[SOLVED] cool'n'quiet & modprobe newbie question

This is probably very newbie question, but I have no idea what to do.
I want to have cool'n'quiet working on my amd64. I turned it on in bios, and downloaded powernowd.
When I type:
> modprobe powernow-k8
> powernowd
it works. I added powernowd to demons in my /etc/rc.conf but after restarting computer it doesn't work - I have to type both commands above again.
How to make my system not forget loaded module after restart?

Use either /etc/modprobe.conf or the MODULES= array in /etc/rc.conf. I would have thought powersaved provided a config file from where you could pick a module to load though... sure there isn't one in /etc/ ?
Personally i would opt for powersaved, since i think it's more full featured (it's more a _power_ than a _cpu_ manager), but then again you may not care for anything other than controlling the cpu stepping/speed.

  • Cool n Quiet and core centre question

    just a quick question
if i dont have cool and quiet enabled in the bios and i start core centre it reports my Mhz as 2400 ( i have the XP 64 3700 chip )
but if i enable cool n quiet in the bios and then start core center it reporst the MHz as 1000
and i was just curious why ........ faintly paranoid that my chip isnt running to spec
thanks if you can help and no probs if you cant

so with cool and quiet enabled my chip is running at half its rated spec 1000mhz instead of 2400mhz
would this be why DOOM detected my pc and set all detail to low even though i have an x800 xp 64 3700 and a gig of ram .... DOOM basically underspecced my processor
thats a bit mad as father dougal would say
ok last question ... with cool and quiet off the processor is reporting at 45 degrees so i would imagine under load ( saY a game of doom 3 ) it would hit 50+ .... whats the max safe temp for these chips 65 degrees ???

  • Cool and Quiet question

Does cool and quiet reduce the fan speeds of all the fans plugged into the mobo or just the CPU fan?

CoreCenter's Cool'n'Quiet only adjusts CPU fan speed while AMD's Cool'n'Quiet  adjusts CPU speed. Here's a link to AMD's guide

  • Question vis Cool and Quiet

    OK.
    Software installed
Cool and quiet enabled in Bios before download and installation
Minimal Power Management selected in the Power options
With all that done, surely the System reading should show a slightly lower Clock Speed.
    Currently it's on 2.2 GHZ.
Have I missed soemthing in Bios??
Stop Press, Edit: Ignore my ramblings Richard
After a while the gizmo senses the lesser demand for power and adjusts accordingly
Sit back, and drink those beers

you might need a new bios update.  I did for my venice and my k8neo4 sli plat

  • Cool'n'Quiet not working like it should!

Well, I decided to try Cool'n'Quiet to see how much cooler and quieter my system would get. So I enabled it in BIOS and set Windows power management to Minimal, and watched the clock speed and voltage go down as the CPU load went down.
It stopped at about 1.3v and 1800 Mhz. It won't go any further! My friend practically has the same setup except he uses a 3000+ ClawHammer, and his clock speed and voltage decreases much more than mine. I've read that the clock speed should hit 1000 Mhz.
To answer some possible questions, yes, I have installed the latest AMD processor driver and yes, the CPU load is under 10% when I'm checking.
    Thanks in advance!

If you install the latest beta BIOS 1.2B12, you will see that CnQ can drop the multiplier down to 5.   But some people have seen instability with that BIOS.  I have not.

  • How to disable Cool N Quiet driver when it isnt in the bios or registry for Roxio game capture?

    1. HP G60-120 US Notebook PC
    2. Windows 7 32-bit
    3. No error messages
    4. No changes before issue occured.
I was told by Roxio (company of the capture card I bought to record gameplay on my Xbox) to call HP and get my Cool N Quiet driver disabled after I updated my other drivers and still had problems with my capture card. Can somebody tell me where to find it other than in the registry and bios because it is NOT in there and I have looked already more than 5 times or if you know where I can get it remotely disabled. HP cannot remotely disable it because I just talked to them and they don't have the power to do that.

No, Corecenter is almost useless and is NOT needed to "activate" Cool n Quiet.  The best it can do is tell you fan speed and temps, and even that is questionable.  It will also tell you clock speed but you can get that from right clicking "My Computer" choose Properties, go to General tab, note mhz displayed there.  If it is about half of full clock speed for your CPU, then CnQ is working right.  If it shows full clock speed, then CoolnQuiet is NOT working and you need to re-read Mr. Woo's original post which gives details about how to enable it.
Next, about fan speed.  You have to understand that CnQ does not have anything to do with fan speed directly. Unless you have fan speed control disabled in BIOS, then your fan is going to control as you described whether you have CnQ enabled or not. In BIOS, in the H/W Monitor section, there is a place to enable or disable fan speed control - it's called CPU Smart Temperature Monitor or something like that.
As long as it is enabled and your fan is compatible and hooked up right, the fan will ramp up and down to control temperature. This is independent of CnQ.  And it is independent of Corecenter.  Disable CnQ and shutdown CoreCenter, the mobo still controls fan speed.

  • Which is better : Enabling Cool'N Quiet or disabling it ?

    Hi !
I enabled the Cool'N Quiet , but the CPU-Z shows the CoreSpeed 1004.9 MHz , is that because enabling the Cool'N Quiet ? If yes , isn't it better that the CoreSpeed has high MHz ?
Any explanation plz ? because I am confused and newbie with all this thing beside I don't overclock anything .
    Thanks in Advance !

  • Basic stuff -- BIOS version, Cool 'n' Quiet working?

    Hi,
Okay, my new PC is up and running stable in WinXP Pro. Here are some very basic noob questions:
-How exactly do I determine my BIOS version? I thought I had v. 1.0 based on the loading screen during boot up, and SoftSandra, but MSI's Live Update says I have an equal or newer version than 1.2.
-How can I tell that Cool 'n Quiet is functioning properly? In Core Center, it appears that the CPU fan speed increases under load, but it doesn't happen right away so I'm not sure. Also, the CPU fan speed slider stays in the position I put it in manually, even after I switch back to Cool 'n Quiet (maybe this is just a GUI thing).
BTW -- I installed the Hyperion 4-in-1 drivers, enabled Cool 'n Quiet in the BIOS and set Windows power management to "minimal" -- is there anything else I need to do to enable Cool 'n Quiet functionality?
Also, should I just control the CPU fan manually through a drive bay fan controller instead of through Cool 'n Quiet?
    Thanks,
    -Ross

    Hi
Glad to see we are down to minor bits and bobs.
The bios version should be at top of first post screen. use pause if its passes to quick.
BUT, live update checks what version you have, if there is a newer version it will tell you. there is a 1.33 available from MSI, but not on live update yet.
There are various threads on C & Q, I don't use it, but some who do like it, others confused by it, you have obviously read the threads. So you know more than me !!
Hyperion 4 in 1 is the best driver, if C & Q is working for you I would leave it be, the fan will speed up or slow down on temp. That will take a few secs time lag as chip heats up, or cools down. As long as CPU temp stays within norms, I would think is is working normally.
    Enjoy it
    Jocko

  • Is it OK to use Cool'n'Quiet in games?

Is it OK to use the automatic processor voltage/clock control while playing games?
Will I have pauses or hiccups when the clock changes?
Another question: is there any way to PREVENT the automatic clock control from going all the way to the max multiplier? That's because I'm running 230x10, and I do not want to reach 230x11.
    Thanks.

    Syar2003,
Great job!! This tools really looks like a superior replacement for AMD's cnq driver (even though it's not a device driver...how odd).
It seems to work like this: you set min and max multipliers (min is usually 5 for a newcastle, but you can change it to 4 like the claws to save a bit more power while just web browsing.  Like syar2003 said, max is respected: if you set 10x max on a newcastle 3200+, it won't jack it up to 11x against your wishes, the way "standard" cool and quiet does.) So in other words, it seems to work as advertised.  Another interesting thing is that it seems to use every multiplier (except half multipliers) between the min and max that you specify. For example if you specify a min of 4 and a max of 11, you'll also see 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, unlike standard cool and quiet (which gives me just 5, 9, 10, and 11). Not necessary perhaps, but a nice feature anyway.
The tool does not give you full control over voltages. When you pick the min and max multipliers, you also pick min and max voltages, but the voltages for the in-between multipliers are chosen algorithmically by the tool, like it or not. Fortunately, it seems to do a reasonable job at picking voltages for those intermediate steps.  Here are some examples from a quick first run:
Setting multiplier range from 4 to 11, voltage from 1.1 to 1.5:
    4x: 1.1V
    5x: 1.15V
    6x: 1.225V
    7x: 1.275V
    8x: 1.325V
    9x: 1.375V
    10x: 1.450V
    11x: 1.5V
So it seems to have chosen more or less reasonable voltages for 5 thru 10...still it might be nice if you could override.
Setting multiplier range from 5 to 10, voltage from 1.1 to 1.5, we see some (expected) differences among the intermediate multipliers:
    5x: 1.1V
    6x: 1.175V
    7x: 1.25V
    8x: 1.35V
    9x: 1.425V
    10x: 1.5V
This could be a setting to try with, for example, an HTT of 220, because if you add 10% to all of the speeds, you end up with speed & voltage combinations not too far apart from the previous case, which we know is safe. Will try that later...
To try (haven't gotten to it yet):
-- In MSI BIOS 1.55+, you specify cpu voltage with a number (like 1.5V) and with a fudge factor percent (0%, 3.3%, 5%, 8.3%, 10%). Clearly when using RM1.2, the first number is ignored and replaced with your RM1.2 settings, as it should be. (Haven't tried it, but it would make sense.) But we would like the fudge factor percent to be respected by the RM1.2 tool. Is it, or does the fudge percentage get silently ignored when using RM1.2? Haven't tried yet. If it doesn't work, then there won't be a way to apply good voltages.

  • Again: Cool`n Quiet and K8m Neo-V

Working on a new computer for my wife. She wants her new computer to be quiet and powerful (no gaming), so i bought MSI K8M Neo-V and athlon 64 2800+. I have two problems now:
1 I had the same problem as described in an earlier post, it would not post after enabeling cool`n quiet. A bios upgrade fixed that. But: The fan speed does not go down ! Win Xp tells me the cpu is running at 990mhz, but the fan is still going at over 3000rpm. This must be wrong?
2 I bought 256 Mb ram (TwinMos PC3200). But the motherboard tells me its only 196 Mb   Win Xp says its 192 Mb of ram... Is this a motherboard problem or faulty ram? Didn`t help putting the ram in the DIMM2-socket. Any suggestions?
    Thanks, great forum

Thanks bosskiller, great link to the cool`n quiet FAQ. I understand now, that its up to the mobo-producer to give us a way to adjust fan speed. As far as I have found out, MSI have not given us this important possibility yet. The newest bios (ver. 3.2) does not adjust fan speed automatically, and there is no way to do it manually.
The newest version of CoreCenter from MSI does not support this mobo yet (I think)(it does not controll the fan, but it gives you the rpm). New versions of the bios and/or CoreCenter can fix this, I hope. Otherwise we must buy technical regulators like Zalman Fan Mate 1.
About Ram: I think bosskiller is right about the shared memory, the VGA part occupies 64 mb ram. CPU-Z reports the ram-module as 256 mb. The os only gets 192 mb.
I bought only 256 mb ram, TwinMos PC 3200, single banks I think. I was planning on using my old windows millennium, and save some money on both os and ram.
The ram is running 400 mhz, no problem there.
I use Zalman ST-300BLP power supply. 300w, 15A for the 12V. I dont think the power supply gives me any problems. I have used it with my P4-system before, no problems there either.
(I use thermaltake fanless power supply with the P4 now, and its great  )
The athlon64 system looks very quick, if MSI solves the fan speed issue, this system is going to be great!

Yes the CnQ is enabled in BIOS, and YES, ACPI is also enabled (also tryed disabling it).

  • [Athlon64] cool'n'quiet

    Hi there.
    I have cool'n'quiet question/problem.
I've enabled cool'n'quiet in bios, installed latest amd cpu driver for winxp 1.2.2.0, latest corecenter 2.0.0.4 and set power management to minimal.
CPU speed droped to 1000Mhz in a second. But, shouldn't it drop to 800Mhz? Second thing is cpu rpm, corecenter states around 3200 rpm @ 1000Mhz. Shouldn't it be lower?
    Thanks, Laki.

The fan speed should drop by itself usually but it can take some time to do so. I know some folks with Windows XP have stated in the past that it did not happen for them. There are options in Core Center or at least were there. I don't use Core Center though as it is junk. I use Speedfan and it works fine for that. However you have to set up Speedfan and that can be tricky. Do a forum search in this area for Speedfan to get links and some helpful info on how to set it up so that it works. You can also search for Core Center if you like to use that util and get some info on setting it up as well.
For whatever it is worth Speedfan does have more setup ability than does Core Center and thus more control. That is why so many of us preffer it.

Yes, I noticed this behaviour also.  Moreover I would like to see a feature that enables you to create some kind of power profile.  A profile that says e.g: "don't minimize power until load 5 minutes less than 10". It's now all or nothing.....

  • CPU Fan Speed- (Cool 'n' Quiet)

Recently I did a reformat of my computer and now I’m having a weird issue.
I’ve always had Cool ‘n’ Quiet enabled and my system would spin down the fan accordingly (not the CPU speed) but now my fan is at around 3200rpm until I turn on Core Center, it drops to about 1000rpm (as it was the case before my reformat)
My question is there any way to enable Cool ‘n’ Quiet without turning on Core Center, or any 3-rd party application for that matter.  (as was the case for me previously)
Also if I turn off power management in windows my CPU gets throttled, I do not want this, I only want the fan to throttle accordingly
    Neo4 Plat. 1.x (BIOS 1.D)
    TIA!

Ohh... is that what it is... I saw that setting but i just ignored it.  I musta had it on previously.  So setting it to say 50C should do the trick?

  • Is Cool 'n Quiet stable?

    I run a K8N Neo2 Platinum (MS-7025) with 1.4 bios, 3800+ NewCastle CPU and Kingston HyperX 400MHz memory.
The setup works like a charm, but when I enable "Cool 'n Quiet" it seems to cause lock-ups and reboots.
The system is NOT overclocked, everything is set to AUTO in BIOS, except for memory which has been set to a bit slower settings than SPD reports.
When I have Core Center open on screen to watch what Cool 'n Quiet does, it seems like most of the time it reports 200MHz x 5.0 at idle, but when I start up an application, it can peak to 380MHz x 12 ?
Neither memory nor CPU should be able to handle that kind of FSB clock, so is it a system bug that the clock peaks at way above 200MHz?  I really don't DARE to use "Cool 'n Quiet" for that reason, I need a stable system that doesn't hang or reboot in the middle of working.
    Later,
    Anders.

    Andres,
I'm not getting the BSODs but the fluctuations do have me concerned. This thread is interesting. Blue screen caused by Vcore flucuations?
Raising the Vcore from 1.50 to 1.525 or 1.55 does seem to help stabilize my system but the CPU temp goes up. I've got a Thermalright XP-90 on the way so heat shouldn't be a problem.
    ===============================================
    What I've found so far...
Cool & Quiet disabled in the BIOS.
    Start CoreCenter running.
    Start Speedfan running.
    Start WCPUCLK
Put a full load on the CPU. (seti@home)
Just moving the mouse around causes a few alarming fluctuations seen in CoreCenter.
WCPUCLK doesn't register the fluctuations but I'm not getting BSODs.
    1) Open CC. Click on CoreCenter , the program title button.
    2) Click User
    3) Set the fans on high
    4) Click Apply.
Now the Vcore and FSB stabilize.
It appears that C & Q is turned off.
    ===============================================
It looks like what the other guys have been saying...Don't use CoreCenter except as a reference to help set up other programs like MBM and SpeedFan. Hmmm...RightMarks RM clock also sounds interesting.
Having a quieter system with Cool & Quiet turned on in the BIOS is nice. I'll have to do more testing to see if its stable. If C & Q is still causing instability after raising the CPU VID to 1.525 in the BIOS...I'll leave it off...Cie La Vie.
