[SOLVED] Connecting extra Monitor, laptop screen goes black.

Whenever i connect a additional monitor through HDMI (my only output), the laptop screen goes black. If i do FN + external_monitor switch, then the laptop screen turns on but the external monitor turns off.
If you move the mouse you can feel that the desktop has been extended as i wanted, it is just that one of the screens keeps going black. The gnome display settings show both screens as active, the menu is so minimalistic that there is not much to do.

As a side note, the custom kernel is almost identical to the original archlinux one, just that USB 3.0 module is disabled.

The problem is now fixed,
For some weird reason, this time the gnome settings did work. Must have been some sort of rare bug that now i cannot reproduce.

  • Laptop screen goes black when HDMI connected to TV

I have a Thinkpad Edge 431. I've set it up in Control Panel to duplicate both the laptop and the external monitor when connected by HDMI. It works fine.
When I connect it to my TV, the laptop screen black. The TV displays "No Signal" until the HDMI connection is made. When the laptop screen goes black, so does the TV screen. No sound or picture.
This was working fine until recently, and I can't figure out if I somehow changed settings to make this happen. It's clear that to me that the HDMI port on the laptop works, as does the cable.
The TV port works (I've switched the connection on the cable box to each HDMI port on the TV, to make sure they work).
I can't change anything in Control Panel when I connect the HDMI, because the screen is black.
    I've updated the Lenovo system.
The other relevant piece of info: the Intel Graphics Card control panel says that Monitor/TV Settings are not supported (although until recently, I could easily display the computer on the TV).
Can anyone help with this? Thanks!

No video and audio signals to the tv connected

  • Narcoleptic laptop - screen goes black while working

    Hi ho,
About a week ago my mac started acting strange. I'll be working and the screen will just go black. (it just did it again! Sometimes if I'm listening to music on my mac, the music will stop, so it's not just the screen going black, it's like the computer goes to sleep out of the blue.
I was trying out bittorent for the first time and I'm wondering it it's related to that, if there is something I don't know coming on to my computer from the internet, please advise. I took bittorent off and it'll still appear. A window from Opera will open, so I took Opera off my computer in case there is something downloading. I never use Opera, so I don't know why it keeps coming up.
When it goes black, sometimes if I click the power button, I'll hear the disk repower up and the screen will go on, but it isn't all the time. Once I get it started again, it may be a few minutes and it'ss do it again without warning, or it could be 10 seconds. There's no rhyme or reason.
Another thing I notice is that the laptop will get hot, and I'm wondering if it's an emergency mechanism if the computer is getting too hot.
Please help, of course, I'm dead without being able to use my computer! And this is totally messing with my productivity!

Hi, madamep. A properly-functioning Powerbook should put itself to sleep (not shut down entirely) before it gets hot enough to do real damage to itself. That may be what's happening with yours, as you say it seems to be getting pretty hot.
I suggest opening Activity Monitor and seeing whether something is using a lot of CPU cycles a lot of the time, thus generating extra heat. If you find that something is, and it's something you recognize and can comfortably turn off, do so. Then see whether the unexpected-sleep problem diminishes or disappears. If there's nothing drawing heavily on your processor, are you using the Powerbook on a soft surface (bed, sofa, lap, etc.) that's inhibiting airflow around the PB's shell and through its cooling vents? If so, don't: it needs unobstructed airflow all around it, including underneath — that's why it has little rubber feet, to keep it elevated slightly above your table- or desktop. Always use it on a hard, flat surface, and if the feet have come off it, replace them with something that will provide airspace under the PB at all times. Also check to make sure the vents haven't become clogged with dust or fuzz: use canned compressed air or a household vacuum cleaner (not the brush attachment — that can generate a lot of static electricity that's dangerous to electronics) to clean the vents from the outside.

  • My laptop screen goes black when i plug in an Hdmi cord

Initially I had both my tv and computer off. I connected the dvi to the tv and the hdmi to the laptop and turned them both on. I had no issue using my laptop as i tried to sync the computer to the TV. However i must have accidentally hit something in the graphics options as my laptop screen went black. I unplugged the hdmi cord from my laptop and the screen came back up. But now for some reason everytime i plug in the hdmi cord to the laptop the screen goes black. When i take it out it the screen comes back up. Did i change something that is causing this to happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have pretty much the same exact problem and setup as DaveA1.  I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop C55T-A5123 which I just purchased a few months ago and when I connect my laptop to my SONY TV via the HDMI cable the screen on my laptop goes black and the TV says no signal.  It was working just fine up until about a week ago when I was watching a movie through my VLC player and then the screen flickered a couple times then video went completely out and I've never been able to get it to come back even once.
Here's the specs on my laptop:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114907
So far I have tried on two different TVs, swapped HDMI cables which work on my other HDMI devices, system restore and attempted to update various different drivers.  I am curious to find out if Dave was able to find a solution to his problem.

  • My Macbook pro 1,2 monitor and laptop screen goes black once in a while and then comes back on

    Hello all,
Thank you very much for taking the time to view my issue. This issue just started about a month ago, I have a 22" LCD Monitor that I have been using, when this issue started the monitor would flicker and the screen would go black, but if I turned it off for a bit then turned it back on it would come back on. After a while it just started to go black and not come back on at all, so I decided to disconnect the monitor and use the notebook screen, I thought the monitor itself was broken. The notebook screen was working fine up until the last week, it is now doing the exact same thing, when my computer wakes up from being asleep it sometimes flickers then goes black, I can still faintly see the outline of the programs I have up but it is completely black. Sometimes it is a pain to get back on and I have to force shutdown and turn it back on to get it working. I am not sure what the problem is but I really want to get it fixed.
My Macbook Pro 1,2 is the first model made, but it was the best model available at the time. It has a Intel Core Duo 2.16GHz chip with 2GB of ram and a 160GB hard drive, it also has an ATI Radeon X1600 video card with 256mb of Vram. If anyone has any suggestions or resources I can use, I would greatly appreciate you sharing them with me.
Thank you very much in advance!
    Sincerely,
    Saggz.

    Hi,
    Is your notebook under warranty?
    Try the following.
Follow the procedure on the link below to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and follow the steps in Part 3 to 'Try it' to see if this OS will run from the CD without the need to install on your HDD.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
If this does run ( it will be slow ), it probably means your Hard Drive has failed and will need to be replaced.

  • Imac 27" Intel Core 7 CPU. Screen goes black and will not respond except with a push of power button. Second monitor connected via displayport continues to display fine. Apply Store did full hardware scan and all is fine. Did clean wipe from Mavrick back

Imac 27" Intel Core7  CPU 16 Gig RAM. Screen goes black and will not respond except with a push of power button. Second monitor connected via displayport continues to display fine. Apply Store did full hardware diagnostic and all is fine. Did clean wipe from Mavrick back to Mountain Lion but problem remains. Apple Store can do no more.

I did some more digging, it appears to be a backlight problem only. I can see the screen very dimly if I use a bright flashlight in a very dark room. It also seems to run ok if the brightness is turned down a LOT.
So I'm thinking this is a LED driver board issue or the display itself. I'll open it up and check the connection between the two and see if I can get any more clues. At least I can use it somewhat now by dimming the display significantly...

  • [Solved] Screen goes black when I run "xrandr" with displayport connec

I am running Arch on a Dell Latitude E6500 with Xorg, nouveau, and Gnome 3. The graphics chipset is identified by lspci as "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G98M [Quadro NVS 160M] (rev a1)".  So far, everything has gone swimmingly with the integrated monitor. Today, I tried to connect an external monitor via DisplayPort. I initially connected the monitor with the system booted and logged in graphically. The external monitor did not receive a signal, so I ran xrandr in an xterm to see if it was being detected. As soon as I ran the command, the laptop screen went black. On a reboot (this time with the DisplayPort cable plugged in from the start), the boot process stopped at the end of the systemd messages (ie, the boot was successful, but X did not appear to start). Connecting to the system via ssh from another machine, I set DISPLAY=:0 and ran xrandr:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 8192 x 8192
    LVDS-1 connected primary 1280x800+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 331mm x 207mm

    720x400 59.55
    640x400 59.95

    640x480 75.00 60.00
    720x400 70.08
DP-2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
So, X does appear to be running, but isn't actually rendering to either monitor. I noted that there is no "*" next to a graphics mode for DP-1, which I took to mean that no mode was selected.
I then ran "xrandr --output DP-1 --auto" in an attempt to wake up the monitor. This had no effect on either monitor (I still had the boot messages on the integrated monitor, and a blank screen on the external), but running xrandr again showed that the default 1920x1200 mode was selected:
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3200 x 1200, maximum 8192 x 8192

Googling has turned up a number of people having issues with DisplayPort, but in these cases the external monitor simply needs to be enabled (xrandr --auto, a BIOS setting, etc). Has anyone experienced this situation, where the working primary monitor stops working?
    Thanks!

I got a displayport -> HDMI cable to try the laptop with my television. This worked seamlessly, with X auto-detecting the new monitor and correctly enabling it with a default of 1920x1080 (interlaced). I also was able to change it to 1280x720 (progressive) with xrandr. Since the monitor I originally tried with straight displayport also has an HDMI input, I tried the new cable there and again was met with success. I'll mark this as solved with the likely culprit being something very strange with my displayport cable (I had ruled the cable out since the EDID was properly reporting the monitor model and supported resolutions).

  • Laptop screen goes completely black but shows that it's still on

Hello everyone, i'm in need of serious help!
I bought this laptop over 2 years ago (October of 2008 to be somewhat exact). It's a Windows Vista Home Premium, with service pack 2.
its an HP pavilion dv7 notebook pc
processor: AMD Turion (tm) X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-70  2.00 GHz
    Ram: 4GB
    system type: 64-bit operating system
im assuming the video card information are as follow:
name: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
chip type: ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics (0x9612)
    DAC type: Internal DAC (400MHz)
    total memory: 1914MB
    memory: 3836MB RAM
page file: 2163MB used, 5732MB available
    current display is 1440 x 900 (32 bit)(60Hz)
    directx version: directx 11
with that being said... here's my dilemma...
Each time i play the video game, "World of warcraft", my laptop's screen goes completely black but it shows as if though it is still on. I can't see the screen but it shows that it is still on by the little lights on the bottom of the screen.
I took my laptop to a family friend who knows a lot about computers to see if they can fix it for me. They told me that everything was running fine, everything is okay, the ram, memory, graphic card, everything passed the test, and it was not over heating... there was nothing wrong with my laptop. They THOUGHT it could be the motherboard, so they tried it, but in the end, it wasn't. Unfortunately the problem was not solved.
I played World of warcraft on this laptop before. When i first bought it. It ran smoothly and gave me no problem whatsoever. I'm clueless is to though why it's giving me problems NOW.
Could anyone please please pleaseeeee help me? i have given up already. I have done everything i could. Please help me! i believe i have done a total one 1 or 2 system restore to factory settings, the 2nd one was recently (probably a month ago) and i'm not sure if maybe perhaps i needed to DL something else? i have DL all the updates that microsoft offered to me when needed and when it was necessary, but this particularly problem was never fixed.
someone please help me! Thank you so much!

    erichon99,
I think i may have found MY solution but i have yet to test it out... No one helped me. No one at all. I took my PC to a family friend company and they did everything for me: ran tests to see if my laptop is up to date with everything, removed graphic card and put a better one and nothing still. They thought it was my mother board but they ran tests again and everything on my laptop past the test. My graphic card was fine, ram was perfect, memory was perfect, everything everything on my laptop was perfect. They couldn't find out what was the problem. I took it to best buy and not even them could help me. When i was about to give up, my fiance, he did some research and found this guy on youtube who does LIVE recordings and answers people's questions. My fiance asked the question and he got serveral responses. Out of 10, i would say about 2 or 3 of them mentioned, "it's the power cord" the rest said it might be virus, or a card is not working properly, etc. You can give it a shot (buying a new power cord) those who told my fiance that it could be my power cord, said to get those power cord that has a fan in them.
I think this makes sense because my screen goes black only when i'm playing a game. even when i play cityville on facebook it goes that black screen, but it doesn't go black, it does that pixelated, rainbow, warning bar, thingy (i hope you know what i mean lol) and when i touch my power cord to my laptop it is BURNING hot. What i do is, when my battery is fully charge, i disconnect and play my game, and to not lose any docs i left open, i close my games, and plug back in. I've been lazy to find another power cord lol i guess i should start now, huh? lol
i hope this help. I would say (if you've done everything like how i did) buy a power cord that matches your laptop, but with a FAN in it (i was told it's the best and you'll never have that problem of freezing or whatever)

  • Laptop is moved....screen goes black

I upgraded to snow leopard a couple of months ago and a couple of weeks ago I started having this problem: sometimes (and it seems to be happening more and more) when I move my laptop ( the screen goes black (sounds like it goes into sleep mode) but I can't get it back and will have to shut it down and restart. This happens when its running on the battery or plugged in. Any ideas?

    Try a SMC reset.

  • PB screen goes black when TV is plugged in

I occasionally plug my PB G4 12" into the TV using the Video Adapter. This used to work fine - the desktop would span both TV and PB screen, just as it does when I have my external monitor plugged in.
But when I upgraded to Leopard this stopped working - when I plug the TV in, the PB screen goes black 90% of the time. And when I unplug the TV the PB screen stays black - I always have to shut the laptop down while the TV is plugged in and start it up once the TV is unplugged. But the PB still works fine when I plug an external monitor in.
Any ideas how to make this work again? Thanks.

    Hi MrEleffe,
    Welcome to the support community!
To fix any possible software issue that may be causing this to happen, please try to first back up all your data using the BlackBerry® Desktop Software and then perform a clean reload of your BlackBerry® Device Software. For further steps, please see the following KB articles.
    For Windows®:
"How to back up BlackBerry smartphone data using BlackBerry Desktop Software for Windows" KB12487
"How to perform a clean reload of the BlackBerry Device Software for Windows" KB11320
    For Mac:
"Back up and restore BlackBerry smartphone data on a Mac computer using BlackBerry Desktop Software" KB18776
"Perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software on a Mac computer" KB19915
Please test to make sure the issue has been resolved before restoring your backup file.
If that doesn't help, then the issue may be hardware related. In that case I recommend contacting your mobile network provider again for other options.
Please let me know how you make out with that.

My computer screen goes black after putting password.  I already unplugged the cord and battery and held power button for 1 minute several times and still has the black screen

Hello and welcome to the HP support forums.  Lets see what we can do to help you with your black screen issue.
When posting here if at all possible please provide your key system .
You have your model and what version of Windows.  If possible could you post back with the product number and which version of windows 7.  Home, professional, Ultimate.  and any service packs that have been installed.
Now here is a link that should help you out in finding what the problem may be and possible ways to solve the issue.

Things you may want to try as well. When you start your computer move the angle of the screen and see if it still has the problem.  If the problem goes away you are looking at a cable or connection issue.
If the problem stays the same then you may be looking at a driver or motherboard issue.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro crash - screen goes black

There is a major problem with the mid 2010 Mac Book Pro's and Lion.  I suspect that it is related to the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB video card and perhaps the i7 processor.  The crashes are random and most often occur after a mouse click then the screen suddenly goes black and a restart is forced.  There is a thread on MacRumors that describes many others with the same problem: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1182104
The crash occurs less frequently when the power and external monitors are connected.  When the MBP is unteathered it crashes every 20 minutes.  I am really surprised and disappointed that a bug this severe made it through final testing. Looking forward to 10.7.1.
    Scott

im so glad im not the only one with this problem. at least i know its not because some careless things i unconciously did that makes my mac gone berzerg like this.
i also encounter the exact same problem with all of you. problems started a month ago. at first it was just once in a while then it became a frequent thing especially when my battery left with 20-30%. then after i plugged in the magsafe, its okay. lately, nothing safes the mac from crashing, particularly when im running adobe and/or autocad. i thought it was software problems so i backed up my files, performed erase and install snow leopard then made an even bigger mistake by upgrading to lion. after finish upgrading, the crashings got even more often. every starting up, after i got a glimpse of login in, pufffttt, screen goes black but keyboard still on. googled it up and say reseting smc will do the trick. eeekkkk nothing! then resetting the pram. worked okay for quite some times then puufffttt, crash! ask a question on yahoo answers and got a help from lovely person to install gfsxcard-something and told to opt for integrated only. worked fine for 2 days and still went back to crashing. opened up the mac, testing each rams, reshuffling em, still got nothing. the only thing that enables me to do my work with this Majestic mac is resetting pram everytime i turn it on.
since im living in singapore (bought this mac june'09 in melbourne, australia), there is no genius bar to be found, running a diagnostic only at any apple service cost me 120 bucks and if i have to change the logicboard, its gonna cost me ard 1000++ dollas since i dont have any applecare and my warranty expired 4mnths ago. so, i might be killing myself soon! yauuzaaaa

  • Screen goes black randomly

    Hi everyone.
I have a very strange issue on 2 different PCs.
From time to time the screen goes completly black, and I have to wait about 2-3 seconds for it to restore the picture.
Both have NVIDIA video card, one PC has GF8900GT the second GF7200.
    Both PCs running GNOME
In both PCs the screen is connected via DVI port.
One PC has Arch installed for about 4 months the second has a 3 days old installation.
I also have a laptop with Arch (about 4 months) but I didn't expirience any issues there.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but it really annoys me.
I'll be very gratefull if someone points me in the right direction.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Screen goes black for 3 seconds in premiere CS5 every time I click

This is the first time I run Premiere CS5... On a fresh system install.
I suspect it's not playing well with my video card, a Radeon HD 4870 with 1GB Ram... Very standard stuff.  I am running window 7 64 bit with 12 gb RAM, a week old build. I have all the updates and latest drivers, sigh. After Effects CS5 runs fine, Maya 2010 runs fine, Quicktime runs fine... What gives.
Here's what happens: I only need to launch Premiere, right away I get the problem. The screen goes black 3 seconds before the prompt to create a new project. Once I create the project, the application workspace comes in, but if I click any menu, drag a tool window (whatever they are called), the screen goes black 3 seconds then comes back. Its basically impossible to work...Huge drag.
    Update:
The problem stopped after I went into the 'device settings' in preferences and set the device to 'none'....When I clicked on the device settings panel, my monitor went black, and there was a 'no signal' warning that came up, as if the DVI-D  signal was dead. I was able to restore the signal by hitting ctrl-alt-del which switched me out of Premiere onto the desktop. Clearly, there is some issue with video. I switched back into Premiere and was able then to set to no devices.
I'm not doing any capture at the moment, but I can only pray that it's some sort of bug related to not having a device connected? I plan on bringing footage from a RED in the next month. I upgraded to CS5 specifically so that I could use more than 4 gigs of RAM and for the new features.

    THank you for sending this.
I followed the benchmark directions, and I get an error at the final step
    when I run the script:
    line 99
    Error: path not found
I tried for an hour different things, namely to re run the whole test
procedure, deleting the output files, etc... he script is looking for
something in the preview files that it is not finding. I think the procedure
was written for a previous version, because the metadata settings are
different in my version of AME, and I don't know how much that affects it.
Also, AME increments the file names when it renders them so that I did not
get the right output file names at the first render. I had to turn off
incrementing and manually name each clip before rendering. The vb scricpt
looks for these names, so I understand it is important. I can't figure out,
however, what the script is looking for in the preview folder and not
    finding.
After spending almost two hours trying to troubleshoot the script, I gave
up. I can tell you tho that it takes about 6-7 minutes on my box to encode
    all the videos.
