[Solved] Crackling sound in Wine

Hi community,
I'm having some trouble with Wine's sound output. In all Wine applications (including winecfg) I get crackling sound and many of these lines:
ALSA lib pcm.c:7832:(snd_pcm_recover) underrun occurred
All non-Wine applications work fine. I know that the problem appeared some time ago, but since I didn't use Wine for a pretty long time, I cannot tell exactly when it appeared. Currently the latest version from multilib/ is installed (1.6rc3-1). Here is the list of opt deps (installed ones are marked as such):

I need to say that I'm using the fix for crackling noise in Skype: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sk … -bit_OS.29 (adding "tsched=0" to some line in /etc/pulse/default.pa). Trying to revert the fix left me without sound at all for some reason.
The .asoundrc (nothing changed as far as I remember):
$ cat ~/.asoundrc
pcm.dmixout {
# Just pass this on to the system dmix
type plug
slave {
pcm "dmix"
defaults.pcm.rate_converter "samplerate_best"
Thanks for any hint,

Thanks for your reply! I don't think, I use dmix, the .asoundrc is some default one (might actually be a pretty old one since I tend to carry my /home partition over to new system installs). I tried to remove it with no luck. pulseaudio-alsa has been already installed with following /etc/asound.conf:
# Use PulseAudio by default
pcm.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
hint {
show on
description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
ctl.!default {
type pulse
fallback "sysdefault"
# vim:set ft=alsaconf:
Since nothing changed after removing .asoundrc, maybe this asound.conf has been used all the time rather than the .asoundrc?
Concerning the tsched=0 thing, the driver is snd_hda_intel (with snd_hda_codec_realtek), the card is an ALC887-VD. The Alsa page you mentioned states that indeed some cards with snd_intel_hda (seems to be the same as snd_hda_intel) driver have problems with timer-based scheduling, but doesn't specify which ones exactly.
So now I'm following your last hint and building wine-multimedia. It had lib32-libcl as make dependency which made conflicts with lib32-catalyst-utils, so I now try building wine-multimedia with lib32-libcl removed from the makedepends list, let's see whether it builds, it takes a while.  Will report back as soon as I have any news.

  • [SOLVED] No sound in wine (ALSA / dmix)

    Hi!
Getting no sound in (most likely) everything run trough wine.
When run, winecfg says (this might be unrelated though?):
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:957:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) The dmix plugin supports only playback stream
err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"wineesd.drv": libesd.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    err:alsa:wine_snd_pcm_recover underrun occurred
The winecfg Test-Button plays sound though. No matter what sound device is selected (even all deactivated) - every time I press the Button, I get to hear the Test-Sound + another one of these lenes in terminal...:
    err:alsa:wine_snd_pcm_recover underrun occurred
Running bin32_wine on arch 64, using ALSA, should be configured correctly (dmix sound works everywhere at once, even flash & multiple users). Anyone an idea where to start looking?
    Thanks!

Thanks, but I'm not using ESD, I guess this was really unrelated.
Turned out what's also unrelated are the "test sound" button working in winecfg audio tab and if the configuration there is actually really supposed to be working: after deactivating everything except for ALSA and turning off hardware acceleration too, I suddenly had sound from programs running under wine, too.

  • XFi crackling sound solve

    Hi Guys,
I had the same crackling sounds with my card. I bought the Cinema edition and there comes a xtreme music with this package. When i installed the drivers, my system was dam slow. the sound was crap and i could forget to play a game. Then i switched to win XP 64 and downloaded the driver for this system, gess what? The crackling stopt, games run fast and the sound is just beautiful. So switched back to win XP 32 bit. with a my new clean system i downloaded the update. and then i installed ONLY the update and my xfi runs as good under win xp (32) as it has under 64 bit. Then you can install the additional software that comes with your cd. All is running fine. But NEVER install the driver that comes with the cd. I installed the old driver and my system again (after the update). My system was slow and i had the crap sound again.
The only thing you lose is the IR Remote Control, somehow that thing doesn't work. Because of that i installed the old driver again (as i mentioned above), the remote works then, but well you know slow system and crackling sound.
So if anybody knows what the file is, i must install for the remote to work, plz tell me.
PS: when this solution was already posted in the 04+ page thread regarding this issue, i apologise. But could anyone tell me a solution with the remote issue anyway

Here's a bit of info that crackle-sufferers might find useful. There's a bit of a story behind it, but stay with me, I think it will be worth your while.
I just tried installing an X-Fi Platinum, and had to give up. The card was simply not detected. No matter what, system would not detect, drivers would not install. I tried everything. After too many hours of effort and a long call to tech support, I gave up and tried to revert to my previous Audigy 2 card.
    Guess what? MASSIVE crackling!
I freaked. This system had been working perfectly for months. I tried all the solutions that have been posted... moving the card, pulling all other cards, etc. Finally, I scrubbed the system... ran the driver remover, deleted every line in the registry with "X-Fi," "Audigy" or "Creative" in it, deleted the Creative folder in Program Files, etc., etc. Of course, then the Audigy card wouldn't recognize! Much more swearing, fritzing... but bottom line, it finally installed.
    Guess what? NO MORE CRACKLE!
I knew the X-Fi software had not uninstalled fully, which was my first clue. Now, back on pure Audigy drivers (the latest version), all is well. What does that say to you? To me, it puts the blame for the crackling squarely on the X-Fi drivers. Oh, sure, there are probably other contributing factors (since not every system exhibits the problem), but if having even a remnant of those cursed X-Fi drivers installed is enough to produce hideous crackling on a previously faultless Audigy 2, what other conclusion can you draw?
The logic seems ironclad to me. The good news: Creative COULD fix the problem, if it's just in the drivers. That stuff about the cards not recognizing... now THAT'S just evil. This is 2006 (isn't it's). That kind of annoyance went out with Win95.

Recently pulseaudio was updated version 5.0 this finally fixed my KDE issues where KDE would switch inputs after every login. But now I have a crackling sound issue in Skype but only on my end off the connection. The one I'm talking to sounds fine but he hears me all the distorted and crackling. I tried the Skype Test Call system and there I sound fine no crackling issues or distortions. Anyone else have issues like that currently or know that could be?

  • K7T Turbo R Limited Edition and crackleing sound

I started getting a crackling sound recently. I never had that problem before. The only thing I can think of that I have done that may have started it was to update the bios and the via chipset drivers. I tried to reinstall the 442 drivers (only the pci part) but no change. I reinstalled the 443.
I read in other threads that it could be either a latency problem. Also moving the sblive sound card could do fix the sound. I don’t seem to have any latency timing adjustments in the bios and I tried moving the sound card to number 3 and the number 6 slot with no luck. I have tried a couple of 686 bug fixes and they didn’t work. But I have also read where that wouldn’t work so I removed them.
Is there anything that might work?

  • Solved Crackling Problem in Windows 7 (SB 24-bit USB External, HP Pavilion dv6 1124-ca laptop).

I'm one of many users who has had problems with the sound crackling problem with their sound card after upgrading to Windows 7.
I was previously on Windows Vista running 5. with 24-bit, 96000Hz sample rate Studio Quality with no problems at all. When I upgraded to Windows 7 RC, Windows was able to automatically find a driver for my external USB sound card, but when playing music, I always got a constant crackling sound coming from the speakers while trying to put the card in anything above 2. or and when putting it in 24-bit 96000Hz, the crackling only got worse. Installing the Beta drivers on the Creative site didn't work either... still had the crackling. I searched around for the past several months for solutions to no avail.
Then today, I was surfing the HP website (I have a HP Pavilion dv6 24-ca laptop) to see if they had added Windows 7 drivers to their support site and they did... and so I started downloading all available Windows 7 drivers for my specific laptop. When I first installed Windows 7 RC, it had installed it's own drivers for everything (on-board sound etc.). After replacing the Windows 7 installed "High Definition Audio Device" drivers with the HP supplied "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC" drivers... I'm not sure if the on board sound driver has anything at all to do with the crackling on the Soundblaster but I replaced the drivers anyway. I also installed another driver called "AMD USB Filter" that was supplied by the HP website for Windows 7 which is another driver that I thought might help with the problem. Other drivers installed were "ENE CIR Reciever Driver" and "Realtek Card Reader Driver" but those have nothing to do with the sound card.
After installing the drivers from the HP website, I no longer get the crackling from the speakers when playing in 5.. I am also now able to select 24-bit 96000Hz sample rate without crackling as well I am very happy to have finally solved the problem. So to anyone having similar problems, I suggest you check out your manufacturers website to see if they have any drivers available for you... I have a feeling the AMD USB Filter is what solved the problem... but who knows.
Hope this helps other HP users!

If you can hear the music through the speakers but not the headphones I would suggest using an AUX cable because seems the sound isn't being transmitted over.

  • Cant hear sounds from wine ingame?

I can't hear sounds within wine games but if i open winecfg and click test sounds, i hear a faint sound, so im not sure if my audio is low for wine or what. i don't know how to set the volume for wine if that's what it is because when i open the alsa mixer it has nothing but the speakers actual sounds and not the programs. please help?!
also, i am new so i don't know much yet.

I really wouldn't be bumping this dead topic, if I wouldn't be experiencing exactly the same (or at least very similar) problems.
There is one major difference though, I didn't notice this problem until I installed Command & Conquer 3, as it's the only game that lacks sound. In the other two games I have, that is Age of Empires 2 and Medieval 2: Total War, sound works.
So I didn't notice it before.
I was trying to solve this by myself, but I just didn't find anything that could be the problem.
So here it's how it is.
If I set sound in winecfg to HD-Audio Generic  ALC889 Digital that is exactly the soundcard I have I have no sound whatsoever in Command & Conquer, but sound works completely okay in other two games.
If I set to default or system default, then there's sound in all but with high latency, a lot of noise and a bit of echo. In AoE this goes away once you get to the actual game the latency, noise and echo disappear, but in C&C it only kind of disappears and can still be heard. It's not just faint or whatever, it's actually quite audible and does make the game unplayable (especially the echo).
So if anyone has any idea what to do, please tell me. I think I once had this problem and managed to solve it, but I can't remember how I did it.

  • Satellite P100-192: crackling sound coming from speaker when using MSN

Hello, i have just bought this p100-192 laptop. The speakers seem to muffle ( especially whenever there is an incoming message in MSN )
Does anyone know why and a solution to it ????

    Hi,
I own a Satellite P100-188 and the sound crackled in windows with driver 3.11.0.0 and BIOS 2.10, after sending the notebook back to Toshiba only for them to install driver version 3.11.0.51 I found that some sounds where not playing at all. I have come to the conclusion that the Conexant sound chip (or hardware) is just rubbish, for instance take the sound volume of the beep tone when hitting caps lock or num lock compared to the general volume, which, at full volume is barely audible!
I myself went back to using version 3.11.0.0 as I would rather have crackling sound than missing sounds. I'm considering purchasing a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA sound card as I play games a lot on my notebook. If sound is important for you, you may want to consider it too.
An eaiser way to check your BIOS version is to click Start select Run... and enter this line in the dialog box
    TInTouch.exe and hit enter.
Then switch to the Protect and Fix tab and left click PC diagnostic tool, it will list all the information on your notebook.
This is how I updated my BIOS, I downloaded the win update file and unzipped it, I then ran the Phoenix Winphlash program and entered a bios backup destination and browsed to the .wph file which was in the folder that the program unzipped to, I then followed the onscreen prompts and that was it, the machine re-booted with the new bios installed.

  • [SOLVED] No sound cards detected - /proc/asound missing

Yet another case of 'i've spent too long banging my head on the keyboard so i'm going to run to you for help'. Essentially i've been using OSS since i've installed Arch, worked fine - although there was absolutely no sound in Wine programs no matter what driver i selected so i decided to try using ALSA. This is the start of my problem. Removed all the OSS packages i could find, ! commented the daemon in rc.conf then proceeded to install ALSA... or, some ALSA utilities since it seems to be included in the kernel? Anyway, alsaconf can't find any sound cards. Upon further investigation it seems as though there isn't any /proc/asounds directory at all. Although lspci clearly shows:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01)
So i'm pretty stumped, no idea where to go from here. I've got ALSA working fine on this machine before, in Arch too... thanks for any help

Yup, i had done that. However, my search led to this thread:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=119263
Which seemed to be a similar problem but their solution did not help (pacman -S kernel26). But i'm pretty sure by this point it's a problem with my modules (ultimately my own stupidity, but we'll get to that later ). This led me here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=18828
Which again didn't present any solutions that worked, however, upon checking my rc.conf again i noticed a blacklisted module by the name of 'soundcore'. I don't ever remember doing that, or could think of any reason why it would exist so i unblacklisted it, rebooted and now it all works - finding sound cards, alsamixer, playing sound. The lot.
All that's left to do now is see if switching from OSS to ALSA actually solved the problem in Wine i wanted it to Thanks a lot for all the help guys!
    Also - changed thread title.
EDIT: It did fix the problem, OSS is great but it simply does not play ball in the slightest when it comes to Wine.

  • Exs24 crackling sound at the start of each sample

    Hi
I just installed project sams true strike 1 and 2 on the exs 24 sampler on Logic Pro 8.0.2.
My problem is that every time i play a note on the keyboard there is always a popping/crackling sound at the start (attack) of the note. When i go and listen to the sample in the sample editor there is no such pop/click sound.
Is there a way to solve this problem?
I would be thankful for any advice or assumptions!

    Hi Jupiter,
unfortunately we saw this message only today.
The crackles you are getting happen because the original library was developed by Project SAM using a set of samples, and then at the last minute they swapped the sample files with a different set of files without updating the instruments for the changed files.
There are several commercial libraries that unfortunately have this problem, and Project SAM is a known one.
Normally you do not see this problem in Logic, as Logic can see and fix the problem itself silently without teling you anything. When you relink your library with ExsManager, however, Logic thinks the instrument is already ok and will not fix the problem itself.
ExsManager by default will not fix this problem either, because we want the user to be in charge of what is done to his library (i.e. we do not want "magic" to be performed).
It's not a big problem anyway, and you can use ExsManager to fix this:
    -start ExsManager
    -switch to the advanced mode
-click the "Reset settings" button to start from safe settings
-set SampleDir and InstDir as you you need for your library (should already be set as last time you used it)
-switch to the "Options>References page and enable the "Check and fix sample format inconsistencies in instruments" and "Force refresh for all references"
    -click "Analyze"
    -click "Process"
    ... and that's it.
You do not have to do this every time: once the instruments are fixed you can relink as usual.

I have a Pavillion DV6 6121tx, with a 5400 RPM 640GB hard drive. I bought this laptop 3 months ago, and recently sometimes i notice a low crackling sound coming. I guess it would be coming from the hard drive only.

Indeed, a hard disk noise is not normal and just mean the end of his life. But I know this sound well because my other computers also crack and for some of it, it's unbearable. Yet they make it since long, this has never been otherwise, and their hard disk always go good.
My problem is that the noise appeared suddenly, for an unknown reason, and according to all the software I've tested, he's always fine.
In your opinion, when I will format my hard disk to install Windows 7, it could have an effect?
Otherwise, as a last resort, I would see the service after sale of my store and then we'll see ...
