information on Indesign CS6, it sounded like you would be able to embed fonts in a folio to make text selectable and to reduce file size, but I am not sure how to accomplish this and I'm not finding any information online on how to do this.
